Mystical Vision and Divine Union in Sacred Song

Professor Paramjeet Singh

This kirtan presents a soul's visionary encounter with the Divine Beloved, moving through stages of recognition, intoxication in love's sweetness, and ultimate dissolution of self into the Divine. The song uses the classical Sikh and devotional poetry framework where the soul—sometimes depicted as the chatrik bird—awakens through hearing divine sound (Shabad) and experiences the longing (bairaag) that comes from tasting infinite love.

What Does It Mean to See the Divine in Vision?

The kirtan opens with the refrain "Aaj More Aaye Hai"—"He has come to me today"—establishing the poem's central event: a visionary encounter with the Beloved. This is not metaphorical absence of the Divine, but rather a sudden recognition or unveiling of presence already there. The song describes this moment as a vision (supan), a realm where ordinary perception dissolves and inner sight awakens.

The imagery is vivid: the Divine form appears "adorned in a wondrous way," suggesting that what appears is not an ordinary human form but a luminous, radiant presence. The poet's language emphasizes that this vision grants immediate knowledge—what was hidden becomes visible to the inner eye. This reflects a key teaching in devotional spirituality: that the Divine is always present, but obscured by the veils of habitual perception, and that sudden glimpses of this reality can occur through grace.

How Does the Soul Recognize Its Beloved?

Once the vision appears, the poet recognizes the figure immediately as his "extremely sacred, beloved and pure friend." The use of "friend" is significant—not ruler, not judge, but intimate companion. The Beloved is described as "Parma Dayaal" (the most merciful), and called "Laal" (a precious thing, the jewel). These titles blend reverence with intimacy; the Divine is simultaneously vast and compassionate, yet personal and infinitely precious to the individual soul.

Physical attributes are named with devotional precision: "He has beautiful eyes" and "words from His mouth are sweet as nectar." This is not crude physicality but rather the tradition's way of speaking about how divine attributes manifest. The eyes suggest witness and presence; the mouth's sweet words evoke how divine truth, when heard by the prepared ear, tastes like "Madh Madhur"—sweet and delicious honey. The soul drinks in these words, becoming intoxicated not on ordinary substances but on the taste of divine reality.

What Is the Bliss of Divine Embrace?

The poem narrates a profound moment of physical and spiritual merger: "He was seated on a beautiful bed and He hugged me to Him. I was filled with indescribable bliss." This language moves beyond intellectual understanding into the realm of embodied spiritual experience. The embrace symbolizes non-dual union—the dissolution of the boundary between the lover and the beloved, the seeker and the sought.

The poet says this bliss is "indescribable," highlighting what mystical traditions across cultures have noted: that direct experience of divine presence transcends language and conceptual thought. Words can only point toward such experiences; they cannot contain them. The soul, having tasted this union, becomes transformed.

How Does Hearing Divine Sound Awaken the Soul?

A crucial turn occurs when the poet references the Shabad—the divine word or sound. "I the chatrik bird, after hearing the Divine Shabad, understood everything. (my inner eye opened)." The chatrik (also spelled chakrik) is a bird from Indian mythology and sacred poetry that is said to drink only rainwater falling from the sky, symbolizing the soul that seeks nourishment only from the Divine.

By identifying as the chatrik and emphasizing that understanding comes through hearing the Shabad, the poet references a foundational principle in Sikh and Vedantic thought: Shabad Guru (the Divine Word as teacher). Spiritual awakening is not merely intellectual but involves the activation of subtle hearing—an inner ear that perceives vibrations of truth that ordinary language cannot carry. When the Shabad is heard, "the inner eye opened," suggesting that sound awakens sight, or that hearing divine truth simultaneously illuminates inner vision.

What Is Bairaag and Why Does It Follow Union?

After the experience of union, the poet declares: "Now I am like a fish in water. Great Bairaag (longing of separation) has sprouted inside me." This statement may seem paradoxical—if union has occurred, why separation and longing?

In devotional philosophy, bairaag (often translated as dispassion or detachment) specifically means the longing and yearning that arises from having tasted divine love and then recognizing that full, permanent union remains ahead. It is not the bairaag of world-weariness but of love-sickness. The soul, having drunk even one drop of the infinite, now cannot settle for anything less. The image of the fish in water (as opposed to the bird awaiting rain) suggests the soul now swims in an ocean of divine presence, yet still experiences the ache of longing for complete merger.

This is a sophisticated teaching: the spiritual path is not linear ascent from separation to union, but rather a deepening spiral where moments of grace and recognition awaken the soul to its capacity for even greater intimacy with the Divine. The longing itself becomes a form of love and connection.

How Does This Kirtan Function as a Spiritual Practice?

Performed as a kirtan—a call-and-response devotional chant—this song is not merely a recitation of spiritual ideas but an invitation for listeners to enter the same journey. The repetition of "Aaj More Aaye Hai" throughout creates a rhythmic, meditative container. The melody and call-response structure engage the nervous system, gradually shifting consciousness from ordinary mind to a more receptive, devotional state.

The kirtan tradition teaches that repetition of sacred words and themes attunes the mind to those frequencies. By singing or listening to descriptions of divine encounter, the practitioner's own heart-field is activated. The words become seeds; hearing them plants those seeds of recognition, longing, and surrender within the listener.

Where to Go From Here

To deepen engagement with this kirtan's themes, consider exploring the broader tradition of Sikh devotional poetry (particularly the works referenced in the Guru Granth Sahib), which uses similar imagery of vision, divine friendship, and the Shabad as the primary path. Reading translations of other kirtans by Professor Paramjeet Singh or similar teachers can illuminate how these themes recur and develop. For practice, listening to or singing along with this kirtan repeatedly—not as entertainment but as meditation—allows the teachings to work at subtle levels of consciousness. Finally, investigating the lived experience of longing (bairaag) in your own spiritual life can connect the song's abstract wisdom to your embodied practice.

Bairaag refers to the intense longing and spiritual ache that arises after tasting divine love. Unlike the detachment born from world-weariness, it is a love-sickness—the soul, having glimpsed infinite union, cannot settle for separation and experiences a burning desire for deeper communion with the Divine.
The chatrik symbolizes the soul that seeks nourishment only from the Divine, traditionally represented as a bird that drinks only rainwater from the sky. In this kirtan, identifying as the chatrik signals the soul's single-pointed devotion and its awakening through the divine Shabad.
According to the kirtan and Sikh philosophy, the Shabad (divine word or sound vibration) is the primary teacher. Hearing the Shabad activates an inner perception—it 'opens the inner eye'—allowing the soul to understand directly, not through intellectual knowledge but through subtle resonance with truth.
The vision represents a sudden, graceful unveiling of divine presence that is always there but ordinarily obscured. This recognition is intensely personal and intimate—the Divine appears not as a distant ruler but as the soul's most precious friend, addressing the longing for intimate spiritual communion.
The kirtan describes bliss as the indescribable sweetness of divine embrace, tasted as 'Madh Madhur' (honey-like sweetness). This bliss arises from direct experience of union with the Beloved, moving beyond intellectual understanding into embodied spiritual realization.
The call-and-response structure, along with melodic repetition, creates a meditative container that gradually shifts consciousness from ordinary thinking into receptive devotional states. The rhythm and words work together to attune the nervous system and activate the heart's capacity for divine connection.
