Picture a box of powdered gelatin on a kitchen counter. Pour boiling water over it, and the powder dissolves into a liquid. Set it in the refrigerator, and that liquid firms into a trembling solid. That ordinary kitchen change is where professor emerita Carol Davis, a physical therapist, begins her account of what fascia is, how it behaves, and why she believes a practitioner's hands and attention can reach deeper than technique alone. In part two of an interview on Christine Wushke's channel, Davis covers biotensegrity, the idea that the body holds its shape through a balance of continuous tension and discrete compression; the claim that fascia is a living, phase-shifting ground substance; the 2018 description of an "interstitium" tissue; and the case that intuition and presence are part of manual therapy. Some of what she says is established biomechanics, some is speculative, and some is framed by her own experience. Read it as a teacher's testimony, not a settled consensus.

Why does a gelatin dessert show up in a discussion about the body?

Davis reaches for Jell-O because it makes a phase change visible. Water becomes steam, steam becomes ice, and a dessert powder becomes a liquid and then a gel, depending on heat and temperature. In her telling, the body's fascia is a version of this same material: a ground substance that is mostly water, threaded with collagen and elastin, that shifts between fluid and firm states. She draws a distinction between the gelatin in the box and the tissue inside us. The dessert, she says, is a "type one" polysaccharide ground substance, while the body's is "type two." Hyaluronic acid in the joints, she explains, is "almost all water," with a little collagen and a little elastin. In muscle, the fascia is more spidery; in tendons, it is dense and tight, though still able to lengthen.

The image is useful because it reframes fascia from a passive wrapping into a material with states. Davis credits the English osteopath John Barnes, whose teaching she follows in myofascial release, with describing the gel under the hand as something like melting butter or stretching taffy. She traces his interest through decades of work, and says that when she first heard his ideas in a 1989 myofascial release course she recognized a teacher who understood what she had been feeling. Whatever one makes of the physics, the practical instruction is clear: the tissue is not a static sheet. It responds over time to load, warmth, pressure and the attention of the person touching it.

What is biotensegrity, and where does Buckminster Fuller fit in?

Tensegrity, a term associated with Buckminster Fuller, describes structures that hold their form through continuous tension and isolated compression. Davis says Fuller did not discover the principle, but that he built it into a geodesic dome. Her point is that the body works the same way. The bones act as struts under compression, while the elastic web of fascia carries tension. Gravity is constant, and so is movement, which means the whole arrangement is always rebalancing. Davis describes this as tissue that "is constantly changing form," allowing elasticity without collapse. "We can't turn ourselves into a knot," she says, comparing the body to a shape-shifter rather than a rubber toy. Mimes, she notes, hold wonderful patterns without words.

She extends the idea to partner dance. Watching a tango, she describes two bodies that follow each other through skin, proprioception and continuous tension. She calls this "biotensegrity," the sense that the whole system communicates through its connective web, not only through the nervous system. This is the most speculative leap in the interview. The mechanical principle of tensegrity is a real engineering concept, and its use as a model for soft tissue has a serious research literature. But the claim that fascia is a kind of communication network, faster than nerves, rests in part on sources she cites rather than on clinical data she presents in the conversation.

What did the baseball example and the Edison story add to her argument?

The interview opens mid-argument, with Davis citing James Ashman's book Energy Medicine and its claim that only a fast, fascia-based signal could explain how a batter reacts to a ball thrown at 96 miles per hour. She describes an acupuncture point experiment in which stimulation through the fascia registered far faster than stimulation through nerve, at a difference she gives as about .002 seconds. She uses it to argue that the body is "all embedded in this stuff." Her broader analogy is to moments of insight: Edison, she says, would doze with a steel ball in his hand so that when it fell and woke him, he could shift consciousness and find an answer. Davis treats these as stories about how a changed state of awareness opens new knowledge. As evidence for fascia's speed, the examples are anecdotal and should be read that way.

Can touch reach the nucleus of a cell?

Davis's most striking claim concerns mechanotransduction. She describes a Boston researcher's work showing that pressing on tissue can move energy through the skin and fascia, down microtubules, to the cell membrane and into the cytoplasm, and then the nucleus. "The DNA is transformed by the energy of your touch," she says, a sentence that will read as bold to most clinicians. Mechanotransduction, the conversion of mechanical force into cellular signals, is an active and legitimate field. The leap from that to DNA being rewritten by a therapist's hands is her interpretation, and the interview does not supply the controlled data that would establish it.

"We're doing the science all wrong," Davis recounts a colleague saying, describing how tissue was studied after it had been dehydrated, sliced and fixed (interview, approx. 7:30).

This critique is more concrete and more defensible. Davis argues that conventional anatomy and cell biology often work on tissue that has been drained of fluid, spun in centrifuges and sliced for slides. That method, she suggests, hides the living, watery architecture of the body. She then ties it to the recent description of a new tissue she calls the interstitium: a fluid-filled, fascia-like layer surrounding organs and lymphatic channels, which she says was published in Scientific Reports after researchers at NYU found it. She presents this as proof that the field had been looking at the wrong thing, and that the water in tissue matters. Readers should check the original paper for the specifics of what was measured and how; the interview gives the gist, not the methods.

What does intuition have to do with a clinical hand?

This is where the interview moves from anatomy to practice. Davis argues that a therapist must be "in the state of yoga," which she glosses as being united with what is rather than struggling against it. Her practical instruction is to get out of the analytical mind. She describes a state she calls "channel 3," in which the practitioner stops trying to figure the body out and asks, "What do I feel here? What is the energy? Where is this?" She says the body is largely unknown to us, comparing the visible to a small fraction of what exists, and that an open, curious touch can detect what instrument-based assessment misses. "We're curious cats," she says of practitioners in contact with a client (about 13:40).

She is precise about the mechanics of this presence. Press in, but do not let the client push back, because resistance blocks the release. She describes the tissue as a sensitive, responsive field that will not change if the therapist is too rigid or too forceful. The cranial rhythm, which she experienced as a student, is for her not just cerebrospinal fluid moving, but an energy she describes in the language of a shared field. Here, the interview becomes most speculative, and it helps to separate the usable advice (slow, attentive pressure; a client who is not bracing; a practitioner who is listening) from the cosmology attached to it.

What does wholeness mean for the yoga community?

Davis closes the thread by placing her work in a longer human tradition. Shamans, she says, describe healing as returning fragments of the self to the present moment. Modern therapists describe trauma integration as the path to wholeness. The yoga community, she notes, now asks whether true healing and holism can be accessed through the fascia. Her answer is yes, with the condition that the practitioner is embodied and present. For teachers and bodyworkers, that is the real takeaway: the claim about DNA and the mechanics of a gel may be disputed, but the emphasis on a grounded, unhurried, listening touch is a practice anyone can test on their own clients.

Where to go from here

Watch the interview itself to hear Davis in her own words, and then go back to the primary sources she cites: the interstitium paper in Scientific Reports, the tensegrity literature, and the work on mechanotransduction. Keep the speculative claims separate from the usable ones. A good next step is to practice slow, attentive pressure with a partner and notice what changes when you stop trying to fix what you feel and simply stay with it.

[0:00] and James Ashman says in his book energy

[0:03] medicine the new science the only way

[0:05] that you can explain how a baseball

[0:06] player would be able to hit a ball

[0:08] coming at him or her at 96 miles an hour

[0:12] is through the communication of the

[0:15] fashion and of the perineum the nervous

[0:18] system is too slow to be able to see how

[0:22] to respond when the ball leaves the

[0:24] pitchers hands that fast and sure enough

[0:28] they they stimulated a acupuncture point

[0:32] on the bottom of the foot

[0:33] they had a receptor at the top of the

[0:36] head in the nerve area where at the

[0:39] bottom of the foot and when they when

[0:41] they stimulated it it was point zero

[0:43] zero two seconds so much much faster in

[0:47] the fashio

[0:48] stimulation than in the nerve

[0:50] stimulation so all of ourselves are

[0:52] embedded in this stuff

[0:53] well John reasoned and through intuition

[0:56] saw this and all the great all the great

[0:58] innovations whether it's Alan Turing

[1:00] with the computer whether it's Einstein

[1:02] and the theory of relativity what he's

[1:04] going up in the elevator and we really

[1:06] understood when we change our our

[1:08] consciousness about something we're in

[1:10] the world as the world exists but

[1:12] something happens we come up out of the

[1:14] subway Edison used to go to sleep with a

[1:17] cannonball in Fort Myers you can see the

[1:21] cannon ball imprints on the floor he

[1:25] would fall asleep and the Cannonball

[1:27] would fall from his hand and he'd wake

[1:29] up and then he would change his

[1:30] consciousness and the answer to a

[1:32] question would be available to it

[1:34] well John in his intuition thought there

[1:38] was something about this gel that

[1:41] changed it melted it felt like melting

[1:45] butter stretching taffy and that's the

[1:47] way he described it from the late 70s

[1:49] all the way through the 80s all the way

[1:52] through the 90s and then in 2007

[1:55] jean-claude Gilberto presents us with

[1:58] strolling under the skin at the first

[2:01] fashion research Congress at Harvard

[2:02] John was shown that video and he got

[2:06] tears in his eyes and said and I'm

[2:09] getting chill bumps now because as he

[2:11] told us that's what so there is this

[2:16] fashion that changes it goes through

[2:19] what we call phase transition like water

[2:23] will become steam with heat molecules of

[2:26] water that are liquid dispersed into

[2:29] steam and then they then solidify into

[2:33] ice with change in transit entry and

[2:35] temperature well jello does this to

[2:38] jello comes to us as a powder in a box

[2:41] we pour boiling water on it it becomes a

[2:44] liquid we put it in the refrigerator and

[2:46] it becomes a gel well jello was a type

[2:49] one polysaccharide ground substance

[2:55] what's inside us is a type 2

[2:57] polysaccharide ground substance so in

[3:00] the joint itself hyaluronic acid

[3:04] hyaluronic acid is is a form of fashio

[3:07] that is almost liquid almost all water

[3:10] it has a little collagen that it has a

[3:12] little of this polysaccharide ground

[3:14] substance with elastin and and and so

[3:18] it's almost all water in in in the

[3:20] fashion in this area there's a lot of

[3:23] fluid and a lot of the fat is embedded

[3:25] in it in the fashion in our muscles it's

[3:27] a very spidery and the tendons it's very

[3:30] dense and very tight but you can stretch

[3:34] you can elongate that tissue all of this

[3:39] is to say that these polygons form this

[3:41] web that is under constant because we

[3:46] live in gravity compression the bones

[3:49] are constantly compressed and tension as

[3:53] well the tension is in the elastic and

[3:56] the and the and the the ground substance

[4:00] opening up and the compression is in the

[4:03] bones or the struts and Buckminster

[4:06] Fuller figured out he wasn't the founder

[4:08] of this heat but he put it into an and a

[4:11] geodesic dome he said look with this

[4:14] with the struts and the elastin the

[4:17] struts in the elastin under constant

[4:20] compression in tension because of the of

[4:22] gravity and the and our movement look

[4:25] what's happening inside with this

[4:27] fashion it's constantly changing form

[4:29] and it constantly allows us to be

[4:33] elastic not like Gumby we can't make a

[4:35] we can't turn ourselves into a knot but

[4:38] very much like somebody who's

[4:41] to shape-shift mimes do this very very

[4:44] well without words mimes go into these

[4:47] wonderful patterns and then they hold

[4:49] and you can see or dancing the tango to

[4:52] people being able to move to the music

[4:55] and and communicate with each other

[4:58] through through the movement through the

[5:00] skin through their proprioceptors to be

[5:01] able to follow each other watch dancing

[5:04] in the stars

[5:05] Milan Petra doing the Nile and Petra

[5:08] doing the tango and now is this is death

[5:14] but Petra moves him in such a way that

[5:17] he follows her and she follows him and

[5:19] that's biotin sacred a human tension

[5:23] integrity and that altogether allows the

[5:28] cells to be able it all of this is

[5:31] crystalline as soon as water is taken

[5:33] into our our bodies the h2o molecule

[5:36] flattens out becomes crystalline h3o -

[5:39] this is the work of Gerald it

[5:41] becomes crystalline the body changes

[5:43] that into crystal and that crystalline

[5:45] water goes into the tubules goes into

[5:47] the gel and then Donald Engler from

[5:49] Boston his work on Meccano transduction

[5:52] he said as soon as you place and we're

[5:55] back to the laying on of hands

[5:56] hmm soon as you place your hands on

[5:59] tissue and press the infrared energy the

[6:04] wave form of the infringement energy the

[6:06] electrons and the photons come out of

[6:09] your hands into the skin into the

[6:12] fashion the skin is embedded in follow

[6:15] the subatomic particles little electrons

[6:19] and photons in the microtubules of the

[6:23] fashion remember those tubules that form

[6:25] the polygons the electrons and the

[6:27] photons go into those tubules down to

[6:31] the cell membrane and the light and the

[6:34] event of tubules of the fashio go

[6:37] through the cell membrane in the

[6:39] integers become the cytoskeleton of the

[6:42] cytoplasm of each cell

[6:44] the electrons go down the cytoplasm in

[6:47] these tubules in the cell into the

[6:49] nucleus of the cell and the DNA is

[6:53] transformed by the energy of your touch

[6:57] Wow John Barnes had no idea because that

[7:01] science has just been discovered since

[7:04] 2000 and it's been written about and now

[7:07] it's in the literature and then all of a

[7:10] sudden scientists who don't read this

[7:12] literature yeah to find this tissue and

[7:17] they discover this tissue last week it

[7:19] was published in scientific reports we

[7:21] discovered at NYU this new tissue and we

[7:25] got to call it interstitial well the

[7:28] interstitial is nothing more than the

[7:30] fashio that surrounds the organs and

[7:33] it's lymphatic and it's fluid and they

[7:35] found the polygons and because they

[7:37] always just took the tissue it took the

[7:39] water out and Albert said Georgie said a

[7:41] long time ago Osmond was there with him

[7:49] Albert said Georgie said we're doing

[7:51] this all wrong we're doing the science

[7:52] all wrong the cellular science is all

[7:54] wrong you're taking the cells in here

[7:56] centrifuging them getting the cells out

[7:58] of the fluid throwing the fluid away

[8:00] dehydrating the cells slicing the cells

[8:02] looking under the microscope and

[8:03] thinking that's life that's not like you

[8:05] throughout the life with the fluid john

[8:08] barnes teaches that in myofascial

[8:09] release one and when I heard that in

[8:12] 1989 in myofascial release one I knew

[8:15] that this man understood

[8:17] it's he understood and what I felt when

[8:21] I felt the cranial rhythm which we now

[8:24] know is not just the cerebral spinal

[8:26] fluid flowing around the meninges and up

[8:29] and down the spinal cord it's the energy

[8:31] of the Akashic field pushing in and

[8:37] pushing and pulling and that energy that

[8:40] we feel as the cranial rhythm is the

[8:43] energy of all of the cells you can feel

[8:45] the cranial rhythm at the feet when

[8:47] you're tuned in you can feel the cranial

[8:49] rhythm when you're touching in if you're

[8:51] tuned in that you what we call channel 3

[8:53] getting out of your left brain not

[8:55] trying to figure it out being open to

[8:57] what do I feel here what's the energy

[9:00] where is this 4% 96% of all that is is

[9:06] dark to us but it's available to us if

[9:09] you tune in if we tuned into that

[9:11] channel 3 we get out of our left brains

[9:13] get away from just this 4 percent that

[9:16] we can see and touch and taste and smell

[9:18] in here and get into that feeling sense

[9:22] of what our hands are placed on tissue

[9:25] and be curious cats and say what what's

[9:28] under here what can I

[9:31] and then press it down as John says to

[9:34] where people that were that each person

[9:36] pushes back too much will ruin the you

[9:40] can't you can't get the release that you

[9:42] want you can't get the piezo when I

[9:43] think effect you can't get the electrons

[9:45] flowing in the tissue too little you

[9:47] miss it it just barely

[9:50] you can energetically impact but you're

[9:52] not connecting with the ground systems

[9:54] you look down to where the person pushes

[9:57] back take a breath it open see the open

[10:02] your hands and let the energy flow out

[10:04] and center yourself and in the tissue

[10:08] have the person breathe that's in yoga

[10:10] breathe under your hands especially if

[10:13] you're in the thorax have them move

[10:14] their ribs under your hands feel where

[10:17] the where the fashion is pulling was

[10:19] tight and you can feel there's a

[10:22] tightness coming over up from the left

[10:24] shoulder and you get that message

[10:26] intuitively know we've got to go up and

[10:28] release the left shoulder here and the

[10:31] patient says how did you know that's

[10:32] where I was feeling and you're led by

[10:35] the wisdom of the fashion web and that's

[10:39] what John Barnes discovered now he

[10:42] doesn't get sufficient credit for this

[10:44] because he didn't do the randomized

[10:46] control practice because he understood

[10:48] that every person is different you can't

[10:50] do you can't follow the rules of

[10:53] randomized controlled trials because you

[10:55] have to treat everyone in the moment as

[10:57] they are and in randomised trials do you

[10:59] have to pretend everybody's the same and

[11:01] do the same thing with everybody and get

[11:03] the same result and then if you get more

[11:05] than a 50% result then you're happy you

[11:08] say that well what I did probably made a

[11:10] difference but with myofascial release

[11:11] what are our outcomes our outcomes are

[11:13] 90 to 100% every patient that gets up at

[11:17] the table says

[11:17] I feel different and that difference is

[11:19] better I feel better yes yes I feel

[11:22] better I feel lighter and I treated a

[11:25] wonderful woman who it 78 years old she

[11:28] had a stroke she had low back pain she

[11:30] was walking with a walker she couldn't

[11:32] speak she only spoke Spanish to start

[11:34] with and she couldn't she couldn't find

[11:36] the words that she but she would let me

[11:39] know that she had lumbosacral pain so I

[11:41] I got her on the table I saw that she

[11:45] had enough sleep we opened up the the

[11:46] side and then we had her go on her back

[11:49] and I did a simple lumbosacral

[11:51] decompression where I opened up the

[11:53] sacrum with as John teaches you have him

[11:56] sit in your palm and then you open up

[11:59] the lumbosacral and then opened up her

[12:01] so as area and she got up off the table

[12:04] she oh oh oh and she was saying it is as

[12:10] clearly as she could I feel so much

[12:13] better with a half an hour practically

[12:17] of treatment no what does that have to

[12:19] do with yoga yeah well with yoga no

[12:22] matter what form of yoga as I understand

[12:25] the other what you're doing is yoga

[12:28] you're linking the energetic essence of

[12:31] who you are with the energetic

[12:33] essence of the atashi feeling yeah and

[12:36] you might do that through your heart

[12:37] energy you might do that through your

[12:38] breath you might do that through you are

[12:40] through your meditation through the

[12:43] Kundalini energy coming up the the the

[12:46] dural too but at the top of the head but

[12:48] the whole concept of yoga is to yoke to

[12:51] link how we are this dense

[12:54] physical structure to change our

[12:57] perception of this dense physical

[13:00] structure into one that is energetically

[13:03] alive enough that we can that we can

[13:07] imagine being opened up to link to the

[13:11] beyond and how we do that might be

[13:15] through meditation might be through

[13:17] chanting might be through listening to a

[13:20] meditation centering ourselves getting

[13:22] in touch with that Akashic field that

[13:24] source energy that's inside of us but

[13:27] John teaches oh but true Barnes

[13:30] myofascial release is yoga therapy

[13:33] mm-hmm because when we are in this

[13:35] channel 3 energy when we get out of our

[13:37] left brains when we set ourselves when

[13:40] we're curious cats when we're in contact

[13:43] through the skin with our hands either

[13:46] through traction or pressure and shear

[13:48] or rebounding when we're centered in

[13:51] that channel 3 energy we are linked with

[13:54] the source energy and our energy coming

[13:57] through us through our compassion

[14:00] resonates in wave form with the energy

[14:04] of the person no matter where they are

[14:06] we are resonating with their energy now

[14:09] if they can get out of their left brains

[14:10] enough and get into their bodies that's

[14:13] all we ask them to do dive into our

[14:15] bodies feel what's happening under our

[14:16] hands leave those thoughts and feel and

[14:20] through the emotions and they're

[14:22] connecting with us they feel that now we

[14:26] have a closed chain that moves up to the

[14:31] Akashic field and then good Barnes

[14:33] myofascial release will say breathe into

[14:35] your lungs open your lungs move your

[14:39] ribs open your lungs and through the

[14:40] breath feel your breath pushing against

[14:44] the fashio with the fluid the 95% fluid

[14:48] of our bodies 90% of there are 70 30

[14:52] percent fully wood of our bodies and

[14:54] feel the fluid of the cells pushing

[14:56] against the fashion restrictions opening

[14:59] up that ground substance with the breath

[15:01] and then channeling that breath out into

[15:04] the Akashi

[15:05] feel and then the wisdom of the ages the

[15:08] intuition the knowledge of where I now I

[15:12] get it I need the journal more now I get

[15:14] it I that exercise that's really wrong

[15:16] for me now I get it that I really do

[15:19] need to stay away from carbs now I get

[15:21] it that if I do my pelvic tilts before I

[15:24] get out of bed in the morning my spine

[15:26] will be ready to take my weight now I

[15:28] get it

[15:29] that's the wisdom that's the very

[15:31] personal individual wisdom just as John

[15:35] says every person has their point of

[15:38] resistance you match that you met in you

[15:42] to link the connected leg with each

[15:44] person that opens the energetic to thank

[15:59] you

[16:01] you know and um you said earlier

[16:04] something about the bio photons moving

[16:06] through yes light yeah and yeah so do

[16:12] you get a sense that that can get

[16:14] interrupted or that can get like you

[16:17] know in some circles they talk about

[16:19] energy blocks yes yes that's physiologic

[16:23] yeah okay this one that ground so 1,600

[16:26] and condenses all the cells that are

[16:28] better than that mm-hmm collapsed the

[16:32] middle Andrea can't get the oxygen that

[16:36] they need to do the ATP for the energy

[16:39] of the cells the cells can't

[16:45] the landing strip for the airport oh you

[16:47] know what it's just is just 20 minutes

[16:49] west of here and there's the ocean right

[16:51] there so I'm right they come in off the

[16:53] ocean when I'm coming anyway that's the

[16:58] noise that you felt when us when there's

[17:00] a fashion restriction when there's a

[17:02] actually a dehydration of the jail it's

[17:05] either through the the the byproducts

[17:08] the inflammatory afforded inflammatory

[17:10] system is through posture it's through

[17:12] repetitive motion all golfers come to me

[17:15] with rotation of the of the trunk and

[17:17] tennis players rotation of the trunk so

[17:19] we have to de rotate their trunk and

[17:21] then work with their extremities people

[17:23] who sit at a computer like this forward

[17:25] shoulders forward head that dehydrates

[17:28] the fascia and if you're not drinking

[17:30] enough water of course there's a fallacy

[17:32] than this water business if you're

[17:33] drinking a lot of water your fastest

[17:35] restricted your water is just gonna

[17:36] you're gonna pee it right out right

[17:37] you've got to have open enough fashio

[17:40] for the water that you drink to get out

[17:43] of the capillaries into the fashio

[17:45] through pressure and shear or through

[17:48] movement and that's how fashion takes

[17:50] the water but if you're dehydrated

[17:52] you're not going to get the water that's

[17:54] that's there to be had but just drinking

[17:56] water is not going to lubricate your

[17:58] fashions but if you have a fashion

[18:00] restriction you are literally blocking

[18:03] homeostasis your liver you look blocking

[18:05] the ability of the immune system to work

[18:08] of the endocrine system to work because

[18:09] it works through the fashion that's what

[18:11] this wonderful new discovery was yeah

[18:13] you discovered that well if there's a

[18:15] lymphatic drainage in this in this in

[18:18] these polygons that are fluid filled

[18:20] maybe that's the route of metastasis yes

[18:23] because it surrounds all of the organs

[18:25] well it's the root of everything then

[18:28] they're on the road to finding that yeah

[18:30] and and give Marto is is correct when he

[18:33] says in John Sharkey

[18:35] what is it about us we were so enamored

[18:38] of our results we didn't care whether

[18:41] science understood this we would explain

[18:43] it to our patients and then give Martos

[18:44] movie we thought was getting out to the

[18:46] science world we did not find a way to

[18:50] get into the cellular physiology sissies

[18:52] pathologists enough to be able to get

[18:56] them to pay attention to us mm-hmm so

[18:58] that they would never embarrass

[19:00] themselves to say we discovered Columbus

[19:06] embarrassed himself how long would you

[19:12] say that so the people of the fashion

[19:15] community and people that have been

[19:17] researching it like Alberto how long

[19:19] would you say this knowledge has been

[19:21] out there in within the sort of fashion

[19:24] communities and well that you should ask

[19:28] well certainly John James Osmond has

[19:32] been writing about it since the late 90s

[19:34] okay energy medicine the new science

[19:37] came out in 1999 and that's all about

[19:41] fashion not about how fast she conducts

[19:43] energy and that's why I go to that is my

[19:46] main textbook and now their offers and

[19:48] the manual therapists that aren't so

[19:50] enamored of energy and game art Oh

[19:52] wasn't either give our toe in his first

[19:55] edition of strolling up the skin talked

[19:56] about these tubules as being perhaps

[19:59] conductors of energy he backed off on

[20:03] that last summer mm-hmm he said he

[20:06] wasn't sure about that mm-hmm

[20:08] in the presence of John Sharkies

[20:11] section class at least that's the way I

[20:12] understood them they're not as concerned

[20:15] to me that's the answer to everything to

[20:18] me as a transporter cell energy it

[20:21] explains why I can have ESP with my twin

[20:25] sister and that's why I started this

[20:26] journey at 20 in 1970 and 19 what was it

[20:29] 1965 I said there my science that I'm

[20:32] studying in chemistry and biology and

[20:34] physics is not giving me the answer to

[20:36] why my sister and I buy the same coat on

[20:38] the same day in two different cities why

[20:40] why when she turns which we're hooked up

[20:44] to an EEG in one room she and the light

[20:48] bulb goes on and she she closes her eyes

[20:50] her EEG changes I'm in another room 50

[20:53] yards away the light bulb didn't go on I

[20:56] don't close my eyes my eg changes at the

[20:59] same moment Wow and I saw that and I

[21:02] said well how can you deny that mm-hmm

[21:05] at 20 and as a scientist I was

[21:08] fascinated to find a science that gave

[21:13] me the answer to how my sister and I

[21:15] were linked how would she got pregnant

[21:17] with her first child neither one of us

[21:18] could drink coffee she wasn't that I was

[21:20] consonant that was a pretty mmm we loved

[21:22] coffee so then she had Jonathan I

[21:25] thought oh good she nursed him and she

[21:30] neither one of us could drink coffee for

[21:31] two years and then finally she started

[21:34] drinking coffee I started drinking

[21:35] coffee those are the things she yeah

[21:37] cannot explain right true and what we're

[21:40] calling outliers to the bell curve oh

[21:42] that's just an outlier well that's just

[21:44] an outlier mm-hmm and of course if you

[21:46] were if you weren't drawing the tissue

[21:48] and slicing it and putting it under a

[21:49] microscope and you came up with a

[21:51] different result well that was an

[21:52] outlier because you didn't use the right

[21:54] research technique right you didn't use

[21:56] Steadman's

[21:59] guidelines the gold standard gold

[22:03] standard of randomized control trials

[22:05] placebo base you you this is

[22:07] pseudoscience mm-hmm pseudoscience yeah

[22:10] and the hubris yeah of pseudoscience you

[22:13] know to be accused John and still is

[22:17] being accused of of teaching

[22:19] pseudoscience and I being accused of

[22:21] trying to shut down our program it out

[22:23] at Miami because I was teaching

[22:25] pseudoscience and the students I asked

[22:29] you Bartow it at breakfast in June last

[22:32] year we ready breakfast John yeah ponder

[22:34] Bowman in jean-claude and I were having

[22:36] breakfast in Scotland and it's not give

[22:39] her to us videographer came to me last

[22:45] week and said he wanted to he wanted to

[22:47] do a what will it take people to

[23:09] about this tissue and he said what all

[23:12] people understand

[23:15] that fashion is this the ground

[23:21] nothing could be alive

[23:27] yeah that's it hmm whether it's now

[23:31] they're growing stem cells on the

[23:34] scaffolding of spinach right now for a

[23:38] cardiac tissue hmm that scaffold I mean

[23:44] the Great Creator created us in such a

[23:49] way that it's compression and tension

[23:52] this biotin sacristan unit that is made

[23:57] up of all soft tissue and the physics of

[23:59] soft tissue hasn't been written yet

[24:01] Stephen Levine says you know when you

[24:04] start studying fulcrums and weights and

[24:06] levers and angles and you're studying an

[24:08] elbow and yup von der Waal comes along

[24:10] with this embryology research he says

[24:12] there's no fulcrum here hmm and then

[24:14] this this is not the tendon attaching to

[24:17] the bone this is the tendon becoming

[24:21] bone in the periosteum there's no tip

[24:25] there are no attachments hmm there are

[24:27] no attachment there are no layers it's

[24:29] all the web there there's the part of

[24:32] the web there's closest to the surface

[24:33] but there's no there's no layer now when

[24:36] you cut in and you and you make layers

[24:39] then you have what they have in the

[24:42] anatomy books and you have this dead

[24:45] tissue that's layered because the fluid

[24:47] is different but when you put that

[24:49] endoscope in and that's that's that's

[24:51] the new technology that they came up

[24:52] with with the discovered interception

[24:55] they came up with a new endoscopic

[24:57] technology that that stains the polygons

[25:02] and you put a laser light into it you

[25:03] can see it much more vividly than give

[25:06] art oklet just with a light at the end

[25:08] of the endoscopy to the camera so at the

[25:11] Fashion Congress in 2018 in Berlin

[25:14] I hope Roberts wife said he thinks that

[25:16] the teal and the people from Theo and

[25:19] the people from NYU somebody will be

[25:21] there to talk about this endoscopic

[25:24] technology and what hopefully we'll have

[25:26] videos it just enhances what we already

[25:29] know mm-hmm how long have people known

[25:31] about this well I I certainly didn't

[25:35] know about this 3-dimensional web in the

[25:37] way I always thought of it as a kind of

[25:39] a saran wrap mm-hmm and that I didn't

[25:42] understand I heard it but I didn't

[25:43] understand the embedded idea and that I

[25:46] didn't understand understand biotin

[25:49] segregate until 2016 when I went to the

[25:54] first buy of tensegrities conference and

[25:56] I asked John asked me to go to represent

[25:58] Barnes myofascial release to the bio

[26:00] intensive reading community and they

[26:02] were curious but they didn't pick it up

[26:05] they're still on structure they're still

[26:07] fascinated by structure and they but to

[26:10] me it's in those tubules this

[26:14] consciousness yes

[26:15] in those two years here's the ground

[26:17] substance of how we literally know who

[26:21] we are in space this is who we are in

[26:26] this

[26:27] and consciousness is both outside of us

[26:30] in wave form and inside of us as this

[26:34] insight into who and how we are and

[26:37] that's what puts us at the top of the

[26:40] food chain not the fact that we can

[26:41] oppose but that we can self-regulate

[26:44] that we have homeostasis without having

[26:48] to think about it that the

[26:50] electromagnetic field in some way sends

[26:53] instruction into the fashion that the

[26:56] liver does liver the heart does heart

[26:57] all the same DNA but that the

[27:01] instructions that are given to the RNA

[27:04] in the cells of the heart that goes into

[27:06] the DNA and takes the exact in the in

[27:09] the nucleus of the cell the RNA goes in

[27:11] it takes people set half of the DNA it's

[27:14] necessary for cardiac function takes it

[27:17] out and this is bruce lipton takes it

[27:19] out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm

[27:21] makes the chain the protein chain linked

[27:25] so and the the ATP is being produced by

[27:29] the medic Andreea and then the cell of

[27:32] the heart does what it needs to do as a

[27:35] cardiac muscle I mean that's the

[27:38] information that comes from the wisdom

[27:41] that's all it's our genetic structure in

[27:44] the electromagnetic spectrum it's not

[27:46] just heat it's us in wave form dictating

[27:50] and this is not my science this is

[27:52] science I can't tell you where I got it

[27:53] probably Gregg Braden Bruce Lipton those

[27:56] are the scientists that I would go to to

[27:59] look for this information

[28:00] GRE GG Braden and that science is coming

[28:04] in and that's the first time I've

[28:06] explained it with such clarity to myself

[28:09] but Bruce Lipton taught me that you

[28:12] you get the information there's the DNA

[28:14] in that cardiac cell but the cardiac

[28:16] cell only has car it has my DNA same DNA

[28:20] is in the liver so it's that it's the

[28:22] information in the tubules that gets

[28:26] down through the cell membrane through

[28:28] the cytoplasm in the microtubules of the

[28:30] cytoplasm into the cell and then the RNA

[28:33] the rip messenger RNA goes into the DNA

[28:37] the DNA is a double helix it goes it

[28:40] strips back as Bruce lifts us of strips

[28:43] back that with a perfective layer of the

[28:45] DNA which we think now is cardiac john

[28:48] sent me this tape this wonderful youtube

[28:51] tape of the fact that the energy that

[28:54] comes from the heart and the pulsating

[28:55] of the heart seems to be what binds the

[28:58] DNA into the double helix hmm that

[29:01] energy is the double helix energy John

[29:03] Jesse's wonderful science and of course

[29:07] I know he wants me to write about us

[29:08] moment I will John I promise and I'm

[29:11] telling you about it first but the

[29:13] energy from the heart is coming in it

[29:15] fueling this energy in the tubules goes

[29:17] in that RNA takes half of the DNA strand

[29:21] that it needs and then it reconstitutes

[29:23] itself I don't know quite how that does

[29:25] that comes out into the cytoplasm and

[29:28] forms the protein chain that tells the

[29:31] heart to be a heart so what this heart

[29:34] cell should do

[29:35] same to the pancreas liver same with the

[29:38] pancreas same with the brain same with

[29:40] the nerves same with everything now

[29:43] think of the engineering this video how

[29:46] could you how could you know all this

[29:48] and believe it all happened just by

[29:50] chance mmm to watch a baby and that's

[29:53] why you should take you up vanderwaal's

[29:55] course on embryology is three times here

[29:58] in the United States this summer in

[30:00] Maine and Oregon and places if you can

[30:05] take his weekend course where he talks

[30:07] about the the blast of seal forming in

[30:10] the music I'm and then the space he said

[30:13] there is no music on this Jesse Mesa and

[30:15] out of the Mesa comes the muscle the

[30:18] muscle forms out of the Mesa hmm the

[30:21] muscle is formed by the fashion by the

[30:24] ground of the fashio not vice-versa

[30:27] Wow then it's the fashion it's the

[30:29] fiberglass of the fasciae that forms the

[30:31] muscle and the fashion that forms the

[30:34] organs and it's the structure of the

[30:36] fashion that is the scaffolding where

[30:39] the cells can grow for the heart and we

[30:41] know that now

[30:42] we're taking stem cells and growing them

[30:44] and then we're energetically now pulsing

[30:47] into them in increments into the heart

[30:50] cells so that they start pulsing on

[30:52] their own and then they pick up and now

[30:54] we're starting to recognize if you want

[30:56] to create tissue you have to mimic

[31:00] fashion around substance you have to

[31:03] mimic the scaffolding now how do they

[31:05] mimic consciousness yeah yeah and when

[31:08] science finally discovers and

[31:15] I'm Deepak Chopra when Deepak Chopra has

[31:20] scientists coming together and one of

[31:21] them is hammerschmidt and Penryn Rosen

[31:23] and Hameroff Penrose and Hameroff John

[31:26] quotes all the time about the fashion in

[31:28] the brain and how the fashion in the

[31:30] brain conducts stimuli in the brain they

[31:37] hammer office is a anesthesiologist a

[31:40] scientist who's talking about

[31:42] consciousness being outside of us and

[31:43] inside of it and Deepak Chopra got these

[31:46] scientists together the physiologist

[31:49] quantum physicists wonderful scientists

[31:52] talking about how the consciousness

[31:54] inside of us moves through the

[31:57] consciousness around us and when we're

[32:00] open and when we're most of it is when

[32:02] we're out of our left brains when we're

[32:04] falling asleep or when we're in the

[32:05] dream state or when were when we're so

[32:18] we're getting this information if we're

[32:20] open to it but the only way we're open

[32:22] to it is if it if we get a stroke of

[32:24] insight mm-hmm that's Jill Bolte Taylor

[32:26] she had to shut off the way this stroke

[32:28] shut off her left brain and be open to

[32:32] her I pray that she knew it is late to

[32:34] positivity do you know that when she was

[32:35] healing like Heather's healing now from

[32:38] her stroke she put a sign on her door

[32:40] and said take responsibility for the

[32:43] energy that you bring in my room don't

[32:46] come into this room with negative energy

[32:48] she took control of the energy of her

[32:51] healing

[32:53] that positivism and that optimism and

[32:56] that choosing to visualize the possible

[32:58] is all late to the Akashic field to yoga

[33:03] to barns to open it getting rid of the

[33:06] negative John want you to take unwinding

[33:07] right away take my pleasure of these

[33:09] first learn the basic principles then

[33:11] take on YT start to get rid of the

[33:13] negativity that's grounded in your fat

[33:15] shop get negative it so that you can

[33:17] open up yoga fashion tender the

[33:21] blessings yeah and I think of unwinding

[33:24] is that as that moving from that higher

[33:27] state of consciousness or a channel

[33:29] three and I wonder is that the my

[33:32] intuition is that that's the way we find

[33:34] those places that are stuck in those

[33:36] fashion restrictions because if we're

[33:37] always moving from channel 5 we're

[33:40] always moving from the linear we're

[33:41] always walking the same way and getting

[33:43] in another car the same way but we're

[33:45] not necessarily accessing those places

[33:46] that might be restricted yeah and don't

[33:49] have the consciousness and the power

[33:50] photons and the liquid yeah so we move

[33:53] from channel 3 which would be true yoga

[33:56] then we can start to actually untangle

[33:58] them right and I did until this

[34:00] conversation and didn't really get the

[34:02] fullness of the link that every barns

[34:05] therapist who's a linked truly linked

[34:07] with channel 3 mm-hmm

[34:09] yeah that's true yoga I mean really

[34:11] they're yoked my picked up a yoga

[34:14] therapist about holding her own for 3 to

[34:17] 5 minutes yeah but I hadn't made that

[34:22] and it's you were being here this

[34:24] weekend and the comments that you made

[34:26] to my students and the comments in our

[34:29] conversation and now this

[34:31] conversation and I hope that I see over

[34:35] here oh yeah I would think I think he

[34:37] would agree mm-hmm but John always

[34:39] surprises me you know I'm always

[34:41] surprised by his wisdom

[34:42] I'm always informed by his intuition he

[34:48] has access to the Masters yeah I don't

[34:50] have although you're helping maybe to

[34:52] get access through your questions I

[34:54] think he's a true yogi and so are you

[34:57] and Emily thank you for that and

[35:03] pleasure I love that because when I am

[35:06] in that place doing Barnes myofascial

[35:08] release as I do

[35:09] what by myself then with Tara and Craig

[35:12] and what we do when we work when we code

[35:14] treat or when I co treat with anyone

[35:15] who's really tuned in that lifts me to a

[35:19] level that I never dreamed as a physical

[35:21] therapist

[35:25] John introduced it to me I've maintained

[35:29] and gone and repeated courses and read

[35:31] and listened and and worked with him and

[35:34] he's contributed to my writing and and

[35:36] together I've gotten to this place in my

[35:38] life and in the autumn of my life where

[35:42] I'm able to really live these principles

[35:47] go to the barrier and wait mm-hmm you

[35:49] can't take your patients anywhere where

[35:51] you haven't been mmm go to there is

[35:55] everybody's resistance is different be

[35:57] like

[35:58] it's no push against don't push against

[36:01] yield and then she said yesterday

[36:04] beautifully in in the in my fashion

[36:07] release you let the patient lead

[36:09] especially in unwinding you're not

[36:11] dictated you're not pushing a protocol

[36:13] and that's what physical therapy is

[36:15] you're pushing a protocol you're pushing

[36:17] what you've learned the research told

[36:19] you to do mmm-hmm in my affection

[36:21] release you're helping the body and in

[36:23] unwinding the body will find its still

[36:25] point and I was doing this for you at

[36:32] break and you unwound and and also that

[36:45] mmm

[36:45] my my consciousness and energy came back

[36:49] into the place that had been restricted

[36:51] and as you were holding me and and so

[36:54] that I think the collaboration is a part

[36:56] of it to that your hands were there but

[36:58] that your hands being there guided my

[37:02] awareness to that place in my body and

[37:04] the movement guided my consciousness

[37:05] back into that place well that's a

[37:07] that's the key to Barnes yes it's but

[37:09] it's the palpation bringing the

[37:11] awareness to ya know you can do that

[37:13] through your breath and with the ball

[37:15] yes you've shown you and that's why we

[37:18] give the softballs to people it brings

[37:20] their consciousness to that place and

[37:22] breathing into that place if you just

[37:25] put the ball there and lie there and and

[37:27] and do your Facebook I mean you might as

[37:31] well not do anything at all you've got

[37:33] to be able to bring your consciousness

[37:35] to that place and through your breath

[37:37] say to yourself John's magic words

[37:42] and watch that restriction untangle and

[37:48] I've heard snaps bushes when I hear the

[37:54] whoosh I think of you the whoosh iki

[37:58] energy comes up into my face I get sweat

[38:01] beads under my eyes my mouth sticks to

[38:04] me and I know that that's letting go

[38:07] mm-hmm and physiologically we are making

[38:10] that phase transition from solid to

[38:13] liquid gel mm-hmm and then the cells not

[38:19] only can breathe they can receive

[38:21] nutrition they can get rid of waste from

[38:23] me from that meta conjugation and the

[38:26] cell action and they can receive and

[38:28] most importantly they can receive the

[38:30] vibration of thought and what thought is

[38:33] healing to them don't come into this

[38:36] room take responsibility for the quality

[38:39] of your thoughts before you come into

[38:40] this sort of meeting your state optimism

[38:42] yeah mm-hmm an appreciation appreciation

[38:48] beautiful day as your so would I would

[38:52] just put the Abraham tapes on in the car

[38:54] because I'd be thinking how am I gonna

[38:56] get the students to talk to each other

[38:57] about a service when they think that

[39:00] they're here to learn a range of motion

[39:02] strengthening muscle testing how do I

[39:04] get them to talk about assertiveness and

[39:06] I and Abraham says don't worry about it

[39:08] just line up line up believing that once

[39:13] they get it I go into the classroom I

[39:21] always start with grounding them turn

[39:24] your lights off close your books close

[39:25] your computers close your eyes

[39:27] track your breath mmm feel the breath

[39:29] feel inside your bodies now let's talk

[39:32] about and that's what John does - John

[39:35] has us starting with grounding breath

[39:38] feeling the energy coming up glowing

[39:40] with the energy and then hmm and

[39:44] centering yourself before you ever put

[39:47] your hands on a patient yes and then and

[39:49] then approaching the patient like a

[39:51] curious where is it going to direct me

[40:00] through the vasomotor response through

[40:02] the pole through the tongue through the

[40:04] intuition the left shoulder blade

[40:09] and then following your intuition

[40:11] because you believe it

[40:15] that's us as human being since we're

[40:19] meant to live that's who we're meant to

[40:21] be yeah that's what we signed up for

[40:23] yeah but when we're in the state of true

[40:25] yoga so what so I'm just one more thing

[40:29] the so when the phase transition happens

[40:32] and it's more liquid than solid right

[40:35] that would be helpful for the biophotons

[40:37] because oh yeah because then they can

[40:39] flow

[40:39] okay the tubules get crushed right there

[40:41] they're springy

[40:43] they have elastin ecology to them but if

[40:45] you've got a facial restriction mm-hmm

[40:47] it's crushed right and you can see that

[40:49] on Kim Bart oh you can see where the web

[40:52] is open then all of a sudden you'll see

[40:53] this tight line and it's not a nerve

[40:55] it's not a blood vessel

[40:56] it's just fashion this question together

[40:58] John shows it in this slides with

[41:01] repetitive motion injury and how the

[41:03] tubules up that the polygon borders even

[41:06] though it's a slice under a microphone

[41:08] micro let's go the the tubules are

[41:12] fractured and they're and they're torn

[41:14] and then myofascial release or they're

[41:16] thickened yeah and then my own fresh

[41:18] release opens it up and then the web can

[41:20] do literally literally not figuratively

[41:22] this is my verbally this is a metaphor

[41:24] they literally open up and flow heads

[41:28] and that's what patients say I feel and

[41:31] life said four years ago you can feel

[41:34] flow there's so you know the

[41:35] mechanoreceptors don't pick that and

[41:37] then he finally said ah I found the

[41:39] nerve endings in the fashion this was

[41:41] just last year or two years ago I found

[41:44] that 2015 was that with the last

[41:47] bachelor Congress I found the nerve

[41:49] endings in the Maya fashion that our

[41:51] interest sectors interesting

[41:53] interstitium interceptors yeah that I

[41:56] think are picking up the feeling of

[41:59] energy through the tissue and he finally

[42:02] had something to ground this idea see

[42:05] they don't want to talk about energy

[42:06] because I can't measure what's happening

[42:09] it's only a feeling it's an emotion

[42:11] that's subjective

[42:12] but but is it because they're studying

[42:13] dead cells like is that part of why they

[42:15] can't pick up on the energy that's a

[42:19] good yeah okay let's have a conversation

[42:37] you know anything somebody said to me in

[42:40] confidence I wouldn't say inside a

[42:42] severely strange about stuff like that

[42:46] when I first met John and I had done the

[42:48] dissertation about empathy and I felt

[42:50] there was an energetic crossing over

[42:51] this in 1970 77 to 82 and I said don't

[42:56] you think it's an energy flow doesn't

[42:58] that energy says don't say that I said

[43:00] I've attacked enough already

[43:02] he says of course that's what's

[43:04] happening but I can't talk about that

[43:06] yeah and one day yeah yeah Donna Walsh

[43:12] has a new conversations with God look

[43:14] out

[43:15] hmm and and you know he's channels these

[43:17] this wisdom and basically what it says

[43:20] he has I think 21 principles of an

[43:22] enlightened system

[43:23] mmm and that's when we don't compete

[43:25] with one another and it's not a zero-sum

[43:27] game and it's not everybody's helping

[43:30] everybody else and nobody's afraid mmm

[43:32] everybody's just sees everybody's

[43:34] connected to one another and if the

[43:36] worst thing this happened to you it's

[43:37] going to me and when you're in that

[43:43] enlightened state that's just very

[43:44] obvious how everything is connected and

[43:46] yes the joy of that really it's us we

[43:52] teach selfishness the joy of

[44:05] it's the way life is meant to

[44:08] this great girl thank you so much i well

[44:12] mine what a bless your time but this is

[44:14] amazing thank you thank you very much

[44:17] for your questions and for your openness

[44:19] and for for your writing and for your

[44:21] teaching

In the interview, Carol Davis describes biotensegrity as a way the body holds its shape through continuous tension in the fascial web and compression in the bones. She compares it to Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome, where struts sit under compression and a connected web carries tension. She argues this lets the body change form constantly while staying stable.
Davis describes fascia's ground substance as a mostly watery material that shifts between fluid and firm states, using gelatin as an everyday analogy. She says the tissue responds to pressure, warmth and time, which is why she treats it as dynamic rather than static. These are her claims as presented in the interview.
Davis describes the interstitium as a fluid-filled, fascia-like tissue surrounding organs and lymphatic channels, which she says researchers at NYU described in a 2018 paper in Scientific Reports. She argues that standard lab methods that dehydrate and slice tissue missed this living structure. Check the original paper for its methods and findings.
Davis claims that pressing on tissue can move energy through fascia and microtubules into the cell nucleus, and says that DNA is 'transformed by the energy of your touch.' Mechanotransduction, the conversion of mechanical force into cell signals, is a real research field, but the claim that therapist touch rewrites DNA is her interpretation and is not established by the data she presents.
Davis describes the state of yoga as being united with what is, rather than fighting or struggling against it. For manual therapists she says this means staying present, curious and non-analytical during contact, rather than forcing a technique. She argues it changes what clients experience.
Davis's practical advice is to press in slowly, avoid rigidity, and ask the client not to push back, since resistance blocks release. She also recommends getting out of analytical thinking and staying curious about what you feel. Treat these as teacher guidance and test them with proper training and supervision.
