[0:54] Hi Bonte. Good evening.
[0:57] >> Good evening.
[0:58] >> Good evening.
[1:00] >> Yeah, I have some insightful things to
[1:03] talk to you about later. Um, I had a
[1:07] good meditation
[1:09] session. Really, really good.
[1:15] [clears throat]
[1:15] >> When was that?
[1:17] >> Uh, it was Monday, full moon night, too.
[1:19] It was great.
[1:23] >> So, you got some good insights.
[1:25] >> Yes. Um, as a matter of fact, I had two.
[1:30] The first one was after I sat meditating
[1:33] and it was for a short period of time
[1:35] like a half an hour 45 minutes.
[1:37] Generally I sit longer like maybe hour
[1:39] and a half but after I got after this
[1:42] after I concluded the session I I I sat
[1:45] on the cushion and I thought
[1:49] I think I'm using the seven facets of
[1:52] enlightenment
[1:53] to suppress the hindrances.
[1:56] And I thought about it and I went back
[1:58] and I looked at them all and I found out
[2:01] yes I've been using the seven faces of
[2:04] enlightenment to suppress the hindrances
[2:07] to allow me to to sit down and practice
[2:10] johnic meditation and it never dawned on
[2:13] me until that session I concluded.
[2:17] Well, because one of the factors of
[2:19] enlightenment is is concentration, which
[2:22] is,
[2:23] you know, so therefore you're practicing
[2:26] the seven factors of enlightenment.
[2:30] If you, of course, that's the last
[2:32] that's the last one. Anyway, it's 7:00
[2:35] now, so I'm going to start the uh
[2:37] >> Okay.
[2:38] >> the the program. Yeah.
[2:43] >> [clears throat]
[2:58] >> Okay friends, uh so let's uh go ahead
[3:01] and begin by reciting the namotasa and
[3:05] the three refues for those who want to
[3:08] to do that. [clears throat]
[3:20] sasavas
[3:38] arhat
[3:40] sama.
[3:41] Bas
[4:08] duty.
[4:19] Chari
[4:37] sang.
[4:45] >> [clears throat]
[4:48] >> So good evening friends. Welcome to this
[4:51] Wednesday evening dharma discussion and
[4:54] meditation practice.
[4:57] So, uh, I hope you're all able to
[5:01] receive the mailing I sent out on Monday
[5:06] and have read the suta
[5:09] that I uh shared the link to. Now this
[5:14] suta is entitled the the eight bases of
[5:20] indolence or you could say laziness
[5:23] and the eight bases of energy in terms
[5:28] of uh our practice of the dhhamma.
[5:33] Now, this is like a a followup
[5:37] of the reflections on uh death
[5:43] that we've been going over on the last
[5:46] two weeks
[5:49] because as we mentioned in those
[5:52] reflections and preparing for death,
[5:55] it's about learning how to, you know,
[5:58] eliminate the the negative uh thoughts.
[6:02] and habits from your mind before you
[6:07] know the death happens. Because if the
[6:10] mind still has negative thoughts and and
[6:13] memories and let's say unfinished
[6:16] business like you know still holding
[6:19] grudges against people
[6:21] and uh so on strong cravings and so on
[6:25] then these are uh factors that could
[6:29] influence the mind's wherever the mind
[6:33] you know takes uh its next uh journey in
[6:38] the next life. So, uh this suta
[6:42] is about you know generating
[6:46] the the energy to practice and not sort
[6:50] of putting off or neglecting
[6:54] uh the dharma practice
[6:57] uh and especially the meditation
[6:59] practice
[7:01] uh thinking you you do it later because
[7:04] as we've already realized death could
[7:06] come at any time and that tomorrow or
[7:09] the next life. We don't know what's
[7:11] going to come next. You know, our karma
[7:14] is so is not able to, you know,
[7:17] determine
[7:19] uh what's going to happen even in the
[7:21] next five minutes.
[7:24] So anyway, so I'm going to share the
[7:27] screen on this um
[7:30] suta and uh and go over it.
[7:48] I hope.
[7:56] Is it suta on your screen?
[7:59] It's probably not.
[8:01] I don't know why I always have this
[8:02] problem. Oh, here it is.
[8:05] Okay.
[8:09] Can anybody out there do you see the
[8:11] suta on your screen?
[8:16] Nobody's answering me.
[8:20] >> Oh, yes. Yes. Now we Oh, it came for a
[8:22] while.
[8:23] >> Uh, no.
[8:25] Yeah. Okay. I'm Okay. Here we go.
[8:30] [sighs]
[8:32] >> No.
[8:34] No.
[8:36] >> Oh, yeah. It's side by side. It's
[8:38] rectangular.
[8:40] >> Yeah. It was the prior weeks. It was
[8:42] It's not
[8:43] >> right. It's It's a little different
[8:44] because of the just the way it it
[8:47] happened. [laughter]
[8:48] >> Okay.
[8:49] >> Uh
[8:52] so this uh I'm going to just read some
[8:55] of it in case uh you didn't were able to
[8:58] read it or just to remind it.
[9:02] So the Buddha is talking to the monks.
[9:03] Monks these are the eight bases of
[9:05] indolence. Now this doesn't pertain only
[9:08] to monks but it pertains to you know any
[9:12] practitioner really. Uh so you know a
[9:16] person has some work to do and the
[9:20] person thinks oh there's some work for
[9:23] me to do but when I do it I will it will
[9:27] tire me physically so I better lie down
[9:30] now and and get some rest and skip my
[9:34] meditation.
[9:36] So the person lies down without putting
[9:38] forth the energy to attain the
[9:41] unattained
[9:43] to master the unmastered
[9:45] to realize the unrealized.
[9:48] This is the first base of indolence.
[9:52] So to attain the unattained what does
[9:54] that mean? That means if you haven't yet
[9:58] been able to develop your uh concentrate
[10:02] mindfulness and concentration to the
[10:04] point of being enlightenment factors or
[10:08] at least uh you know uh
[10:12] you know weakening the hindrances and
[10:15] being able to attain at least the the
[10:18] first Janna then that's the unattained
[10:21] because attaining the first Janna is a
[10:23] requisite for the enlightenment factor
[10:26] of concentration
[10:29] uh and uh to help all the other factors.
[10:32] So the unattained in this in the sense
[10:35] of uh meditation would be to be able to
[10:40] overcome the hindrances and attain at
[10:42] least the first Janna so that the
[10:45] mindfulness and the other enlightenment
[10:47] factors can be developed to master the
[10:51] unmastered.
[10:52] So it basically means the same thing.
[10:55] Mastering the ability to get into
[10:57] meditation to sustain meditation for
[11:01] longer periods to develop uh a more uh
[11:07] you know continuous level of of
[11:10] mindfulness at least to some degree and
[11:13] to realize the unrealized. And the
[11:15] unrealized means uh you know to attain
[11:19] uh entering the stream and that first
[11:22] realization of nibbana.
[11:26] So that's what those three phases mean
[11:28] to attain the unattain
[11:30] to master the unmastered
[11:33] to realize the unrealized.
[11:35] So this is the first base of indolence
[11:38] having to do thinking people have some
[11:41] work to do. So they think, "Oh, I
[11:43] better, you know, rest now and uh, you
[11:46] know, so I'll be able to do my work."
[11:50] But that's the way the mind plays games
[11:52] on us. And then they they oversleep the
[11:54] time and then when they get up, oh no,
[11:56] it's too late. And and so they, you
[11:58] know, wind up skipping their morning or
[12:00] evening meditation or whatever it might
[12:03] be. [clears throat]
[12:04] Uh
[12:06] so the second one is I have done some
[12:09] work after finishing the work.
[12:13] Uh then the person says well now I've
[12:16] done this work but I'm tired now so let
[12:19] me lie down. So one lies down and then
[12:23] misses the the next uh time for
[12:26] meditation. They lie down without
[12:28] putting forth the energy to attain the
[12:31] unattained to master the unmastered to
[12:34] realize the unrealized.
[12:37] This is a second basis of indulence
[12:42] or apart from work a person's oh I have
[12:46] to make a journey oh I have to I have to
[12:48] drive uh you know somewhere and you know
[12:52] so I don't have time to uh you know
[12:54] meditate or that that making the journey
[12:57] will tire me physically so let me lie
[12:59] down now and rest and and then they get
[13:02] up late and then have no time to
[13:05] meditate uh and then go on their journey
[13:09] without putting forth the energy. That's
[13:12] the third basis of indolence. Or the
[13:14] person after making the journey they say
[13:17] I have made the journey the journey's
[13:18] over now but you know now I'm tired so
[13:21] let me lie down. So they lie down and
[13:24] then they don't get up for the you know
[13:27] time for their next meditation.
[13:31] So they lie down without putting forth
[13:33] the energy.
[13:36] uh
[13:38] the fourth basis of indolence
[13:42] or the person has made the journey and
[13:44] they think oh I already read that one
[13:46] okay
[13:48] or this pertains to
[13:51] monks going through a village but a
[13:54] person lay person could think oh I have
[13:56] to prepare food now it's going to take
[13:58] me a long time I have to go shopping and
[14:00] and prepare the food and and so they
[14:03] they skip their meditation
[14:07] And then uh
[14:10] and then the person wanted for arms and
[14:13] have not gotten enough food.
[14:16] So they say my body is tired and
[14:18] unpliable. Let me lie down. And they
[14:21] skip their meditation
[14:24] or they get enough food
[14:27] and then they say, "Oh, I'm full now and
[14:30] my body is heavy and unpliable like a
[14:32] load of soaked beans." I like that
[14:36] analogy. [laughter]
[14:37] So, oh, let me lie down. And they lie
[14:40] down and go to sleep and then skip their
[14:42] meditation again
[14:44] without putting forth the energy to
[14:46] attain the entertain.
[14:48] It's the six bases of indulence
[14:52] or there arises some slight illness in
[14:55] the person and they think, "Oh, this
[14:57] illness has arisen. I'm too tired. Let
[15:00] me this is a good reason to lie down.
[15:04] lie down. They lie down without putting
[15:06] forth the energy. And then when they
[15:09] recovered from the ailment,
[15:12] uh they think I've recovered from that
[15:15] ailment. I re I'm recently arisen from
[15:17] sickness. My body is still a little
[15:20] weak. So let me lie down. So they lie
[15:23] down and again uh uh skip their
[15:26] meditation practice.
[15:29] That's the eighth basis of of indolence.
[15:33] Okay. Now let's look at the eight bases
[15:36] of energy
[15:39] which is the way you know a person of
[15:44] you know practitioners should should
[15:46] think. There's some work for me to do
[15:49] but if I do it it will not be easy to
[15:51] fix my mind on the Buddhist message. So
[15:53] before that let me provide for that. And
[15:56] so they before the work they they sit
[15:58] down to meditate. They put forth energy
[16:01] to attain the unattained, to master the
[16:04] unmaster, to realize the unrealized.
[16:08] And as they put forth the energy
[16:12] uh
[16:13] you know then they they make progress.
[16:16] This is the first basis of energy
[16:19] or they have they have done some work
[16:22] and they think I have done some work and
[16:24] I've been able to I skip my meditation
[16:26] so let me get up and do my meditation
[16:29] now rather than saying oh I'm still weak
[16:32] and you know go to sleep again
[16:37] it's the second basis of energy and then
[16:40] the same thing is repeated for the
[16:42] journey I have to make a journey but let
[16:45] me meditate first before I go on the
[16:46] journey, let me manage my time instead
[16:49] of people always put off things until
[16:51] the last minute. Then they have to rush
[16:54] to to do things because they don't
[16:56] manage their time and so they have to
[16:58] skip their meditation.
[17:00] Uh
[17:06] or if they've made the journey and they
[17:08] weren't able to do their meditation, so
[17:10] let me do it now before doing something
[17:13] else.
[17:16] And then the same with the arms. Uh
[17:20] you know let me meditate before going on
[17:23] wandering for arms. You know get up an
[17:25] hour earlier instead of putting it off
[17:28] to the last minute.
[17:30] Uh or what going for shopping if you
[17:33] know if you're a lay person going to get
[17:36] some food. Uh so doing that first
[17:43] and then
[17:45] uh you know after having
[17:49] eaten while the body is still strong and
[17:51] pliable
[17:53] it's put forth the sit to meditate.
[17:58] So anyway these are the uh and then the
[18:00] same with the illness.
[18:03] There has arisen some slight illness in
[18:05] me. It's possible this might get worse.
[18:07] Let me let me let me sit now before it
[18:10] gets even worse and get that energy.
[18:13] So, I'll provide for that and put forth
[18:15] the energy
[18:19] and then after they have recovered from
[18:21] the ailment, I'm recovered from that
[18:23] ailment
[18:25] and it's possible the ailment may return
[18:27] in me. Before it returns, let me put
[18:29] forth the energy
[18:32] to attain the unattained.
[18:35] So amongst this is the eight bases of
[18:39] energy.
[18:41] So that's how uh you know a dharma
[18:43] practitioner should try to uh you know
[18:46] how they help to
[18:51] you know increase their dharma practice
[18:53] and not letting the mind
[18:55] uh make excuses because you know the
[18:58] mind is very clever in making up excuses
[19:01] and it's not only these things maybe you
[19:04] sit down to meditate and you for oh I
[19:07] forgot to feed the cat so you're going
[19:08] to get up after 15 minutes and feed the
[19:11] cat and then you get distracted and you
[19:13] don't go back to sit again. So instead
[19:16] say now the cat can wait an hour. Cats
[19:18] are independent. You know you finish
[19:21] your meditation and then go feed the cat
[19:23] or whatever else it was. You know
[19:26] because
[19:28] these things are common. You sit down
[19:30] and after 15 minutes a little pain
[19:32] starts to rise in your butt. Oh, I
[19:34] forgot to send Uncle Joe an email. Then
[19:36] I better do that now or call so and so.
[19:40] And so you get up out of your meditation
[19:42] and then after you've done the call or
[19:44] did the email you get distracted and you
[19:47] wind up not going back to the
[19:49] meditation.
[19:50] So you know that's how you know people's
[19:54] uh dharma practice you know
[19:58] stagnates.
[19:59] Anyway that's how a person should uh
[20:03] practice.
[20:05] Okay. So
[20:08] having uh gone through that suta now I'm
[20:13] going to uh see if there's any questions
[20:16] and let's look in the chat box. I'm
[20:19] going to stop the sharing
[20:24] and uh
[20:27] see if something came up in the chat
[20:29] box.
[20:36] That's not really a question.
[20:40] Okay. So, does anybody have any uh
[20:44] questions or comments even from your own
[20:48] practice? Does anybody recognize any of
[20:50] those uh states of uh [clears throat]
[20:55] laziness in their own practice?
[21:00] Hi Bonty, if we can continue our
[21:03] conversation from earlier um when I told
[21:06] you that after I sat in meditation on
[21:09] Monday, I realized how the seven fats of
[21:12] enlightenment were allowing me to go
[21:14] into the jas and they match up so well
[21:19] and I was able to realize that after the
[21:22] meditation session. So I wanted you to
[21:24] comment on that. And the second insight
[21:27] I had
[21:29] related to a verse in the dharmapata. Um
[21:32] I had done some reading and after I sat
[21:37] it reminded me of what Bonte G always
[21:39] says. There is no concentration without
[21:41] wisdom. No wisdom without concentration.
[21:44] One who has both concentration and
[21:46] wisdom is close to peace and eman and
[21:49] emancipation.
[21:51] And then I I thought about what I read.
[21:55] concentration and wisdom. Wisdom sprouts
[21:59] from concentration. I used to think
[22:01] there were two things, two separate
[22:03] things, but one is the outgrowth of the
[22:06] other.
[22:08] And I didn't realize that. That was the
[22:10] second thing I realized.
[22:12] So, if you could comment on on on those
[22:14] two things.
[22:17] Well, uh
[22:20] they're they're equated those two
[22:22] because in the seven factors of
[22:24] enlightenment, you're developing wisdom
[22:28] starting with mindfulness and then
[22:30] investigation.
[22:31] While you're doing that, you're gaining
[22:34] degrees of concentration and you get the
[22:37] the the energy, you get the the joy and
[22:40] the happiness. Uh and then that leads to
[22:45] concentration.
[22:47] And the concentration leads to deeper
[22:51] wisdom.
[22:52] Uh so you know it's uh you know those
[22:57] things are very much connected and the
[23:00] mindfulness leads to concentration
[23:03] and the concentration
[23:05] is boosts up that mindfulness like a 100
[23:09] octane to a much higher degree than you
[23:13] could without the concentration. So, a
[23:16] lot of people practice mindfulness, but
[23:18] it's it's a mediocre level of
[23:20] mindfulness because they haven't gained
[23:22] the concentration needed to make that
[23:25] mindfulness a factor of enlightenment.
[23:29] And uh that's why it's called a factor
[23:30] of enlightenment because it has the uh
[23:33] degree of johnic concentration to boost
[23:37] that mindfulness to actual factor of
[23:39] enlightenment that sees clearly the
[23:42] arising and vanishing of phenomenon.
[23:47] Uh people say they see arising and
[23:49] vanishing but it's it's it's a at a
[23:52] mediocre level. It's not at a real real
[23:54] sharp uh level because uh you know
[23:58] concentration is like turning up the
[24:00] power of a microscope
[24:03] you know and if you if you're trying to
[24:05] look at a drop of blood and you only you
[24:08] know you might turn up a little bit the
[24:11] microscope maybe you'll see a cell but
[24:14] you don't see any molecules or atoms. So
[24:17] it's a very it's a it's it's not deep
[24:20] wisdom.
[24:22] Anybody knows that you know anything
[24:24] it's made has a cell in it. But then
[24:27] when you gain the concentration the
[24:29] Janna is like turning it up the power of
[24:32] the microscope to the level of you
[24:34] actually see a a molecule within the
[24:37] cell. You see molecules
[24:39] and in the molecules you might see DNA.
[24:43] And if you turn the power up more, like
[24:45] even in second, third or fourth genre,
[24:47] you might see atoms
[24:50] and the electrons whizzing around the
[24:52] atoms. That's deeper and deeper wisdom.
[24:54] Each of those levels is a deeper level
[24:56] of wisdom because ordinary wisdom, okay,
[25:00] we see the outer body. We see, oh, we
[25:02] see how it gets sick and fall down and
[25:04] break an arm. Oh, Anita, that's very
[25:07] superficial
[25:09] wisdom. But when you see how fast cell
[25:14] cells cellular vibrations and molecular
[25:17] vibrations are arising and vanishing in
[25:19] terms of moments of consciousness,
[25:22] that's a whole different ballgame. You
[25:25] know, that's a deeper level of wisdom.
[25:27] And then going on to see no self, that's
[25:30] even a deeper level of wisdom. So the
[25:33] Janna's help that the more you have the
[25:36] Janic power, the deeper that wisdom will
[25:38] be. First Janna will give you a good
[25:41] level. Second Janna will give you a
[25:42] deeper level. Third Janna will give you
[25:44] even a deeper level. And with the fourth
[25:47] Janna, you can attain stream entry or
[25:50] even any of the other stages.
[25:54] >> Just just one final thing. Um
[25:58] this all seems to be leading me from
[26:00] duality to singularity.
[26:03] I'm seeing things not so much in a dual
[26:07] aspect now. I'm seeing them as a oneness
[26:10] and that's leading me to no self. It's
[26:14] leading me to the unconditioned. At
[26:17] least I believe that's what's going on.
[26:20] >> Yeah.
[26:23] >> Thank you.
[26:24] [snorts]
[26:25] >> You're welcome.
[26:33] Anybody else uh have some question?
[26:36] Okay. Looks like Jennifer has her hand
[26:40] raised up there. Okay.
[26:43] >> Thank you, Vante. You're so kind and
[26:45] thank you so much for the teachings.
[26:49] Um, this is just so profound and so
[26:52] truth. But my angle is different as I
[26:57] base the investigative factor from the
[27:00] sac novel truth which is the desire and
[27:04] it's from that that I can see how I
[27:07] create the suffering that is in me and
[27:12] when I see that bante it gives me energy
[27:17] it gives me which is another word for
[27:20] more inspiration more wanting
[27:23] to delve into
[27:26] and from that this stillness but is
[27:30] based all on that suffering that I
[27:33] create in my environment
[27:36] and um my own um the desire and this
[27:41] impulses and what really helps me is
[27:45] when I see so instead of atoms or
[27:49] protons on all that what I see in My
[27:52] reality is I see the impulses, the
[27:56] impulse to grab, to gravitate, to
[28:00] incline.
[28:02] And that has helped me tremendously
[28:06] uh with the wisdom part and the wisdom
[28:09] part is is such a support for the
[28:13] concentration and it leads to stillness
[28:16] and I also see the example that you
[28:20] beautifully put it. So often the self
[28:24] and the melting ice cube
[28:27] um I'm able to also contemplate that and
[28:32] end up with this beautiful emptiness
[28:36] but is a question of do it again and
[28:40] again and again and again and the all
[28:43] the factors of enlightenment with the
[28:46] second noble truth and the even the
[28:49] paramese they all work together as the
[28:52] force supportive factors to one another.
[28:55] Thank you, Bonte, for all your kindness
[28:57] and your generosity.
[28:59] >> Yes. You know, there's three uh what are
[29:02] called the three dharma doors. You've
[29:05] heard of uh you know, an duka and anata.
[29:09] So, some people get their deepest
[29:11] insights through focusing on ana
[29:15] impermanence. Other people get their
[29:18] deepest insights on focusing on duka
[29:20] like you did.
[29:21] >> That that's me, Bante.
[29:23] >> Yeah. Uh but that will lead you to gain
[29:27] concentration
[29:28] by not by weakening that craving and
[29:31] then you get you'll get the deeper
[29:33] insights into emptiness or that leads to
[29:36] you know the self falling away and
[29:38] things like that. But some people
[29:40] specialize focus more in the beginning
[29:43] like you f you've uh uh focused because
[29:46] you found a good benefit and focusing on
[29:49] craving. Well, that's fine because then
[29:51] that that will lead to the other other
[29:54] uh things. Other people who have a a
[29:58] different uh bent uh will focus on uh
[30:03] ana
[30:04] and by by focusing on a niche they'll
[30:07] get the insights into craving and no
[30:10] self too and other people might start
[30:12] with focusing on no self and by focusing
[30:15] on no self they'll also realize the
[30:18] nature of craving and suffering. So all
[30:21] those three things people might
[30:25] individuals are different and so they'll
[30:27] they may start with what seems to be
[30:31] work for them easier but as they uh make
[30:35] progress in that then the other ones
[30:37] also will come into focus like you were
[30:40] saying you know that focusing on the
[30:43] craving help you to you know experience
[30:46] that ice cube you know [clears throat]
[30:49] of the ego melting. Yes.
[30:51] >> And I'm so excited about the upcoming
[30:53] retreat. I'm really excited about the
[30:56] Thanksgiving retreat. I'm I'm so
[30:59] grateful for this three four days
[31:01] opportunity. I'm I'm just like
[31:04] >> Yes. Yes. I'm dying to see what is the
[31:08] outcome of everyday meditation and all
[31:10] that. Thanks again, Pante, so much.
[31:13] >> You're welcome.
[31:15] Any
[31:18] other uh questions?
[31:22] Okay. Uh there's a Haley, you have a
[31:26] question.
[31:27] >> What is the ice cube metaphor?
[31:30] Can you share it?
[31:32] >> Uh the ice cube metaphor is a a metaphor
[31:37] for the ice cube is floating. Let's say
[31:42] you have an ice cube that's floating in
[31:44] a
[31:46] a glass of water or a pond, let's say,
[31:49] or a bowl. You have an ice cube. Now,
[31:52] the ice cube is frozen water, right?
[31:57] >> Yes.
[31:58] >> Yes. Yes.
[31:59] >> Okay. But it thinks it's different from
[32:03] the water. The ice cube thinks it's
[32:05] different from the water, but it's
[32:06] actually frozen water.
[32:10] But because of the frozen thing, it
[32:12] thinks it's separate from the water
[32:13] around it.
[32:15] So when that ice cube melts under the
[32:18] fire of wisdom
[32:20] through the the mindfulness,
[32:21] concentration and wisdom, the ice cube
[32:25] gradually melts. So when it totally
[32:27] melts,
[32:30] then what happened to the ice cube?
[32:33] Can you say my water disappeared or give
[32:36] me my water back?
[32:40] You can't say that, right?
[32:42] >> No, no,
[32:43] >> it's become the water. So that's the
[32:45] simile. That's what happens in
[32:47] meditation
[32:48] when you develop those enlightenment
[32:50] factors or some other forms of
[32:52] concentration. I mean for temporarily of
[32:55] course you you get that experience or an
[32:58] effervescent tablet also works. You know
[33:02] these uh vitamin C tablets you drop in
[33:05] water and they go
[33:07] and it gets smaller and smaller until
[33:09] finally the last little hard piece
[33:11] dissolves. So that's what happens when
[33:14] you expand the awareness when you tune
[33:17] in through through contemplating craving
[33:20] when you step stop grasping at various
[33:22] objects and you tune in to impermanence
[33:25] and you see how quickly each mind moment
[33:27] is arising and vanishing. There's no
[33:30] time for the the self to uh recreate
[33:34] itself because the feeling of self
[33:36] depends on your attention to the object
[33:39] any of the five aggregates. So when you
[33:42] speed up the rate of awareness you
[33:44] expand the awareness where the there's
[33:47] so many things coming the mind can't
[33:50] hang on to any particular thing and it
[33:53] dissolves. That's that's the trick.
[33:57] That's what happens in the vipasha
[33:59] meditation.
[34:02] >> Thank you.
[34:04] >> You're welcome. Now Lori, I think you
[34:06] had a a question too about or somebody
[34:09] had a question. I saw it about explain
[34:12] what the unmastered was or the
[34:15] unattained.
[34:17] Did you miss the first part of the
[34:20] program?
[34:22] Anyway, I so in that suta
[34:28] The Buddha said the the uh unattained,
[34:31] the unmastered and the unrealized. So
[34:34] the unattained mean if you haven't
[34:36] attained Janna yet, that means that's
[34:38] the unattain. You should strive to
[34:40] develop the concentration that attains
[34:43] the the Janna. Uh and the unmastered is
[34:46] being able to go in and out of it at
[34:48] will. Mastery means, you know, a lot of
[34:52] people struggle. They're lucky if they
[34:53] have one out of 10 good meditations,
[34:57] you know, or different levels. But when
[35:00] you master it, a person can sit down and
[35:02] within a just a a few seconds or a few
[35:06] minutes, one could enter that deep state
[35:09] of awareness or concentration. That's
[35:12] called mastery.
[35:14] And then the un the unobtained
[35:18] uh or the unrealized means actually the
[35:21] uh realization of once returning never
[35:26] returning uh once I mean stream entry
[35:30] once returning never returning into our
[35:32] hardship
[35:34] that's called the unrealized
[35:36] so that's
[35:39] that's that's the way I describe it
[35:42] >> thank you I appreciate it and I says
[35:44] here I just wasn't clear on the
[35:46] unmastered part like I I wasn't writing
[35:48] down fast enough the three different
[35:50] things. So thank you.
[35:52] >> Okay.
[35:52] >> Yeah. The mastery means being able to
[35:55] enter a state of Janna or awareness very
[35:58] quickly and stay in it as as long as you
[36:02] kind of want and and then come out of
[36:06] it. But you know that that's a very
[36:09] advanced level. So, but at least it
[36:12] means to be able to get it quite often,
[36:15] you know, get regularly. Uh you don't
[36:17] have to struggle so much to to get into
[36:20] those states.
[36:25] Okay.
[36:27] So, I see a hand from Nisanka
[36:31] or Hey Manta
[36:35] at the retreat. Somebody asked,
[36:37] >> "Turn up your volume please. I cannot
[36:39] hear you.
[36:44] I cannot hear you.
[36:54] >> Okay, I'll talk at the retreat.
[37:01] >> I still it's very weak. I can kind of
[37:03] hear, but uh can anybody else hear
[37:05] there?
[37:08] Any of you others out there? You can
[37:09] hear what she's saying.
[37:11] >> It's very quiet.
[37:12] >> Yeah, it's very soft.
[37:13] >> Yeah,
[37:24] >> it's in 100.
[37:28] >> Okay. At the retreat, somebody asked who
[37:31] is the observer and who observes?
[37:37] who is the observer and who observes
[37:41] uh the ego consciousness
[37:47] you know in the beginning when we
[37:49] meditate we have the sense of oh I am
[37:51] I'm trying to concentrate I'm I'm I'm
[37:54] observing I'm seeing this and that
[37:58] uh and so it's the ego consciousness
[38:03] but when you that ego consciousness
[38:05] dissolves olves
[38:07] there's still hearing and so on and
[38:11] observing but nobody nothing observed
[38:14] and there's awareness. So awareness is
[38:17] aware of things but without the sense of
[38:19] an eye being there. It's very radical.
[38:22] It's a it's a paradigm shift within
[38:25] consciousness.
[38:27] And uh and so a lot of people haven't
[38:30] reached that level to really uh
[38:33] understand that. That's a very kind of
[38:36] advanced uh level when that sense of
[38:39] self totally uh dissolves.
[38:43] But until then, there's still this
[38:44] little trace of an eye there.
[38:49] In the beginning, it might be very
[38:51] strong, but then little by little as the
[38:53] awareness expands, as you stop clinging
[38:55] and reacting to things, that sense of
[38:58] eye gets less and less. Like I mentioned
[39:01] in that analogy of the uh of the ice
[39:05] cube, you know, the ice cube gradually
[39:07] gets smaller and smaller and smaller and
[39:09] smaller until you know, but at that
[39:13] point when the ego starts to really
[39:16] dissolve, a lot of people get scared
[39:18] because it's like they're going to die.
[39:21] And so the fear of death is what pe
[39:23] people pulls people back
[39:27] and doesn't allow that ego to totally
[39:29] dissolve.
[39:31] That's why the contemplation of death is
[39:33] an important contemplation. It's a
[39:35] preparatory contemplation to understand
[39:38] that that's perfectly fine if the ego
[39:40] dissolves. It's going to be wonderful.
[39:43] But a lot of people have no idea of that
[39:45] they because their whole life is
[39:48] centered around their sense of self.
[39:52] And so you know the the ultimate goal of
[39:56] dharma is is understanding that you know
[39:59] [clears throat]
[40:01] but it's the hardest thing you know it's
[40:04] the hardest thing to understand that's
[40:06] why normally it is said that ana
[40:09] impermanence is the easiest thing to
[40:11] understand and then that craving causes
[40:14] suffering because of that impermanence
[40:16] and you can't hold on to things
[40:20] uh and then and then the the no self is
[40:24] usually the hardest thing to understand
[40:27] but again people are different so
[40:30] but generally speaking that's a that's
[40:33] the
[40:34] gradual
[40:36] development of that
[40:42] >> okay any uh
[40:45] did answer your question nanko or hanta
[40:56] Did you hear what you said? What he
[40:57] said? She says yes.
[40:59] >> Okay, good.
[41:01] >> Thank you.
[41:04] Okay friends, if there's uh not u any
[41:09] more questions, I don't see any other
[41:11] hands lifted up.
[41:13] Then we will uh take a short break and
[41:17] then come back and have a
[41:21] a session of some breathing and some
[41:25] exercises to get centered in the body.
[41:28] Hopefully get, you know, centered in the
[41:31] present moment. and then sit down for
[41:34] the meditation. Okay. So, we'll see you
[41:37] back in a few minutes.
[46:31] >> [clears throat]
[46:40] [clears throat]
[46:41] >> Okay friends, try Stand straight.
[46:46] Relax your arms at the sides.
[46:50] Just gently close your eyes.
[46:55] Just feel your feet pressing the floor.
[47:02] I feel the height and weight of the feet
[47:05] of the body over the feet
[47:12] through your head balanced on top
[47:17] through your eyes and the sockets.
[47:23] Then begin some deep slow breathing.
[47:26] Threepart breathing.
[47:29] Drawing the air from the lower lung up
[47:32] to the upper [clears throat] chest, the
[47:34] upper lung.
[47:36] Feel that expansion of the chest. Hold
[47:39] the air in for two or three seconds.
[47:45] Then slowly breathe out feeling the last
[47:48] bit of air go out.
[47:53] Take a few more deep slow breaths like
[47:56] that. Developing this mindfulness
[48:00] of breathing in, letting go of the past
[48:03] and future.
[48:06] Hold the breath.
[48:10] Breathing out.
[48:13] Standing here and now.
[48:16] Feel the air go out.
[48:20] Breathing in, letting go of the past and
[48:23] future.
[48:30] Breathing out,
[48:32] standing here and now.
[48:39] Breathing in, feeling the whole body.
[48:49] Breathing out, feeling the whole body.
[48:57] Now we're going to combine this
[48:58] breathing with these movements,
[49:03] stretches.
[49:06] Do the movement while breathing in,
[49:08] holding that position for two or three
[49:12] seconds, returning to the starting point
[49:15] of the opposite direction on the out
[49:18] breath,
[49:20] repeating each exercise three times
[49:24] the whole time. Keep your attention
[49:27] focused in the body.
[49:29] Feeling the sensations generated by the
[49:32] breathing,
[49:34] stretching,
[49:36] letting go of your thoughts.
[49:42] You can open your eyes and observe as I
[49:44] lead you through it. So on the next in
[49:47] breath, raise your arms over the head.
[49:50] Interlock the fingers. Turn the palms
[49:53] up. Straighten your arms. Stretch your
[49:56] head back. Look at the back of your
[49:58] hands.
[50:00] Stretch up.
[50:03] And the outreath, release your fingers.
[50:06] The outreath, arms back to the side.
[50:08] Feel the air go out.
[50:13] Once more. Inb breath.
[50:19] Stretch up. Bend back a little. Feel
[50:24] the sensations. Feel the arch in the
[50:27] lower spine.
[50:30] Out breath. Arms back to the sides. Feel
[50:34] the air go out.
[50:39] Once more in.
[50:46] Stretch up. Bend back a little more.
[50:49] Hold it a little longer. Feel
[50:54] the sensation
[50:59] out breath. Arms back to the sides. Feel
[51:02] the air go out
[51:05] and relax.
[51:07] Close your eyes. Keep feeling the body.
[51:14] Feel the increased sensations especially
[51:17] in your hands and fingers. Feel
[51:22] the clothing touching the skin.
[51:29] Feel your feet pressing the floor.
[51:33] Just remember the present moment.
[51:37] Standing.
[51:40] Stand.
[51:45] Stand.
[51:48] letting go of your thoughts
[51:51] so that your thoughts come and go in the
[51:53] back of the mind
[51:56] and keep the outline of the standing
[51:58] body in the front of the awareness
[52:03] looking into a mirror
[52:06] watching the body standing
[52:10] breathing feeling sensations
[52:22] On the next inb breath, lift up on the
[52:24] balls of the feet while raising the
[52:26] hands over the head. Face the hands
[52:29] toward each other 5 in apart and stretch
[52:33] up
[52:35] the outreath. Come back down. Feel the
[52:39] air go out as the arms come down.
[52:45] Use the inb breath to help lift up the
[52:47] body. Blowing up the helium balloon.
[52:52] Body rises up. Stretch
[52:58] out out.
[53:00] Go out
[53:06] once more in
[53:12] stretch.
[53:27] Relax.
[53:28] Close the eyes.
[53:33] Feel the increased sensations.
[53:40] The head on top, arms at the sides,
[53:43] clothing touching the skin,
[53:46] feet pressing the floor.
[53:52] Spear hold that outline of the body in
[53:54] the mind's eye.
[54:03] Present moment. Body centered awareness.
[54:25] Now we're going to do
[54:27] side bending using one arm at a time.
[54:31] On the inb breath, raise your left arm
[54:34] up. Keep your fingers and arms straight
[54:37] close to your head. On the out breath,
[54:40] bend over your right side as far as you
[54:43] comfortably can.
[54:48] Let the right hand slide down by the
[54:50] knee. Little stretch in the side.
[54:54] In breath lift up
[55:01] and again to the right. Out breath
[55:12] in breath
[55:17] once more.
[55:33] >> [clears throat]
[55:33] >> The out breath lower the arm
[55:37] here go out.
[55:42] Extend breath. Raise the right arm up.
[55:49] Three times to the left side. Out breath
[56:01] in.
[56:06] Out.
[56:20] Once more.
[56:24] Hold it longer.
[56:34] Breath.
[56:37] Out breath. The arm
[56:41] close the eyes. Keep feeling the body.
[56:46] Keep pressing the floor.
[56:50] Hands and fingers at the sides
[56:55] touching the skin.
[57:00] The head balanced on top
[57:05] and lips touching together. The eyes in
[57:08] the sockets.
[57:15] More sensations of the body. You can
[57:18] notice less for your mind
[57:22] [clears throat] carried away in other
[57:24] thoughts.
[57:26] Just remember standing
[57:30] standing
[57:37] enlightenment factor of mindfulness.
[57:45] Noticing all the different sensations
[57:47] coming in and going.
[58:08] [clears throat]
[58:11] Okay. Now spread your
[58:14] legs and feet apart about 3 ft.
[58:22] We're going to do twisting from right to
[58:24] left. Hold your arms out to the sides
[58:29] and breathe in.
[58:35] On the outreath, twist to the right.
[58:37] Keep your eyes focused on the hand going
[58:40] back.
[58:46] On the inb breath, come back to the
[58:48] front.
[58:51] Then let your feet turn with the body
[58:53] and twist to the other side on the out.
[59:03] In breath back to the trunk.
[59:06] Keep alternating sides like that with
[59:09] the breathing.
[59:11] Out breath the right
[59:20] in.
[59:26] Breath left.
[59:38] Once more to each side.
[59:48] Hold a little longer
[59:53] breath.
[1:00:09] Come back to the front.
[1:00:12] Lower the arms. Relax.
[1:00:17] Close the eyes. Feel each foot pressing
[1:00:20] the floor.
[1:00:28] Your clothing touching the skin.
[1:00:34] Your arms and hands hanging at the
[1:00:37] sides.
[1:00:45] Head balanced on the top.
[1:00:48] The eyes in the sockets.
[1:00:57] Present moment. Body centered awareness.
[1:01:31] Can now place the hands together at the
[1:01:33] chest
[1:01:37] and breathe in. Hands over the head.
[1:01:45] On the outreath, lower the hands to the
[1:01:47] chest and then bend the knees. Lower the
[1:01:49] body down.
[1:01:56] The end breath. Feel the muscles in the
[1:01:58] legs pushing the body up.
[1:02:08] Second time. Try to come down a little
[1:02:10] more.
[1:02:14] Stretch in the hips and knees
[1:02:21] in
[1:02:29] third time.
[1:02:44] >> [clears throat]
[1:02:49] >> Out breath
[1:02:51] back to the sides.
[1:02:55] Just keep feeling the body.
[1:03:08] Feel those changing sensations,
[1:03:14] perception of impermanence.
[1:03:19] So many body sensations coming and going
[1:03:25] arising and vanishing.
[1:03:29] It's both
[1:03:31] developing the factor enlightenment
[1:03:34] factor of mindfulness
[1:03:37] concentration to hold the attention in
[1:03:39] the body.
[1:03:41] Mindfulness is how quickly the
[1:03:43] sensations come and go.
[1:03:48] Mindfulness and concentration work
[1:03:50] together to support each other.
[1:03:55] More mindful you are, the more
[1:03:56] concentrated you become. The more
[1:03:58] concentrated you become, sharper that
[1:04:01] mindfulness
[1:04:04] becomes.
[1:04:25] Now we'll do the
[1:04:28] the forward [clears throat] and backward
[1:04:29] bending.
[1:04:32] Keeping the legs apart, the hands touch
[1:04:35] the front of the legs
[1:04:39] and breathe in.
[1:04:45] On the outreath, bend forward. Let the
[1:04:48] hands come down to your knees.
[1:04:52] Keep the head lifted up
[1:04:55] and keep the legs straight, the arms
[1:04:58] straight.
[1:04:59] Make the back flat like a tabletop
[1:05:03] in the spine.
[1:05:08] In the in breath, carefully lift up
[1:05:12] and move the hands under the buttocks
[1:05:14] for support.
[1:05:17] And gently let let the head go back.
[1:05:20] Breathe out. Gently bend back. Look up
[1:05:23] at the ceiling.
[1:05:27] Feel that arch in the spine.
[1:05:32] Carefully lift up or the inb breath.
[1:05:38] And again the outreath bending forward.
[1:05:41] Let the hands come below your knees.
[1:05:46] Feel the extra stretch in the leg
[1:05:49] muscles, back of the legs
[1:05:53] to keep the head lifted up
[1:06:02] in breath. This is
[1:06:06] again the back bend. Just
[1:06:11] stop breath.
[1:06:23] In breath, lift up.
[1:06:30] On the third time, let your hands come
[1:06:32] down the front of the legs as far as you
[1:06:36] can.
[1:06:38] towards your ankles or feet
[1:06:41] and hold on to that point as far down as
[1:06:44] you can reach.
[1:06:48] Let the little bones in the lower spine
[1:06:50] stretch out.
[1:06:55] Feel all those sensations in your legs
[1:06:58] and spine.
[1:07:01] Hold it a little longer.
[1:07:11] Then carefully lift up.
[1:07:16] [snorts]
[1:07:17] And once more the back bend. Just be
[1:07:19] careful
[1:07:21] of breath.
[1:07:37] In breath carefully lifted
[1:07:41] and on the outreath relax your shoulders
[1:07:44] and arms.
[1:07:48] Close the eyes. Feel the whole body.
[1:07:53] Each foot pressing the floor.
[1:07:58] Sensation of the legs spread apart.
[1:08:03] Fingers and hands touching the legs.
[1:08:09] Clothing touching the skin of your arm,
[1:08:13] legs, chest,
[1:08:19] head balanced on top.
[1:08:24] You feel your lips touching together
[1:08:30] through the eyes and the sockets.
[1:08:37] Feel all those body vibrations,
[1:08:41] the activated life force.
[1:08:52] Okay. And now bring your legs and feet
[1:08:55] back
[1:08:57] closer together.
[1:08:59] We'll do just one last simple exercise.
[1:09:04] Turning the head from right to left.
[1:09:08] Loosen up the neck vertebrae.
[1:09:12] Keep your chin lifted up level to the
[1:09:14] floor.
[1:09:18] On the inb breath, turn the head to the
[1:09:20] right.
[1:09:22] The twist in the neck. Look over your
[1:09:25] right shoulder.
[1:09:31] The out breath. Turn the head all the
[1:09:34] way back to the left.
[1:09:37] Look over your left shoulder.
[1:09:44] In breath back to the right.
[1:09:47] Concentrate into the neck vertebrae.
[1:09:51] Feeling or imagine loosening up
[1:09:59] breath back to the left
[1:10:10] once more to each side.
[1:10:23] Out breath lift.
[1:10:33] On the inb breath, let the head stop in
[1:10:35] the center.
[1:10:38] Keep the eyes closed. Feel the outline
[1:10:40] of the body.
[1:10:45] I feel that organic aliveness of
[1:10:49] the cells of the body having been bathed
[1:10:52] and drenched
[1:10:54] oxygenated blood.
[1:11:00] Try to imagine that you're feeling that
[1:11:02] you're standing on a vibrating machine
[1:11:08] getting all those vibrations from the
[1:11:10] soles of the feet up to the top of the
[1:11:13] head.
[1:11:21] Body centered
[1:11:23] present moment awareness.
[1:11:28] Natural awareness.
[1:12:00] Okay.
[1:12:02] So now let's mindfully
[1:12:04] come back to our seats. Get ready for
[1:12:07] the sitting.
[1:14:32] >> [clears throat]
[1:14:34] >> Just get comfortable in the sitting
[1:14:36] posture.
[1:15:39] >> [clears throat]
[1:15:41] >> Just try to align the back of your head
[1:15:44] and spine in a straight line.
[1:15:50] Try to find that center of gravity of
[1:15:53] the head and spine over the hips.
[1:15:58] Be that tipping point where you could
[1:16:01] either tip backwards or forwards.
[1:16:07] That would be a a good straight posture.
[1:16:14] Gently close your eyes.
[1:16:21] Just feel your head balanced on top of
[1:16:24] the neck.
[1:16:28] Keep the chin lifted up level with the
[1:16:31] floor.
[1:16:38] Just feel your eyes resting in the
[1:16:42] sockets.
[1:16:47] Feel your eyelids stretched over the
[1:16:49] eyeballs.
[1:16:56] Feel those subtle eye movements.
[1:17:01] Just relax your eyes.
[1:17:11] Relax your face muscles.
[1:17:22] From that point on the eyes, try to feel
[1:17:25] the outline of the sitting body.
[1:17:32] Feeling the head on top, arms at the
[1:17:35] sides,
[1:17:39] hands touching together,
[1:17:43] buttocks pressing the seat.
[1:17:50] Feel the way your knees are bent and the
[1:17:53] feet tucked underneath.
[1:17:58] Let's
[1:18:00] try to hold that outline of the body in
[1:18:03] the mind's eye.
[1:18:10] Then begin some deep slow breathing like
[1:18:13] we did in the yoga session.
[1:18:17] Going to do the threepart breathing,
[1:18:19] drawing the air from the lower lung up
[1:18:23] into the upper chest
[1:18:26] and hold the air in the lungs for two or
[1:18:29] three seconds.
[1:18:35] Then slowly breathe out feeling the last
[1:18:38] bit of air go out of the lungs.
[1:18:46] Just take several more deep slow breaths
[1:18:49] like that.
[1:18:50] Cultivating this mindfulness.
[1:18:55] Breathing in. Letting go of the past and
[1:18:59] future
[1:19:03] or the breath.
[1:19:07] Breathing out.
[1:19:09] Sitting here and now.
[1:19:13] Feel the last bit of air go out.
[1:19:17] Breathing in. Letting go of the past and
[1:19:20] future.
[1:19:29] Breathing out.
[1:19:31] Sitting here and now.
[1:19:41] Breathing in. and feeling the whole
[1:19:44] body.
[1:19:54] Breathing out, feeling the whole body.
[1:20:01] Now we're going to try counting up
[1:20:03] breaths from 1 to 10
[1:20:07] to develop a more continuous
[1:20:09] concentration on the breathing.
[1:20:14] I'll do the counting for you. Just try
[1:20:16] to follow that with your
[1:20:19] breathing and concentration.
[1:20:24] So with the next expanding in breath,
[1:20:27] mentally count to one.
[1:20:33] Hold in the breath.
[1:20:38] And with the contracting out breath,
[1:20:41] also count to one. Feel the last bit of
[1:20:44] air go out.
[1:20:51] The next in breath two
[1:21:04] out breath two
[1:21:16] in Three
[1:21:30] out three.
[1:21:43] In four
[1:21:57] out
[1:22:10] in
[1:22:23] out. Five
[1:22:37] in six.
[1:22:50] out. Six
[1:23:04] in seven.
[1:23:19] out. Seven
[1:23:34] in a
[1:23:48] out
[1:24:01] in nine.
[1:24:15] out. N
[1:24:29] 10
[1:24:41] out.
[1:24:45] Follow that outreath down to the in.
[1:24:50] And let there be a longer pause
[1:24:55] and just let the breath come back in
[1:24:57] under its own power. Don't try to
[1:25:01] control it,
[1:25:04] but keep your attention focused there in
[1:25:07] the center of the body.
[1:25:12] Follow all the movements of the
[1:25:15] uncontrolled expanding and contracting.
[1:25:26] Just knowing when the breath is coming
[1:25:30] in
[1:25:35] and knowing when the breath is going
[1:25:39] out.
[1:25:43] You know it by feeling it.
[1:25:46] That alert awareness.
[1:25:52] Especially try to feel where the
[1:25:54] clothing rubs against the skin of your
[1:25:57] stomach,
[1:25:58] rib cage, your chest
[1:26:02] as it expands and contracts.
[1:26:07] Try
[1:26:11] to notice the brief pauses between the
[1:26:14] breaths.
[1:26:24] Just try to be like a scientist looking
[1:26:26] down through a microscope
[1:26:30] observing an experiment.
[1:26:35] In this case, the process of breathing.
[1:26:42] This breathing helps keep this body
[1:26:45] alive.
[1:26:48] Breathing in fresh oxygen on the inb
[1:26:51] breath.
[1:26:54] Expelling the old air on the out breath.
[1:27:20] To help stay focused, you can use these
[1:27:23] brief mental reminders.
[1:27:27] In. In.
[1:27:30] Sitting.
[1:27:36] Out.
[1:27:37] Out.
[1:27:39] Sitting.
[1:27:44] We're breathing in. Letting go of the
[1:27:46] past and future.
[1:27:53] Breathing out.
[1:27:56] sitting here and now
[1:28:04] breath by breath,
[1:28:08] moment by moment,
[1:28:19] letting go of your thoughts.
[1:28:24] Just let your thoughts come and go in
[1:28:26] the back of the mind.
[1:28:31] Keeping the breathing body in the front
[1:28:35] of the awareness.
[1:28:42] In. In. Sitting.
[1:28:50] Out. Out. Sitting.
[1:29:04] This breathing process is going in and
[1:29:06] out.
[1:29:11] This larger sitting body
[1:29:49] Being alert for thoughts trying to sneak
[1:29:52] into the mind,
[1:29:54] steal your attention away.
[1:30:07] Just keep turning up the power of the
[1:30:09] mental microscope
[1:30:13] to notice more detailed sensations
[1:30:16] of the breathing process.
[1:30:28] Try to notice how each breath is
[1:30:30] different.
[1:30:33] Sometimes it's longer,
[1:30:37] sometimes it's shorter.
[1:30:43] Sometimes you feel the breathing in more
[1:30:45] in the abdomen or stomach area.
[1:30:48] Sometimes you feel it more in middle or
[1:30:51] upper chest.
[1:30:55] It's always changing.
[1:31:05] The pauses between the breaths may be
[1:31:07] longer or shorter.
[1:31:21] It's called mindfulness of breathing.
[1:31:47] So many different little sensations of
[1:31:49] the breathing can be noticed.
[1:32:03] Brief pauses between the breath.
[1:33:18] Even while feeling the breathing
[1:33:20] process, you can notice other little
[1:33:22] sensations coming and going
[1:33:26] in or around the body.
[1:33:31] Itchy or prickly sensations,
[1:33:36] tingling sensations,
[1:33:41] clothing touching the skin.
[1:33:45] There is some extra pain
[1:33:50] just coming and going
[1:33:56] in and through that breathing awareness.
[1:34:05] Breathing in, feeling the whole body.
[1:34:16] Breathing out, feeling the whole body.
[1:34:26] The more sensations you can feel, the
[1:34:29] less chance for your mind to get lost,
[1:34:33] carried away in thoughts.
[1:35:00] If you can't [clears throat] feel the
[1:35:01] breathing easy
[1:35:03] then take some deeper slower deeper
[1:35:08] breaths.
[1:35:11] Feels
[1:35:13] keep the mind centered in the body.
[1:36:19] You catch the mind lost in thoughts.
[1:36:22] Recognize it as lost. Lost.
[1:36:26] Take a deep slow breath. Bring the mind
[1:36:29] back into the body.
[1:36:34] Back to in. In.
[1:36:37] Sitting
[1:36:42] out.
[1:36:44] Out.
[1:36:46] Sitting.
[1:36:50] Breathing in. Letting go of the past and
[1:36:54] future.
[1:36:59] Breathing out.
[1:37:02] Sitting here and now.
[1:37:19] Just turning up the power of the mental
[1:37:22] microscope
[1:37:25] to notice more subtler sensations.
[1:39:28] Just opening up to the flow of
[1:39:31] impermanence.
[1:39:34] Notice more and more sensations
[1:39:41] coming and going.
[1:39:43] Noticing the subtle thoughts
[1:39:46] coming and going through the back of the
[1:39:48] mind.
[1:39:53] Hearing any sounds may be going on
[1:39:57] your
[1:40:20] If you know what the five aggregates
[1:40:22] are, try to recognize as
[1:40:26] aggregates.
[1:40:28] They appear in the mind.
[1:40:32] Material vibrations,
[1:40:34] pleasant or painful sensations,
[1:40:40] perceptions, mental recognitions,
[1:40:46] thoughts, urgence.
[1:40:52] Any thoughts of I, me, or mine?
[1:40:58] Ego consciousness.
[1:45:08] You [clears throat] have a good sense of
[1:45:10] things just arising and vanishing,
[1:45:13] coming and going
[1:45:16] with any without any reactions.
[1:45:23] Just imagine this being an empty house
[1:45:29] with nobody home
[1:45:34] to answer the call, knocking on the
[1:45:37] doors and windows.
[1:45:44] But there's a sensitive microphone in
[1:45:47] the house
[1:45:49] that knows
[1:45:53] but doesn't know.
[1:46:00] Cannot react.
[1:46:05] Sensitive microphone of awareness.
[1:46:14] The natural body centered present moment
[1:46:18] awareness.
[1:48:04] We let the awareness expand
[1:48:09] further outwards
[1:48:12] beyond the house.
[1:48:16] Let even the edges of the body idea of a
[1:48:20] house
[1:48:22] melt away.
[1:48:41] There's still any sense of self for me
[1:48:43] there in the consciousness.
[1:48:47] That little last remnant of the ice cube
[1:48:52] of the ego
[1:48:56] melt away
[1:49:02] through that vast expanse of awareness.
[1:57:13] Sarat.
[1:57:23] Samosity.
[1:57:49] Alternate bind.
[1:58:05] [singing]
[1:58:10] All conditioned things, the five
[1:58:13] aggregates of this body, mind and world
[1:58:17] are impermanent thing.
[1:58:21] And all impermanent things have tightly
[1:58:24] clung to with ignorance bring suffering.
[1:58:30] And all dhamas, all the five aggregates
[1:58:33] are of empty of any inherent self
[1:58:37] nature.
[1:58:41] When one understands these three
[1:58:44] characteristics with the eye of wisdom,
[1:58:49] one becomes disenchanted
[1:58:52] with self-created suffering.
[1:58:57] This is the path
[1:58:59] to freedom.
[1:59:03] and thus spoke
[1:59:07] the Buddha.
[1:59:16] And I invite you to
[1:59:19] end this meditation with chanting the
[1:59:22] word sadu three times slowly. We do that
[1:59:26] chanting on a long outreath to feel
[1:59:30] those vibrations in the body and mind.
[1:59:34] So take a deep breath.
[1:59:42] >> [snorts]
[1:59:42] >> So
[1:59:49] do
[1:59:57] breathe.
[2:00:02] So
[2:00:08] do
[2:00:16] breathe.
[2:00:21] I
[2:00:28] do.
[2:00:40] Now place the hands at the edge of your
[2:00:43] knees.
[2:00:45] Take one more deep breath. As you
[2:00:47] breathe in, stretch your head back.
[2:00:50] Pull the hands against the knees to arch
[2:00:53] your spine.
[2:00:56] Look up at the ceiling.
[2:00:59] Let out the breath.
[2:01:02] Breathe in. Lift the head up. And on an
[2:01:05] out breath, press [clears throat] the
[2:01:06] chin to the top of the chest
[2:01:10] to stretch the neck vertebrae.
[2:01:16] Lift the chin up level on an inb breath
[2:01:21] and relax on the outreath.
[2:01:25] Put a smile on your face.
[2:01:35] Okay friends.
[2:01:37] So this brings our
[2:01:39] dharma discussion
[2:01:42] meditation practice.
[2:01:46] to an end tonight and
[2:01:50] try to keep up your meditation practice
[2:01:52] during the week.
[2:01:54] If you can't do longer
[2:01:57] meditations every day or twice a day, at
[2:02:00] least try to do the M&M's in between,
[2:02:04] stopping every hour for one minute.
[2:02:08] Let go of that push to the future. Take
[2:02:11] a deep breath. Bring the mind to the
[2:02:15] body. Come back to just standing,
[2:02:18] breathing, standing, breathing.
[2:02:23] Send meta out in that one minute. If you
[2:02:26] had some negative thoughts toward
[2:02:28] anybody,
[2:02:30] forgive anybody if you thought they did
[2:02:34] something to you. So you don't keep it
[2:02:37] in your mind.
[2:02:40] Okay.
[2:02:42] So mindfulness a day keeps duka away
[2:02:47] and buddo
[2:02:52] >> knowing that beneath all of our you know
[2:02:55] thoughts and neurotic thoughts and
[2:02:58] fast-paced actions. There's always that
[2:03:01] parallel dimension of present moment
[2:03:05] calm silent present moment awareness.
[2:03:10] It's always begging us to pause and come
[2:03:13] back.
[2:03:16] Okay. So, till we meet again, be well,
[2:03:20] be safe, be mindful, be wise.
[2:03:24] >> Thank you, B.
[2:03:28] >> You're welcome.
[2:03:30] >> Thank you, B. And if you're in the
[2:03:32] vicinity this Saturday night, Halloween
[2:03:34] night, we're having a bonfire here with
[2:03:37] low
[2:03:38] >> and you're welcome to come by. We're
[2:03:40] going to start we're going to have an
[2:03:42] evening meditation from 5 to 6 and light
[2:03:45] the bonfire about 6 just after 6:00 and
[2:03:49] and uh
[2:03:52] so
[2:03:55] doing.
