[0:03] hey
[0:03] welcome everyone to integral yoga
[0:06] podcast
[0:07] uh today i'm joined by reverend kamala
[0:10] hayward
[0:11] um first uh before i introduce reverend
[0:14] kamala
[0:16] i just want to say a few words about
[0:18] integral yoga
[0:19] uh in case you're new to intramural yoga
[0:21] nintendo yoga
[0:23] very briefly is is seeing
[0:27] yoga as being something larger than
[0:30] than simply a physical practice uh hatha
[0:33] yoga practice
[0:35] it's really a system which integrates
[0:38] uh all aspects of our lives into
[0:43] a framework of yoga okay so it's
[0:46] it's really everything i'm doing is yoga
[0:50] whether i'm washing the dishes or
[0:51] speaking to a friend um it's it's
[0:55] viewing life through that lens um so
[0:58] just wanted to give that that overview
[0:59] and
[1:00] my perspective a little bit on what
[1:02] integral yoga uh
[1:03] means to me and uh
[1:06] yeah now i'd like to introduce our guest
[1:09] today
[1:10] reverend kamala so happy excited to have
[1:13] you here
[1:14] uh a little bit about you uh reverend
[1:17] kamala is an integral yoga teacher
[1:19] yoga therapist an intrical yoga minister
[1:23] currently sits on the board of integral
[1:24] yoga institute at san francisco
[1:26] uh she's a former lawyer
[1:30] uh very active in social justice
[1:33] uh movements
[1:37] and and yeah anything else that you'd
[1:39] like to share about yourself kamala
[1:41] thank you thank you so much for that and
[1:43] and i'm so happy to be here as well
[1:45] um yeah all that is uh is what a big
[1:49] part of what i do
[1:50] i've also been coaching individuals to
[1:53] begin
[1:54] like you've talked about integral yoga
[1:55] being woven into every aspect of life to
[1:58] help
[1:58] other people do that in their own lives
[2:02] maybe directly by speaking about yoga
[2:04] and
[2:05] and other times indirectly but really
[2:08] about
[2:08] cultivating that yoga experience in
[2:11] every moment of
[2:12] life so that you can really begin
[2:14] showing up more fully for life and for
[2:16] everything
[2:17] that you do so that's also a big piece
[2:19] of what i've been doing that kind of
[2:20] coaching and
[2:21] leadership
[2:24] how long have you been doing that
[2:26] individual coaching
[2:27] i've been doing that for about 10 years
[2:29] now
[2:31] [Music]
[2:32] yeah and i'm really really enjoying it
[2:34] it's been very very powerful and
[2:36] exciting
[2:36] to bring these ideas of yoga to people
[2:38] who maybe wouldn't traditionally think
[2:40] of themselves
[2:41] as yogis so i've been having a lot of a
[2:45] lot of fun and
[2:46] satisfaction with that have you found it
[2:49] to be
[2:49] effective for them as they incorporate
[2:51] yoga into their lives especially for
[2:53] people that
[2:54] uh maybe would not have considered
[2:55] themselves to be a yogi before
[2:58] absolutely absolutely because the
[3:00] teachings of yoga truly are
[3:02] about finding that peace that's within
[3:05] each of us that peace that's
[3:07] our birthright um you know you hear
[3:10] people talk about that peace which
[3:11] which surpasses all understanding it's
[3:14] that level of peace
[3:15] and people when they when they're able
[3:18] to touch
[3:18] into that people are deeply moved and it
[3:20] can be have a really powerful
[3:22] impact on people because yoga doesn't
[3:24] have to look like you know sweating on a
[3:27] mat
[3:27] as as you know from integral yoga and i
[3:29] think that that's
[3:30] a common misperception about yoga so
[3:33] when they see that they can take these
[3:34] teachings and
[3:35] and apply them to how they breathe how
[3:38] they sit how they interact and relate
[3:40] with
[3:40] others it's very very powerful whether
[3:43] you name it yoga or not
[3:45] right i want to ask you about
[3:48] uh your experience as a lawyer which i
[3:51] think you
[3:51] maybe your life around 13 years or so
[3:53] i'm not sure if you're
[3:54] you're still practicing um but you've
[3:57] mentioned
[3:57] that you experienced
[4:01] a kind of a spiritual awakening of sorts
[4:03] or
[4:04] some some sort of kind of deep spiritual
[4:06] experience that happened to you that
[4:07] maybe
[4:08] redirected your life in in a different
[4:11] direction
[4:12] uh can you share a little bit more of of
[4:15] what happened there
[4:16] yeah absolutely yes i had been
[4:19] practicing law for about 13 years
[4:21] i was primarily in you know public
[4:24] interest
[4:25] policy making settings so i loved what i
[4:28] was doing i
[4:29] deeply believed in what i was doing
[4:32] and that was what made law a really
[4:34] rewarding career for me personally
[4:37] um and at around the 13-year mark
[4:40] i hit some really uh challenging
[4:44] personal milestones um you know i
[4:47] i lost a family member i lost a
[4:49] significant relationship
[4:51] things really just started shaking up
[4:53] underneath me
[4:54] and i was a little bit confused i
[4:57] i mean i don't know that i i saw it as
[4:59] confusion at the time but looking back
[5:01] now i think i was confused because
[5:03] i felt like i was doing everything right
[5:05] i did all the right things i had the
[5:07] good life i had the good job i had the
[5:09] good career
[5:10] and i couldn't understand why was i
[5:14] um experience so much so much pain so
[5:16] much pain
[5:17] and unhappiness and um and i i just i
[5:21] needed to
[5:21] explore what was going on there because
[5:23] i realized what i thought
[5:25] was the path to happiness wasn't
[5:28] um and it really turned into a a large
[5:32] spiritual awakening that i wasn't
[5:33] expecting
[5:34] i didn't think that that's what would
[5:35] happen but that is what happened and it
[5:37] really really changed the course of my
[5:40] um my my life i was going to say my
[5:42] career but really of my life
[5:48] i i find the subject very interesting
[5:51] and it feels important to me
[5:53] because i think many of us uh experience
[5:57] uh something that's somewhat similar
[6:00] right that
[6:01] that maybe when we're children that we
[6:03] develop a dream or
[6:04] we're told you know if you follow this
[6:06] certain path
[6:08] you know it's gonna uh it's gonna
[6:10] fulfill you it's gonna make you
[6:12] happy you know study hard in school get
[6:13] the degree get a good job like you
[6:15] mentioned
[6:16] and and then you're gonna attain uh
[6:19] this uh great sense of uh you know joy
[6:24] and and so many people do all of those
[6:27] things
[6:27] um and then still find that there's a
[6:31] sort of
[6:31] emptiness or or lacking that's
[6:36] quite confusing i think
[6:39] what do you what do you make of that
[6:42] yeah
[6:43] you know it is it's confusing and and
[6:46] this it can be very disorienting right
[6:48] because you really had this idea that
[6:49] this is the direction i'm going and this
[6:51] is going to be the way to fulfillment or
[6:54] to happiness or to joy
[6:56] and you know i think what a lot of that
[6:58] is based on is this idea that
[7:01] what makes us happy is outside of us
[7:04] right what makes us happy is
[7:05] getting is getting the achievements
[7:07] getting the accomplishments getting the
[7:09] kudos i got all of that
[7:11] right and i thought that would make me
[7:13] happy and i think there's even a deeper
[7:15] confusion because it
[7:17] it feels like it's making you happy at
[7:19] times right it feels really good to get
[7:21] that pat on the back and the thumbs up
[7:22] and the way to go
[7:24] but after a while you start realizing
[7:26] like this isn't
[7:27] enough and this isn't satisfying
[7:30] this alone isn't satisfying to me you
[7:33] know and i think
[7:34] money is a big part of that too right
[7:36] like if i make enough
[7:37] money then i'll be happy right and it's
[7:39] just looking outside of ourselves
[7:42] for for that satisfaction and that joy
[7:45] and eventually
[7:46] i believe we all reach a point where we
[7:49] realize
[7:50] it's not enough right and either through
[7:54] tremendous success or tremendous loss i
[7:56] think
[7:57] on both you know they're from either
[7:59] extreme all the way through the entire
[8:00] range of that
[8:01] i think you hit a point where you say
[8:04] this this
[8:04] isn't enough that i'm not happy from
[8:07] this
[8:09] and um and and and so i think that
[8:12] that's where the teachings of yoga
[8:13] can be really useful because yoga points
[8:15] us back to ourselves
[8:17] for that happiness for that joy um
[8:20] but that's that's why i think we all hit
[8:21] that because we're all kind of looking
[8:23] outside of ourselves
[8:28] and does this maybe have something to do
[8:31] uh
[8:32] with even the the title that we chose
[8:34] you know creating a just world
[8:36] does this internal individual personal
[8:40] experience
[8:43] have to do with with creating a
[8:46] different
[8:46] a different type of culture different
[8:48] type of world
[8:50] yeah i really i really think it does and
[8:54] and i love
[8:55] speaking to spiritual communities about
[8:58] these kinds of issues around creating a
[8:59] just world around social justice around
[9:02] racial justice because i think
[9:04] kind of the extreme of looking outside
[9:06] of ourselves for happiness
[9:07] is then now just looking with looking
[9:10] within right and recognizing our
[9:12] interconnectedness with all beings
[9:14] and then kind of only looking at that
[9:17] and then denying the external reality
[9:19] right so there's like this kind of
[9:20] extreme like there's only the external
[9:22] and that's not going to make us happy
[9:25] and then we can swim all the way to the
[9:26] other way there's only the internal
[9:28] there's only the spiritual
[9:30] that's all that matters and i think that
[9:33] that creates a real
[9:34] unhappiness and dissatisfaction in
[9:36] itself but i think it
[9:38] also disrupts social communities
[9:42] um or people who are in that space their
[9:45] their
[9:45] understanding of this external world
[9:48] that also
[9:50] i believe we're embodied so that we can
[9:53] impact that as well right so we're not
[9:56] just the spiritual being but we're also
[9:58] not just this
[9:59] kind of material you know this physical
[10:02] being
[10:02] as well either right so finding that
[10:04] balance
[10:08] and is it possible that as we
[10:11] kind of engage the external world and
[10:14] maybe
[10:14] directly um along the lines of of
[10:17] bringing justice
[10:18] you know seeing injustice and then
[10:21] taking action
[10:22] to uh improve things
[10:27] is that in itself can it be seen as a
[10:30] a part of the spiritual practice right
[10:33] and
[10:34] and and will that even change the way
[10:36] that
[10:37] that we engage it so that this is not
[10:38] something separate from
[10:41] my kind of internal spiritual work i'm
[10:43] i'm compelled
[10:45] to take action because it feels right
[10:48] for me to do that
[10:52] i absolutely i think so i see it as part
[10:55] of
[10:55] a spiritual practice and spiritual work
[10:58] i mean
[10:59] when we talk about you know i love what
[11:01] you said about integral you're going to
[11:02] keep
[11:03] point going back to that because when
[11:05] you talked about you know even doing the
[11:06] dishes can be yoga
[11:08] doing the dishes can be yoga but doing
[11:09] the dishes could also not be yoga
[11:11] right right so
[11:15] so how do we bring that spirit into
[11:19] what we do even when it doesn't look
[11:22] like it's spiritual
[11:23] right like doing the dishes might not
[11:25] look spiritual
[11:26] from the outside but you know
[11:29] what's moving you to wash that dish you
[11:31] know that you're in this moment with
[11:34] that dish
[11:35] right you know you're having an
[11:37] experience of washing a dish without
[11:39] thinking about
[11:40] um you know certainly you want the dish
[11:42] to be clean
[11:43] that's why you're washing it right but
[11:45] you're not you're not
[11:47] attached to that you're not looking to
[11:49] that outcome specifically in that moment
[11:50] you're
[11:51] with the dish right and it's a silly
[11:54] example but
[11:55] i really think that social justice work
[11:57] can be accomplished in that same way
[11:59] right we can
[12:00] be on the front lines we can even be
[12:03] shouting
[12:03] at the front lines right but are we also
[12:06] connected to
[12:08] the that which connects all of us right
[12:10] and that doesn't mean
[12:11] that because we're connected it doesn't
[12:13] mean that everything is perfect and so
[12:15] just
[12:16] don't do anything i think that's that's
[12:18] kind of the mistake i was pointing to
[12:20] before
[12:21] but it's can i bring that understanding
[12:24] into what i'm doing
[12:25] as i'm doing it and that includes
[12:28] creating
[12:29] a world that is just
[12:32] right i was looking for other words but
[12:33] really i think just is a beautiful word
[12:35] i think we
[12:36] picked that word intentionally but
[12:38] moving toward a world that is just
[12:40] taking those actions to create
[12:42] a world that is just from a place of
[12:45] connection
[12:46] and interconnectedness
[12:49] and i think also to your point one
[12:51] that's process
[12:53] uh has a focus on the actual process of
[12:55] it as opposed to
[12:57] outcome oriented because especially
[12:59] along these lines of bringing
[13:01] you know justice you know i personally
[13:04] feel you know it's never gonna end
[13:05] right like we're not trying to get to a
[13:07] place
[13:08] um where okay it's a utopia we
[13:11] we cleaned it all up everything's great
[13:14] that's not gonna happen
[13:15] right it's it's never ending so
[13:18] therefore to get
[13:19] to get clear on that you know is that
[13:22] important that i'm
[13:23] engaging this process for this process
[13:26] alone and that's enough it's not about
[13:28] the outcome
[13:30] absolutely absolutely i believe that
[13:32] what we're doing
[13:34] as we engage in social justice efforts
[13:37] particularly as
[13:38] people who are connected to their
[13:39] spiritual practice but really anybody
[13:42] what we're doing is we're setting
[13:43] direction we're just setting a course
[13:46] right for our action rather than
[13:50] trying to get to this destination that i
[13:52] think you're right we may never get to
[13:54] right i certainly don't think we'll get
[13:56] to any kind of utopia in my lifetime
[13:59] um but setting the direction right
[14:01] that's more that that's what we're doing
[14:03] that's what we're doing is setting the
[14:04] direction
[14:12] i wanted to ask you about meditation
[14:14] specifically
[14:16] and its role in the quest for social
[14:18] justice
[14:20] um
[14:23] yeah how do you see meditation practice
[14:27] being related to this movement this
[14:30] cause
[14:31] yeah i think it's it's a powerful
[14:35] powerful practice specifically for this
[14:38] cause
[14:39] so i i think that um
[14:42] maybe i'm gonna start by talking a
[14:44] little bit about what i think meditation
[14:46] is not um i i believe that
[14:50] people often come to meditation and find
[14:52] meditation i know i myself
[14:54] came to meditation believing that
[14:57] meditation was
[14:58] if i if i did it right for long enough
[15:02] eventually
[15:03] meditation would alleviate all of my
[15:06] pain and suffering
[15:07] that basically i would just i would be
[15:09] at peace and
[15:10] be happy i meditated long enough or if i
[15:13] meditated right
[15:14] then i would be happy and at peace you
[15:16] know my mind would be quiet
[15:19] um there would be no thoughts uh there
[15:22] would be just this feeling of
[15:23] overwhelming bliss and joy
[15:25] and that that would never never end that
[15:28] that's what meditation would look like
[15:30] if i did it right
[15:32] and and i think that's a real mistake i
[15:35] think that's a real mistake and i think
[15:37] that that
[15:37] can derail people from their meditation
[15:39] practice and can even
[15:41] keep people from starting to meditate
[15:43] right because they say oh i can't
[15:44] quiet my mind i can't meditate i'm not
[15:46] even gonna try
[15:48] what i see meditation as is an
[15:51] opportunity
[15:52] to experience being these
[15:55] embodied creatures that we are to see
[15:58] the thoughts that come and go right so i
[16:01] think it's very easy for us to just kind
[16:03] of get
[16:03] lost in our thoughts we don't even
[16:05] recognize them as thoughts we're just
[16:06] kind of
[16:07] kind of going through life and the
[16:10] thoughts are at the background just kind
[16:12] of controlling us
[16:13] so meditation is an opportunity to pause
[16:16] and i'm just using thoughts as an
[16:18] example but there are physical
[16:19] sensations there are other sensations as
[16:22] well
[16:23] but meditation is an opportunity for us
[16:25] to pause
[16:26] and see those things to see what it
[16:29] means to be
[16:30] in a body to see what it means to be
[16:32] this person in this body
[16:35] right without getting identifying with
[16:38] it without
[16:39] letting it control us and so that's the
[16:42] gift that meditation brings it's an
[16:44] opportunity to really see what it means
[16:47] to be alive and when
[16:51] it comes to the practice of social
[16:53] justice especially for
[16:54] for people who have a meditation
[16:56] practice who you know who want to
[16:58] bring meditation to this meditation is a
[17:01] tremendous gift to be able to notice
[17:04] what's happening as we are at the front
[17:06] lines right i
[17:07] you know i gave a talk on responding to
[17:09] racism
[17:11] from a spiritual perspective and i
[17:12] talked and a lot of my talk was geared
[17:14] toward white people who maybe
[17:16] hadn't been active in anti-racist
[17:20] movements
[17:21] and i said you know you're gonna you're
[17:23] gonna
[17:24] maybe step up and step in and if you
[17:26] choose to do so
[17:27] you're gonna make mistakes right that
[17:29] was a big a big point that i really
[17:31] wanted to
[17:32] leave folks with is that they were going
[17:34] to make mistakes
[17:35] and that those mistakes were going to be
[17:37] very uncomfortable
[17:38] and sometimes maybe very very painful
[17:41] and meditation
[17:42] would allow someone to see that and not
[17:46] let that
[17:46] control them because if they let that
[17:48] discomfort or that pain control them
[17:50] they're very likely going to stop acting
[17:53] they're like i don't like this this is
[17:54] terrible
[17:55] i don't want to do this anymore this is
[17:58] just no fun for me
[17:59] right or whatever the thought process
[18:01] might be
[18:02] but with meditation they can say they
[18:04] can say all that they could say i don't
[18:06] like this this is
[18:07] terrible and then they can say oh look
[18:09] at that thought
[18:10] look at these feelings i don't like this
[18:12] oh look i don't like this right
[18:14] there's like an analysis and an
[18:16] observation that can occur
[18:18] that can then allow them to from a place
[18:22] of
[18:23] rather than reacting but from a place of
[18:25] wise response
[18:27] decide what their next action is going
[18:29] to be are they going to keep going
[18:32] right so that's meditation yes
[18:37] i think what you're what you're really
[18:39] talking about here is yoga to me in a
[18:41] very big way like this is is yoga
[18:44] in a way i would i would translate it um
[18:47] to saying
[18:48] that you know the process of not taking
[18:51] myself so seriously
[18:56] hey so it's just it's just being able to
[18:58] observe and you know i kind of wonder at
[19:00] this sometimes like
[19:02] how we we ended up being so
[19:05] attached to who we are
[19:10] you know how we're seen um
[19:13] as opposed to i'm just this human being
[19:17] having this experience okay and let me
[19:20] try to understand it
[19:22] let me understand you know my tendencies
[19:25] my conditioning
[19:26] what's happening and let me share it
[19:29] with other people and and not be afraid
[19:31] to do it as opposed to
[19:32] you know feeling like i'm going to be
[19:35] judged
[19:36] you know in this this process of of of
[19:38] choosing i like this person i don't like
[19:40] that person and
[19:42] it feels like such a way of life
[19:46] to just be doing that all the time and
[19:49] it totally exhausted me which i think is
[19:51] one of the things
[19:52] that that directed me towards towards
[19:55] yoga
[19:56] i just didn't want to do that anymore
[20:00] and it makes me think too of just like
[20:02] open spaces
[20:03] for being able to have discussions
[20:07] and how important you know that is for
[20:10] people
[20:10] you know even you know as an example to
[20:12] say
[20:13] um you know oh when i was
[20:17] when i was younger you know i wanted to
[20:19] go out with
[20:20] you know uh this person that's a
[20:22] different color
[20:23] color than me and my parents
[20:26] my family reacted um
[20:30] really strongly and so how could you do
[20:32] that you know
[20:33] and and to share that and to see well
[20:36] what what is the effect of that going to
[20:38] be
[20:39] you know having gone through that
[20:40] experience where my family or the people
[20:42] i trusted
[20:43] reacted in that way how is that going to
[20:45] condition me
[20:47] and color my lens to start to see people
[20:50] you know in in a different way so i
[20:52] don't know like i
[20:53] i don't know how you feel about this but
[20:54] i would just love to see the creation of
[20:57] more
[20:58] safe spaces for for dialogue to happen
[21:01] and so that we can unpack our
[21:03] conditioning
[21:05] yeah yeah absolutely i would love to see
[21:08] that too and
[21:09] and i i think that for
[21:12] for so long there's been um
[21:15] kind of this like denial about
[21:19] you know about our conditioning right
[21:21] people
[21:22] you know you can if you were to call
[21:24] someone a racist
[21:26] and not everybody but a lot of people if
[21:28] you were to call them a racist
[21:29] they would get so defensive they would
[21:32] be unable to hear
[21:34] anything you basically said after that
[21:36] point
[21:38] and and i and i would like those open
[21:41] spaces because i think that we're
[21:44] all we're all impacted by this society
[21:47] in which
[21:48] racism pervades everything i mean we
[21:51] can't
[21:52] be untouched by that if we live in this
[21:54] society we can't be untouched by that
[21:56] so i would want people to be able to
[21:59] rather than get defensive to a statement
[22:01] like that
[22:02] to say to be able to say like
[22:06] hmm let me think about that you know
[22:08] like my impulses i don't agree with you
[22:11] but
[22:11] let me think about that right rather
[22:13] than immediately putting up those walls
[22:16] and
[22:17] and i think that safe these kinds of
[22:19] safe spaces you're talking about
[22:21] could allow for that right could allow
[22:23] for that a little bit more
[22:24] and that could also help to kind of
[22:28] shift the burden of who is who
[22:31] is kind of doing the educating and who
[22:33] is doing the explaining
[22:34] a little bit in a way that that is
[22:38] more easeful for everybody right like
[22:41] you know a lot of people of color
[22:43] are or you know i've heard from a lot of
[22:46] my friends anecdotally
[22:47] are being approached by people who are
[22:50] kind of
[22:51] like wow i can't believe racism is as
[22:53] bad as
[22:54] as all this and they're you know you
[22:57] know oftentimes white people and then
[22:58] they're approaching their friends of
[22:59] color and saying
[23:00] you know talk to me about this like i
[23:02] had no idea and a lot of people of color
[23:05] are like
[23:05] i like i don't want to talk to you about
[23:08] it like
[23:09] you know maybe there's somewhere else
[23:10] you can educate yourself like for me
[23:12] this has been my lived experience for a
[23:14] lot of years and i'm really tired
[23:16] i'm tired of talking about it and it can
[23:19] be even painful
[23:20] to say like to hear that like oh my gosh
[23:22] this has been like
[23:23] my primary experience of life
[23:26] and you are coming to me and saying you
[23:28] never even thought about it you know
[23:30] that can be challenging right so
[23:33] creating these safe spaces in ways that
[23:36] that are safe for everybody basically
[23:37] for the people who are in the room and
[23:39] also for the people who are not in the
[23:40] room you know safe for them as well
[23:42] but i i love the idea of promoting this
[23:45] dialogue because i think that that is
[23:46] what's going to get
[23:47] us to really begin unpacking like you
[23:50] said the conditioning we may have
[23:51] received that we don't
[23:52] we're not even aware of hmm
[23:56] yeah that's uh i think an important
[24:00] point
[24:01] too to to even be aware of the those
[24:04] that don't want to have the
[24:05] conversations
[24:06] and maybe to ask first you know that
[24:10] even consent culture i think is such a
[24:13] big
[24:14] thing just like check in with you do you
[24:16] want to have this conversation do you
[24:18] want
[24:19] maybe a little bit uncomfortable but to
[24:22] just to make sure
[24:24] that someone is okay with whatever we're
[24:26] about to do
[24:27] before we do it
[24:31] um i also want to ask about the
[24:34] the tendency to to point the finger
[24:38] because uh this is another huge lesson
[24:40] that
[24:41] uh i've i've learned uh through yoga
[24:44] that's maybe been the hardest one for me
[24:47] uh and you know swami satyananda one of
[24:50] my favorite things that he
[24:51] he says is you know when you point the
[24:53] finger you know he holds up his hands
[24:55] you know and uh and he says you know
[24:58] three fingers are pointing back at you
[25:00] you know and then
[25:01] the thumb facing upward is you know the
[25:03] witness
[25:04] the god watching everything happen but
[25:07] you know i
[25:07] really feel deeply and i'm interested in
[25:11] your experience
[25:12] too that that this is a major trap
[25:15] and a tendency and i think because it's
[25:18] so easy
[25:19] to spend our time saying
[25:22] you know again it's out there someone
[25:25] else
[25:25] is is doing something they're the
[25:28] problem
[25:28] right and all the time i'm taking my
[25:31] opinion
[25:32] uh this is right and that's wrong and
[25:34] ins and and
[25:36] and to me this is all a distraction from
[25:38] doing the actual internal work
[25:40] in terms of looking looking into myself
[25:43] and
[25:44] and on a very practical level like
[25:45] that's what i can control right i can't
[25:47] control all these people doing these
[25:48] things but i
[25:49] i can control to a certain extent
[25:52] my own tendencies and my own growth
[25:55] so anything to share about kind of this
[25:57] process of maybe shifting from
[26:00] looking and judging everything
[26:02] externally
[26:03] um to instead turning inward
[26:09] yeah yeah i love that question
[26:11] absolutely because
[26:13] you know we see the world through our
[26:15] own lens
[26:17] so what we see is
[26:20] directly impacted by us by ourselves
[26:24] right so i do think it's essential that
[26:27] as we move through the world
[26:28] we do always look within and recognize
[26:32] that we're seeing everything through
[26:34] this lens
[26:35] right and that you know to me doesn't
[26:37] mean kind of again
[26:39] it doesn't mean you know don't look
[26:42] without at all
[26:43] because it's all in here right i still
[26:45] believe that
[26:47] being embodied we're here in these
[26:50] bodies
[26:51] i think as an invitation to impact
[26:54] our external world but to also recognize
[26:57] that we're bringing ourselves to it and
[26:59] that alone
[27:00] impacts what we're experiencing
[27:04] so i think that there's that balance
[27:06] right and and i think like to me like
[27:07] that finger
[27:08] is really about um
[27:12] a lot of it i see it as like who's like
[27:15] wrong it's blame who's the bad guy here
[27:19] or the bad
[27:20] person here right i don't think excuse
[27:22] me i don't think that
[27:23] that is helpful right i don't think that
[27:26] that's helpful
[27:27] but really more just moving toward
[27:31] a place of peace without this idea like
[27:33] again setting just setting the direction
[27:35] right
[27:36] without the idea that my ways the right
[27:39] way in your ways the wrong way but just
[27:41] being aware of what direction do we wish
[27:43] to set
[27:44] you know our lives the world ourselves
[27:46] and and work toward that
[27:50] one thing you just said uh i feel is
[27:52] really important
[27:53] uh kind of the byproduct of doing
[27:57] uh the internal work right so it isn't
[28:01] this which i think a tendency that
[28:04] happens quite often of of
[28:05] a shutting out and ignoring what's
[28:08] happening in the external world
[28:10] instead it's i'm doing this internal
[28:13] work
[28:14] you know maybe i'm getting clean i'm
[28:16] growing i'm learning about myself
[28:19] and then because of that work i'm able
[28:22] to then
[28:22] navigate the external world with uh
[28:26] much more grace i would say uh
[28:29] maturity than i would uh
[28:33] you know elsewise um so
[28:36] i don't know i just want to emphasize
[28:38] that um because
[28:39] you know that's what i find like that's
[28:41] that's the hope is that you know by
[28:43] doing this it has just a ripple effect
[28:46] you know yeah yeah i mean i love the
[28:50] um the integral yoga analogy that you
[28:53] know many of us are taught that our mind
[28:55] is this mirror
[28:56] that is just reflecting that that is
[28:59] just really
[29:00] we're reflecting the world on our mind
[29:04] and our mind is the mirror right and as
[29:06] we clean
[29:07] that mirror as we straighten that mirror
[29:09] as we polish that mirror
[29:10] we can see the world more clearly right
[29:13] and that's and what you're talking about
[29:14] is really pointing that
[29:15] pointing that you know yeah and what i
[29:17] love about that too is that it's like
[29:19] it's getting away from this idea that
[29:20] like phoniness is like a
[29:22] something that can be successful right
[29:24] like i can pretend
[29:26] and it's gonna and it's gonna serve me
[29:27] it's like no
[29:29] you you can pretend but it's it's it's
[29:31] not gonna
[29:32] be effective you might win you know
[29:34] little little small things that look
[29:36] like it's serving
[29:37] you well but there's no you know easy
[29:39] way around
[29:40] who you are is is like you said how
[29:43] clean your mirror is is going to be
[29:44] projected and that's
[29:46] just the way it's set up um that's right
[29:49] that's right and that phoniness is again
[29:53] it's really looking outside you're
[29:54] looking for the kudos you're looking for
[29:56] the
[29:57] the image you're still looking outside
[29:58] of yourself
[30:00] to find that happiness so it's never
[30:01] going to work
[30:06] i wanted to to ask you about um
[30:10] our own uh richness or
[30:14] privileges we could say um
[30:17] the process of kind of tuning in and
[30:18] saying wow
[30:20] i've been given a lot of gifts i've been
[30:22] given
[30:24] privileges i'm
[30:27] really fortunate in so many ways in my
[30:30] life
[30:31] that that that process seems to be
[30:35] really challenging there seems to be
[30:37] some kind of obstacles
[30:39] um between me and stepping into
[30:43] that place of actually feeling grateful
[30:45] for my life
[30:47] what what do you think those obstacles
[30:49] are
[30:51] yeah i love that you know um
[30:56] and there are a couple there are kind of
[30:57] a couple things i want to talk about
[30:59] there
[30:59] um when
[31:03] when we when we talk about privilege you
[31:05] know and i've been doing a lot of social
[31:07] justice work recently so i you know
[31:09] like kind of white privilege like came
[31:11] to my mind and
[31:12] you know and you're talking about a lot
[31:14] of things um but that was something that
[31:16] came
[31:16] up for me and i thought how when people
[31:19] are told
[31:20] they have white privilege sometimes they
[31:22] get really defensive like they don't
[31:25] they hear that as some kind of insult
[31:27] right or
[31:28] attack and and really all that's
[31:31] pointing to
[31:32] is this this level of
[31:35] power and access that they have that
[31:38] maybe people of color don't have
[31:40] and and so it came to my mind because
[31:43] what you're talking about also are
[31:44] things that maybe not everyone has you
[31:46] know
[31:47] we're we're privileged to you know like
[31:49] you said just all the riches and
[31:51] abundance and and so many of our lives
[31:53] it's uh it's hard for us to um
[31:56] acknowledge it it's hard for us to
[32:00] um embrace it
[32:03] it's hard for us to remember to be
[32:05] grateful for it you know there's so many
[32:07] kind of things that that get in the way
[32:10] of
[32:10] experiencing that privilege or
[32:12] exercising that privilege
[32:14] um but you're speaking specifically
[32:16] about being grateful for
[32:18] kind of the abundance and riches we have
[32:20] you know i think as long as we're
[32:22] focused outside
[32:25] you know we'll never have enough right
[32:28] we'll never have enough
[32:30] and so when we're looking outside and we
[32:33] never have enough
[32:34] it is very hard to be grateful for what
[32:36] we do have
[32:38] to stop and just and this is another
[32:40] gift of meditation right to just pause
[32:43] and really sit in the experience that
[32:45] you're having right now
[32:47] and then and and feel that seat
[32:51] beneath you right and now all of a
[32:53] sudden it's like oh i have a seat
[32:55] beneath me oh i have a seat that's
[32:57] supported by
[32:58] this floor that's in this gorgeous house
[33:00] right like
[33:01] there's so much here and and all that it
[33:04] provides for us
[33:06] um we can experience that with a
[33:08] practice of meditation we can we can
[33:10] see that i'm i'm keep going back to
[33:12] everything we just said like i'm like
[33:14] you clean the mirror you see what's true
[33:16] right you see what's real
[33:20] thank you for that
[33:26] on a personal level i just want to ask
[33:27] you um
[33:29] you know i think you've been pretty
[33:31] active right now
[33:32] uh for some time in in the movement
[33:35] um social justice how are you feeling
[33:39] as sometimes has progressed um
[33:43] are you feeling exhausted are you
[33:45] feeling a sense of purpose maybe that
[33:47] that wasn't there previously yeah i
[33:50] definitely am feeling a renewed sense of
[33:52] purpose it's been extremely
[33:54] powerful time for me personally um and
[33:58] i'm
[33:58] also feeling this
[34:01] this new kind of hope um
[34:05] i'm seeing people more more people
[34:08] more willing to listen you know and i
[34:11] i'm saying things that
[34:13] i know or that i've experienced
[34:17] being received really really differently
[34:18] like i've said the same thing you know
[34:21] six months ago a year ago 10 years ago
[34:23] 20 years ago
[34:25] excuse me and it was received so
[34:26] differently from how it's being received
[34:28] now and
[34:29] i'm really i i'm a little nervous to
[34:33] feel hopeful but i
[34:34] feel i feel i feel i feel a spark of
[34:37] hope there
[34:38] um and so there's you know i'm just i'm
[34:41] just going i'm
[34:41] on my path and i'm feeling like this is
[34:44] the right one for me
[34:49] yeah it's interesting with
[34:52] with hope um i'm glad that you're
[34:55] feeling hopeful
[34:56] first of all i think that's that's
[34:58] wonderful
[34:59] um i can't help but also feel
[35:03] a little a little concerned at the same
[35:06] time
[35:06] um because
[35:10] i'll bring up the point of the the the
[35:12] status quo
[35:14] the power of kind of uh social social
[35:17] pressure
[35:18] what is uh what is kind of
[35:21] hip and in right now which i think is
[35:25] a really really strong force
[35:28] right like everyone is saying that you
[35:30] know black lives matter right now and be
[35:32] a part of this movement
[35:34] um so therefore i'm gonna hop on this
[35:36] train
[35:37] and i'm gonna be a part of it too
[35:39] because i think i'll be accepted
[35:41] socially
[35:42] if i do that right it's like maybe
[35:44] filling this this real
[35:46] uh this place of insecurity that's
[35:48] always there that
[35:49] uh i i'm filling that place
[35:52] by doing what feels safe and right now
[35:55] that feels safe
[35:57] so my concern in a way is like when
[36:00] when things shift a little bit like you
[36:02] know what i mean like how how genuine is
[36:04] it
[36:05] or is it just the end thing to do right
[36:07] now
[36:09] yeah that's such a great question and i
[36:12] you know
[36:12] i know that the kind of the news cycle
[36:16] kind of pushes what they want to push
[36:17] and then they you know throw it aside
[36:19] and do the next big thing
[36:21] you know and i think that that's
[36:22] definitely true with social movements
[36:25] you know we've seen it time and time
[36:27] again and i think you're raising a
[36:28] really great point you know a lot of
[36:30] people are just
[36:31] doing what's kind of hip and cool right
[36:33] now and you know wearing the black lives
[36:36] matter t-shirt is like really hip and
[36:37] cool i bet they're sold out i don't know
[36:40] you know and i i think that's real i i
[36:43] do think that's real
[36:44] i also know that once you learn
[36:46] something you can't unlearn it
[36:49] so i'm hoping like and so i am doing as
[36:52] much as i can right now basically like i
[36:53] see a window
[36:54] it's kind of open and i'm trying to just
[36:56] ram myself through it as fast as i
[36:58] can right and so and then just
[37:02] and then let's go oh you know i don't
[37:04] know what's really going to happen but
[37:06] i'm just excited that this window is
[37:08] open right now
[37:10] um and i think that that's what that's
[37:12] what's what's giving me any kind of
[37:14] you know that's what my hope is based in
[37:18] i so appreciate that response
[37:21] thank you about at that time
[37:24] um finally uh reverend kamala
[37:28] uh i think is up for leading us in a
[37:31] short practice
[37:32] uh for a few minutes uh so i think that
[37:35] would be
[37:35] that would be great yeah great i would
[37:38] love to
[37:40] so just coming to this moment
[37:43] and we'll begin by coming to
[37:46] this physical experience the body
[37:48] however it is wherever it is in this
[37:51] moment
[37:52] just taking a moment to notice notice it
[37:55] notice
[37:57] those areas that are in contact with the
[37:59] surface beneath you
[38:02] noticing the air on the skin it can be
[38:05] helpful to maybe
[38:06] let the eyes close and allow the focus
[38:09] to begin
[38:10] turning more fully to the experience of
[38:13] this body
[38:15] in this moment
[38:20] noticing the breath as it moves into
[38:23] and out of the nose throat
[38:26] lungs torso
[38:33] just beginning to gather
[38:37] the attention to here
[38:41] and now
[38:50] if it's available or comfortable you can
[38:52] feel a gentle lengthening of the spine
[38:56] a gentle inner lift
[39:02] and also noticing if there is any
[39:05] tension
[39:07] that's within reach perhaps letting it
[39:10] unwind a little bit
[39:16] without judgment
[39:19] without labeling simply noticing
[39:33] and as you come into this moment you can
[39:36] mentally scan the length of the body
[39:38] perhaps from the
[39:40] feet to the head or the head to the feet
[39:47] noticing any areas
[39:51] perhaps areas calling out for your
[39:55] attention
[39:56] perhaps areas that have not had
[39:58] attention paid to them in a while
[40:01] notice what's there
[40:36] and gently shifting the awareness to the
[40:39] breath
[40:40] noticing the flow of the breath
[40:44] exactly as it is in this moment
[40:47] not needing to change or alter it in any
[40:51] way
[40:56] if it's helpful you can notice where you
[40:58] feel the breath
[40:59] most distinctly maybe it's in the rising
[41:03] and falling of the chest or abdomen
[41:10] or the movement of the air in the
[41:12] nostrils
[41:14] slightly cooler on the inhale
[41:18] slightly warmer on the exhale
[41:24] or perhaps it's the sound of the breath
[41:30] or something else whatever it is letting
[41:33] the attention rest
[41:34] there for a few moments
[41:39] you is the silent witness of the breath
[42:24] and now gently shifting the attention
[42:27] to the mind the thoughts in the mind
[42:34] see if you can observe the thoughts
[42:38] their content their emotional
[42:41] tone without getting
[42:45] caught up in them without even believing
[42:48] them
[42:50] noticing the thoughts as they move
[42:52] through the mind
[42:53] in the same way you may observe clouds
[42:56] moving through a vast sky
[43:01] witnessing the thoughts
[44:07] and then bringing the awareness to that
[44:10] which is underlying
[44:14] and permeating all holding
[44:18] all of us
[44:21] holding all of earth
[44:27] holding the entire universe
[44:31] that which connects each one of us
[44:36] to each other and to everything else
[44:42] feeling that interconnected wholeness
[44:45] that interconnected oneness
[44:48] with all
[44:58] not as a thought or as words but as an
[45:03] experience
[46:32] and with that experience of oneness
[46:39] with the remembering of that
[46:42] interconnectedness that we all share
[46:46] gently coming back to the breath
[46:57] back to the body
[46:59] [Music]
[47:06] begin gently opening the eyes
[47:09] at your own pace taking your time
[47:26] and if you'd like bringing the palms
[47:28] together in front of the heart
[47:33] and gently bowing to your own inner
[47:36] wisdom
[47:37] your inner light
[47:41] that wisdom that life that we all share
[48:05] thank you
[48:12] gosh talk about feeling grateful
