Alison David

Alison David, who calls herself a Musical Medicine Woman and Voice Activator, is a singer based in Brighton, England. Her work centres on helping people free their voices and express themselves. She says singing is her medicine, her hobby and her career.

Her career began on the road. After leaving university early, she busked a cappella and hitched her way towards Ibiza. In Barcelona, on La Ramblas, she found her first audience and learned she would never go hungry as long as she could sing. She went on to busk for five years, mostly on the London Underground. There she met Eddie Reader and Dave Stewart, who took her band into the studio and offered a record deal. Busking led to a job at London's Hippodrome and to her first band, Life's Addiction. She then had a ten-year recording career, working with Red Snapper, The Black Science Orchestra and Bugz In The Attic, as well as most of the major record labels.

Her signature song, Dreams Come True, was released by three labels in 2003, 2006 and 2010, each time as a remix of an original track that has still not had an official release. She describes it as a statement she chose to live by and defend. After becoming a mother she turned to singing covers at public and private events, with occasional collaborative releases. More recently she has recorded a jazz trio album, is writing an original album, and is collaborating with the band Mezzowave.

Today she also leads workshops and masterclasses on freeing the voice and true self-expression, and has led and sung at retreats in Italy and England. She hosts a monthly radio show, Love Transmission, on Code South radio. She has released the Mmmm album of songs, mantras and meditations, which she describes as tools she created to support herself and others. Her work now includes motivational speaking in the form of Keynote Concerts. She delivers her music with feeling, loves a wide repertoire of popular genres, and takes pride in dressing for a performance, with a particular love of sequins.
