Morning Affirmation Yoga: Building Confidence One Pose at a Time

Liza Colpa's 20-minute morning affirmation yoga is a gentle, floor-to-standing sequence built around one simple premise: the things you say to yourself while you move can shape how you meet the day. Posted to her YouTube channel in May 2020, the video walks a viewer from a supine twist through cat-cow, downward dog, lunges, plank, and a standing balance, pausing at each stage to repeat a short statement such as "I am enough" or "I am perfect just as I am." Its stated aim, in the video description, is to "build you up, as well as wake you up so that you approach you day ahead calm, confident and grounded." What makes it worth a closer look is the structure: the affirmations are not decoration laid over an ordinary stretch routine. They are anchored to specific shapes, so the body and the voice learn the same message together.

Where does a morning affirmation practice begin?

The flow opens on the floor, with no instruction to get up quickly. Colpa asks the practitioner to lie down, breathe, and place one hand on the belly and one on the heart. Then she offers a line to repeat: "I am enough." The breath is the rhythm for the phrase, inhale and exhale, with the words sitting inside the breath rather than competing with it. From there, she invites a short intention, "going off the theme of releasing insecurities self-doubt building trust and confidence in yourself knowing that you're exactly where you are meant to be on and off the yellow mat" (video, 2:25).

This is the first clue to how the practice is designed. The intention is set before any movement happens, so the morning starts from a stated direction rather than from the first thought that surfaces. Colpa describes the underlying idea in her own words early in the video: affirmations are "kind of positive self-talk instead of negative self-talk where I might say to myself no this is impossible no I can't do this" (video, 0:22). The practice, she says, is meant to help the practitioner "actually start the journey to begin with instead of just giving up before I actually start" (video, 0:51).

How do affirmations work when they are tied to poses?

Most affirmation content asks you to repeat a phrase while sitting still, perhaps in front of a mirror. The distinctive move here is the pairing. Each statement is attached to a posture, and the posture is what makes the words land in the body.

  • Supine twist and early floor work (0:00–4:00): The opening repeats "I am enough" and asks the practitioner to thank the body and then thank yourself as the knees move side to side.
  • Cat-cow and child's pose (4:12–5:00): Rolling through the spine and then resting in child's pose, the affirmation becomes "I'm exactly where I am meant to be."
  • Downward dog and heart opening (6:22): With the hands swept forward and up and then brought to the heart, the line is "I am lovable."
  • Plank and cobra (7:00–8:00): Holding plank for a few breaths, the practitioner hears "I am stronger than I realize," a phrase that returns in later rounds.
  • Low lunge and forward fold (9:00–10:30): The phrase "I am perfect just as I am" comes with an explicit allowance: "if you can't get your notes to go too far down that's okay."
  • Balance and squat (11:03–16:00): Here the line is "there's no such thing as failure," and the video is direct that falling out of the pose is part of the point.

The repetition is intentional. Colpa returns to "I am stronger than I realize" more than once and cycles through "I am lovable" in different shapes, so the phrases do not arrive as one-off messages. Repeated across a sequence, they begin to read as a set of commitments the body is practicing rather than a list of compliments.

Why does the balance pose carry the strongest message?

The standing balance is the sequence's emotional center. The practitioner brings the right foot to the left leg, placing the sole at the ankle, calf, or inner thigh and never on the knee, and brings the hands to prayer. Colpa's instruction at this point is the most explicit in the video: "if you fall that's perfect because the affirmation for this is there's no such thing as failure" (video, 11:03).

"If you fall that's perfect because the affirmation for this is there's no such thing as failure."

— Liza Colpa, in her morning affirmation yoga video (about 11:03)

Balance is a useful teacher for this kind of work because it makes the mind's reaction visible. A wobble produces a quick judgment, and the judgment is usually the kind of "no I can't do this" Colpa describes at the start. By telling the practitioner in advance that falling is fine, the video offers a small, physical rehearsal of responding to a stumble without turning it into a verdict on the self. The same logic runs through the later squat, where she asks the practitioner to stay strong, sit back through the heels, and find steadiness rather than perfect form.

What does the video's approach mean for someone who is already hard on themselves?

The description names the problem plainly: "We sometimes are too hard on ourselves and tear any ideas and dreams we have, before the day even begins." That observation is the spine of the whole flow. If self-criticism tends to arrive first thing, the sequence tries to get there first with a different voice.

The practice does not ask anyone to believe a statement they find untrue. Colpa's phrasing is gentle and repetitive rather than grand. "I am enough," "I am lovable," "I am stronger than I realize." The affirmations are simple enough to repeat through a breath, and the breath gives them a pace. Practitioners who find a full sentence hard to accept can still stay with the rhythm, which is the more realistic entry point.

It is also worth noting what the video does not claim. It does not promise a specific outcome, does not cite research, and does not present itself as a substitute for care from a professional when self-doubt is severe. It is a twenty-minute morning practice, offered as one way to begin a day with a steadier internal tone.

How do you practice this flow well?

A few practical details from the video are worth carrying into your own version:

  • Start at your own time. Colpa says the sequence is "meant to be done first thing in the morning but if you're getting to it later it will also work too" (video, 1:12).
  • Use the breath as the metronome. Each affirmation is paired with an inhale or exhale, so the words stay slow.
  • Let the pose set the size. Where the video suggests a blanket or towel for the forward fold, use one; the aim is to be comfortable enough to repeat the phrase.
  • Allow sound if it comes. In the lunge, she invites the practitioner to "add sound" while repeating the affirmation, which can be a useful way to let the words leave the head.
  • Close in stillness. The sequence ends in a seated or lying rest, and the final lines return to love and growth rather than to effort.

The strongest case for this kind of practice is its simplicity. It requires no special equipment, no prior flexibility, and no belief in any particular framework. It asks for twenty minutes, a mat, and a willingness to say something kind before the day starts pushing back.

Where to go from here

If the idea resonates, try the full video once at a slow pace, then write three affirmations of your own in the same spirit: short, repeatable, and rooted in something you can at least imagine being true. Pair each one with a pose you already know, such as child's pose or a standing balance, and repeat the phrase on the exhale. Liza Colpa's channel and website, along with her meditations on Insight Timer, offer more of her work for anyone who wants to continue with the same voice. Start small, expect some wobbles, and remember the video's own instruction: if you fall, that is part of the practice.

[0:00] hi my name is Lisa and this is a yoga

[0:03] sequence to promote self-confidence and

[0:05] release self-doubt so I love this

[0:16] sequence because I'm gonna start adding

[0:18] in affirmations into my sequence

[0:22] with a lot I have it on all my

[0:26] meditations on the insight timer which

[0:28] you can check out the link below and

[0:30] pretty much for me

[0:32] affirmations just are kind of positive

[0:36] self-talk instead of negative self-talk

[0:39] where I might say to myself no this is

[0:41] impossible no I can't do this I can

[0:43] begin to use the affirmations to

[0:44] actually talk myself up so that I let go

[0:47] of self doubt and defeatist mentality

[0:49] and actually start the journey to begin

[0:51] with instead of just giving up before I

[0:53] actually start so let's go ahead and

[0:56] start by lying on down

[1:01] [Music]

[9:23] on to fingertips gazing forward on an

[9:25] exhale go ahead and lean or send the

[9:35] slowly see if you can just be here in

[9:38] this stretch and howling and add sound

[9:49] repeating the affirmation I am perfect

[9:52] just as I am and that literally means if

[10:42] me really bend the knees as much as you

[10:44] need to maybe you can see the toes

[10:46] underneath the knees and when you're

[10:48] ready come to standing we're gonna take

[10:51] our balance posture

[10:52] go ahead send that right foot to connect

[10:57] with the left heel and just feel that

[11:02] connection

[11:03] maybe the toes are just resting on the

[11:05] ground maybe you can bring it up a

[11:06] little bit higher to the calf muscle

[11:08] past the knee never on the knee and then

[11:11] to the inside of that left thigh and

[11:14] just bring the hands to prayer and if

[11:16] you fall that's perfect because the

[11:19] affirmation for this is there's no such

[11:24] thing as failure there is no such thing

[11:30] as failure and when you know there is no

[11:36] such thing as failure the world is yours

[12:29] walk the hands towards the hips and then

[12:33] see if you can bow on down I am perfect

[12:37] just as I am reminding yourself that

[12:41] your imperfections whatever they may be

[12:43] however you may feel they are or

[12:46] whatever you feel they are do not define

[12:49] you as well as the perception of others

[12:52] keep sending the left hip back as the

[12:54] right hip moves forward last big deep

[13:26] you are absolutely ready go ahead and

[13:29] reach the fingertips all the way folder

[13:31] and then sweep the right hand all the

[13:34] way on down let's take this into the

[13:35] opposite side send the right hand to

[13:37] Center bring the right knee behind it

[13:39] reach the left heel on back pivot the

[13:42] left foot on the floor open on up and

[13:44] gatepost and then trace circles with

[13:46] your hands just opening up in the

[13:47] shoulder I love doing this first thing

[13:51] in the morning so if you are doing this

[13:52] first thing in the morning it's nice

[13:54] just to open up the chest the hips it's

[13:56] a good full-body move last big deep

[14:00] breath in sighing it out when you

[14:04] already reach the left fingertips all

[14:06] the way on forward sweep the left hand

[14:09] on down step back into plank pose take a

[14:12] nice big deep inhale exhale press up and

[14:15] back downward facing dog inhale slowly

[14:18] moving back to plank pose shoulders over

[14:20] the wrists hips or I should say hips in

[14:23] alignment with the sit bones and then

[14:25] exhale press up and back downward facing

[14:27] dog

[14:28] last time inhaling forward shifting your

[14:31] weight forward into plank pose and

[14:34] exhale press up and back downward facing

[14:37] dog

[14:38] and then go ahead slowly come back to

[14:41] plank

[14:43] go through your last vinyasa and knees

[14:45] come down hard slowly comes in between

[14:48] the hands and how into Cobra exhale

[14:51] downward facing dog

[14:53] let's finish up our last balanced

[14:55] posture so gaze between the hands bend

[14:57] the knees as much as you need to and go

[15:00] ahead and see if you can step or hop or

[15:02] float to the front of your yoga mat come

[15:04] into forward fold sweep from side to

[15:06] side shake off any insecurities fears

[15:08] self doubts lay the head yes lay the

[15:11] head no blood with the lips and just go

[15:16] ahead slowly come to rise all the way on

[15:19] up oh let's take that tree pose into the

[15:25] opposite side so go ahead ground down

[15:29] through that right foot feel the left

[15:32] toes get nice and light and then send

[15:36] the left foot to that right ankle maybe

[15:41] the toes are still resting maybe they're

[15:42] not feel free to use a wall if you're a

[15:45] near one maybe come up off the mat if

[15:48] that's a little bit easier then maybe

[15:50] bring the hand or I should say then

[15:53] maybe bringing the foot to the calf

[15:55] muscle and then to the inner thigh I'm

[16:03] just bringing the hands to prayer focus

[16:05] on your Drishti and if you fall there's

[16:07] no such thing as failure every time you

[16:10] fall in yoga you physically literally

[16:13] physically get stronger it's how babies

[16:16] learn to walk it's how we learn to walk

[16:18] by falling so just remember that when

[16:22] things come up and you feel damn is this

[16:25] a failure remember it is not go ahead

[16:30] sweep the hands on up open on up towards

[16:34] the ceiling melt the shoulders away from

[16:36] the ears stay strong and steady and an

[16:42] exhale

[16:44] last big deep breath in and exhale go

[16:49] ahead swim the hands on down and release

[16:54] turn the toes to face the corners of

[16:56] your yoga mat to face me and then we're

[17:00] gonna come into our squat sitting on

[17:03] down hands to prayer and just hang out

[17:07] here so grounding down through the heels

[17:10] of the feet bring the hands to prayer

[17:13] felt the shoulders away from the ears

[17:16] and just come and grounding down through

[17:23] the heels staying strong and just see if

[17:28] you can lengthen through the back from

[17:34] here repeat the affirmation I am worthy

[17:37] of all my current and future blessings I

[17:43] am worthy of all my current and future

[17:47] blessings because you are

[17:57] and let's go ahead and begin to send the

[18:00] hands on down come to sit bring the

[18:05] soles of the feet together so you can

[18:06] come here or my favorite you can cross

[18:10] the right knee over the left knee and

[18:12] that might be a little bit too much if

[18:14] you have a blanket or towel feel free to

[18:17] put the blanket so you feel that support

[18:19] in between the knees or you can just

[18:21] come back into soles of the feet

[18:23] together if that is more accessible and

[18:26] he'll sweep the hands all the way on up

[18:30] exhale go ahead fold on forward getting

[18:33] a nice stretch in the glute muscle tend

[18:36] towards the chest and just breathe

[18:51] when you're absolutely ready slowly walk

[18:55] the hands back towards the knees and

[19:00] then go ahead begin to uncross and

[19:03] unwind let's take that into the opposite

[19:06] side so you can stay with the soles of

[19:08] the feet together coming into your

[19:09] forward fold of but if you know sanneh

[19:11] or you can cross that left knee over the

[19:16] right maybe use your blanket frame or

[19:20] towel for in-between the knees and let's

[19:23] go ahead and he'll sweep the hands all

[19:25] the way on up and exhale to fold just

[19:40] surrendering

[19:41] [Music]

[19:47] and letting go last big deep breath

[19:54] paint and exhale slowly walk the hands

[20:01] on back on cross and come to sit onto

[20:08] the heels of the feet if you have a

[20:11] block you can go ahead and bring that

[20:14] block right underneath the sit bones and

[20:19] just come to sit nice and tall as we

[20:21] close out this sequence and this

[20:24] practice in a brief meditation seated

[20:29] meditation ready to begin your day and

[20:34] just take a moment to tune on in to all

[20:38] that you have done and all that you do

[20:42] bring the hands to prayer thumbs to the

[20:45] heart and just take a moment to honor

[20:48] yourself

[20:57] knowing that you are worthy that you are

[21:02] lovable that you are exactly where you

[21:04] need to be

[21:18] and that you are stronger than you

[21:22] realize

[21:25] ending the app with the affirmation my

[21:29] soul is unique and my journey is mine

[21:44] my soul is unique and my journey is mine

[21:55] you can stay here for a little bit

[21:58] longer in meditation taking a nice

[22:01] seated shavasana or you can begin to

[22:06] close out and begin the rest of your day

[22:08] I thank you for practicing with me and I

[22:11] hope that this sequence brought you

[22:13] confidence in yourself and Trust within

[22:16] your journey may you always remember to

[22:20] love thrive and most importantly

[22:22] practice on Shanti Shanti peace have an

[22:27] amazing rest of your dead namaste

[22:31] [Music]

An affirmation yoga practice pairs short positive statements with yoga poses so the words are repeated while the body moves and breathes. In Liza Colpa's 20-minute morning flow, phrases like "I am enough" and "I am stronger than I realize" are tied to specific postures. The aim is to replace negative self-talk with a steadier voice at the start of the day.
The video presents itself as a way to release self-doubt and approach the day feeling calm, confident, and grounded, though it does not cite research or promise specific results. Its main mechanism is repetition: the same affirmations return across poses so they become familiar. It works best as one part of a broader self-care routine.
The video uses "I am enough," "I'm exactly where I am meant to be," "I am lovable," "I am stronger than I realize," "I am perfect just as I am," and "there's no such thing as failure." Each is repeated during a specific pose. The phrases are short enough to say on a single breath.
No. The sequence moves through basic floor work, cat-cow, downward dog, plank, a lunge, a forward fold, and a standing balance, and it offers modifications such as a blanket or towel and the option to bend the knees. The video explicitly says not to worry if the hands don't reach far or the balance falls apart.
In the video, Colpa tells the practitioner that falling out of the balance is perfect because the affirmation for that pose is "there's no such thing as failure." The idea is to rehearse a calmer response to a stumble, so a wobble is not treated as proof of inadequacy. It turns a physical moment into a practice of self-acceptance.
The video suggests doing the sequence first thing in the morning, before the day's pressures build up. Colpa notes that it will still work if you come to it later. The idea is to set a supportive tone before self-criticism has a chance to take hold.
