Why Healing Begins When You Stop Looking for Reasons

A woman of 92 sits in a restaurant, petite and dressed up for her birthday, and tells her daughter she does not remember the hard years of her marriage. The daughter presses her. The mother looks up and asks a different question entirely: remind me what I loved about your father. That small exchange, which Caroline Myss describes in detail in this Hay House talk, becomes the doorway into her larger argument: that genuine healing is not simply a mental or logical process but a mystical one, one that asks us to rise above fear, set down the weight of the past, and live in present time. Drawing on her book Defy Gravity, Myss moves through the floors of a building that represent layers of explanation, the difference between the reasons we give for suffering and the grace that can meet us anyway, the hidden privileges that suffering can seem to confer, and the seven shadows and seven graces that shape how we choose. She closes with a guided prayer for release. What follows is a reading of that talk for readers who have not sat through its ninety minutes.

What does a 92-year-old's birthday lunch have to do with healing?

Myss opens the talk with a story she calls one of those marvelous stories that come along now and again. It happened, she says, on her book tour, at a lunchtime table where she was sitting with her brother. Next to them, a mother was being taken out for her 92nd birthday by her daughter, and the daughter was reminiscing about a difficult marriage. "You had a hell of a marriage with him," the daughter says, and the mother says she does not remember. The daughter insists. Then the mother looks her in the eye and asks, remind me what I loved about your father.

The daughter is winded. She was ready to rehearse grievance and instead gets a question she did not expect. She reaches for small things: the way he teased her mother, the roses he brought on her birthday. Then, Myss says, the daughter lands on the line that matters: he loved her. And the mother answers, in effect, that she loved him too. "That's all she wanted to know," Myss says. "There was nothing left that she wanted to remember. Just remind me of what I loved."

Myss is careful not to present the scene as a parable with a tidy moral. She admits she was crying, and so was her brother. What she takes from it is a reorientation: the mother had, in that instant, gone looking inside herself for the beauty rather than replaying the horror. The story is her entry point because it shows the thing the rest of the talk keeps circling. Healing, in her telling, is less about winning the argument over what happened and more about being able to find what was real and worth keeping.

Why does reason block the healing journey?

Myss begins her broader case with a detour through Isaac Newton. Most of us learned gravity through the image of the falling apple, she says, but the more interesting question is how many apples Newton saw fall before the one that opened the heavens to him. The law he named came from the Latin gravis, to give weight. For Myss, that is precisely the opposite of the mystical experience, which she describes as taking weight out of air, out of yourself, out of your soul, so that you can live in present time. Her title, Defy Gravity, refers to that mystical consciousness.

From there she offers a model of levels that will be familiar to anyone who has tried to make sense of a hard illness or a broken relationship. Imagine asking a doctor for only the facts. You get the biological and physiological account, and for some people that is enough. For others it is not, and they ask for the next floor: the emotional and psychological reasons. Those reasons may satisfy them for a while. But eventually, Myss says, a person may decide that is not enough altitude, and find that the building has another floor. On that floor sits the symbolic: the sense that every literal event carries a meaning beyond itself. "This is complicated," she says of that level, "but I like it."

Her point is not that the lower floors are false. She insists that every level has its validity and that the same is true of how we understand healing. The trouble comes when we insist that reason, at whatever floor, is the final word. A logical explanation can describe a wound with great precision and still leave the person inside it untouched. That is the territory where Myss locates the limits of reasoning, and the reason she gives for needing the mystical floor at all.

What is the difference between a field of energy and a field of grace?

Around the 40-minute mark of the talk, Myss moves from the language of energy toward the language of grace. Her shift is central to the book's argument. A field of energy is something we can measure, feel, and manipulate in a loose sense; a field of grace is something we receive. She says we do not live in a field of grace as a matter of course, and she describes the fear that keeps many people from recognizing it. The people she is describing are not wicked. They are frightened, and frightened people hold tightly to explanations because explanations feel like control.

Myss then turns to the way that reasoning can slip into self-justification. She talks about a man who, in her account, said to her that he did not know why he was suffering, and she turns the question back on the reader: if you truly are being guided, can you follow instructions that do not make sense? The opening of the talk gives her answer in a single line: by following the most unreasonable guidance, the most unreasonable miracles happen. She asks, in effect, for the fortitude to follow those instructions. She is also blunt that shortcuts exist. "That's that grace," she says.

Why does suffering become a privilege, and why is that so hard to release?

The talk's forgiveness section, which the description places near the 48-minute mark, takes on a more uncomfortable idea: that we can come to treat suffering as a credential. Myss describes a culture in which people feel they have paid their dues and are therefore owed something, a right to hit back, a right to be the one who was wronged. In that frame, suffering stops being an experience to be metabolized and becomes a kind of standing. The difficulty is that a credential is hard to put down. You have to admit that the story you have built your identity around is no longer carrying you.

That is why Myss links forgiveness to ending the cycle of suffering rather than to excusing harm. To forgive, in this sense, is to stop using the past as a currency for what you are owed. It requires the same surrender she describes in the mother's question: to let go of the lists of grievances and ask instead for the thing that actually sustains you. Her talk does not offer a formula for that letting go, but it frames forgiveness as an act of freedom for the one who has been hurt, not a gift to the one who caused the hurt.

What are the seven shadows and seven graces?

The talk's longest stretch, roughly from the 54-minute mark, is devoted to the seven shadows and seven graces that shape our choices. Myss treats them as a working vocabulary. The graces she names in the description are reverence, understanding, fortitude, counsel, knowledge, and wisdom. In the segment that begins around the 59-minute mark, she speaks of the grace of reverence, and she frames each grace as something to be taken up with everything you have. She also asks listeners to consider the shadows as the forces that pull against those graces, the patterns that make us want to be right, to be owed, or to be safe at any cost.

"Give me the fortitude. Give me the fortitude to follow the most unreasonable instructions you give me."

(Caroline Myss, opening of the Hay House talk)

Readers who want the full treatment will need the book and the talk together, because Myss moves quickly through these categories and returns to them repeatedly. The useful takeaway is the structure she proposes: healing is not one virtue applied to one wound, but a set of graces that you can call on in sequence as life presents its choices.

How does Myss close the talk with a prayer for release?

The final stretch, beginning around the 89-minute mark, shifts from teaching to practice. Myss asks listeners to take a deep breath and close their eyes, and she guides them through a healing prayer designed to help them surrender what has become too heavy to carry. The prayer is built on the same premise as the rest of the talk: that the divine can help us see clearly the choices we need to make, even when those choices seem unreasonable from the floor where we are standing.

It is worth noting what she does not do. She does not ask the listener to justify the past or to produce a complete explanation first. The prayer asks for something smaller and harder: willingness. That is the link back to the restaurant. The mother did not solve her marriage. She simply asked to be reminded of what she loved, and in answering, she let something go.

Where to go from here

If this talk has you thinking about the limits of explanation in your own healing, the most useful next step is to read Defy Gravity, which the talk draws on throughout, and to return to the prayer at the end of the recording as a daily practice rather than a one-time listen. Begin with a single question that Myss's story suggests: what did I once love about the thing I am still angry about? You do not need an answer that satisfies the lower floors. You are only looking for the next one up. Myss's larger claim is that healing begins there, in the willingness to stop demanding reasons and to receive what grace is already offering.

[0:00] By following the most unreasonable

[0:02] guidance, the most unreasonable miracles

[0:05] happen.

[0:07] Give me the fortitude. Give me the

[0:09] fortitude to follow the most

[0:12] unreasonable instructions you give me.

[0:15] There's shortcuts.

[0:17] There's shortcuts. That's that grace. Hi

[0:20] everybody.

[0:22] I I thought I would start by sharing

[0:25] what I consider to be one of those

[0:27] marvelous stories that are worth sharing

[0:32] that come along every now and again in

[0:34] life that it this just this happened on

[0:37] my book tour. This happened

[0:40] because I don't mean to eavesdrop, but I

[0:42] do. And so now you're going to know

[0:45] that, but

[0:46] I don't care. This was one of those

[0:48] pivotal stories that kind of

[0:51] characterized Defy Gravity.

[0:54] In that um

[0:57] the title refers to mystical

[0:59] consciousness, which we're going to get

[1:02] into as as much as we can get in in an

[1:04] an hour and a half.

[1:07] >> [clears throat]

[1:08] >> But

[1:09] I think many of you probably learned a

[1:11] little bit about gravity that Isaac

[1:13] Newton Do you remember that Isaac Newton

[1:15] image? Did you learn it like I did with

[1:18] um the apple falling from the tree? Did

[1:20] you Did you have that same image?

[1:24] But you have to think about this from

[1:27] the point that how many apples did

[1:29] Newton see falling from the tree

[1:32] before the one that he saw

[1:36] in which

[1:37] he

[1:39] the heavens opened up.

[1:42] And through that apple, he

[1:45] saw the the heavens revealed

[1:49] that there were laws governing this

[1:52] world that filled the air.

[1:56] That the air was not vacant.

[1:59] That this air round us is filled with

[2:02] mystical laws that govern all of us

[2:06] equally.

[2:07] And in that moment, he saw

[2:10] and understood one of those laws,

[2:13] and that he called the law of gravity.

[2:17] He named it gravity,

[2:19] gravis from Latin, to give weight to

[2:23] air,

[2:25] which is exactly the opposite of the

[2:27] mystical experience, which is to take

[2:30] weight out of air,

[2:33] to take the weight out of you,

[2:35] to take the weight out of your soul,

[2:38] and to

[2:39] master

[2:41] the experience of living in present

[2:44] time.

[2:46] So,

[2:47] on that note,

[2:49] I was in a restaurant on my book tour.

[2:51] It was lunchtime and I was sitting there

[2:52] with my brother,

[2:54] and right next in the next table was a a

[2:57] mother taking a daughter taking her

[2:59] mother out for her 92nd birthday.

[3:04] And because and and another reason I'm

[3:06] telling you this is because so much of

[3:08] the focus

[3:09] on Defy Gravity is about the challenge

[3:13] of healing placed within a mystical

[3:17] context.

[3:20] So, the mother and daughter are talking,

[3:23] and the mother is 92 and she's tiny

[3:26] because she's 92. You very rarely find a

[3:28] huge 92-year-old woman, right? They're

[3:30] petite, they're tiny.

[3:32] So, here's this tiny little woman, and

[3:34] she's so cute, and she's all dressed up,

[3:36] and here's her lovely daughter.

[3:39] And

[3:41] the daughter is reminiscing for the

[3:43] mother,

[3:44] and saying, "Well, you know how it was

[3:46] with Dad.

[3:47] You had you know, you had a hell of a

[3:49] marriage with him." And she's talking

[3:50] like this.

[3:52] And the mother says, "I don't remember."

[3:55] And the daughter says, "Well, you did.

[3:57] Let me tell you. You had a rough time

[3:59] with him." And the and the this little

[4:01] bitty woman, this itty-bitty cute little

[4:04] tiny little woman is sitting there

[4:06] eating her lunch and she says she looks

[4:08] right at her daughter and she says, "I

[4:10] don't remember."

[4:12] And the daughter's in is pushing against

[4:14] the wall and says,

[4:15] "Well, you did."

[4:18] And the daughter mother looks down and

[4:20] then looks up at her, looks her right in

[4:22] the eye and says,

[4:25] "Remind me what I loved about my

[4:27] husband."

[4:29] "Remind me what I loved about your dad."

[4:31] Wait.

[4:32] Wait, wait.

[4:34] The daughter goes

[4:38] and says, "What?"

[4:39] She just looks at her. It wasn't a

[4:41] deliberate aggressive thing, do you

[4:43] understand? It was this sweet little

[4:45] thing cuz she couldn't remember.

[4:48] She was so in the in the moment she

[4:50] couldn't she would you could see that

[4:52] she In that instant you could see that

[4:54] she was searching in herself for trying

[4:57] that for all that this daughter was

[4:59] saying to her about all the

[5:01] horribleness,

[5:02] she had gone down to try and find the

[5:04] beauty. And she came back and she said,

[5:08] "Remind Never mind that. Remind me what

[5:10] I loved about him."

[5:13] And the daughter said, "What?"

[5:15] And she said, "Remind me what I loved

[5:16] about your dad."

[5:18] So the daughter leans back and takes a

[5:20] breath and it winded her. It winded her.

[5:23] She did not expect this question. Well,

[5:24] by this time I'm like this.

[5:29] Beca- Well, who wouldn't be? You would,

[5:30] too, just admit it.

[5:32] You know you would. It would Right?

[5:34] Aren't you that way now? You want me to

[5:35] stop the story? No?

[5:37] Okay. So,

[5:40] Okay. So, she says,

[5:44] "Well." And it winded her. She went uh

[5:47] uh

[5:51] "Well, you loved the way he teased you,

[5:54] Mom. He used to tease you."

[5:56] And she said, "He did?"

[5:59] And

[6:00] you think it was my family, the way this

[6:02] got to me. He said Then she said,

[6:04] "Yeah." And uh

[6:06] he always brought you roses on your

[6:08] birthday."

[6:10] And if I could have gone out and gotten

[6:12] her a rose, so help me, I would have.

[6:13] She And And And she said, "He did?"

[6:16] And she said, "Yeah."

[6:18] And then she went on with this list of

[6:19] these tiny little things, and at the end

[6:21] she says, "Mom, he loved you."

[6:26] And she [snorts] said, "Oh,

[6:29] because I I think I remember I loved

[6:31] him, too."

[6:38] Now,

[6:39] doesn't [snorts] that just

[6:41] That's all she wanted to know.

[6:44] Right there.

[6:46] And all the rest was wait.

[6:49] She let go.

[6:51] There was nothing left that she wanted

[6:53] to remember. Just remind me

[6:57] of what I loved.

[6:59] Isn't that beautiful?

[7:03] >> [applause]

[7:05] >> Well, at that point,

[7:08] I'm crying.

[7:11] So is my brother.

[7:13] So I had to meet them.

[7:15] So now I'm talking to them.

[7:18] And I have to tell you they they are the

[7:20] the daughter's visiting me cuz she wants

[7:22] to come to where I live to see the Frank

[7:25] Lloyd Wright houses because he's some

[7:27] kind of architect or something, I don't

[7:28] know.

[7:29] But I live around his houses, so who

[7:31] cares? But anyway, hi.

[7:33] I just had to give you that story

[7:35] because I think the whole idea, just

[7:38] remind me

[7:40] of what I loved about you.

[7:43] I I'm going to write about that in my

[7:45] next in the newsletter coming up for

[7:47] December.

[7:49] Because I just have to write about that.

[7:51] I'm so inspired.

[7:53] But now let's talk about Defy Gravity.

[7:57] Because what inspired me about this

[8:02] is um

[8:04] the my fascination with healing and my

[8:07] fascination with us. I'm fascinated with

[8:10] us. I'm I'm fascinated.

[8:13] And And the whole journey of where we

[8:17] are now and what's happening in the

[8:19] world now

[8:21] and what's happening within us

[8:23] in terms of mystical consciousness.

[8:27] What is happening with us is so

[8:29] fascinating.

[8:31] And I think from all the perspectives

[8:33] that we can have, we can speak about

[8:35] what's happening in the world

[8:39] economically and historically and

[8:42] uh

[8:43] socially and from all levels. We can

[8:45] speak about it at every level and every

[8:48] level has its validity.

[8:51] Every level does.

[8:53] And the same is true with healing. If

[8:55] you went to a doctor and you said, "Just

[8:57] give me the facts.

[8:58] Just give me the facts." They could give

[9:00] you the biological

[9:02] and um

[9:04] physiological facts and you could be

[9:07] someone who says, "That's all I want to

[9:08] know."

[9:11] And then there's the kind of person who

[9:13] says, "That's not enough for me. I I

[9:15] need the next level."

[9:18] And what would that next level be? That

[9:20] next level would be

[9:22] I need to expand a little bit. I need

[9:25] the emotional

[9:27] floor of my apartment building put in.

[9:30] So, they might say, "Well,

[9:33] you know, your body's breaking down, but

[9:35] here's the emotional psychological

[9:38] reasons." And you think, "That's good.

[9:40] Okay, I can handle that. I can handle

[9:42] that."

[9:44] But maybe there would come a time

[9:47] when you would say, "I don't think

[9:48] that's enough altitude for me.

[9:51] Is there another floor in this building

[9:53] I live in?"

[9:54] And then you discover there is.

[9:57] So, you get to the next floor.

[9:59] And it's the same building, but you find

[10:01] out there's another floor.

[10:03] And then you get to that next floor.

[10:06] And it's the same building,

[10:09] but there's a higher altitude.

[10:11] And at that next floor

[10:15] you find out that there is an altitude

[10:18] of

[10:20] symbo- symbolic reasons why things

[10:23] happen as they do.

[10:26] There's a symbolic reason.

[10:29] And you think to yourself, this is

[10:30] really fascinating. This is This is

[10:32] interesting. I kind of like this. This

[10:34] is interesting. I You mean for every

[10:36] literal thing there's a symbolic thing.

[10:39] I like this. This is complicated.

[10:41] This is complicated, but I like it. It's

[10:43] fascinating.

[10:45] All this is true of everything happening

[10:47] around us, and it's all happening around

[10:49] simultaneously.

[10:53] What this means in a sense

[10:55] is that we're living in a world

[10:59] where the speed of change is faster than

[11:03] it was when you were growing up.

[11:06] It's faster.

[11:07] The speed of change when we were little,

[11:10] when we were all growing up, it seemed

[11:12] like it took a long time for things to

[11:14] change, but now they happen in the blink

[11:16] of an eye. Now when we get up in the

[11:18] morning

[11:20] the world we knew can be completely

[11:22] different, and that is amazing.

[11:26] The second thing that is fascinating

[11:29] about this world of multi-levels

[11:32] that seem to be interacting

[11:35] is that every change that happens, no

[11:37] matter where it happens in the world,

[11:39] seems to affect us.

[11:41] But when we were little

[11:44] it seemed like changes could happen in

[11:45] this country and that country and that

[11:47] country and this country, but they

[11:48] didn't come over here.

[11:53] And the third thing

[11:55] that it we're discovering that is very

[11:57] true

[11:59] is because these changes are happening

[12:01] so fast and they're so intimate.

[12:05] Every single change and everything we

[12:08] therefore do

[12:10] has to be considered profound. And

[12:13] that's a big word to introduce.

[12:15] Everything has to be considered

[12:17] profound.

[12:19] You and we now have to look at

[12:22] everything we do in the internet,

[12:25] everything we send out, we no longer can

[12:29] measure the consequences of our actions

[12:31] the way we once did. We can't control

[12:34] them. We can't measure them. And that is

[12:37] extraordinary.

[12:39] Now, hold that thought and come over

[12:41] here.

[12:44] At the same time, all of us have in

[12:47] these last years, for some people it's

[12:50] been 40 years, for some 20, for some 30,

[12:52] for some it's brand new,

[12:55] but we've crossed a Rubicon of

[12:57] consciousness

[12:59] in which we are now more interested in

[13:01] the power of our thoughts and our inner

[13:04] world than the power of our physical

[13:06] outer world.

[13:08] And in crossing that Rubicon,

[13:12] we've been dealing with learning about

[13:14] the power of our thoughts, our

[13:16] attitudes, our emotions.

[13:19] And from this world of energy, we've

[13:23] created energy technology like the

[13:26] internet. This is a reflection. That is

[13:28] the technical reflection of the

[13:30] collective soul.

[13:32] And what we're discovering is that look

[13:34] at that, our thoughts are as

[13:37] interconnected as the internet.

[13:39] Our thoughts do travel at the speed of

[13:41] light. We are technically creating our

[13:44] global soul. We're manifesting it.

[13:48] And this is a rather extraordinary

[13:50] shift. We are electromagnetically

[13:54] creating what we've claimed

[13:57] we believe

[14:00] for a long time. We have crossed into

[14:04] the energy domain.

[14:09] Okay, so let's hit the pause button

[14:11] there.

[14:14] With all of these changes that are

[14:16] happening,

[14:17] what we have yet to put into place

[14:21] is

[14:23] what is the

[14:25] how [laughter]

[14:26] is all of this actually affecting us

[14:29] psychically?

[14:31] How is this affecting our relationships?

[14:34] How is this affecting our interior?

[14:37] And how does this affect the speed at

[14:40] which we

[14:42] cope with the changes in our ordinary

[14:45] life. That's number one.

[14:48] How does this affect the kind of

[14:50] illnesses we get?

[14:52] That's number two.

[14:54] And number three, what is this doing

[14:56] within ourselves in terms of changing

[15:01] our spiritual needs?

[15:04] These things are the kinds of questions

[15:06] I look at when I talk to people and I

[15:10] hear them describe the changes that are

[15:12] happening within

[15:15] and I apply it to the challenges of how

[15:19] we describe healing.

[15:22] When when we were growing up, healing

[15:24] meant

[15:26] dealing with the illness in our bodies.

[15:28] It did not mean this multi-level

[15:30] approach.

[15:32] Now when we talk about healing, it's a

[15:34] journey of transformation.

[15:38] It's a journey of complete

[15:42] it has to incorporate

[15:45] sometimes our past we sometimes we take

[15:47] our past lives with us.

[15:49] Sometimes we take our relationships with

[15:51] us. Sometimes do you realize how much

[15:54] you load on

[15:56] to the healing journey

[15:58] in order for you to say you're healed?

[16:01] Just think about what we've done with

[16:03] what it means to be healed and how we've

[16:05] defined the healing journey.

[16:08] Within the context of all of that, is it

[16:11] any wonder so many people don't make it?

[16:16] And so many people find the whole idea

[16:18] of healing to be so intimidating.

[16:21] And I found that fascinating through the

[16:23] years as I've looked at healing and

[16:26] thought, "How come so many people find

[16:28] healing overwhelming?"

[16:30] Because when I started out I thought, "I

[16:32] think I would think that wanting to be

[16:34] healed and wanting to be fully in that

[16:38] arena of healthy

[16:41] would be the most attractive thing in

[16:43] the world." When in fact

[16:45] what I've discovered is it's the most

[16:47] intimidating.

[16:49] For people it is the most intimidating.

[16:51] So that became for me

[16:54] absolutely fascinating. Why are people

[16:57] so afraid to be healed versus

[17:01] how do we get there to heal? Do you see?

[17:04] I looked at it from the other way

[17:05] around.

[17:08] Um

[17:09] and as a I think that's one of the

[17:11] reasons why I've I saw up until now so

[17:15] few actual healings.

[17:18] I've seen more people fight being

[17:21] healthy

[17:22] than embrace being healthy. I've seen

[17:25] more people sabotage their healing

[17:27] process than actually

[17:32] jump right in and say, "Let me do

[17:34] everything I can do for my healing." Now

[17:36] I find that absolutely fascinating and I

[17:39] think that many of you could probably

[17:41] relate to what I'm talking about. And I

[17:44] think one of the reasons is because we

[17:46] have not actually identified the

[17:49] ingredients or the challenges to healing

[17:53] as fully as we need to. And I hope that

[17:56] I've done some of that with Defy

[17:58] Gravity. So let me talk to you about

[18:01] that.

[18:04] We are products of the age of reason,

[18:08] meaning that what's formed us actually

[18:12] goes back hundreds of years.

[18:15] One of the characteristics that we all

[18:17] have in common

[18:18] that is part of our greatest sources of

[18:22] pain

[18:23] is that all of us love life to be

[18:25] reasonable

[18:27] and it's not.

[18:31] And reason is one of the things, one of

[18:34] the goals, one of the little

[18:37] burrs in our saddle

[18:39] that sits at the core of the healing

[18:41] journey.

[18:44] When something happens to us, whether

[18:47] it's a life crisis

[18:49] or whether it's an illness, the first

[18:51] thing we do is we say, "What's the

[18:54] reason for this? Why did this happen?

[18:56] Why did this How could this happen? Why

[18:58] did this happen? Why did it happen to

[18:59] me?"

[19:01] Now, remember the building?

[19:04] At the physical level, we look for

[19:06] reasons. What are the What are the

[19:08] reasons this happened?

[19:11] Then you may find a couple of reasons.

[19:12] One could be you eat a bad diet. One

[19:14] could be genetics. One could be this.

[19:17] But that's never good enough.

[19:19] So, you have to take the elevator to the

[19:21] next couple of floors.

[19:24] And when you search for the emotional

[19:26] psychological reasons, the way we have

[19:28] organized

[19:30] the model of healing in these last

[19:33] decades, this body-mind-spirit

[19:36] template that we have,

[19:40] we have this notion that if we can find

[19:46] the emotional sources of our of our pain

[19:50] and our challenges,

[19:52] that somehow or other

[19:55] out of that search

[19:57] will come an answer, one answer.

[20:00] Usually, it's one. We think it's one.

[20:04] That will solve the mystery, and if we

[20:07] solve the mystery, out of that mystery,

[20:09] suddenly our health will simply be

[20:12] returned to us.

[20:14] Now, I want you to take the elevator to

[20:16] yet another floor, and that's the floor

[20:18] of the superstitious notions we have

[20:20] about the off-planet being called God.

[20:25] What we think is this is all rooted in

[20:28] an unconscious conscious way in a belief

[20:31] that

[20:33] the nature of God is that God is a

[20:36] logical off-planet being

[20:40] that operates just like us except times

[20:42] 100.

[20:44] So that we're loving God's all loving

[20:46] but big huge loving.

[20:48] And if we're logical and orderly and

[20:51] operate on a law and order system

[20:55] because everything here has laws and

[20:57] order

[20:58] then God must have laws and order so

[21:00] that if something falls out of order, I

[21:02] must have broken a law.

[21:05] Like the story of Job and if I could

[21:07] figure out what law I broke, then

[21:10] everything's going to be returned just

[21:12] as it was. It has to be, that's just the

[21:14] way it is.

[21:16] How many of you buy into that?

[21:20] Nobody?

[21:22] A little bit?

[21:25] So none of you buy into that?

[21:27] Stop it.

[21:29] Just stop it. Let me do it this way.

[21:32] How many of you have ever said there

[21:34] must be reason why this has happened?

[21:37] There you go. Oh.

[21:40] You know, I'm going to get you coming or

[21:42] going.

[21:44] I'm going to get you.

[21:46] You may not have spelled it out so

[21:48] simple as oh, don't be ridiculous

[21:49] Carolyn. I have never said there's an

[21:51] off-planet being that operates oh, yes

[21:54] you have.

[21:56] The thing about me

[21:59] is that I simply call it like it is.

[22:01] I'm not afraid to do it like that but

[22:03] that's exactly what it amounts to. So

[22:05] here's the thing.

[22:07] What we've done is we've carved out this

[22:09] God

[22:11] that operates according to the system of

[22:14] justice.

[22:15] And so out of this comes this idea. If

[22:18] we trace this idea with a little more

[22:22] gumption

[22:24] at the root of this is

[22:26] this shouldn't have happened to me in

[22:28] the first place.

[22:30] And the reason for that is this.

[22:34] I am not ordinary.

[22:37] I am extraordinary.

[22:40] And

[22:41] what I've discovered is human beings

[22:44] have a contempt for the ordinary.

[22:48] And in our hearts we have this little

[22:50] mantra that says God make me anything,

[22:52] but don't make me ordinary.

[22:55] And it's the reason why parents will say

[22:57] things like my child is exceptional.

[23:00] It is?

[23:01] It looks like an ordinary baby to me.

[23:03] No, no, it is not ordinary.

[23:05] You can say anything, but don't you dare

[23:07] say it's ordinary.

[23:09] And it's like the superstition

[23:12] that parents have of putting the the

[23:15] mantra of extraordinary around this

[23:17] child so that the ordinary doesn't

[23:20] happen.

[23:23] And it's the same thing as believing

[23:26] that if you do not mark yourself in some

[23:30] way as extraordinary, the ordinary can

[23:34] happen to you.

[23:36] Now, if you pause for a minute,

[23:39] you think I actually believe that. I

[23:42] don't want to admit I believe it, but I

[23:43] believe it.

[23:46] And this is where that comes from when

[23:48] you think I must have had a There must

[23:50] be a reason why things happen.

[23:53] And the first thing that you have to

[23:56] realize when it comes to a crisis or an

[23:58] illness

[23:59] is that you cannot reason with crisis.

[24:03] There is no reason, reasonable reason

[24:07] why things happen as they do.

[24:10] When I noticed when I um

[24:14] Right before I turned 50,

[24:17] somebody asked me I did an online

[24:19] seminar the other night,

[24:22] and someone said, "Can you share with us

[24:26] some of your mystical personal mystical

[24:29] experiences?" and quite frankly, that's

[24:31] not the kind of thing I like to share.

[24:33] Those are private, personal things, but

[24:35] the one thing I said I will share is

[24:37] this.

[24:39] One of the most profound mystical

[24:41] experiences I ever had in my life was

[24:43] the moment I realized I did not have a

[24:47] deeply spiritual life.

[24:49] And the absence of God was for me

[24:54] one of the most profoundly spiritual

[24:58] awakenings in my life.

[25:02] And it was in exactly that second

[25:05] that led me into

[25:08] the the deeply mystical path that I now

[25:13] live.

[25:15] From which my work comes.

[25:19] One of the characteristics of mystical

[25:22] consciousness, which is where Defy

[25:24] Gravity came out of,

[25:27] is the understanding

[25:28] that

[25:30] nothing that healing is not a

[25:33] reasonable, logical experience, it's a

[25:37] mystical one.

[25:40] And to go about healing through the

[25:42] mind,

[25:45] you'll never accomplish it, and I

[25:46] totally believe that.

[25:48] I completely believe that a

[25:51] a a total, genuine healing cannot be

[25:54] accomplished

[25:56] through the mind alone, not at all. That

[26:01] in fact, solving your deepest problems,

[26:05] going through your deepest anguish,

[26:08] resolving your great mysteries, like

[26:11] what why can't I get my finances to

[26:13] work?

[26:14] Why can't I heal this heartache? Why

[26:17] can't I resolve this problem? All of the

[26:19] many crises that make up the human

[26:22] condition. Why can't I forgive this

[26:24] relationship? Why does this cancer

[26:27] continue to reoccur?

[26:30] All of the many, many sufferings

[26:34] that characterize, that make up human

[26:36] life,

[26:40] we cannot resolve them or heal them by

[26:44] relying upon the mind

[26:47] alone at all.

[26:49] Because 99% of the time, it is the mind

[26:52] that is damaged and needs healing as

[26:55] well.

[26:56] So, to rely upon the mind is like

[26:59] relying upon a broken leg to heal the

[27:01] broken leg.

[27:03] And it's simply not going to work.

[27:05] Because you try to reason with something

[27:08] that is unreasonable. And if you think

[27:10] of yourself when you become

[27:12] unreasonable, can someone reason with

[27:14] you?

[27:16] And the answer is no.

[27:18] Think of you in your most unreasonable

[27:20] moment and someone trying to make sense

[27:22] with you. And the answer is absolutely

[27:25] not.

[27:26] The truth is you have to ascend to a

[27:30] level that reason cannot go to. You have

[27:35] to, in fact, defy reason. You have to

[27:38] defy gravity. You have to go higher than

[27:41] your state of reason in order to deal

[27:44] with something unreasonable that's

[27:46] happened to you.

[27:48] How I came to this conclusion

[27:52] is that when I

[27:54] started to work with, when I wrote

[27:57] Entering the Castle,

[27:58] which is totally a text

[28:01] that is

[28:03] aimed at taking you deep into the

[28:05] interior of the soul, what I realized in

[28:08] that chapter of my life

[28:12] was that

[28:14] the nature of the soul is not deeply

[28:17] understood by Western culture.

[28:20] This is not a religious statement. This

[28:22] is not a Christian statement. It is just

[28:25] a statement of my experience with the

[28:28] Western tradition

[28:30] of our of our of our world is that we

[28:34] are much more comfortable within the ego

[28:37] spirit dialogue

[28:41] than within the mystical experiential

[28:44] dynamic of God.

[28:47] We like to talk about God. We like to

[28:51] meditate up here. We like the mental

[28:55] expression of God goddess.

[29:00] But the mystical experience

[29:03] of falling of being called out of

[29:06] control with the experience of God.

[29:11] However, one calls it and I don't go for

[29:13] political correctness. So I'm going to

[29:15] use the word God.

[29:17] Is not something the Western person is

[29:20] that familiar with and the reason

[29:23] even though and here's the thing. Wait a

[29:25] minute. Even though

[29:28] we are so close to it and we want it so

[29:30] badly.

[29:33] I think that every one of you if I took

[29:35] a poll, every one of you has said

[29:39] somewhere in your heart and soul for

[29:41] what reason have I been born?

[29:43] For what reason? For what reason have

[29:45] you given me life? And you think you

[29:48] think all of you think

[29:50] that that is a question. That that's a

[29:52] question that you've you've asked a

[29:54] question and if I say who you asking?

[29:57] I want you to stop and who are you

[29:59] asking?

[30:00] You've asked a question. Who are you

[30:02] asking?

[30:04] What would you say?

[30:06] Who Who are you asking? What would you

[30:08] say and how do you expect the answer to

[30:10] that question to come? How do you Do you

[30:12] want a FedEx? Do you think a FedEx

[30:14] letter is going to arrive? What do you

[30:15] Do you know really pause deeply pause

[30:18] for a second and reflect upon that

[30:21] because you know you've asked that

[30:23] question. You know you have.

[30:25] Now I'm going to tell you what you've

[30:26] really done.

[30:28] That is not a question. That is a

[30:30] prayer.

[30:32] That's a prayer. You can't take a prayer

[30:33] back. You cannot take a prayer back. You

[30:35] can't say oops come back here." It's

[30:37] gone like a feather in the wind.

[30:41] And when you when you when you utter a

[30:43] prayer that says, "For what reason have

[30:45] you given me life?"

[30:47] You are now on the fifth floor of your

[30:49] house. I'm in You're in the penthouse

[30:51] with me.

[30:53] When you say something like, "For what

[30:55] reason, God, did you give me life?" And

[30:56] I don't care if the word God's not in

[30:57] that prayer.

[31:00] If we were in a monastery and I was your

[31:02] abbess, you in the old days would have

[31:05] to come up and make an appointment with

[31:07] me and say, "I want to talk to you." And

[31:08] I would say, "What about?" You would

[31:10] have to say, "I want to say this prayer.

[31:14] Is it time?"

[31:16] Then I would say, "Let's talk." And the

[31:19] reason I would say that to you is this.

[31:21] This prayer is going to change your

[31:22] life. Let me Let's talk about whether or

[31:24] not your soul is strong enough to have

[31:26] your life changed like this. Are you

[31:29] strong enough? Do you understand what's

[31:32] going to happen if you say, "God, take

[31:34] away from me everything that is not

[31:36] significant." Because that's what you've

[31:38] just asked. That's what you've just

[31:40] prayed. And you would say to me, "Now,

[31:42] today you may say, 'No, no, no, no, no,

[31:43] you don't understand, Carolyn, what I

[31:45] actually said was, 'Would you please

[31:48] show me my biggest job

[31:51] with my pension

[31:53] and I'm just so tired of living this

[31:55] sort of thing. I want my highest No, no,

[31:57] no, no. No, I'm going to tell you what

[31:59] you've actually done is said, 'Dear God,

[32:02] strip away from me what is not

[32:04] significant because I am

[32:07] empty and I am yearning to be called and

[32:10] I'm frightened. I hear you. I hear you

[32:13] through my

[32:14] intuitive soul. I do hear you. Yes, I do

[32:18] and I'm terrified to listen. Oh, I am so

[32:20] frightened.

[32:21] Because I'm so afraid that if I listen

[32:23] to you

[32:25] I will lose the familiar.

[32:28] I will lose it. I will I will I will

[32:30] lose what is familiar to me

[32:33] and I will be called to make choices

[32:36] where I can't see the security

[32:38] that I'm familiar with in the physical

[32:40] world. What do I do then?

[32:42] How will I survive if I listen to this?

[32:45] That is what is true.

[32:48] And if you

[32:49] sit in your stillness, you will know

[32:52] that that is what is true.

[32:56] That all of you hear that voice. You all

[33:00] hear that voice.

[33:01] And your anguish, your deepest anguish,

[33:05] is not because someone in life has hurt

[33:07] you.

[33:08] It's because you hear that voice and

[33:10] you're terrified to say

[33:13] I'll listen.

[33:14] And what you tell yourself is, "I didn't

[33:16] hear that voice."

[33:18] And then you act opposite it, or you

[33:20] make up a reason for not following.

[33:23] And it hurts you. It hurts you so much

[33:25] it burns like acid reflux.

[33:28] And in order to listen to in order not

[33:30] to

[33:31] to cope with the fact that you have

[33:33] heard it, but you don't act on it.

[33:38] You have to blame someone.

[33:40] You have to blame your history. You have

[33:42] to blame your childhood for not being

[33:44] courageous.

[33:46] You have to say something's wrong with

[33:48] your life.

[33:50] But the nature of mystical

[33:52] consciousness, the nature of inner

[33:55] consciousness is like our woman in the

[33:57] restaurant who couldn't remember her

[33:59] past.

[34:00] Is that it's in the moment. Which does

[34:04] not mean it's unfounded. It doesn't mean

[34:08] it's going to lead you here one day,

[34:09] there an act without any kind of roots.

[34:12] No, no, no, no, no.

[34:14] It means that

[34:17] from the

[34:18] top floor of your house, from the very

[34:20] top floor, where you see very, very

[34:23] clearly

[34:26] you realize this is the truth. Every

[34:30] single action

[34:32] is spontaneously created from all of the

[34:36] energy in the moment, and I'm responding

[34:40] from exactly what's created, but it is

[34:43] on a path. It is not random. I'm not

[34:47] firing from the hip. It is completely

[34:51] in the cycle of absolute congruent

[34:56] guidance. That is a very high altitude

[34:59] to to hold on to. It's very high and

[35:03] it's very very present. Most people

[35:08] can't go that high for too long. They

[35:11] get there under extreme stress and

[35:14] circumstance when, for example,

[35:18] you have an illness and an illness

[35:20] causes you

[35:22] to suddenly say, "I can't be bothered

[35:24] with all that right now. I have to think

[35:25] real fast on this.

[35:27] I have to just take care of what's here

[35:29] right now. Never mind all this." And

[35:31] when you have a crisis or an illness,

[35:34] you find yourself shedding all the the

[35:36] weight from yesterday

[35:39] that you can no longer contain or carry

[35:43] that has nothing to do with surviving

[35:45] because you suddenly find yourself in a

[35:48] great big huge illness in the moment or

[35:51] a great big huge crisis.

[35:53] And you find that that type of dilemma

[35:55] causes you instantly

[35:59] to shed what is insignificant

[36:03] and look to the present moment.

[36:09] When I started to work with entering the

[36:11] castle, for the first time I saw people

[36:13] heal. Not just little but heal from

[36:16] cancers and crippling arthritis and even

[36:19] blindness.

[36:22] And what it required was that I lead

[36:25] them into the interior castle

[36:29] and into a healing journey and I I would

[36:32] like to end this workshop with that. If

[36:35] you Are you open to a healing prayer at

[36:37] the end? Is that comfortable with all of

[36:39] you?

[36:40] Okay. We'll go there at the end.

[36:43] But let me say that some of the healings

[36:46] that actually happened were

[36:48] instantaneous.

[36:50] I don't say that to you like, "Wow,

[36:51] let's look for that." No, it what

[36:53] Some occurred over the next days, the

[36:56] next weeks, but what is

[36:59] what I observed was this.

[37:05] And this is what led me to write Defy

[37:06] Gravity, which is where we're going

[37:08] next. I started to think what

[37:10] what was happening in this

[37:13] atmosphere that was so different than

[37:16] everything else.

[37:18] And what it was was the present nature

[37:22] of people who were one able to enter

[37:25] into not a meditation

[37:28] but a deep sense of one prayer, which

[37:31] then changed the

[37:34] what's called energy in the room to an

[37:37] atmosphere of the sacred.

[37:39] To an atmosphere of grace, which is why

[37:42] the graces

[37:44] take up a great deal of the information

[37:47] in Defy Gravity.

[37:50] When I went to write the chapter on the

[37:52] graces and the graces that are in your

[37:54] soul and identify them,

[37:56] write the prayers on them, talk to you

[37:58] about the graces in you, a chapter is

[38:01] usually 8,000 words. This chapter is

[38:03] like 26,000 words.

[38:06] When I started to get into the graces,

[38:08] what I realized is that in healing

[38:13] one of the most frightening things about

[38:15] becoming a whole person is that you

[38:18] don't have a map for it.

[38:21] You don't have a map of as a whole

[38:23] person,

[38:24] how do you how do you function

[38:28] with that power? What does it feel like

[38:30] to be somebody with People have said to

[38:33] me, "I'm afraid of being successful. I'm

[38:34] afraid" I don't even know what that

[38:35] means.

[38:37] What I do know is this.

[38:39] I think that people are terrified

[38:42] of empowering other people.

[38:46] I think they're terrified of it.

[38:48] I think people are terrified of being

[38:50] very loving

[38:52] and as loving as you could be. And the

[38:55] reason you are

[38:57] is because love is so powerful

[39:01] that in being as loving as you really

[39:05] could be, you're terrified that that

[39:07] person would become so empowered they'll

[39:10] leave you.

[39:12] So, people

[39:13] don't deal out love in small doses. Just

[39:17] enough, but not a lot to keep the person

[39:19] wanting to come back. But, they never

[39:22] dish out as much love as it's possible

[39:25] to give, which goes to show you how

[39:28] powerful this grace of love is.

[39:31] That you are conscious of never loving

[39:33] anyone as fully as you can, lest they

[39:37] actually leave you from giving them such

[39:41] huge wings.

[39:43] So, you don't love them completely.

[39:48] In discovering how much you actually

[39:51] have to give, you discover

[39:54] what a powerful agent of healing and

[39:57] change you really are.

[40:00] So, I described these graces and we're

[40:02] going to go into them

[40:04] as I move in completely. And what I

[40:07] realized is the people who fully accept

[40:12] that they are they they stop using the

[40:14] word energy. That that that's a word for

[40:15] ordinary mortals.

[40:17] And they realize that if you add your

[40:20] lens, the mystical lens to your your

[40:23] heart and soul, you realize it's not

[40:26] energy, it's grace. We live in a field

[40:28] of grace. We don't live in a field of

[40:30] energy.

[40:34] Not everybody can handle that altitude.

[40:37] Some people need to live on the first

[40:39] floor.

[40:40] They need to think this is just air. The

[40:42] second floor it becomes energy. The

[40:44] penthouse it becomes grace.

[40:48] You see it for what it really is, but

[40:49] when it becomes grace,

[40:51] you realize everything within the field

[40:54] is divine.

[40:56] Everybody's divine.

[40:58] Every life, every breath you take is

[41:00] filled with divinity, and everyone who

[41:01] stands in your field must be seen as

[41:04] part of that divinity. You cannot say,

[41:07] "If I don't like you, I'll toss you off

[41:10] the roof, and you go back to the world

[41:11] of oxygen."

[41:15] It is very difficult to live at that

[41:17] altitude. This is what a mystic calls

[41:20] the revelation of truth.

[41:23] It is not just me who

[41:26] has a sense of divinity. If I have it, I

[41:29] must give it to you. I must give it to

[41:31] you.

[41:33] And that is the truth. The truth The

[41:36] truth of it is it's not revealed to me

[41:38] for me. It is because I must see it in

[41:40] everybody else. Somebody might say,

[41:42] "That's too much for me." I remember

[41:44] doing a workshop in Britain, and we were

[41:45] talking about the power of forgiveness

[41:47] and the fact that it does heal, and if

[41:50] you see that, you are called to live it.

[41:53] You're called. You have to.

[41:55] And this man said to me, God bless his

[41:57] honesty. He said, "Oh, no.

[42:00] I am not ready to be more forgiving than

[42:02] the people I live with."

[42:04] No, no, no. Bless his honesty. He said,

[42:06] "I will not do it." He said, "It's too

[42:09] much to ask." He said, "I still need my

[42:12] anger. My anger protects me."

[42:15] He said, "I cannot be more forgiving

[42:17] than the people I live with." He said,

[42:19] "It's not fair to me. What do I do with

[42:22] my anger?

[42:23] What do I do with it?"

[42:29] One of the princip- One of the What do I

[42:31] say? Concepts that have formed the way

[42:34] we look at healing, the way we look at

[42:37] our lives, the way we live,

[42:40] is that

[42:41] when we lose power,

[42:44] we think that the retrieval of power is

[42:47] based on identifying who did what to

[42:51] you.

[42:52] Who did it? It's like a who done it

[42:54] mission.

[42:55] If I could figure out who hurt me,

[42:58] then everything's going to be fine.

[43:04] But the truth is, and it is a truth,

[43:08] that will never heal you. Because if you

[43:11] go and think, "Okay, now I know who did

[43:12] it. My first grade teacher, and then my

[43:16] father said this, and my mother did

[43:17] this." And you come back to me with this

[43:19] list,

[43:21] I'm going to say, "Now, did that make

[43:22] you feel better?

[43:23] Are you all better now?"

[43:26] And you're going to say, "Well, now I

[43:27] know." And I And I would say to you,

[43:29] "And you know what?

[43:30] You know what they said? And if you You

[43:32] went up to them and said, "You know you

[43:33] said this." They're going to deny it

[43:34] anyway, and now you're going to be six

[43:36] times as angry.

[43:38] And now where did you get?

[43:40] It won't help you. You may It may

[43:42] satisfy your curiosity, for sure.

[43:45] But will it heal you? No.

[43:48] That will not heal you. It may solve

[43:49] mysteries for you.

[43:52] It may satisfy some level of ego

[43:54] consciousness, but will it help you and

[43:56] heal you? And the answer is no.

[44:00] What actually starts the healing process

[44:03] is when I yank you back and say, "That's

[44:05] enough of that. Come over here."

[44:08] I am not interested in who did what to

[44:10] you. I have no interest in that

[44:12] whatsoever, and I don't want to talk

[44:13] about it again.

[44:15] What I do want to talk about, however,

[44:16] is what you want to do to them.

[44:20] And in that we begin to uncover

[44:23] the source of your rage, the source of

[44:25] your suffering. Because it's not who

[44:27] hurt you, it's how much you want to hurt

[44:29] them.

[44:32] And in that we find the source of your

[44:34] toxins.

[44:36] We find the source of all pent-up venom.

[44:40] These are the blisters that need to be

[44:42] lanced if we come to healing.

[44:47] And one of the reasons we have to

[44:48] emphasize that is this.

[44:51] We have a society, and it doesn't just

[44:54] It's not just us. This goes back a ways

[44:57] in which suffering is seen as privilege.

[45:02] And that I remember one time being in

[45:04] Russia. I was in Stalingrad. I'm not

[45:07] Stalingrad. I was in

[45:08] Where was I? Moscow.

[45:11] And I'm getting on a bus and it's

[45:12] January. Do you know how I mean it was

[45:13] so I don't know why I was there and I

[45:15] can't remember.

[45:16] The Who knows? Maybe I bilocated, but

[45:18] anyway there I was.

[45:20] I still can't I was there for a

[45:21] conference or something. But I'm getting

[45:23] on a bus. It's like 400 below zero.

[45:26] We're waiting and this man, this Russian

[45:29] man,

[45:30] pushes his way to the front

[45:33] and knocks everybody out of the way and

[45:35] gets on this bus and he says he had a

[45:38] right to do that cuz he was in the

[45:40] Battle of Stalingrad.

[45:44] And everybody said, "Okay, well." And I

[45:46] don't know if you know history like I

[45:47] do, but that was a bad time.

[45:50] Okay.

[45:52] What he said was, "I suffered more than

[45:53] you. I put my time in." Now, think about

[45:56] how we think.

[45:58] How many times have we said, "I deserve

[46:01] this because I've had a bad day.

[46:03] I've suffered, therefore I can do this."

[46:08] How many times have you said, "That

[46:10] person does That person earned that

[46:14] because why? They've suffered. They've

[46:15] paid their dues." What about that phrase

[46:17] paid their dues?

[46:20] For us, suffering holds some kind of

[46:24] power and privilege.

[46:27] And that if we tell somebody we've

[46:29] suffered,

[46:31] we expect some kind of response

[46:35] that we don't get if we tell somebody,

[46:37] "I am so happy."

[46:40] Happiness does not get the same response

[46:43] or hold the same power. If you called

[46:45] somebody up and you said, "I am so

[46:48] happy. Will you come over?" And they

[46:49] said, "I'm busy. I have company."

[46:53] Then you say, "Okay." If you call them

[46:55] up and say, "I'm suffering. I've had a

[46:56] horrible thing." And they said, "You But

[46:59] I have company." But you then raise the

[47:01] ante, "But I'm really suffering."

[47:04] You fully expect them to drop what

[47:05] they're doing because you're in pain.

[47:09] The suffering factor is a great big huge

[47:11] big deal.

[47:14] One of the reasons healing is difficult

[47:16] for us is our romance with suffering

[47:19] and the privilege it gives us over other

[47:22] people.

[47:23] I've come home and I get to beat you up

[47:25] cuz I've had a bad day. You just don't

[47:27] understand.

[47:29] I've had such a bad day.

[47:33] And finally realizing

[47:36] I do that.

[47:38] I do that.

[47:40] I do that. I use suffering as privilege.

[47:45] It's something a person has to realize

[47:48] that healing becomes a disempowering

[47:52] choice

[47:54] because suffering as privilege has to go

[47:57] away.

[48:00] I can't do that anymore. I can't beat

[48:01] the hell out of you because I'm giving

[48:04] up my suffering.

[48:07] And that is a big deal.

[48:13] >> [applause]

[48:14] >> That, by the way, if you actually get

[48:16] it, if you actually get it, that is the

[48:19] source of forgiveness. When you finally

[48:21] get forgiveness has nothing to do with

[48:24] you.

[48:25] It has nothing to do with the other

[48:26] person. It is the most unreasonable

[48:29] choice you will ever make. Forgiveness

[48:32] is when you finally realize you hit me,

[48:35] I hit you, you hit me, I hit you. And in

[48:39] this we feel entitled to hit each other.

[48:42] And then one day you think, "You know

[48:44] what? This is so silly because

[48:47] all we're doing is passing pain and

[48:50] suffering back to each other that we

[48:51] feel entitled to do."

[48:55] Then one day the light bulb goes on

[48:57] deep, not in your head, but in your

[48:58] soul. And see, here's the difference

[49:00] between your ego and your soul. Your

[49:02] soul understands things that are

[49:05] unreasonable.

[49:08] Your ego will never do that.

[49:10] So long as you're looking for reasons,

[49:12] you're in your ego.

[49:15] Once you get to your soul, your soul is

[49:17] capable, on that upper altitude, of

[49:19] understanding and grasping what is

[49:22] unreasonable.

[49:25] One day, you get past that ferocious ego

[49:28] that says, "You have a right to hit

[49:30] them. Look what they did. They

[49:31] humiliated you. Beat them up. Beat them

[49:33] up."

[49:34] And one day, you slip past that heated

[49:36] ferocious ego.

[49:38] And you get into your soul.

[49:41] And your soul says, "Woof, that was

[49:42] nasty."

[49:45] And the soul says, "Look,

[49:46] are you ever going to understand that

[49:49] this is never going to stop? Here's an

[49:50] idea.

[49:52] Next time that person sends all his pain

[49:55] over to you, hang on to it, and I'll

[49:58] deal with it.

[49:59] Give it to me.

[50:01] I will. Let's pray it through.

[50:03] Let's pray it through. Hold on. It's

[50:06] going to be a crucifixion.

[50:09] But I want you

[50:11] to take on

[50:13] how much you're capable of hating. How

[50:16] much you're capable of hurting someone

[50:18] else, cuz that's really what this is

[50:20] about. That's what this is really about.

[50:23] I want to take you up to the penthouse.

[50:25] It has nothing to do with them. This is

[50:27] really about you taking yourself on,

[50:31] yourself.

[50:32] Send them away.

[50:34] And take all that rage, go to the

[50:36] mirror, and say, "This is about me

[50:38] taking myself on, and seeing the damage

[50:41] I can do to anybody when I am one angry

[50:45] person."

[50:47] This is about me

[50:49] and the damage I can do, and I am one

[50:52] nasty person.

[50:55] And I'm going to take this on.

[50:57] And if I get through this nightmare,

[50:59] this withdrawal from my own rage. This

[51:02] crucifixion

[51:05] I will never be able to harm a human

[51:07] being again. Put yourself on the cross.

[51:10] That's what forgiveness is.

[51:13] That's it. You get through that,

[51:15] it's over.

[51:17] >> [applause]

[51:17] >> Believe you me, you take yourself on.

[51:20] Okay, let's go in.

[51:23] What I finally realized is your healing

[51:26] and believe you me, you are not just

[51:27] healing an illness. When you go after

[51:29] healing, you are going in to discover

[51:32] this.

[51:34] That every single

[51:36] choice you make in life, everything

[51:39] whole and as we go into this, I want you

[51:42] to just pick something, choose

[51:44] something. Go in with me. Go into

[51:47] yourself with me. Pick something that is

[51:50] truly causing you pain.

[51:53] That's truly an anguish. That's truly a

[51:55] a mystery, a power something that you're

[51:57] working through that like a mystery that

[52:00] just is

[52:02] difficult.

[52:04] So, as I as we go into the seven shadows

[52:08] and the seven graces, you have something

[52:11] to travel on that means something to

[52:14] you.

[52:15] Cuz as I discovered this part of us,

[52:19] what I realized very deeply

[52:22] was that

[52:25] the

[52:27] healing is more it it's not just about

[52:30] focusing on one thing.

[52:33] It's about a transformation,

[52:36] a mystical awakening that says I I I I I

[52:40] cannot be afraid to be loving. I can't.

[52:43] I can't if if I if I turn love down low,

[52:47] I'm never going to get out of this.

[52:49] I am never going to get out of this.

[52:52] And at the end of the day, every breath

[52:54] we we take, every choice we make, every

[52:56] single interaction,

[52:58] we either

[53:00] infuse it with grace or the absence of

[53:03] grace. Either we grace it with love or

[53:06] the absence of it. Every single thing

[53:08] every single thing. And the more you're

[53:10] afraid of grace, the more you're afraid

[53:13] of your graces, the more you fill

[53:16] everything with fear.

[53:19] And if you fill your field with fear,

[53:22] you fill your body with and your life

[53:24] with fear.

[53:26] Okay, so I'm going to take you in.

[53:29] Uh you know, I I

[53:31] we

[53:32] We We don't have a lot of time. I'm I'm

[53:35] sorry. This needs to be done so deeply

[53:38] and so deeply.

[53:40] I'm doing some great workshops on two

[53:42] things. And one is the graces and the

[53:44] passions, and the other is the mystical

[53:47] laws that operate behind the scenes. And

[53:50] so I I really invite you all to come to

[53:53] those.

[53:54] I don't know if I could stick you all

[53:55] in, but I would just

[53:57] Here we go.

[53:59] The way this would be ideally taught,

[54:01] the way I'm going to teach it is through

[54:03] your chakras and through all the

[54:04] illnesses that go in there and all the

[54:06] others. And I can't do that. So but very

[54:08] fast is this. You all know where your

[54:10] chakras are.

[54:11] Isn't that amazing? Imagine teaching

[54:13] your parents that.

[54:16] Isn't that hilarious?

[54:19] I could say to my my father, "You go sit

[54:20] on your chakra." Right? But I couldn't

[54:22] Anyway.

[54:27] Compared to the delicacy of the graces

[54:29] and the shadows,

[54:31] the chakras are like concrete.

[54:35] To to give you a a difference between

[54:37] these forces.

[54:41] So,

[54:42] the elegance of the soul is just the

[54:47] center of your center of your center.

[54:51] The elegance of this So,

[54:55] the center that the the moment of

[54:57] thought, the moment of everything. And

[54:59] truly, if you are stillness in

[55:02] reflection, if you

[55:06] >> Our silence, fall in love with silence.

[55:09] You are deeply in your silence. You

[55:12] become very aware of how much you make a

[55:17] conscious choice as to how every choice

[55:19] will be conscious. You know it.

[55:22] You know exactly how you form a choice.

[55:24] This is what self-awareness is.

[55:28] I want you to picture yourself as an

[55:30] hourglass.

[55:32] And the

[55:34] waist of the hourglass is your fourth

[55:37] chakra.

[55:38] So that the big skirt, the the so that

[55:41] your first chakra comes out like a

[55:42] skirt, and that's the tribal chakra.

[55:46] And

[55:47] this is the center of as a as a chakra

[55:51] of being rooted, the root of your tree,

[55:53] and you all know that. And that's the

[55:55] center where if I was doing a reading on

[55:57] you, I would pull out the information of

[55:59] what your family roots are, what um

[56:04] your nationality, what the I where your

[56:07] where your all your superstitions are.

[56:10] The important one of the important

[56:13] uh threads

[56:15] that come into you from your family

[56:19] are the threads that deal with what you

[56:21] have to live up to.

[56:25] It is It's this first chakra that forms

[56:29] your sense of pride. This is your the

[56:32] pride. The shadow of that the pride is

[56:35] hubris.

[56:38] What shames you?

[56:40] The absence of which?

[56:43] The absence.

[56:45] What makes you feel badly? What you have

[56:47] to have Remember your first chakra is

[56:49] about stuff.

[56:51] The stuff that families say

[56:54] I remember when I was growing up, for

[56:56] example,

[56:58] in the '50s and early '60s,

[57:01] that was the first time someone on my

[57:03] block got a swimming pool. Could have

[57:06] been the first time in the neighborhood.

[57:08] Somebody got a built-in swimming pool.

[57:13] And everybody was like, "Wow, are you

[57:15] going to get to swim in the built-in

[57:17] swimming pool?"

[57:19] It was like this great big huge big

[57:21] deal. And it became a standard of the

[57:26] year Does your house have a swimming

[57:28] pool?

[57:30] You know,

[57:31] we just had a sprinkler.

[57:34] Okay?

[57:36] So, this sense of status

[57:39] is in your first chakra.

[57:43] And what equals status for you? Now,

[57:45] this is a big deal

[57:48] because these things form us.

[57:52] And they continue to form us.

[57:55] And they put us out of touch with a very

[57:58] potent grace, which is the grace of

[58:00] reverence.

[58:02] To have a sense of reverence about your

[58:06] life just because you are alive.

[58:10] A way of understanding the grace of

[58:13] reverence

[58:15] is

[58:17] it's often seen in its brilliance and

[58:20] beauty tragically when you are at

[58:23] someone's deathbed.

[58:26] And when they say to you, "Don't

[58:29] make the mistakes I've made in life.

[58:31] Appreciate people in your life. Don't do

[58:34] the things I've did. Have reverence for

[58:37] the people around you."

[58:39] It was the grace of reverence that woman

[58:41] was recalling when she said, "Don't tell

[58:44] me what he what he what I didn't like.

[58:47] Remind me what I loved."

[58:50] The grace of reverence, the grace that

[58:52] you realize, you know, with or without

[58:55] stuff, I'm in love with my life because

[58:58] I am alive. There's a History Channel

[59:01] special going on right now on World War

[59:04] II, which of course I'm glued to because

[59:06] I'm so passionate about military

[59:07] history.

[59:10] One of the soldiers is quoted

[59:13] after a battle, a bad battle, Battle of

[59:15] the Bulge.

[59:18] He sees his buddies getting shot up in

[59:20] all of this.

[59:22] And he's sitting back and he's smoking a

[59:24] cigarette. And his thought, after all of

[59:26] that bloodshed,

[59:28] he looks over a buddy that survives it

[59:30] and he thinks,

[59:32] "God, to be alive.

[59:34] To be alive.

[59:36] Life is still good." That is the grace

[59:38] of reverence. To hold on to life, life

[59:41] is still good. It's still here. I'm

[59:42] still good. I'm alive.

[59:44] Think about people who commit suicide

[59:47] are detached from reverence. They can't

[59:49] grab it. They can't breathe it.

[59:52] When would you need this grace?

[59:55] When?

[59:57] You think, "I've lost my job.

[59:59] Who am I?"

[1:00:00] The loss of identity, first chakra. Who

[1:00:02] am I?

[1:00:03] Who am I without my stuff?

[1:00:06] Who am I without my status?

[1:00:08] Who am I without without? Who am I?

[1:00:12] It's when you bend and you crash into

[1:00:15] that grace with everything you got. God,

[1:00:17] give me the grace of reverence. Give it

[1:00:18] to me. Flood me. I am feeling as if I

[1:00:22] have no reason to be on this earth and I

[1:00:25] need it and I need it bad.

[1:00:29] And I will tell you something.

[1:00:31] When you get accustomed to feeling this

[1:00:33] grace and you will, I tell you you will.

[1:00:36] You'll taste it. It becomes visceral.

[1:00:38] You

[1:00:39] It is a subtle subtle What is grace?

[1:00:43] Grace is a subtle divine wind that comes

[1:00:47] into you and inevitably you are moved

[1:00:50] just one notch toward feeling

[1:00:53] "I'll make it. Okay. All right.

[1:00:56] All right. I'll make it." It doesn't

[1:00:58] make you better. It makes

[1:01:00] you better. It doesn't make them better.

[1:01:01] It makes you better. It makes you know,

[1:01:04] "I'll be just fine.

[1:01:05] Okay.

[1:01:07] All right."

[1:01:08] >> [snorts]

[1:01:08] >> It's like that.

[1:01:10] This Grace doesn't make that better. It

[1:01:12] makes you able to handle that. Make sure

[1:01:15] you understand. It is this divine wind

[1:01:19] that grabs you.

[1:01:21] It says,

[1:01:22] "Okay, I'll do it." It takes this out of

[1:01:25] your It unties the knot in your gut. It

[1:01:27] takes the the heat out of the shame.

[1:01:31] And all of a sudden you're okay.

[1:01:33] All of a sudden [snorts] you don't know

[1:01:34] why, but you think I'm going to make it.

[1:01:36] That's just a tiny sample of reverence.

[1:01:38] Because if you don't have that grace, if

[1:01:40] you if it's not in you, if it's

[1:01:42] if it's not in you,

[1:01:45] you will never be able to look at

[1:01:47] another person and say,

[1:01:50] "You are as good as me." You will always

[1:01:52] find other people and have to diminish

[1:01:54] their self-worth.

[1:01:57] And that's just the beginning of what

[1:01:59] the absence of reverence does.

[1:02:02] You will always see people through your

[1:02:04] hubris and not reverence. And people

[1:02:06] will always be insulting your pride. You

[1:02:08] always make up things. That insults my

[1:02:10] pride. And that insults my pride. And

[1:02:12] that insults my And it's all made up.

[1:02:15] One of the things I do in my workshop is

[1:02:17] I make Tell me this list you've made up

[1:02:19] about what insults your pride and what

[1:02:20] doesn't. What It's all made up, but I

[1:02:22] want to see what your list is.

[1:02:25] And where you came up with that list.

[1:02:28] And what people don't realize is these

[1:02:31] are the real sources of your stress.

[1:02:36] This stuff is what really kills you and

[1:02:39] ages you. Now you're into mission

[1:02:41] control. Because when somebody when

[1:02:43] somebody says something to you, you This

[1:02:46] this this is your major territory. You

[1:02:48] walk with this wide skirt.

[1:02:51] No matter where you go. Here's your

[1:02:53] skirt.

[1:02:54] And the first thing you see, you see

[1:02:57] everything through the shadow of pride.

[1:02:59] Is that going to insult me? Is that

[1:03:00] going to humiliate me? Humiliate

[1:03:02] humiliate. This is how you really see.

[1:03:05] This right here. This This air is not

[1:03:08] empty. This air is thick with

[1:03:10] everybody's pride, with everybody's

[1:03:12] sense of Am I going to be humiliated?

[1:03:15] Humiliated? Humiliated? What if I sit

[1:03:16] here? What if wear this? Trust me.

[1:03:20] This is it right here.

[1:03:22] If I step too close on your pride

[1:03:24] just like that.

[1:03:27] Just like that.

[1:03:29] Got you and you're gone.

[1:03:31] That fast.

[1:03:33] That fast.

[1:03:34] Unbelievable.

[1:03:36] And when you make a every choice you

[1:03:38] make, every choice you make goes through

[1:03:41] this shadow first before it goes through

[1:03:43] reverence. I don't know, should I

[1:03:45] How do I feel about that person? Will

[1:03:47] they hurt my pride or are they Will they

[1:03:49] Will they embarrass me? Can I empower

[1:03:51] them? I don't think so. I don't think

[1:03:53] so. I don't have enough reverence for

[1:03:54] them. Shoot them down.

[1:03:56] Unbelievable.

[1:03:58] Unbelievable. And then you can blame it

[1:04:00] on your childhood. It's sitting right

[1:04:02] there. The only person in your soul is

[1:04:04] you.

[1:04:06] Second one.

[1:04:09] Oh, no, no, no. We're just starting.

[1:04:13] I

[1:04:14] We're just starting.

[1:04:17] And this isn't even a full workshop.

[1:04:20] Number two.

[1:04:22] Your second chakra.

[1:04:23] You know what so much so wonderful? If

[1:04:26] you really started to roll around in

[1:04:28] your graces,

[1:04:29] you'd feel like, "Oh, man, am I getting

[1:04:31] out of hell?"

[1:04:33] "Oh, man, I am so tired of being

[1:04:35] controlled by humiliation and the fear

[1:04:36] of being humiliated." Oh, man, I You you

[1:04:38] will feel like you are out of hell when

[1:04:40] you start rolling around in the sense of

[1:04:43] reverence and all these grace I'm

[1:04:46] telling you

[1:04:47] you just have no idea.

[1:04:49] You are free.

[1:04:51] Second shadow.

[1:04:53] You know, your second Oh, and we don't

[1:04:55] even have time to go into the illnesses

[1:04:56] and God, give me hours.

[1:04:59] The second

[1:05:05] The second is You know my website, so go

[1:05:08] to my website. The second is

[1:05:12] your sexual creative this area, guys, is

[1:05:16] weapons, right? Right? Knives, forks,

[1:05:20] spoons, guns.

[1:05:23] This is also where you have your wallet.

[1:05:26] Isn't that funny?

[1:05:28] But this area is the most irrational

[1:05:31] part. This is your sexual area. It's so

[1:05:35] funny and so irrational. I mean, think

[1:05:37] about this. You don't get so-called

[1:05:39] rational to you up here. I mean, all you

[1:05:40] married and partnered people and all

[1:05:42] that, just picture how you really are,

[1:05:45] right? You walk into an area, you walk

[1:05:47] into a bar, you walk into a restaurant,

[1:05:49] you spot somebody.

[1:05:51] And you say you're partnered or

[1:05:53] whatever, but this part goes like this.

[1:05:56] Am I right? Am I right? And you say

[1:05:59] something like,

[1:06:01] "I can't go there. I'm married." But

[1:06:02] this part says, "But let's go visit."

[1:06:05] And you really and you you really think

[1:06:08] about what you do.

[1:06:10] Or that person comes up to you and

[1:06:12] starts flirting and you say,

[1:06:15] "Oh, no, no. I'm I'm and you can't bring

[1:06:18] yourself to say,

[1:06:20] "I'm I'm

[1:06:21] No, I'm just here for the evening." And

[1:06:23] this part goes, "Oh, this is fun."

[1:06:26] >> [laughter]

[1:06:27] >> This is this part.

[1:06:28] This is the part that is a gambler.

[1:06:32] And this part says, "You can't afford

[1:06:34] this." "Oh, come on."

[1:06:37] That's this part.

[1:06:39] This part that says, "Let's go

[1:06:40] shopping."

[1:06:42] The wallet, okay?

[1:06:44] And what do you think the shadow is

[1:06:46] here? Greed.

[1:06:48] Big huge greed. Greed is totally

[1:06:51] irrational.

[1:06:52] And with you think greed. Now, if we

[1:06:54] were in a workshop together, I would

[1:06:55] say, "All right, guys, pull out your

[1:06:57] paper and your pen and I want a list of

[1:06:59] 25 things you are greedy for, driven

[1:07:01] like mad."

[1:07:03] And I'll help you out here.

[1:07:05] You can be greedy for attention,

[1:07:09] affection, stuff. List your stuff.

[1:07:13] Cars and toys and

[1:07:16] money and fame and power. And here's

[1:07:20] one, the power to punish.

[1:07:23] The power to control the behavior of

[1:07:25] somebody.

[1:07:28] The power to dish out

[1:07:30] compliments over the power to control

[1:07:33] somebody's future.

[1:07:35] Greed, that type of thing. Some people,

[1:07:38] and I hear this, I hear parents say this

[1:07:40] and it's so awful.

[1:07:43] They say things like

[1:07:45] if I

[1:07:47] only

[1:07:48] could take the suffering from my child.

[1:07:53] And I said to this one mother one, "And

[1:07:54] do what?"

[1:07:56] I mean, what would you do?

[1:07:58] Well, then my child wouldn't have to

[1:07:59] suffer. I said, "And then what?"

[1:08:02] And then what would your child do?

[1:08:04] Have a totally suffering-free life?

[1:08:06] And would that make you happy, Mommy?

[1:08:11] Is that what you want? So, then your

[1:08:13] child would be this sort of

[1:08:14] suffering-free brat

[1:08:17] and think that life is just perfect, but

[1:08:19] everybody else would greedy to control

[1:08:22] their child so that they don't know

[1:08:24] pain.

[1:08:26] But believe you me, that suffering

[1:08:27] mother would remind that child she's

[1:08:28] carrying their suffering.

[1:08:31] >> [laughter]

[1:08:33] >> "Don't you see what I'm doing for you?"

[1:08:35] Jesus.

[1:08:36] Who needs a mother like that? Greed.

[1:08:40] Now,

[1:08:42] greed so that you get ahead and someone

[1:08:45] doesn't.

[1:08:47] Now, if you really, really, really,

[1:08:49] really

[1:08:52] dwelled on how greed drives you and

[1:08:55] pride and how these two talk to each

[1:08:58] other,

[1:09:00] the grace in this

[1:09:02] this part of you

[1:09:04] is called piety, but it's not like

[1:09:06] holiness to God. It's your capacity to

[1:09:09] see the goodness in another person.

[1:09:12] Just for no reason.

[1:09:14] Because the way reason is is that the

[1:09:17] ego says there always has to be a reason

[1:09:19] for you to see goodness in someone or

[1:09:20] toss them out.

[1:09:23] Unless there's a reason, unless there's

[1:09:26] a reason, unless they're either useful

[1:09:28] or productive or something, there's no

[1:09:31] reason to be nice to that person.

[1:09:34] Got to have a reason.

[1:09:37] Whereas within a within the field of

[1:09:39] grace, no, you don't. What do you mean

[1:09:41] you have to have a reason?

[1:09:43] No, you don't.

[1:09:45] And here's another one. You would say,

[1:09:47] "I have a lot of reasons to think this

[1:09:50] person is horrible." And you can give me

[1:09:52] those reasons and in fact you probably

[1:09:54] do.

[1:09:56] The person could be this horrible,

[1:09:57] horrible, horrible liar, thief,

[1:10:00] miserable, horrible person and you're

[1:10:01] absolutely right.

[1:10:04] And in this the grace of piety says,

[1:10:06] "God,

[1:10:08] this person has been so violent to me.

[1:10:11] Violent. This person abused me.

[1:10:14] I need I I do not know

[1:10:17] what on earth

[1:10:19] but this person was also created by you.

[1:10:21] I do not know what our karma is. I have

[1:10:24] no I have I cannot see. I cannot see

[1:10:27] what I cannot see. I cannot see what I

[1:10:29] cannot see.

[1:10:31] But I need the grace to have a flicker

[1:10:35] that somehow within divinity this was

[1:10:38] not a mistake.

[1:10:40] Because I don't know what the reason is

[1:10:42] and I but if I hold to

[1:10:46] reason

[1:10:47] my ego will hold to hatred.

[1:10:51] Now your ego can't get there.

[1:10:53] And this is where prayer comes in.

[1:10:56] Okay, I can't dwell on that longer to

[1:10:58] help you out there, but let's go.

[1:11:00] Number three, this one we would work on

[1:11:03] for a long time. This is the This is the

[1:11:06] shadow of entitlement. What do you think

[1:11:08] you're entitled to?

[1:11:10] And if you say like the logical stuff,

[1:11:12] "Oh, I'm entitled to respect." And then

[1:11:14] to which I would say to from whom?

[1:11:17] From whom? Who do you think would should

[1:11:19] respect you? When you really get down to

[1:11:21] it, the entitlement some people say

[1:11:23] health insurance. Well,

[1:11:26] I'm not even going to go there.

[1:11:29] I'm not even going to open a political

[1:11:30] can of worms, but

[1:11:32] here's what's true because we don't have

[1:11:34] time. But, what's true is this.

[1:11:38] What you need to truly reflect on when

[1:11:41] it comes to this particular shadow

[1:11:45] is that for everything you think you're

[1:11:46] entitled to,

[1:11:48] "I'm entitled to this. I paid money for

[1:11:51] it. I'm entitled to be entertained. I

[1:11:53] bought a ticket. I'm entitled to all the

[1:11:55] things you really actually do believe

[1:11:57] you're entitled to." You won't admit it,

[1:11:59] but you do.

[1:12:02] It means that somebody

[1:12:05] has to deliver on those entitlements.

[1:12:07] It's like buying

[1:12:09] bonds in a bond pit. Somebody's got to

[1:12:10] deliver it. It's like buying you you you

[1:12:13] you somebody owes you for every

[1:12:16] entitlement. You may think, "I was

[1:12:18] entitled to a perfect marriage. I was

[1:12:20] entitled to a perfect child.

[1:12:23] I was entitled to a life in which I

[1:12:26] didn't have these problems."

[1:12:31] When somebody says to me, "I never

[1:12:32] thought this would happen to me."

[1:12:34] Whatever this is, could be an illness,

[1:12:35] could be a job loss, could be who knows

[1:12:38] what.

[1:12:39] My response is, "Who did you think it

[1:12:40] would happen to?"

[1:12:43] What do you think is special about you

[1:12:45] that this wouldn't happen to you? To

[1:12:47] which is outcomes the myth, "But, I'm

[1:12:49] not an ordinary."

[1:12:51] And so on and so forth goes this myth of

[1:12:54] entitlement.

[1:12:56] "I was entitled to a perfect perfect

[1:12:58] what?"

[1:13:00] And I will tell you this

[1:13:02] that if you

[1:13:04] don't pick at this thing called

[1:13:07] entitlement, you'll never get how

[1:13:10] entitled you really think you are.

[1:13:13] And that if your entitlements are not

[1:13:15] fulfilled, you will make someone suffer

[1:13:17] for that.

[1:13:19] It may not be someone who has anything

[1:13:21] to do with who disappointed you, but

[1:13:23] believe you me, you'll take it out on

[1:13:24] somebody.

[1:13:25] Someone's going to pay.

[1:13:28] It may be someone who has nothing to do

[1:13:32] with your life, but you will make

[1:13:33] someone at work miserable.

[1:13:36] You will make someone in someone you'll

[1:13:38] just pick out miserable, but you will

[1:13:41] make someone pay.

[1:13:44] And if not, you'll make your physical

[1:13:46] body pay.

[1:13:48] You will make your body pay by saying,

[1:13:50] "I am entitled to eat this. I'm

[1:13:52] miserable and I had a bad childhood."

[1:13:55] And soon diabetes shows up.

[1:13:58] Trust me. And nobody ever says, "You

[1:14:01] know why you're sick? Entitlement."

[1:14:06] And I'm telling you, this is the source

[1:14:08] of more illnesses at the end of the day.

[1:14:12] And the grace that matches that is the

[1:14:14] grace of understanding.

[1:14:16] And the grace of understanding is not

[1:14:19] about, "God, give me the grace to It's

[1:14:21] It's not about, you know, like, you

[1:14:22] better understand me with the way the

[1:14:24] ego is." It's like, "God, I give me the

[1:14:26] grace to understand the higher truth of

[1:14:28] why I'm with this person, why we're

[1:14:31] together, what what What is the greater

[1:14:34] truth coming through the two of us?

[1:14:36] I need to see higher than the way we're

[1:14:38] talking because what is the truth?" Or

[1:14:40] here's another beautiful prayer for the

[1:14:42] grace. And all this is in the book, so I

[1:14:44] can fly through it.

[1:14:46] It's

[1:14:47] I Give me the grace to be able to

[1:14:49] articulate something because that needs

[1:14:53] to be understood that this person can't

[1:14:55] see, maybe I can see it for them.

[1:14:58] It's a fantastic grace.

[1:15:01] Or

[1:15:02] "God, give me the grace to understand

[1:15:04] what's unfolding in my life because I'm

[1:15:06] not seeing it clearly. I'm not seeing it

[1:15:08] clearly. And because I'm not, I'm acting

[1:15:11] out of fear."

[1:15:13] It is a potent grace. And you know when

[1:15:16] you're not in the grace because your

[1:15:18] stomach's in a knot, and you know when

[1:15:20] you're dropping to the level of fear,

[1:15:22] and that's exactly when you hit the

[1:15:23] button and you say, "Oh, no, no, I can't

[1:15:25] act from this cuz I'm not acting from

[1:15:27] grace." And you know when you are

[1:15:29] because in that instant you feel that

[1:15:30] fear just diminish.

[1:15:35] The fourth, sorry.

[1:15:38] Okay, I love this grace, but I'm not

[1:15:40] going there yet. Here's your shadow.

[1:15:46] This is the shadow of wrath, and that's

[1:15:49] the angry heart.

[1:15:51] You know what? I've been at this work

[1:15:52] now for so many years, so many years,

[1:15:55] and I will tell you one of I would say

[1:15:58] that

[1:15:59] if I had to list the epidemics

[1:16:01] that I have come across in our

[1:16:05] contemporary culture.

[1:16:07] The epidemic of being unhappy,

[1:16:09] discontent, and the epidemic of anger.

[1:16:13] And this is the angry heart.

[1:16:15] And truly, I mean, like

[1:16:18] what what what is everybody so angry

[1:16:20] about? What what what what are we so

[1:16:23] angry about? But the angry heart

[1:16:26] is characteristic of so many people.

[1:16:28] What are you so angry about? Why why Why

[1:16:31] do people carry so much anger in them?

[1:16:34] But wrath is

[1:16:37] here.

[1:16:38] A wrathful heart, an angry heart.

[1:16:41] Sometimes people feel they were entitled

[1:16:43] to a different kind of life, or entitled

[1:16:45] to a inheritance, or entitled to

[1:16:47] whatever they feel entitled to.

[1:16:51] But wrath lives here.

[1:16:55] The grace that goes here, I love. I love

[1:16:58] I love I love. This is the grace of

[1:17:00] fortitude. Get Get familiar with this

[1:17:03] grace, cuz you're going to love it.

[1:17:05] In my years, especially during the years

[1:17:08] that I taught sacred contracts,

[1:17:16] and all of you have a con- contract that

[1:17:19] is written in this brilliant archetypal

[1:17:22] language.

[1:17:28] Um

[1:17:30] and all of you all of you

[1:17:33] want to touch and grab your highest

[1:17:37] potential.

[1:17:39] The ego understands the highest

[1:17:41] potential

[1:17:44] as an occupation because the ego simply

[1:17:47] wants to survive. It's simply your

[1:17:49] survival machine. Where's my job?

[1:17:52] Where's the highest salary? I need to

[1:17:53] survive.

[1:17:56] But your soul understands that every

[1:17:59] second of every minute of every

[1:18:01] conversation as well as every

[1:18:05] creative

[1:18:07] act you are inspired to do

[1:18:11] as well as every task, every single

[1:18:14] everything has a highest potential.

[1:18:17] In other words, there's not just one.

[1:18:19] There's a highest potential in

[1:18:21] everything. We are, for example,

[1:18:23] interacting.

[1:18:26] And you want to say something.

[1:18:28] And in that moment, you hear, "Why do

[1:18:31] say this instead of that?"

[1:18:33] You're inspired to say the highest thing

[1:18:36] you could possibly say. And how often

[1:18:38] times you won't say it because you

[1:18:39] think, "What will someone think?"

[1:18:42] And yet it was the highest possible

[1:18:44] potential in the moment.

[1:18:47] Or you do act on it.

[1:18:49] Or what if, in fact, you are on the edge

[1:18:52] of your creative seat?

[1:18:54] And it's this precious moment in your

[1:18:56] life where you could make such a

[1:18:59] difference in your world.

[1:19:01] It's time for a great life change.

[1:19:04] And you're terrified. And this is a

[1:19:06] world to be frightened in right now.

[1:19:09] And yet you say, "God, give me the

[1:19:11] fortitude. Give me the fortitude. Let me

[1:19:14] act on it because at that highest

[1:19:16] potential, here's the thing you have to

[1:19:17] understand about the soul.

[1:19:20] By following the most unreasonable

[1:19:23] guidance, the most unreasonable miracles

[1:19:25] happen.

[1:19:27] Just remember I told you that. By

[1:19:29] following the most unreasonable

[1:19:31] guidance, the most unreasonable miracles

[1:19:33] happen.

[1:19:36] Give me the fortitude. Give me the

[1:19:37] fortitude to follow the most

[1:19:40] unreasonable instructions you give me.

[1:19:43] There's shortcuts.

[1:19:45] There's shortcuts. That's that grace.

[1:19:48] Okay, number five.

[1:19:51] This is the shadow, you know how many

[1:19:53] times we ask

[1:19:56] I don't know what to do. I don't know

[1:19:57] what to do. I know don't I don't know

[1:19:59] what to do. I need this. I need that.

[1:20:02] And in fact, you really do and it was

[1:20:04] what I was saying earlier, how often we

[1:20:07] we end up

[1:20:09] betraying ourselves because we really

[1:20:11] know more than we claim we do and that

[1:20:13] is the great that is that kind of

[1:20:16] never saying what's true. Never saying

[1:20:20] what's true.

[1:20:22] That's a kind of the shadow of spiritual

[1:20:25] gluttony is what we call it. Where in

[1:20:27] fact, you know more, but you just keep

[1:20:29] putting more in that you because you

[1:20:31] claim

[1:20:33] you keep giving feeding yourself lies.

[1:20:37] It's a type of gluttony.

[1:20:41] And the grace that goes with this is a

[1:20:43] brilliant grace. It's called the grace

[1:20:45] of counsel.

[1:20:48] Which you say God, let me have some

[1:20:50] counsel here. Counsel me. I need to

[1:20:53] understand and here's specifically what

[1:20:56] you are looking for.

[1:20:58] I need to understand the higher truth.

[1:21:02] The mystical truth of what is unfolding

[1:21:05] in my life. Now, this I went into great

[1:21:09] detail on this particular grace because

[1:21:12] it's so brilliant.

[1:21:16] Counsel is how to understand this.

[1:21:21] If I was talking to you about a crisis

[1:21:23] in your life, that I would talk to you

[1:21:25] on two levels. I would first of all say,

[1:21:27] well,

[1:21:28] we have to acknowledge that the crisis

[1:21:30] happened. It's changing your life at the

[1:21:33] physical level. The grace of counsel, I

[1:21:35] would then say, now, let's talk about

[1:21:38] its grander meaning, archetypally,

[1:21:41] significantly, what powers are changing

[1:21:44] in your life? Why do you think it's

[1:21:46] coming at this time? What are the

[1:21:48] symbolic meanings? What What is

[1:21:51] changing? What needs to be removed from

[1:21:53] you? That's the grace of counsel.

[1:21:55] To counsel you at a high truth level.

[1:21:59] God, give me an And when you say, "God,

[1:22:01] counsel me. I need to understand my life

[1:22:04] at that level." That is that grace.

[1:22:09] The next shadow

[1:22:11] is

[1:22:13] the

[1:22:14] You know, the mind is a tricky weapon.

[1:22:18] Your mind can be an ally, or your mind

[1:22:20] can be your worst aggressor. And the

[1:22:22] shadow that you deal with in your mind

[1:22:25] as it twists things is the shadow of

[1:22:27] envy.

[1:22:28] And the envy can be a nasty, nasty,

[1:22:30] nasty little reptile to deal with.

[1:22:34] The grace that works in this is called

[1:22:36] the grace of knowledge.

[1:22:39] And the grace of knowledge is where you

[1:22:41] have a masterful understanding

[1:22:45] of what's unfolding in terms of mystical

[1:22:48] truth. Mystical truth.

[1:22:52] The grace of knowledge, for example, is

[1:22:54] not unlike what I'm teaching you here

[1:22:57] about mystical laws.

[1:23:00] You know, I'm doing

[1:23:01] um I decided to do a workshop on the

[1:23:03] mystical laws.

[1:23:06] Uh teaching, for example,

[1:23:09] about what does it mean to understand

[1:23:12] the universe through the masterful

[1:23:15] teachings

[1:23:17] like

[1:23:18] all is one. If you understood that

[1:23:21] through your biology, through your soul,

[1:23:24] and actually began to understand that

[1:23:27] law. Or, for example,

[1:23:30] the laws through which even Pythagoras

[1:23:32] understood numbers. One was whole. Two,

[1:23:36] from Pythagoras, is birth, to see the

[1:23:39] world as halves. Three was the trinity.

[1:23:43] To understand the world as a mystically

[1:23:46] operating mechanical force as opposed to

[1:23:50] literal.

[1:23:51] This is how let's say the some of the

[1:23:54] some of the mystics understood

[1:23:57] this brilliantly mechanical universe

[1:24:00] that is an expression of divinity.

[1:24:03] One of the nuns that I know from my

[1:24:06] college days

[1:24:09] said something so brilliant.

[1:24:12] There was a miracle healing that

[1:24:14] happened on the college where I went to

[1:24:16] went to school. It's a convent.

[1:24:18] So they did see an end to all this

[1:24:21] stories and they interviewed this nun.

[1:24:23] And this reporter said to sister Kevin

[1:24:26] what how do you explain a miracle?

[1:24:29] And she said this fast. She said, "Oh, a

[1:24:31] miracle is when God bends the laws of

[1:24:33] nature on your behalf." Is that the most

[1:24:36] brilliant explanation for miracle you

[1:24:38] ever heard?

[1:24:40] But here's the thing.

[1:24:42] Understanding

[1:24:44] how

[1:24:45] the laws of nature and prayer and grace

[1:24:48] function is a mystical truth.

[1:24:52] And I want to teach that. I'm ecstatic

[1:24:54] about teaching that. And that's the

[1:24:56] grace of knowledge.

[1:24:58] Finally

[1:25:00] finally

[1:25:03] the last

[1:25:05] in the seventh

[1:25:08] I know that

[1:25:11] all of us constantly receive the grace

[1:25:14] of guidance. We all do. We all do in

[1:25:16] every moment of every moment of every

[1:25:18] moment.

[1:25:20] And it's very hard to operate on that

[1:25:23] guidance all the time.

[1:25:25] But one of the things I know is that

[1:25:31] I I truly believe

[1:25:34] that in this time that we're living in,

[1:25:37] this pivotal time of change, this axial

[1:25:39] time

[1:25:42] we can no longer use the excuses

[1:25:45] that have been used by our elders

[1:25:49] as to why we are not

[1:25:53] responding to our highest potential.

[1:25:57] The fact is

[1:25:58] each person, if they truly drew from

[1:26:02] their graces,

[1:26:04] would be such a profound

[1:26:06] source of change and such a profound

[1:26:09] light of healing.

[1:26:12] And I think that if you if you got to

[1:26:14] know your interior and your graces and

[1:26:16] your shadow, you would know how powerful

[1:26:19] you really are and how powerful a grace

[1:26:21] is

[1:26:23] because of how hard it is to actually

[1:26:26] use a grace in its full power with

[1:26:29] another human being.

[1:26:32] And I say that because this shadow is

[1:26:35] the shadow of sloth, which means to

[1:26:37] withhold when you're guided.

[1:26:40] It means to be lazy on guidance. It just

[1:26:42] doesn't mean to be sitting down and

[1:26:44] doing nothing.

[1:26:46] But the grace that goes with this is the

[1:26:47] grace of wisdom that says if I don't do

[1:26:50] this, the consequences of this or what

[1:26:53] is the wise thing to do? And to that I

[1:26:56] would say, what is the wise thing?

[1:26:59] Why would God send you

[1:27:02] anywhere to be exposed to great

[1:27:04] teachings, not just mine, which I do

[1:27:06] consider to be respectfully good,

[1:27:09] or to others? What is heaven asking of

[1:27:13] you?

[1:27:14] I would have to say,

[1:27:16] in my humble opinion, that in some way

[1:27:19] each of you is being called to something

[1:27:21] greater

[1:27:22] and that you truly truly, out of respect

[1:27:26] for yourself,

[1:27:28] need to sit in stillness and say, what

[1:27:30] am I what what? And don't look outside

[1:27:34] of yourself as if it's some great big

[1:27:36] huge great new task job because that's

[1:27:39] what the ego ego wants.

[1:27:42] Instead, go inside yourself and say,

[1:27:44] what am I afraid of loving?

[1:27:46] What am I afraid of changing? How am I

[1:27:48] afraid of being? And start there. I ask

[1:27:52] you to start there.

[1:27:55] I

[1:27:56] start with you thinking

[1:27:59] I truly am a am a am a channel for

[1:28:02] grace, and begin to just see the world

[1:28:06] around you

[1:28:07] as a field of grace. And if you can live

[1:28:09] just in that, by that alone, you've

[1:28:12] changed more than you realize. And one

[1:28:14] of the true things about a mystical law

[1:28:19] is that

[1:28:22] a mystic knows the force of a prayer

[1:28:24] changes the world. The ego doesn't get

[1:28:26] that, but it's the most unreasonable

[1:28:29] truth

[1:28:30] that is a great truth.

[1:28:33] And with that, I am going to lead you

[1:28:34] in.

[1:28:36] So, take a deep breath and listen to me.

[1:28:39] I don't

[1:28:40] do like relaxation spa healing. So,

[1:28:43] don't go getting comfortable. It's late.

[1:28:47] It's late.

[1:28:51] I want you uncomfortable.

[1:28:53] I appreciate you staying

[1:28:57] very much.

[1:29:02] Take a deep breath. Close your eyes.

[1:29:07] Oh. [sighs]

[1:29:12] Okay.

[1:29:16] Go deep within your heart.

[1:29:19] Picture yourself crossing

[1:29:23] a drawbridge behind your heart.

[1:29:26] A drawbridge that goes to a castle.

[1:29:30] A deep medieval interior castle.

[1:29:34] And the drawbridge closes.

[1:29:37] And it's totally silent. Completely and

[1:29:41] totally silent.

[1:29:44] And you

[1:29:46] hear a voice.

[1:29:49] And the voice says, "Be still and know

[1:29:52] you are with God."

[1:29:54] "Be still and know you are with God."

[1:29:58] Here

[1:30:00] in this silent, beautiful place, God

[1:30:03] says to you, "I've been waiting for a

[1:30:04] long time to be with you in this

[1:30:06] silence."

[1:30:10] And imagine the embrace of the divine

[1:30:14] as this force grabs you and says, "I

[1:30:18] have a question for you. Just one

[1:30:20] question. One question and it will

[1:30:22] change your life. One question, a deep,

[1:30:25] deep question."

[1:30:28] And from deep within, God says to you,

[1:30:30] "What have I given you in this life

[1:30:32] that's too much for you to carry? What

[1:30:35] have I given to you that's too much for

[1:30:38] you? What have I given to you?

[1:30:41] Tell me what I've given to you

[1:30:43] that is too much for you and give it

[1:30:46] back to me.

[1:30:48] Give it back to me. Release it to me.

[1:30:52] Release it to me."

[1:31:05] And the divine says to you,

[1:31:08] "I place

[1:31:11] my hand on your head

[1:31:14] and the grace of God and the grace of

[1:31:16] heaven go through you

[1:31:20] and release

[1:31:22] the diseases

[1:31:23] that assault your body.

[1:31:27] The suffering that assaults your heart.

[1:31:31] The pressure that assaults your mind.

[1:31:34] The grief that assaults your soul.

[1:31:38] The pain that ravages your body.

[1:31:42] The grace melts through you

[1:31:45] and you surrender it unto heaven.

[1:31:48] You release it. No one is at fault for

[1:31:50] your pain.

[1:31:53] You punish no one for it.

[1:31:55] You simply let it go.

[1:32:00] God grant me the grace

[1:32:03] of reverence for my life that I may be

[1:32:05] grateful that I am

[1:32:08] alive.

[1:32:09] God grant me the grace of piety that I

[1:32:12] may see every human being as divine.

[1:32:15] Grant me the grace

[1:32:17] of understanding that I may see beauty

[1:32:21] and truth

[1:32:23] in my relationships with others. Grant

[1:32:25] me the grace of fortitude that I may

[1:32:28] have courage when you call my name.

[1:32:32] Grant me the grace of counsel

[1:32:34] that I may hear you

[1:32:37] when you guide me.

[1:32:39] Grant me the grace of knowledge that I

[1:32:42] may understand the higher meaning of

[1:32:45] things.

[1:32:46] Grant me the grace of wisdom that I may

[1:32:49] see clearly the choices I need to make.

[1:32:54] Let nothing, dear God, disturb the

[1:32:56] silence of the peace in my heart with

[1:32:59] you.

[1:33:01] Amen.

[1:33:05] Take a deep breath.

[1:33:10] And come on back.

[1:33:17] What a lovely time.

[1:33:19] I want to thank you and um

[1:33:23] >> [applause]

[1:33:23] >> You were wonderful. Thank you so much.

[1:33:26] Thank you so much. It was a pleasure

[1:33:29] pleasure being with you. Thank you for

[1:33:31] staying.

In this Hay House talk, Caroline Myss argues that genuine healing is a mystical transformation rather than only a mental or logical process. She draws on her book Defy Gravity to discuss forgiveness, the hidden privileges of suffering, and the seven shadows and seven graces. The talk ends with a guided prayer for release.
Myss uses the Latin root of gravity, gravis, meaning to give weight, to contrast it with mystical experience, which she describes as taking weight out of air and out of the soul. She says mystical consciousness lets a person master living in present time. The title Defy Gravity refers to this state.
Myss describes overhearing a mother on her 92nd birthday being pressed by her daughter to recall a difficult marriage. The mother instead asks, remind me what I loved about your father. The daughter recalls small kindnesses, and the mother says she loved him too, and that is all she wanted to know.
According to the talk's description, the graces include reverence, understanding, fortitude, counsel, knowledge, and wisdom, with a seventh that the talk pairs with the seven shadows. Myss presents them as a working vocabulary for choices in life. She frames each as something to be taken up fully.
Myss describes levels of explanation, from biological facts to emotional reasons to symbolic meaning, and says each level has validity. The problem arises when reason is treated as the final word, because a logical explanation can describe a wound precisely without freeing the person inside it. Healing, in her view, requires a further step beyond reasoning.
Yes. The final section of the talk, beginning around the 1 hour 29 minute mark, guides listeners through a prayer designed to help them surrender what has become too heavy to carry. Myss asks them to breathe deeply, close their eyes, and ask to see clearly the choices they need to make.
