Why Choosing Yourself Isn't Selfish: Lessons From Burnout

She got out of bed, and her legs would not hold her. The floor came up to meet her, and for a woman who had spent years running a corporate communications department, earning a graduate degree in spiritual psychology, and raising children, the fall was not a metaphor. It was a body stopping the machine. In a recent episode of her Women Awakening series, titled "I Choose Me," Cynthia James returned to that morning as the emotional center of a larger argument: that a woman often does not notice she has stopped choosing herself until something forces the issue. Her case rests on a few connected ideas. Choosing yourself begins with remembering your inherent value. It requires reclaiming your own authority from other people's expectations. And it includes setting boundaries that she describes not as selfishness but as survival.

What does it mean to choose yourself, really?

James frames the phrase as a practice with layers rather than a single decision. In the episode she starts at the foundation, and she is specific about where she thinks the work begins. "Choosing you has some layers. The first one is remembering that you choose you because you matter." (Cynthia James, "I Choose Me," Women Awakening, 1:50) She moves from there to the idea that a person is here for a reason, that her gifts are hers to deliver in a way no one else can, and that she gets to decide how she moves forward.

The second layer is the one that tends to cost people the most. James describes it as reclaiming authority: stopping the habit of waiting for permission or validation, making choices that line up with your values, and refusing to put yourself last because someone has suggested that doing so is the only acceptable option. "Choosing yourself means remembering that life is yours to lead," she says, "not someone else's expectations to fulfill." The distinction matters. Plenty of people can name their values. Far fewer act on them when a boss, a partner, or an extended family has a stake in their availability.

She is candid that this was not easy for her. The transcript gives the origin in a single line: "I came from a family where we were all taught to be caregivers." (Cynthia James, "I Choose Me," Women Awakening, 3:24) Her account of that training is worth taking seriously because it describes a pattern many readers will recognize. Even when part of you resists, she says, the fear of judgment, of being ostracized, of being punished for not giving "all of yourself" keeps the old arrangement in place. "I wanted people to love me," she says. "I wanted people to accept me. I wanted people to honor me. And so, what I learned was everybody else first."

Why did a successful woman end up on the floor?

The collapse makes sense once you see the calendar James was keeping. She describes a life stacked with obligations and very little margin: corporate communications work that meant long hours, a master's program in spiritual psychology that came with a heavy stack of papers and reading, and the everyday management of a household and children. "What I found myself doing is trying to be a superwoman," she says. (Cynthia James, "I Choose Me," Women Awakening, 6:00) Sleep shrank. Healthy eating shrank. The reading and the errands kept growing.

Then came the morning she could not walk. The first response from doctors was medication aimed at her muscles, which she found dulling rather than helpful. A chiropractor offered a different frame. He identified the problem as sciatica and pointed to something more basic about her routine. Her body was not malfunctioning at random, he suggested. It was responding to how hard she was pushing it.

"You know, you got to rest. You're trying to push your body and your body is telling you it won't go." (Cynthia James, "I Choose Me," Women Awakening, 7:31, recounting her chiropractor's words)

He also told her something she says reframed everything. Realigning the sciatica would help in the short term, but if she kept living the same way, another part of her body would eventually give out. James recalls the realization that followed. She had been trying to serve, support, and honor everyone around her while depleting herself, and her body was now refusing to continue. "Wow, that was such an incredible understanding for me," she says in the episode.

There is a useful distinction in her account between what she calls radical self-care and the spa-day version most people picture. She is explicit that she is not talking about bubble baths. She means sleep, water, movement, and "honoring what your soul is asking for." The reasoning is practical as well as spiritual. "You cannot consistently give your best from exhaustion," she says. "Choosing yourself replenishes the energy that allows you to serve others from abundance instead of depletion." Her argument is that self-care is the source of capacity, not a withdrawal from it.

What happens when you stop shrinking to fit other people?

James connects choosing yourself to the idea of a bigger life, and she is pointed about what the alternative costs. When a person stays small to meet other people's needs, she says, originality, uniqueness, and brilliance go dormant. "When you stop shrinking to fit other person's needs and desires," she says, "your authentic gifts merge and emerge." The phrasing is rich with the idea of becoming, something inside a person coming into view after long suppression.

She is also realistic about the social consequences. People who are used to you taking care of them, she notes, will often push back when you change. That is the part of the argument many readers will feel most sharply, because the pushback is rarely dramatic. It can look like disappointment, guilt, or a sudden pile of requests. James offers a clear way to think about it. Boundaries exist for your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. When others rebel against that, she says, one of two things tends to follow: they leave, or they come to understand that the change serves your health and then celebrate it.

She uses her own career as the evidence. She describes several moments when she had to decide to put herself first in order to become the author and coach she is now, and she mentions leading groups on pilgrimages. The arc she sketches is not that setting limits makes life smaller. It is that the limits created the room her work needed.

How do you set a boundary without guilt?

The episode's most practical moment is its treatment of refusal. James lists "learning that no is a complete sentence" as a chapter of the video, and she tells the story of turning down paid work from two organizations she loved, a decision the episode description ties to her current habit of guarding her own worth as carefully as she guards her mission. She does not present saying no as a cold act. She presents it as a way of protecting the capacity to say yes to the right things.

Her broader message follows the same logic. Ask honestly whether you are taking care of yourself or putting others and other things first. Notice the dreams and desires you carry, and recognize that living them requires a body and a schedule that can hold them. She closes with an invitation to see choosing yourself not as indulgence but as the foundation of a life that expresses what you are here to do.

Where to go from here

If the story of the floor and the chiropractor landed for you, the most useful next step is small and concrete. Look at one week of your own calendar and ask the question James poses: which of these commitments are chosen, and which are simply inherited from a habit of taking care of everyone else first? You do not need to resign from anything to begin. Protecting an hour of sleep, saying one honest no, or letting one request wait until you have actually rested are all ways of making the choice visible.

To hear James tell the story in her own voice, watch the full "I Choose Me" episode on the Women Awakening channel. Her book of the same name, which she says grew out of years of coaching women who struggled with self-love and self-care, is available through her website at https://www.cynthiajames.net/. The core lesson she leaves is simple and demanding: rest is not the reward for finishing the work. For a woman who has been pushing for years, rest may be the thing that lets the work, and the bigger life she is building, continue at all.

[0:00] Choosing yourself means

[0:03] remembering that life is yours to lead,

[0:06] not someone else's expectations to

[0:09] fulfill.

[0:10] I want you to know that that was hard

[0:12] for me.

[0:14] Because I came from a family where we

[0:17] were all taught to be caregivers. We

[0:19] were all taught to take care of other

[0:22] people first, whether it was in a work

[0:24] environment [music] or in a home

[0:26] environment. And because that was the

[0:29] messaging, even though there was a part

[0:32] that didn't want to do it,

[0:34] you were afraid of being judged. You

[0:37] were afraid of being ostracized or

[0:39] punished in some way because you weren't

[0:42] giving up all of yourself.

[0:49] I wrote a book a few years ago and it

[0:52] was called I Choose Me,

[0:54] The Art of Being a Phenomenally

[0:56] Successful

[0:59] Woman at Home and at so many of my

[1:02] clients, so many people in my workshops

[1:06] and in my classes were really struggling

[1:09] with with love, self-love, and

[1:11] self-care.

[1:13] And I was very grateful that it served

[1:16] so many people. And then it became

[1:18] quiet, but recently

[1:20] that energy, that frequency has come

[1:23] back into my life with a fury.

[1:26] Clients, people in my community are

[1:29] saying, "I don't know how to take care

[1:31] of myself with all of the stuff that's

[1:34] happening. I don't know how to honor

[1:37] myself. I don't know how to be present

[1:41] when I feel so disconnected. I feel so

[1:45] non-supported."

[1:48] But here's the thing I want you to know.

[1:50] Choosing you has some layers. The first

[1:54] one is remembering

[1:56] that you choose you because you matter.

[1:59] That you're on this planet for an

[2:00] important reason.

[2:02] Otherwise, you wouldn't be here.

[2:04] You have gifts that you can deliver that

[2:06] no one else can deliver the way you

[2:08] deliver them.

[2:10] And then you get to understand that you

[2:12] get to decide how you want to move

[2:13] forward.

[2:15] You get to become the CEO of your own

[2:18] world, right?

[2:20] You get to understand that you are in

[2:22] the process of creating a legacy

[2:26] that is in high service in a myriad of

[2:28] ways.

[2:31] Because choosing you

[2:33] really is about understanding your

[2:35] inherent value.

[2:38] Because when you do that, you stop

[2:40] waiting for permission or validation.

[2:43] And you really reclaim your own

[2:45] authority and you make choices that

[2:48] align with your values, what's important

[2:50] to you.

[2:52] And you move beyond other people's

[2:54] expectations, right? And you stop

[2:56] putting yourself

[2:58] last because someone says you will be

[3:01] called selfish if you do.

[3:04] Choosing yourself means

[3:07] remembering that life is yours to lead.

[3:10] Not someone else's expectations to

[3:12] fulfill.

[3:14] I want you to know that that that was

[3:16] hard for me.

[3:18] Because I came from a family where we

[3:21] were all taught to be caregivers. We

[3:24] were all taught to take care of other

[3:26] people first. Whether it was in a work

[3:29] environment or in a home environment.

[3:32] And because that was the messaging, even

[3:35] though there was a part that didn't want

[3:37] to do it,

[3:38] you were afraid of being judged. You

[3:41] were afraid of being ostracized or

[3:44] punished in some way because you weren't

[3:46] giving up all of yourself.

[3:49] For me, that was a really hard thing to

[3:52] get over

[3:54] because I wanted people to love me. I

[3:56] wanted people to accept me. I wanted

[3:58] people to honor me.

[4:01] And so, what I learned was everybody

[4:04] else first.

[4:07] What I know now

[4:09] is self-care

[4:11] is the most important thing you can do

[4:14] because it creates the energy to live a

[4:17] better life, a bigger life.

[4:20] And when I'm talking about self-care, I

[4:22] I mean, I'm not talking about bathtubs

[4:25] and just, you know, bubble baths and

[4:26] going to the spa. I'm talking about

[4:29] radical self-care.

[4:30] Are you getting enough sleep? Are you

[4:32] drinking enough water? Uh are you

[4:35] working out? Are you honoring what your

[4:38] soul is asking for? Because when you do

[4:41] that, what happens is your health and

[4:44] well-being rise.

[4:46] Your energy and your frequency rise.

[4:50] And then you get to to operate at your

[4:52] optimal level.

[4:54] Cuz what you're doing

[4:56] is you are training yourself to be your

[4:59] best self.

[5:02] What I had to learn and understand is

[5:05] that self-care is not a luxury.

[5:09] You know, it it it's how I honor myself.

[5:12] It's how I lead my life. It's how I

[5:15] nurture myself.

[5:17] Because that radical self-care handles

[5:20] all areas. Your physical, your

[5:23] emotional, your mental, your spiritual,

[5:25] even your financial.

[5:27] Because when you are in that space of

[5:29] dedication to your care you become more

[5:33] creative.

[5:34] You become more resilient.

[5:37] More present

[5:39] and more impactful.

[5:42] This is what I want you to know. You You

[5:44] cannot consistently give your best from

[5:47] exhaustion.

[5:49] Choosing yourself replenishes the energy

[5:52] that allows you to serve others

[5:55] from abundance instead of depletion.

[6:00] I was working in corporate America and

[6:03] and corporate communications and I was

[6:04] going to school to get a master's degree

[6:07] in spiritual psychology and I was, you

[6:09] know, raising children. And so there was

[6:11] a lot on my plate. And what I found

[6:15] myself doing is trying to be a

[6:17] superwoman.

[6:19] Make sure my kids were taken care of. Do

[6:21] all the shopping. Handle all the

[6:23] housework. Go to job to my work working

[6:25] long hours to make sure that, you know,

[6:28] my department was uplifted. And then I'd

[6:31] go to school and I'd have all these

[6:33] papers and all this reading to do.

[6:35] Which didn't leave a lot of time for

[6:37] sleep.

[6:39] Which didn't leave a lot of time for me

[6:41] to eat

[6:43] healthily.

[6:45] And so um one day I was um

[6:50] getting out of bed and I fell on the

[6:53] floor. I

[6:54] I couldn't walk.

[6:56] And I thought, "What what's happened to

[6:58] me?" So I went to the doctor and they

[7:01] were trying to give me all kinds of

[7:02] drugs for my muscles and everything like

[7:04] that and it was it was awful because all

[7:07] it did was make me kind of dopey.

[7:09] And I was introduced to this

[7:12] this chiropractor.

[7:14] And I'm telling him what's happening and

[7:16] he said, "Oh,

[7:18] this is your sciatica. You know, um that

[7:22] that's what's given out." And he

[7:23] explains what it is and and how I can

[7:26] best benefit. But the thing that was the

[7:28] most important about what he said to me

[7:30] was,

[7:31] "You know, you got to rest.

[7:33] You're trying to push your body and your

[7:34] body is telling you it won't go.

[7:38] So, we can work on the sciatica and get

[7:41] it, you know, back in alignment. But, if

[7:44] you keep doing what you're doing the way

[7:45] that you're doing it, some part of your

[7:48] body will give out again.

[7:51] And so, I had to think, "Wow,

[7:54] here I am trying to give to everybody

[7:57] else, serve everybody else, honor

[7:59] everybody else,

[8:02] but I'm doing it and I'm depleted and

[8:04] exhausted.

[8:06] And so, my body is rebelling.

[8:10] Wow, that was That was such an

[8:12] incredible

[8:14] understanding for me.

[8:16] So, I don't know where you are and

[8:17] what's going on in your life, but I

[8:19] think it's time maybe for you to just

[8:21] pause and look, "Am I taking care of

[8:23] myself, or am I putting others and other

[8:26] things

[8:27] first?"

[8:28] Because here's the thing.

[8:30] We all have dreams and we have have

[8:33] desires. I think we're here to do big

[8:35] things on this planet.

[8:37] But, you cannot live a bigger life if

[8:39] you're not choosing yourself.

[8:42] Because what happens is when you're not

[8:44] choosing yourself, you shut down your

[8:46] originality, your uniqueness, your

[8:49] brilliance.

[8:51] And you you don't take ownership of your

[8:53] greatness and your power and your

[8:54] brilliance.

[8:56] Because you are called here to do that

[8:59] today, now, to live your big life, to

[9:02] build live full out. Live out loud,

[9:05] right?

[9:06] And really

[9:08] be the leader in your life.

[9:10] Be the strategist of your life, the CEO

[9:13] of your life.

[9:15] When you stop shrinking

[9:19] to fit other person's needs and desires,

[9:21] your authentic gifts merge and emerge.

[9:25] Something in yourself becomes new.

[9:30] It's finally allowing the person you've

[9:32] always been to take lead.

[9:35] Now, that's the good news. The

[9:37] interesting news is not everybody will

[9:38] love it. If people are used to you doing

[9:41] things a certain way and taking care of

[9:44] them and putting them first, well,

[9:48] they will rebel when you change.

[9:52] But here's the thing.

[9:55] Boundaries are for your health and

[9:57] well-being.

[9:58] Your mental, emotional, physical,

[10:00] spiritual well-being.

[10:03] And one of two things will happen if

[10:05] people rebel it with your change. They

[10:08] will either decide to leave,

[10:11] or they will understand that what you

[10:13] are doing is for your health and

[10:15] well-being and they will rejoice in

[10:17] that.

[10:19] There were a couple of times in my life

[10:20] where I had to change and decide to take

[10:23] care of me first

[10:26] in order to live a bigger life, in order

[10:28] to become the author that I am today and

[10:31] the coach that I am today and to take

[10:32] people on pilgrimages.

[10:35] And I had to learn that no was a

[10:36] complete sentence. That I could actually

[10:39] say, "I'm sorry, I cannot do that

[10:43] at this moment. I I have other things

[10:46] that are priorities."

[10:47] Some people got really mad at me.

[10:50] Some people had things to say that were

[10:53] unkind.

[10:54] But I got to tell you, by choosing me

[10:57] and deciding that I was going to put my

[10:59] energy into the gifts that I have, wow,

[11:03] I got to tell you, something beautiful

[11:05] occurred.

[11:06] You know, I am now the author of six

[11:08] books, right?

[11:10] Best-selling and award-winning books.

[11:13] And that's because I decided to bring my

[11:16] gifts to the planet.

[11:19] Because those gifts, whether it's books

[11:22] or my coaching or whatever, I get to be

[11:24] in service to other to remind them of

[11:27] how powerful they are, how dynamic they

[11:29] are, how mighty they are, right? Because

[11:33] the world doesn't need another

[11:35] imitation.

[11:37] A world The world needs your

[11:39] originality, your courage, your

[11:42] authentic voice,

[11:44] your unique abilities.

[11:47] I was thinking the other day about the

[11:50] fact that

[11:52] the dreams that we all have are really

[11:54] big ideas that want to

[11:58] manifest.

[12:00] But those things can't manifest if you

[12:02] are not choosing yourself and choosing

[12:04] your life.

[12:06] And so that means honoring your worth.

[12:09] You know, I recently got some requests

[12:11] to to do a lot of work for two

[12:14] organizations actually.

[12:16] Didn't want to pay me.

[12:18] Wanted me to give up my time because I

[12:20] loved their mission. And I do. I love

[12:22] their missions. But here's the thing. If

[12:25] you keep giving yourself away without

[12:28] honoring what you're worth, you are

[12:30] telling the universe and you're telling

[12:32] people, you know,

[12:34] "You don't have to value me." Right?

[12:38] And so I'm in a place in my life it's

[12:40] like, yes, I volunteer in places, I show

[12:42] up and I give service, but I also have a

[12:46] rate

[12:47] to do the work that I do in the world,

[12:49] that I've trained for, that I've

[12:50] educated for.

[12:53] And so I want to use my unique

[12:55] brilliance to support others, but I want

[12:57] there to be a law of circulation where

[12:59] they're supporting me.

[13:00] See, cuz from that place I get to

[13:02] succeed, you get to succeed. You become

[13:04] a healthier leader, a more authentic

[13:07] partner, you become a strong creator,

[13:11] and a greater contributor to the world.

[13:14] So I was thinking,

[13:16] how would I want to say this to you in a

[13:18] way that that you could understand and

[13:21] it could maybe support you?

[13:23] Choose yourself.

[13:26] Honor your worth.

[13:29] Care for your well-being.

[13:32] Raise your energy and frequency.

[13:36] Lead authentically.

[13:39] Play bigger.

[13:41] Leave a legacy.

[13:44] What I want you to know is I'm very

[13:46] clear

[13:47] that every single one of us on the

[13:50] planet at this moment is here to

[13:52] navigate the strange energies.

[13:55] And to to stand in the power and the

[13:57] presence that we are, because we are all

[13:59] masterpieces in the making. We're all

[14:01] dynamic. We're all mighty. We're all

[14:04] extraordinary beings.

[14:07] And some of us are here to do big things

[14:09] and some of us are here to do smaller

[14:11] things and it doesn't even matter.

[14:14] Because every person

[14:16] gifts every person's gifts

[14:20] are important and essential.

[14:22] So what I want to say to you is choose

[14:24] you. Love you. Honor you. Nurture you.

[14:28] Care for you. You're important.

In her Women Awakening episode 'I Choose Me,' James describes choosing yourself as a practice with layers: remembering your inherent value, reclaiming your authority from others' expectations, and making choices aligned with your values. She frames it as the way a person stops putting herself last and begins living her own life.
James argues that boundaries protect physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. She says that without them, a person keeps depleting herself until her body or energy gives out, as hers did when she collapsed and could not walk.
She got out of bed and fell to the floor, unable to walk, after years of juggling corporate communications work, a graduate program in spiritual psychology, and raising her children with little rest. A chiropractor diagnosed sciatica and told her she had to rest, because her body would keep giving out if she continued at the same pace.
James distinguishes radical self-care from bubble baths and spa visits. She means practical basics such as enough sleep, drinking enough water, exercise, and honoring what your soul is asking for, which she says raises health, energy, and frequency.
Based on James's approach, begin by asking whether you are taking care of yourself or putting others and other things first. Small steps, like protecting sleep or saying one honest no, make the choice visible; James also notes that people may push back at first, and that some will come to accept the change.
James includes 'learning that no is a complete sentence' as one of the video's chapters, framing refusal as a way to protect your capacity to say yes to what matters. In the episode she describes turning down paid work from two organizations she loved in order to guard her own worth.
