Heart-Opening Yoga for Seated and Standing Practice

Da Cindy Bartz - Yoga & Wellness

Most heart-opening yoga asks you to do one thing: lift the chest, open the front of the body, and let the breath reach the places that tend to close up over a day of sitting. Cindy Bartz's 27-minute practice, titled "Love Yourself, Love Your Body," does that work through a single repeated gesture rather than a parade of poses. You inhale and raise your arms, you exhale and send that energy down into the center of the chest, and you repeat it until the whole session has become a loop of breath and intention. The practice can be done seated in a chair or standing, it moves through cow and cat, twists, arm sweeps, forward folds, a wide stance, and a warrior-style reach, and it keeps returning to a short mantra about the heart. For a reader who has never rolled out a mat, it is a useful model of how a heart-focused class can be built without strain. For a reader who already practices, it is a clear example of how breath can carry a sequence.

Why does this sequence begin in a chair?

The practice does not open on the floor or in a standing pose. It opens with the body settled: "let's sit comfortably in a chair," Bartz says at the start, asking the practitioner to come to the front of the seat, let the feet be firmly planted, and place the hands in the lap or palms down on the thighs, "whatever is comfortable for you" (0:26). That instruction sets a principle the rest of the class will keep: the posture is whatever your body can actually do that day.

Three slow breaths follow, a deep inhale through the nose and a release through an open mouth, before she asks the practitioner to stop controlling the breath and let it become natural. This is a common opening move in breath-led yoga, and it matters here because the whole session depends on the breath being steady enough to follow. She then introduces the mantra for the day, "my heart sings with new inspiration and enthusiasm," which the practitioner repeats three times (1:56). The words are spoken as an intention, not a belief to be defended. The class follows the breath as it moves into the lungs and then into the heart center.

Before any movement begins, she asks for one thing to be grateful for. "One thing that puts joy in your heart and a smile on your face," she says (2:57). It is a small, practical prompt, and it gives the session a reason to feel warm before the body is asked to do anything.

What is the breath-to-heart gesture, and why does it repeat?

The core of the practice is a simple cycle. Standing with the feet pressed into the floor and the crown of the head lifted, you inhale and raise the arms overhead. As you exhale, you draw that energy down into the heart center and let the hands return to your sides. She describes gathering energy in the palms as the arms rise, then sending it into the chest on the way down, and asks the practitioner to visualize the energy in the mind's eye (3:53 onward). The cycle repeats several times, and each repetition is a small rehearsal of the same idea: move up, gather, come down, and place.

The repetition is what makes this sequence work as a heart-focused practice rather than a generic stretch. A movement done three or four times with breath and visualization begins to feel like a ritual, and the body learns the rhythm. For a student who finds long holds uncomfortable, this kind of short, repeated gesture can be a gentler entry point to the same chest-opening territory.

How does the sequence open the chest without forcing it?

From the standing setup, the practice moves into the chest-opening work. Hands go behind the back, either interlaced or, if seated, holding onto the back of the chair. On an inhale, the chest lifts toward the ceiling and the shoulder blades draw together. She asks for a couple of deep breaths in that position, "the opening in your chest," before releasing (4:30 region of the class).

The sun salutations that follow are adapted for seated or standing practice. Inhale, raise the arms. Exhale, fold forward. Inhale into cow, exhale into cat, then return to a flat back. The rhythm is slow and each movement is tied to a breath. Cow and cat move the spine through gentle flexion and extension, and the cycle is repeated three times before the practitioner moves on.

Then come the twists. Interlacing the fingers and pressing the palms toward the ceiling, the arms extend, the body turns left, comes back through center, turns right, and comes back again. Each turn is anchored to the breath: the inhale brings you through center, the exhale carries you into the turn.

What do the arm gestures do?

The middle of the practice is the most visual section, and it is built on arm movements she describes with images rather than anatomy. Palms come together so they face the body, "think of deer antlers here." The palms then slide outward, and the hands move "like windshield wipers" while the fingers open. The arms come out into a T shape with the shoulders kept away from the ears and the thumbs turned down toward the ground. From there, the arms move behind the body, the palms turn in, and the practitioner scoops the energy up and brings it back to the chest (8:00 to 9:30 in the video).

She repeats the sequence three times, each time using the same cues. The repetition is the teaching. Each pass refines the same shape: open the arms, open the chest behind, scoop, and return. For a reader thinking about posture, the shoulder cues are the ones worth noticing. The arms stay in a line that keeps the shoulders from crowding the neck.

"No struggling, no forcing. Think of opening the whole front side of your body." (Bartz, in the video, around 11:27)

That line matters more than it might seem. For a practitioner who is working toward flexibility or who has spent years in a body that resists, the instruction to avoid effort is the difference between a session that builds comfort and one that builds injury. The channel's description frames its work around baby boomers and "reversing osteoporosis," and the cues throughout this class read the same way: keep the spine aligned, work with the body that shows up, and let the breath set the pace.

How does the forward fold stay safe?

The practice includes a forward fold that is handled with particular care. From the chest opening, the hands come to the thighs just above the knees, and the practitioner exhales into a forward fold. The head, neck, and shoulders are relaxed. On the inhale, the abdomen and lower back expand. On the exhale, the body releases and returns the head and neck into alignment with the spine before the inhale brings you up with a flat back.

A second fold, done with the hands at the lower back, comes with an instruction to stay within what is appropriate: "only come as far as what's appropriate for you" (12:49 region). This is the kind of permission a class built for mixed ages and abilities needs to give. A forward fold is a place where many practitioners push past comfort, and the cue removes the pressure to go deeper than the day allows.

What is the pillar of light, and how does the class close?

After the folds, the practice returns to the breath with cleansing breaths. Hands go to the sides, the arms rise on an inhale, and the energy is drawn into the heart on the exhale. Then the arms rise with the palms facing each other, "as if you're hugging a pillar of light" (14:06). The image is the most sustained visualization in the class: the practitioner presses the palms outward and sends the energy into the universe, then draws it back in, moving through rounded arms out to the sides and up toward the heavens.

Standing with feet wide, the practice moves into a side-reaching warrior-style position. The arms form a T, the body leans into the bend, and the breath guides the reach. The class ends standing, grounded with both feet planted, and the final visualization is of light surrounding the body: peace all around, love flowing in, and the heart healing with each exhale (around 22:00 to 24:00 in the video). She ends where she started, returning to the mantra, "my heart sings with new inspiration and enthusiasm," and asking for one deep breath that carries that love out into the universe (25:49).

Who is this practice for?

The sequence is built for flexibility and comfort rather than intensity. Its strongest feature is that every position has a seated alternative, every stretch is paired with a breath, and the cues repeatedly give permission to stop. The structure is also easy to repeat at home: the same breath-to-heart gesture recurs through the session, so a practitioner can learn the rhythm once and use it as a short daily practice. Those who want to go further can use the description's links to the channel's other material on qigong and bone health, but the heart-opening session stands on its own.

Where to go from here

If you want to try this sequence, start seated. Keep the mantra simple, and use the gratitude prompt before you move. Do the arms-up, breath-to-heart cycle three times, and pay attention to where the chest feels open and where it feels stuck. Follow the cues on the forward fold and stop where the body says stop. If you want more structure, the full 27-minute video by Cindy Bartz is the source for this walkthrough, and the channel's description points to additional guides on flexibility, qigong, and bone health. The practice is short enough to fit into a morning or a lunch break, and it asks for only one thing at the start: a comfortable chair and the willingness to breathe.

[3:35] all right standing nice and tall

[3:38] pressing the feet down into the ground

[3:40] and extending up through the crown of

[3:42] the head

[3:43] well inhale raise the arms up overhead

[3:46] and as you exhale sending that energy

[3:50] down into your heart center and let's

[3:53] repeat that a couple more times so hands

[3:56] at your side inhale raising the hands up

[3:59] gathering energy in the palms and as you

[4:02] exhale sending the energy into the heart

[4:05] visualize it in your mind's eye as you

[4:08] inhale raising the arms up and exhale

[4:13] bringing that energy into the heart and

[4:16] then bringing the hands down to your

[4:19] side we'll start opening the heart by

[4:23] bringing the hands behind you you can

[4:25] either interlace the hands behind you or

[4:27] if you're seated you can hold on to the

[4:30] back of the chair take a nice deep

[4:32] breath in as you start to open the chest

[4:36] looking up towards the ceiling bringing

[4:39] the shoulder blades in together a couple

[4:42] nice deep breaths here you know the

[4:47] opening in your chest

[4:53] [Music]

[4:58] and then gently releasing that again as

[5:02] you inhale raise the arms up and as you

[5:05] exhale sending the energy into your

[5:07] heart center bring your hands to your

[5:11] sides and we're going to do a few Sun

[5:14] Salutations and again you can do these

[5:16] seated or standing

[5:18] inhale raise the arms up exhale forward

[5:24] fold

[5:25] as you inhale coming into a cow position

[5:30] and as you exhale coming into cat and

[5:36] then coming to a flat back as you inhale

[5:39] raise the arms up exhale bringing the

[5:42] hands into your heart center and we'll

[5:45] repeat that so inhale raising the arms

[5:48] up exhale forward fold inhale into a cow

[5:57] exhale into cat coming to a flat back

[6:01] inhale raise the arms up exhale into

[6:05] heart center and we'll do that one more

[6:08] time inhale raising the arms up exhale

[6:12] forward fold inhale into our Kyle exhale

[6:18] into cat coming to a flat back inhale

[6:24] raising the arms up exhale bringing the

[6:28] hands into heart center and now raising

[6:32] the arms up interlace the fingers and

[6:35] press the palms up towards the ceiling

[6:39] extending the arms and as you exhale

[6:42] let's turn to the left

[6:46] nice deep inhalation and exhalation

[6:57] and on your next inhalation turning back

[7:00] through Center and then moving to the

[7:03] right knee inhale and exhale then go

[7:08] lifting the chest bringing the crown of

[7:13] the head up towards ceiling

[7:19] and on your next inhalation coming back

[7:22] to Center and then as you exhale

[7:24] floating the arms down by your side

[7:30] and now let's bring the hands together

[7:33] so that the palms are facing you think

[7:36] of deer antlers here and let's slowly

[7:41] bring the palms out facing me and then

[7:45] bringing the hands out like windshield

[7:48] wipers and bringing the fingers out to

[7:51] the side arms are in a T position

[7:55] shoulders away from the ears bring the

[7:59] thumbs down towards the ground and now

[8:02] bringing the hands behind you opening up

[8:05] the chest turn the palms in and now as

[8:12] you inhale scooping the energy up and

[8:15] bringing the hands so that they're

[8:16] facing you and we'll do that a few more

[8:19] times

[8:20] so first palms come out facing me

[8:24] windshield wipers opening the hands and

[8:28] the arms gentle tug here on the

[8:32] fingertips shoulders away from the ears

[8:37] thumbs come down towards the Earth now

[8:43] turning the palms in as you inhale raise

[8:46] the arms up

[8:50] bring the palms facing out towards me

[8:54] bring the arms out to the sides and a

[8:57] tea formation

[9:00] thumbs come down towards the earth bring

[9:04] the hands behind the opening the chest

[9:08] now turning the hands and scooping the

[9:12] energy and bringing it back up into the

[9:14] heart center and we'll repeat that two

[9:17] more times turning the hands out

[9:20] bringing the arms out to the side into a

[9:23] tea formation

[9:26] bring the thumbs down towards the earth

[9:29] bringing the hands behind you opening

[9:33] the chest scooping the hands up bringing

[9:38] that energy into the heart center and

[9:41] one more time palms come out facing me

[9:45] bring the arms out to your side into a

[9:48] tea formation

[9:51] thumbs come down towards the earth

[9:53] bringing the hands behind you opening

[9:56] the chest scooping the hands up bringing

[10:01] that energy into the heart center and

[10:04] now slowly bringing the hands down to

[10:06] your side now bring your hands behind

[10:11] you and place your hands pointing the

[10:15] fingers down towards the earth on each

[10:18] side of the lower back and then as you

[10:22] inhale start to bring the elbows in

[10:24] towards each other opening the chest

[10:28] you're sitting or standing up nice and

[10:31] tall

[10:34] and on your next inhalation start

[10:38] opening the chest opening the front body

[10:43] bringing the head up towards the ceiling

[10:46] but the head and the neck should stay in

[10:49] alignment with the rest of the spine no

[10:53] struggling no forcing think of opening

[10:58] the whole front side of your body nice

[11:05] deep breath in and out here new next

[11:16] exhalation slowly coming out of that and

[11:19] bringing the hands to the thighs right

[11:23] above the knees take a nice deep breath

[11:27] in and as you exhale forward fold relax

[11:34] the head the neck the shoulders the

[11:39] hands as you exhale releasing any

[11:48] tension in the body as you inhale feel

[11:56] the expansion of the abdomen and the

[11:59] lower back and as you exhale letting go

[12:10] and bringing your head and neck in

[12:13] alignment with the rest of the spine as

[12:15] you inhale come up out of that with a

[12:18] flat back standing nice and tall or

[12:22] sitting nice and tall and now

[12:25] interlacing your hands behind you this

[12:29] is not possible then again just place

[12:31] the hands at each side of the lower back

[12:36] we're opening up here the chest bring

[12:39] the shoulder blades in towards each

[12:41] other sit up nice and tall take a nice

[12:45] deep breath in and as you exhale another

[12:48] forward fold here keep the head and neck

[12:51] in alignment with the rest of the spine

[12:59] only come as far as what's appropriate

[13:02] for you nice deep breaths in and out

[13:16] and on your next inhalation coming up

[13:20] with a flat back and then bringing your

[13:23] hands to your sides inhale bringing the

[13:26] arms up overhead exhale into heart

[13:29] center cleansing breaths here we'll do

[13:34] that two more times nice deep deep deep

[13:36] breath in exhale sending that energy

[13:42] down into the heart and one more time

[13:45] nice deep breath and fill the lungs up

[13:48] with energy and oxygen and as you exhale

[13:52] bringing all of the energy into your

[13:54] heart center now hands at your sides as

[14:00] you inhale let's raise the arms up and

[14:03] bring the palms in so that they're

[14:06] facing each other as if you're hugging a

[14:09] pillar of light

[14:11] and as you exhale sending that energy

[14:14] into your heart center take a nice deep

[14:18] breath in and as you exhale pressing the

[14:23] palms out away from you and think of

[14:26] sending that energy out into the

[14:28] universe inhale bring the arms into that

[14:34] grounded position as you exhale sending

[14:38] that energy into the heart

[14:40] nice deep inhalation

[14:43] peel the lungs up and as you exhale

[14:47] sending the energy this time out to the

[14:49] sides inhale nice rounded arms here as

[14:56] you exhale sending the energy into your

[14:59] heart center nice deep breath in as you

[15:05] exhale this time pressing the hands up

[15:07] towards the heavens inhale coming back

[15:13] to that rounded position as you exhale

[15:17] visualize that energy coming in to the

[15:20] heart center

[15:21] and now nice deep breath in and this

[15:27] time as you exhale pressing the hands

[15:29] down towards the Earth

[15:31] sending that energy down into the ground

[15:34] relax and we'll repeat that series two

[15:39] more times so inhale grounded arms

[15:43] shoulder-width exhale sending the energy

[15:46] into the heart inhale as you exhale send

[15:52] the energy out inhale exhale

[16:01] inhale exhale out to the sides inhale

[16:08] nice rounded position with the arms

[16:12] exhale visualize that energy coming into

[16:15] the heart center

[16:16] nice deep inhalation this time as you

[16:22] exhale press that energy bringing it out

[16:25] and sending it out into the universe

[16:28] inhale nice rounded position here exhale

[16:32] sending it into the heart

[16:35] nice deep inhalation and as you exhale

[16:38] sending the energy down to the earth and

[16:41] one more time inhale exhale visualize

[16:48] that energy moving into the body as you

[16:51] inhale exhale pressing that energy and

[16:56] love out into the universe inhale exhale

[17:04] inhale it's time out to the sides inhale

[17:12] exhale

[17:15] you inhale press the energy out into the

[17:22] heavens

[17:23] inhale exhale into the heart center

[17:28] nice and deep breath in as you exhale

[17:32] sending the energy down into the earth

[17:39] our next pose will be a warrior two if

[17:43] you're standing you're going to bring

[17:46] the feet and the legs out to a very wide

[17:49] stance stand up nice and tall and then

[17:52] start to bring the right foot out to the

[17:55] right bring the arms out to your side

[17:58] and a tea formation turn your head so

[18:02] that it's facing and looking out past

[18:05] the right fingertips and take a nice

[18:07] deep breath in and as you exhale start

[18:11] bending that right knee coming into our

[18:14] warrior two if you are seated sit up

[18:18] nice and tall inhale as you raise the

[18:21] arms up twisting the body to the right

[18:24] as you exhale bringing the arms to a tea

[18:27] formation the right hand will come

[18:30] behind you for support now if you're

[18:34] seated in a chair take and bring the

[18:36] left palm up towards the heavens and as

[18:40] you inhale raise the arm up lifting the

[18:43] chest if you're standing in your warrior

[18:46] pose you will take the right palm facing

[18:50] it up and as you inhale raise the arm up

[18:53] in both cases you're opening up the

[18:57] heart breathing in and breathing out

[19:19] and coming out of that coming into our T

[19:23] position and then coming back bringing

[19:29] the hands to your sides and we'll do

[19:32] that same thing on the other side if

[19:35] you're standing stand up nice and tall

[19:38] turn the left foot out and then bring

[19:41] the arms up look out past that left

[19:45] fingertips and as you exhale bending

[19:49] that left knee if you're seated you will

[19:53] inhale bringing the arms up twisting to

[19:57] the left bring the left hand behind you

[20:00] for support if you're seated you will

[20:03] take that right hand palm facing up and

[20:06] as you inhale lift the hand up towards

[20:10] the ceiling opening the chest

[20:12] if you're in you're standing warrior two

[25:43] enthusiasm saying that three times to

[25:49] ourselves my heart sings with new

Yes. In this 30-minute sequence, Cindy Bartz begins seated with feet planted and hands on the thighs, and she gives seated alternatives for the chest opener and sun salutations. When the hands would go behind the back, seated practitioners hold onto the back of the chair instead.
The mantra is 'my heart sings with new inspiration and enthusiasm,' which the practitioner repeats three times at the start and returns to at the end. It is used as an intention to carry the breath into the heart center.
Bartz repeatedly says to avoid struggling or forcing, and to keep the head and neck in alignment with the spine. Lift the chest on an inhale, draw the shoulder blades together, and release on the exhale, staying only as far as is appropriate for your body.
In this sequence, cow and cat are linked to the breath: the inhale moves into cow and the exhale moves into cat, returning to a flat back before the arms rise again. The movement gently moves the spine through flexion and extension while keeping the rhythm slow.
Inhale and raise the arms overhead, gathering energy in the palms, then exhale and bring that energy down into the center of the chest with the hands returning to the sides. Bartz asks practitioners to visualize the energy in the mind's eye and repeat the cycle several times.
The channel describes its focus as helping baby boomers with health and well-being, and the class's cues favor gentle, adjustable movement. Its emphasis on avoiding force, working within comfort, and using seated options makes it a reasonable choice for older practitioners, though anyone with a condition should check with their own clinician first.
