Baja Wellness Retreat — La Ventana, Mexico
Beachfront yoga retreat resort in La Ventana, Baja California Sur
Casa Tara Retreat is a beachfront yoga and wellness retreat resort in La Ventana, Baja California Sur, Mexico, set on a beach overlooking La Ventana bay on the Sea of Cortez. It is a boutique hotel where guests stay overnight, and it is known for hosting yoga retreats led by visiting teachers, alongside year-round yoga lessons, a wellness spa and an adventure program built around the bay's wind and water.
The name comes from Tara, the female meditational deity of Buddhism, regarded as the Bodhisattva of Universal Love and Compassion. The resort's own pages gloss the name as "the one who enables living beings to cross the oceans of existence and suffering." The place itself grew from the dream of its owner, Marcela. She first came to yoga through a traditional hatha class at the Sivananda Yoga Center in London while finishing graduate studies in Primatology, then began volunteering there and became a teacher. Years later she met her teacher Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, and went on to Thailand to study meditation. That journey left her with the aim of building a place where teachers from around the world could come to share their knowledge.
The retreat calendar runs into 2027 and is largely led by guest facilitators. Listings include Ofrenda, a yoga retreat inspired by Día de Muertos; You Are the Oracle Retreat; The Movement Retreat; Retiro Infinita Expansión, which draws on kundalini yoga and meditation; Retiro Marea; Retiro Recordar; SOL Yoga & Pilates Retreat; De Tierra, a women's yoga and dance retreat; Encuentro LUMA; and Drop in the Ocean Women's Retreat. Casa Tara also offers yoga lessons for all levels all year, with weekly classes in Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga and Hatha. Practice takes place in two shalas: the Palapa, open to nature, and the Ananda, a quiet enclosed space.
The building follows the same logic as the philosophy. Straw bales fill the walls for insulation, solar energy powers part of the hotel, and the gardens use native desert plants to reduce water use. The resort also cites water treatment and reuse systems, and a Feng Shui expert led the furnishing and colour scheme. Guests stay in Villa Shakti, with eight oceanfront rooms; in Classic Villas, spread across the two-story Villa Ganesh, Villa Lakshmi and Villa Shiva; in a 120-square-metre two-bedroom apartment; or in Ananda Glamping, ten palapa cabins inspired by Baja's fishing huts and roofed with leaves from the property's own palms. On site are heated infinity pools with ocean views, a hot tub, a wellness spa and a pescatarian restaurant.
La Ventana and neighbouring El Sargento were founded by fishermen in 1949 and remain rural. The bay sits in front of a wind gap between mainland Baja and Cerralvo Island, with steady winds from mid-October to April, and the resort arranges kite and wing surfing, stand up paddle, mountain biking and hiking, freediving and scuba with AIDA-certified associates in La Paz, whale shark swims, fishing and panga trips to Cerralvo Island.
The resort suits people looking for a yoga retreat in Baja California Sur, whether they come for a facilitated week with a group, a drop-in class at any level, or a stay that combines practice with the sea. Guests come away with a rested body, time spent on the water and in the desert, and, in the resort's words, a feeling of being "nourished, expanded, and deeply reconnected."
