Mindful Self-Compassion

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an eight-week training developed by Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer. It combines mindfulness with self-kindness and common humanity.

What is Mindful Self-Compassion?

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a structured training program, and also a way of relating to oneself, that teaches people to respond to their own suffering, failure, or perceived inadequacy with the warmth they would offer a friend. It was developed by psychologist Kristin Neff and clinical psychologist Christopher Germer. The program rests on Neff’s model of self-compassion, which has three interacting components:

  • Self-kindness: responding warmly to one’s own pain instead of attacking or ignoring it.
  • Common humanity: recognizing that imperfection and difficulty are part of shared human experience, not a private defect.
  • Mindfulness: holding painful thoughts and feelings in balanced awareness, without suppressing them or being swept away by them.

MSC is not a religious practice, and it is not psychotherapy. It is an educational, skills-based course that draws on contemplative methods and on psychological research.

Origins & lineage

The construct comes from Kristin Neff’s academic work in the early 2000s. In 2003 she published two papers in the journal Self and Identity. One introduced the Self-Compassion Scale, a self-report measure. The other proposed self-compassion as a healthy alternative to self-esteem. Neff has described her interest as arising partly from her own study of Buddhist practice. Christopher Germer, a clinical psychologist and part-time lecturer in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, brought mindfulness and compassion into clinical work. His book The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion appeared in 2009. According to Germer’s teacher biographies, the two co-developed the MSC program in 2010. A 2013 pilot study and randomized controlled trial by Neff and Germer found larger gains in self-compassion, mindfulness, and well-being, and larger reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress, than in a waitlist control. The gains persisted at six months. The core texts are Neff’s Self-Compassion (2011), Germer and Neff’s The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook (2018), and Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program (2019).

How it’s practiced

The standard course is eight weekly group sessions, with a longer retreat period partway through. Each session combines brief teaching, guided meditation, group discussion, and home practice. Typical practices include:

  • The Self-Compassion Break, which has three steps: noting that this is a moment of suffering, remembering that suffering is part of life, and offering oneself kind words.
  • Affectionate Breathing.
  • Loving-kindness meditation.
  • Soothing touch, such as a hand placed on the chest.
  • Informal practices used in daily life.

A distinctive element is attention to “backdraft.” This is the temporary surge of old pain that can arise when someone is first treated kindly, and participants learn to meet it with care and pacing.

Mindful Self-Compassion today

The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, a nonprofit based in Austin, Texas, supports the program. Its offerings include multi-week courses, five-day intensives, silent retreats (some online), and a self-paced video series. It also runs a multi-stage teacher training and certification pathway and programs for psychotherapists and healthcare communities. Neff’s own site, self-compassion.org, offers guided practices, a Self-Compassion Test, and shorter courses. Germer and Neff’s biographies report that more than 250,000 people have taken the program.

Common misconceptions

  • It is not self-indulgence or self-pity. Self-compassion includes recognizing shared humanity, which counters self-absorption.
  • It is not the same as self-esteem. Self-esteem is an evaluation of one’s worth. Self-compassion is a way of relating to oneself that does not depend on succeeding.
  • It does not mean lowering standards. Research summarized in the literature links self-compassion with less perfectionism and rumination, and with the ability to recover from setbacks.
  • It is not a substitute for treatment. MSC is not therapy, though clinicians use related methods.

There are also scholarly debates. Studies such as López et al. (2015) failed to replicate the six-factor structure of the Self-Compassion Scale. Later work supports a bifactor model, and researchers continue to argue over how to measure the construct.

How to begin

The usual entry points are the Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook (Germer and Neff, 2018), Neff’s Self-Compassion (2011), or Germer’s The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion (2009). A free introductory session or a course from a certified teacher is a good first step. A teacher-led group course is the closest match to the original research format.
