Retraite de méditation
Description
Most of us spend our days pushing: toward the next task, the next goal, the next version of ourselves. Wu Wei Weekend is a meditation retreat built around the opposite impulse. Its guiding idea is wu wei, the central principle of Taoism, often translated as non-forcing: the art of flowing with life rather than struggling against it.
Led by meditation teacher Charles Freligh, this in-person retreat takes place at Mount Olivet Retreat Center, set on 150 acres along Chub Lake just south of Minneapolis, Minnesota. With only 20 participants, the gathering stays small enough for real connection with the group and with the teacher, and for the kind of rest that is hard to find at home.
If you are tired of urgency and are curious about a way of being that is relaxed, clear, focused, and guided by the energy of the present moment, this retreat offers time, space, and gentle structure to explore it.
What to Expect
The retreat begins on a Thursday afternoon and closes late on a Sunday morning. Thursday is a half-day: you sign in, receive a welcome bag (including a copy of the Tao Te Ching, a notebook and pen, and the schedule), settle into your room, and gather for an introductory group session and a shared meal. The following two days are fully scheduled, and Sunday includes breakfast and a final integration session.
A sample day includes:
- Optional morning meditation
- Group session on the Tao
- Guided yoga practice
- A second group session on wu wei
- Dinner and a Celebration of the Day
Practice is woven through the whole weekend: guided group meditations inspired by the Tao, discussions that speak from the present moment, mindful movement (walks on the trails, yoga, and possibly tai chi), creative expression in whatever form you like, mindful eating, and silence offered as a teacher and friend.
The unscheduled time is just as much a part of the retreat. It leaves room to rest, walk, and let your nervous system settle away from daily busyness, so you can return home with a renewed and refreshed sense of self. You may also bring a creative project you have been meaning to give more attention.
About Charles Freligh
Charles Freligh holds a PhD in clinical psychology and works as a remote therapist, helping clients be more present in daily life. He is a published author (The Will to Do Nothing), a university professor, and a visual artist. He has spent time living at a Zen monastery, though he does not identify as Buddhist. His teaching is rooted in the healing power of presence, combining psychology, philosophy, and spirituality to make ancient wisdom more accessible and applicable to modern life.
Venue & Logistics
The retreat is held at Mount Olivet Retreat Center on Chub Lake, about 30 minutes from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Rideshare is suggested for those flying in, and a carpool may be possible. The center has walking trails, an outdoor meditation labyrinth and garden, a fire pit area, an indoor heated pool, whirlpool, and sauna, and high-speed wifi across the campus.
The price is all-inclusive: the retreat, a welcome bag, a hotel-style room, and three meals a day made with ingredients from the on-site garden and orchard and locally sourced foods. The kitchen can accommodate dietary requests with advance notice, and a snack and beverage bar is open around the clock. Couples can share a room at a discounted rate. A deposit reserves your place, with the balance invoiced ahead of the retreat.
