Description
What if the thing you have spent years hiding is the very thing that frees you? This in-person workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA, invites you into a language arts practice that treats shame not as a private failing but as a force that quietly silences people and keeps them from knowing their worth and reaching their goals.
Led by writer and educator Melissa Petro, Writing for Shame Resilience: Turning Shame Into Your Superpower draws on her critically acclaimed book, Shame on You: How to Be a Woman in the Age of Mortification. Through reflective writing, shared stories, and guided readings, you will look closely at how shame functions in modern life and begin to loosen its grip.
If you are ready to unlock a more authentic way of being, and you want to do it among others who are doing the same, this workshop offers a carefully held place to begin. No prior writing experience is needed.
What to Expect
Over the course of the workshop, writing becomes the way in. You will read inspiring texts, respond on the page, and learn about Melissa's own journey as a former sex worker and survivor of sexual exploitation and media humiliation. Her story frames essential questions about the role shame plays in our lives and how it can be met with resilience.
Participants are invited to:
- Learn about their own unique shame triggers
- Develop a greater awareness of how shame functions in society
- Cultivate vulnerability by sharing intimate stories in a safe space
- Practice empathetic listening as others speak their uncomfortable truths
The aim is to reconnect with your highest goals and purest ideals, to embody your most authentic self, and to embolden others to do the same. The workshop is open to people of all gender identities and expressions, and it suits professionals and laypeople alike. All levels of writing experience are welcome, and all course materials are provided.
