Description
A winter solstice sound bath and breath work evening at Nectar Yoga Retreat on Bowen Island, British Columbia. Gentle movement, pranayama (yogic breathing) and a thirty-minute crystal singing bowl sound bath lead into shared written intentions and a closing bonfire circle. It suits anyone who wants to mark the shortest day of the year with others, whether or not they have practised breath work or sound meditation before.
What to Expect
The word "solstice" comes from the Latin for "sun" and "to stand still," and the evening takes its cue from that pause in the sun's path. Held in Nectar's geodesic dome, the gathering runs from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Each person is invited to reflect on their own path from the summer solstice to the arrival of winter.
The evening begins with an introduction and a group welcome. From there, gentle functional movement and an invigorating pranayama practice prepare the body and breath for stillness. The crystal bowl sound bath follows and lasts thirty minutes. Participants rest while the bowls sound, and the tones fill the room. There is time for journal reflection and for placing an item on the community altar.
The evening closes around a communal bonfire, where everyone shares written intentions. The fire gives warmth and light, and it holds the group together as the days begin to turn back toward the light.
About Sound Baths
A sound bath immerses you in sound the way a bath immerses you in water. Singing bowls, here made of crystal, produce resonant, bell-like tones that move through the room and the body. The organizers describe the experience as one that supports relaxation, mood and a sense of well-being.
The Setting
Nectar Yoga Retreat sits on Bowen Island, in British Columbia. The gathering takes place in its geodesic dome, which is heated. It is still a tent, though, so it can feel cool. Parking at the venue is very limited, so arrive early and carpool if you can.
Before You Go
The practice is gentle and open to all levels, and no prior experience or prerequisites are required. The session is held in English.
Please bring:
- Layered, comfortable clothing for the season, including warm sweaters and socks
- A journal and pen
- A water bottle
- One item for the community altar, such as a plant, a crystal that reflects the season to you (rose quartz, clear quartz or citrine), a written intention or an image
Nectar offers sliding scale pricing so the evening stays as accessible as realistically possible. Those who can contribute at or above the retail value help widen access for others. One full scholarship place is available at each gathering, and proof of financial hardship is not required.
