The Living Pattern of Light: Alchemy Sound Journeys for Peace and Illumination

The Living Pattern of Light is a five-day sound healing workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, led by sound healer Deva Munay. It centers on seven sound journeys with alchemy crystal singing bowls, woven together with chakra work, movement, mantra, meditation and time in nature. It suits anyone drawn to sound baths, crystal bowl immersion or a quiet, reflective stretch by the Pacific. No prior experience with sound or movement is needed.

What to Expect

The gathering opens on Memorial Day, when the group honors those lost in war and turns toward a more personal question: how inner struggle can become compassion, harmony and peace. From there, the days follow the lengthening light toward the summer solstice.

The seven sound journeys use the shimmering harmonics of alchemy crystal singing bowls to invite deep relaxation and embodied presence. Under the name Sound Gnosis, from the Greek for direct, experiential knowing, the work treats sound as a way past habitual thinking and conditioned beliefs. Along the way you will:

- Move through the seven chakras with sound, movement, mantra and meditation.
- Explore resonance, entrainment and consciousness, with a chance to play the singing bowls yourself.
- Spend time in nature immersion and heartfelt reflection.
- Add your own golden thread of insight to a collective Flower of Life mandala.

Big Sur elder Damaris joins for an evening sharing of the mystical poetry of Hafiz.

The schedule begins on the first evening with How to Drop into Esalen from 5:00 to 6:00 pm and an opening session from 7:15 to 9:30 pm. The middle three days each hold a morning session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and an afternoon sound session, running 4:00 to 6:15 pm on two of those days and 4:00 to 6:00 pm on the other. The final morning closes with a session from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm.

Deva Munay is the founder of Sacred Sound & Wonder and a sound healer, musician and guide with three decades of experience. Based in Big Sur, she creates immersive journeys that bring together alchemy singing bowls, earth wisdom and sacred sound.

The Setting

The workshop is held at Esalen Institute, set among ocean views, mineral hot springs and towering trees on the Big Sur coast. Lodging depends on the option you choose, from shared floor space with your own bedding and bunk rooms, through standard and premium private rooms and yurts, to suites and cliffside houses. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided, along with coffee, tea and snacks.

Highway 1 access into northern Big Sur has been managed through Caltrans convoys, which at the time of the page ran only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. Check current conditions and plan your travel around them.

Before You Go

The program is open to all levels, and sessions are held in English. Tuition covers the five-day workshop, lodging in your chosen accommodation, all meals, coffee, tea and snacks, access to the hot springs and other campus features, and the classes on Esalen's Open Schedule. Healing Arts sessions such as Esalen Massage, specialty coffee and tea, bar purchases and bookstore items are extra. Guests in the sleeping bag space bring their own bedding.
