Description
Sing Us Alive in Sacred Waters is a monthly kirtan held in the Therapy pool at Harbin Hot Springs in Middletown, California. Kiranjot Kaur leads the singing with a rotating band of guest musicians, and the evening is open to anyone with a Harbin reservation, whether or not they have ever sung devotional music before. It takes place on the second Sunday of each month.
The intention is simple and stated plainly: to cultivate the undefended heart, to sing songs that affirm your essence while immersed in warm water, and to sing yourself back into the frequency of love.
What to Expect
The session runs from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. People gather in the Therapy pool, and the singing begins with the band. Kirtan is call and response, so the phrases are simple and repeated, and you learn them by joining in. There is no performance to watch from a distance. The room sings together, with the guest musicians changing from month to month, so each evening has its own color.
At the close of the session there is an invitation to offer a love contribution to Kiranjot and the musicians.
About Kiranjot Kaur
Kiranjot Kaur is a vocalist, Kundalini Yoga teacher and Indian classical music instructor, with a deep devotion to the Divine Mother and A Course in Miracles. She is a founding member of Copper Wimmin, whose appearances on Democracy Now and the Showtime series The L Word, where their song "Bleeding Rivers" was featured, brought the group recognition.
In 2006 she refocused her career on Indian classical music, spending five years living and studying in Amritsar, India, under her teacher Dr. Ustad Narindar Singh. Rather than the traditional performance where the audience is separate from the performer, she now draws together her early experiences of communal singing with Sweet Honey in the Rock and Bobby McFerrin, her love of Indian music, and the kirtan tradition. She was introduced to A Course in Miracles in 2014 and has steadily brought its daily lessons into her life.
Before You Go
All levels are welcome. You need no training in music or kirtan, only a willingness to sing simple devotional phrases along with the group. The session is held in English.
The kirtan itself is offered free and is included in your Harbin Hot Springs reservation, either a 6 hour pass or an overnight stay, which is booked separately with Harbin. A love offering to Kiranjot and the musicians is optional and gratefully received. Lodging, meals and travel to the venue are not included.
