Kirtan & Mantra Music
Description
Music + Mantra is an afternoon of heart-centered kirtan, a call-and-response practice of chanting, held at the Unitarian Universalist Society East in Manchester, Connecticut. It is open to everyone, including people who have never chanted before. Heart Centered Kirtan leads the gathering with wali Libby Volckening, Dan Thomas, Zach Gregory and Jimmy Robitaille, and the session begins at 3:00 pm.
What to Expect
Heart Centered Kirtan blends Sanskrit and Buddhist mantras with a range of modern musical styles. The band sings a line, the room sings it back, and the practice builds from there. The music keeps the chanting accessible, so you can follow along by ear without knowing the words beforehand. The aim is simple: to clear the mind and soothe the heart through shared voice and rhythm.
This kirtan is part of the Music + Mantra series hosted at UUSE. It suits curious beginners, regular chanters, and anyone looking for an uplifting, music-led way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
The Musicians
wali Libby Volckening sings and plays keys, guiding the call-and-response. Dan Thomas plays guitar, Zach Gregory plays bass, and Jimmy Robitaille plays percussion. Together they form the Heart Centered Kirtan ensemble that accompanies the chanting and sets its tone.
The Setting
The gathering takes place at the Unitarian Universalist Society East, 153 Vernon St. West, in Manchester, Connecticut. Chair seating is available for those who prefer it, and you are welcome to bring your own floor cushion if you like to sit low.
Before You Go
No experience is necessary, and all are welcome. Come as you are and sing as much or as little as feels right.
The event runs on a suggested freewill donation. No one is ever turned away, and if you are able, you are invited to pay it forward for someone else.
UUSE is a scent-free space, so please arrive without perfume, scented lotions or other fragranced products. Bring a cushion if you plan to sit on the floor, or choose a chair when you arrive.
