Healing Through Creativity: Merging Art and Psychology for Personal Growth and Change

Description
Healing Through Creativity is a five-day healing workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, that brings art therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) together. It is for anyone who wants to work with fears, anxieties and stuck patterns through making images and words, with no artistic experience required. The workshop is led by Pamela Hayes Malkoff, a board-certified art therapist and author of The Creative Cognitive Therapy Method.
What to Expect
This is a guided creative process, not a traditional art class or an open studio. The focus is on expressing emotion through making, not on skill or on producing "perfect" artwork. Over the days you work with drawing, collage, painting, writing and group dialogue.
Art therapy gives you a visual way to explore thoughts and feelings, while CBT helps you notice and challenge unhelpful thought patterns. Exercises include bringing your inner monster to life through art and then talking with it to gain clarity, working with poetry on themes of control, shifting perspectives and transformation, and drawing your own emotional landscape. You also write a personal Declaration of Independence, a piece about freeing yourself from what keeps you stuck. You leave with practical tools to keep working after the workshop ends.
The rhythm is steady. The group arrives on Monday for an introduction to Esalen at 5:00 pm, and the workshop opens that evening from 7:15 to 9:30 pm with arrival and orientation. Tuesday through Thursday have a morning session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and an afternoon session in the late afternoon, ending around 6:00 or 6:15 pm. Between them, the open class schedule on campus is available. Friday closes with a final session from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, and you may depart after 2:00 pm or stay through lunch.

The Setting
Esalen Institute sits on the Big Sur coast, a place long known for openness and exploration. Your stay includes housing, three meals a day, and coffee, tea and snacks. You also have access to the hot springs and other campus features, and to the classes on the open schedule, which range from morning movement and meditation to evening programs.
Rooms vary by choice, from a budget sleeping bag space and shared bunk rooms to standard rooms with shared or private bathrooms and premium rooms with ocean or forest views. You can also attend with an individual day pass or stay off-site.
Getting here takes planning. Access to northern Big Sur has been by Caltrans convoys on Highway 1, running only at 7:00 am and 5:00 pm each day, and these are the only times to travel in or out. Check the current travel advisory before you go.
Before You Go
No art experience is needed. Bring your own sketchbook so all of your artwork stays together as a keepsake; 8.5 x 8.5 inches or 7.6 x 5.3 inches are recommended. Watercolor paints are provided, though you may bring your own if you prefer not to share. All other supplies, including brushes, paper, pens, colored paper, glue and pastels, are provided, and a materials fee for shared supplies is included in registration.
Healing arts sessions such as Esalen massage, specialty coffee and tea, alcohol from the bar, and bookstore purchases are not included. A scholarship application is available for those who need one.
