Description
Fear of Dopeness is a weeklong self-development workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, led by Didier Sylvain. It is for people who sense they are holding back their own gifts, through self-sabotage, shrinking or quiet doubt, and who want to practice stepping into their full presence with others beside them. The workshop rests on the idea that most people do not fear failure so much as their own brilliance.
What to Expect
The week combines coherence coaching, embodied exercises and radical self-honesty. Days include guided movement and meditation to release physical and emotional constriction, and reflective journaling that surfaces patterns of self-betrayal and leads into written declarations of possibility. You will take part in storytelling and peer coaching circles that mirror back wholeness, strengths and hidden capacities. Creative play exercises give you a way to rehearse showing up boldly. Near the end, you make commitments to daily practices meant to anchor what you have found as a way of living.
The rhythm of the week is steady. It opens on Monday with an orientation to Esalen, How to Drop into Esalen, followed by an evening opening session. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each have a morning session from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and an afternoon session from 4:15 pm to 6:15 pm. Tuesday and Thursday also include an evening session from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The week closes on Friday with a final session and closing circle from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The arc moves from arrival through exploration and deepening to integration and closing.
About Didier Sylvain
Didier Sylvain is a multidisciplinary facilitator, executive coach, somatic practitioner, writer and musician. His work blends embodied practice, creative depth and transformational inquiry, helping people and groups move with greater attunement, aliveness and purpose. That mix of coaching and somatic work shapes the workshop's approach, which pairs honest reflection with movement and play.
The Setting
Esalen Institute sits on the coast of Big Sur, a place long associated with open exploration and personal growth. Guests staying on-site choose from a wide range of rooms, from budget shared sleeping-bag space and bunk rooms to private queen and king rooms, yurts with ocean-view decks, and suites such as the Price House Suite and the Rolf Suite above the hot springs. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, with coffee, tea and snacks between meals.
Getting to Big Sur takes planning. A travel advisory has been in effect on Highway 1, with access to Esalen through twice-daily convoys run by Caltrans, at 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. These are the only times to travel into and out of Big Sur, so check current conditions before you set out.
Before You Go
Registration is offered in several forms: the workshop with an on-site stay, the workshop with an off-site stay, or an individual day pass. A scholarship application is available for those who need it.
The on-site price covers workshop instruction and facilitation, housing, all meals, coffee, tea and snacks, access to Esalen's hot springs and campus amenities, and attendance at open-schedule classes. It does not cover healing arts sessions such as massage, bodywork or energy work, specialty beverages and alcohol from the bar, or bookstore purchases.
If you are sharing a room, note that some accommodations are gender-inclusive and others are same-gender. Sleeping-bag guests bring their own sleeping bag and bedding.
