Description
This beeswax candle making workshop at Backed By Bees in Burlington, Ontario is a hands-on, two-hour morning session for anyone curious about working with natural wax. Beginners and experienced crafters are both welcome. Participants make their own candles from pure beeswax taken directly from the farm's hives, while learning about the bees behind it. The event is listed with Shanine Dennill, a Tantra yoga and meditation teacher, as its organizer.
What to Expect
The workshop is a gentle blend of craft and education, set in what the organizer describes as a calming, creative atmosphere. It begins with learning about beeswax: how bees produce it, its environmental and health benefits, and why it is a sustainable choice for the home.
From there, the making begins. Each person creates three handcrafted beeswax candles using wax from the hives. While you work, you can sip a glass of the farm's signature honey soda or mead, which makes the morning feel unhurried and sociable rather than technical.
The organizer notes that beeswax candles are valued as natural air purifiers, that they may help soothe respiratory health, and that they give a warm, calming glow to a room. Many people make them as a handmade gift or as a quiet addition to their own home, including a meditation or rest space.
The session runs for two hours, starting at ten in the morning. Spaces are limited.
About Shanine Dennill
Shanine Dennill is a Tantra yoga and meditation teacher whose specialty is bringing ritual and rest together. In her words, ritual leads us into presence, devotion and consistency, while rest opens the way to deep stillness. Her work draws on Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Ayurveda, energy healing and time in nature, and she describes herself as a teacher, writer and nature lover.
Her spiritual path began young. Losing her grandfather and her father, and hearing of a person being killed in her home country of South Africa, led her to question life and death and to read widely on spirituality and religion. She was introduced to yoga while studying massage therapy in 1999, moved to Canada in 2001, and enrolled in her first yoga teacher training after a colleague suggested she try yoga again.
The Setting
The workshop takes place at Backed By Bees, on Appleby Line in Burlington, Ontario. The beeswax used in the session comes straight from the hives on site, so the setting is part of the lesson, not just a backdrop.
Before You Go
No experience is needed. The workshop is designed for beginners and seasoned crafters alike.
Everything required to make three candles is provided, along with one glass of honey soda or mead. You leave with the candles you have made and, as the organizer puts it, a newfound appreciation for the essential role of bees in our environment.
