Description
This seven-day humpback whale retreat on the island of 'Eua in Tonga pairs ethical, in-water whale encounters with daily yoga, pranayama and meditation. It is a wellness retreat for people who feel a long-standing pull toward whales and the ocean, and who would rather go slowly and integrate than chase spectacle. It is led by yoga and breathwork teacher Maja Mika, with local experts guiding the time in the water.
What to Expect
The week runs six nights, with five full days on the open ocean, roughly seven hours each, from about 9am to 4pm. Out on the water you watch whales breach and play, see mothers with their calves, listen to their songs through the water, and swim alongside them when they invite you in. Each session has four people in the water at a time, taking turns within a group of up to eight. Encounters are legal, regulated and led by local experts. Nobody chases or crowds the whales, and the whales set the terms. Because of that, an encounter in every session cannot be promised, though five long days in peak season make it likely.
Mornings begin with yoga, pranayama and meditation to open the body before you enter the water. Evenings are given to integration, so that what the ocean stirs up has room to settle. Around the ocean days there are whale-consciousness workshops, guided healing sessions, two marine biology presentations on the whales of Tonga, and a half-day island tour. One evening brings a bonfire and a traditional Tongan kava ceremony shared with local residents. Between sea days you can rest in the ice bath, spa bath and sauna.
About Maja Mika
Maja Mika is a yoga teacher, breathwork facilitator, author and retreat creator. Her path began in 2014, when she was studying Film Production, feeling anxious and exhausted, and went to a gym class on a friend's suggestion. Her breath deepened and her mind stopped circling, and it was the first time she had truly relaxed. Yoga carried her through her hardest years, and then, she says, the ocean found her too. She has spent over a decade gathering practices from around the world and now offers them in small-group retreats built on safety, presence and real connection. She describes herself as a human being on a spiritual journey, much like the people she guides.
The Setting
The retreat is based in oceanfront accommodation on 'Eua, less than fifty metres from the sea. Rooms are twin-share by default, with an ensuite, hot water, a private veranda and uninterrupted ocean views, and a private room can be requested when booking. You may hear whale song drift through the night. All meals are included, along with filtered drinking water, tea and coffee, and most dietary needs can be met if you flag them in advance, particularly allergies. Starlink internet is available if you want to stay connected.
Guests fly into Fua'amotu International Airport on Tongatapu. A short domestic flight to 'Eua and the airport or ferry transfer to the accommodation are included. Arriving in Tonga 24 to 48 hours before the retreat begins is recommended.
Before You Go
The retreat suits all levels. No freediving experience is needed, and comfort in the water matters more than swimming speed or strength. A wetsuit (3mm if required), fins, snorkelling equipment and lead weights are provided. If you are prone to seasickness, bring a remedy and take it before heading out. The retreat is held in English.
International flights, accommodation in Nuku'alofa, visas, insurance and tips are not included. Most guests arrive on their own, so travelling solo is the norm. This is not the right fit if you want nightlife, constant stimulation, luxury-focused travel or a guaranteed whale interaction every session.
