Retraite de méditation
Description
This five-night residential silent meditation retreat at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies in Barre, Vermont, uses Insight Dialogue to look at how the sense of a separate, fixed self comes to be. It is open to beginning and experienced practitioners, and it moves between silent practice and mindful conversation with others, all grounded in the teachings of the Buddha.
Insight Dialogue is a Buddhist practice in which meditative awareness is carried into speaking and listening. Here it becomes a way to investigate impermanence (anicca) and not-self (anattā) in real time, in the company of other people.
What to Expect
The retreat asks a plain question: how do we come to experience ourselves as separate or fixed, and what do we find when we bring mindful attention to that experience? Over the days, the sense of self is explored as something continually forming in experience, arising and passing according to conditions. As that is seen more clearly, there can be moments when a solid "I" softens, leaving room for ease, compassion, and freedom.
Mornings are held in silence, supporting a grounding in the body and the cultivation of mindfulness and kind awareness. As the day unfolds, that awareness is brought into speaking and listening with others, so that mindfulness in relationship becomes a way of deepening insight.
The program includes silent and guided meditation, relational practices, and both large and small group discussions. Noble silence is observed during much of the retreat. Some contemplative exercises involve mindful speaking and listening, and silence is kept at all other times.
A full day follows this rhythm, which may vary slightly:
- 6:30 am: wake-up
- 7:00 to 7:30 am: morning meditation
- 9:00 am to noon: morning session, held in silence
- 2:00 to 5:00 pm: afternoon session
- 7:00 to 9:00 pm: evening session
The retreat begins on a Tuesday with check-in from 3:00 to 5:30 pm, and the full days run through Saturday. On the closing Sunday, participants depart between noon and 2:00 pm.
The Setting
The retreat is residential, held at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies in Barre, Vermont. Staying on site for all five nights allows the silence and the shared practice to continue without interruption from morning meditation through the evening session.
