Om Bhavam Namah: A Short In-Studio Chant and Its Meaning

Dub Sutra
Dub Sutra

Source : Dub Sutra

À regarder · 4

Two minutes and forty-one seconds into a studio session, a voice says "Okay, so here we go," the room settles, and a chant begins on a single syllable: "Omnat." That is most of what this 2013 video offers. It is a small, unpolished document of Chris and Charlotte Proud of Dub Sutra recording live and acoustic in the studio as a video newsletter, with two Sanskrit phrases set out in the description to frame what is being sung. Understood on its own terms, it is a clip about the act of chanting in a room, with the words given as intention rather than explained at length.

Lecture · 4 sections

What is actually heard in the recording?

The clip runs short, and most of its length is sound rather than speech. There is a spoken lead-in, a few seconds of musical bed, and then the chant itself, which enters around the 57-second mark. From there the recording alternates between sung material and long stretches of instrumental texture. Between roughly 98 and 137 seconds, the automatic captions render the sung material as repeated "Oh no" and "Oh yeah," which is a reminder that the transcript is a poor guide to lyrics. If you want to know exactly what is sung, listen to the recording rather than trusting the captions.

The most useful thing about the clip is its honesty about process. There is no polished arrangement, no cut to a stage, no crowd. You hear the room, the start, the pauses, and a performance that begins without ceremony. For listeners who have spent time with studio recordings, that unfinished quality is part of the appeal: the chant is presented as something being done, not something being displayed.

What do the two phrases mean?

The video's own description supplies the translations. "Om Bhavam Namah," it says, means "I am the universe." "Om Kriyam Namah" is rendered as "My actions are aligned with universal laws." The two phrases pair an claim about identity with an claim about conduct: first who the speaker is, then how that being acts. That sequence is worth noticing if you practice chanting. The first phrase asks you to say something large about yourself; the second asks you to check whether what you do matches it.

These glosses come from the channel, not from a scholarly source in this material, so treat them as the teachers' own reading of the words. If you are working with the phrases in practice, it is worth looking for a teacher or text that addresses the Sanskrit directly before building a routine around them.

Why does a two-minute studio clip still matter?

The video has accumulated 71,865 views since it was posted on March 30, 2013. For a clip this short, that is a sign that the format found an audience: a newsletter-style look inside a working studio, a single chant, and no attempt to stretch the material into something longer. It is closer to a sketch than a finished record, and that is exactly why it works as a window. Listeners get to hear a chant at the moment it begins, which is a rarer thing than a finished track.

Where to go from here

Start by watching the clip once with the description open, so you hear the two phrases against the sound. Then listen a second time without reading anything and notice where the chant opens, where it pauses, and where the instrumental texture takes over. If the phrases interest you, the next step is outside this material: look for a teacher, a text, or a recorded practice that treats the Sanskrit in depth, and compare it with the channel's short gloss. Two minutes is enough to hear the room; it is not enough to learn the language, and the clip does not pretend otherwise.

Questions fréquemment posées

The video's description translates Om Bhavam Namah as "I am the universe." The channel presents this as its own reading of the phrase, so it is best treated as the teachers' interpretation rather than a definitive scholarly translation.
According to the video's description, Om Kriyam Namah means "My actions are aligned with universal laws." The phrase is paired with Om Bhavam Namah, moving from a statement about identity to one about conduct.
They are the musicians behind Dub Sutra, and the video is a live, in-studio acoustic performance they recorded as a video newsletter. The clip was posted to the channel on March 30, 2013.
The video is only about two minutes and forty-one seconds and is mostly sound, with a spoken lead-in and a chant that begins around the 57-second mark. The automatic transcript is unreliable for lyrics, so listening directly is more useful than the captions.
Begin by listening to the recording a few times with the description's translations in view, then practice the phrase slowly. For a deeper understanding of the Sanskrit, look for a qualified teacher or a text that addresses the language directly.
It has 71,865 views, which suggests the unpolished newsletter format found an audience. Its short, unstaged recording lets viewers hear a chant at the moment it starts, which is less common than a finished track.
