Awake at 3am? How Sleep Hypnosis Helps You Drift Back Down

Somewhere past three in the morning, the mind does something it rarely does at noon: it sits up, checks the clock, and starts reviewing everything it has to handle. Chibs Okereke's two-hour sleep hypnosis, published on his channel in July 2026, is built for that exact moment. Rather than coaching you to force sleep, it asks you to stop fighting the fact that you are awake, moves warmth and heaviness through the body in a deliberate sequence, and then lets a short set of affirmations loop softly under a rain track for most of the remaining runtime. Its central idea is a reversal that runs through the whole session: sleep is not something you do, it is something you allow.

Lecture · 7 sections

Why does a sleep hypnosis start by asking you to put the phone down?

Because the first obstacle is usually the device in your hand. The opening minute is less a greeting than a set of instructions for leaving the waking world. Okereke asks listeners to be somewhere safe, "not driving, not operating machinery," and to let the screen fade. He then makes a small but important move: he names the things that are waiting outside the bed and defers them.

"If your phone's still in your hand, you're welcome to set it down now. Whatever's still out there, the messages, the lists, the day, all of it can keep until morning. This is your time now."
— Chibs Okereke, opening segment (0:00)

That deferral matters for anyone who has lain awake running a to-do list. The script does not argue with the list or try to talk you out of worrying. It simply tells the mind the list can wait until morning, which is a different and gentler instruction than "stop thinking."

He also removes the usual performance pressure of meditation. "You don't have to relax in any particular way. You don't have to get it perfect." And he gives permission for the one outcome most people at 3am are afraid of: "If you drift off and the words start to blur and fade, that's completely okay. That's not you missing anything. That's exactly what this is meant to do."

How does the body scan work when you can't fall asleep?

The session is built on two body-based sequences, and the order is worth understanding because it is not a straightforward head-to-toe scan. The first is a warmth sequence. Listeners are invited to place a hand over the heart or low on the belly, to notice the breath arriving and leaving "in its own time," and then to feel a warmth gather over the shoulders "as if something gentle is being drawn up and over you," then along the arms, across the chest, down over the hips and legs. The image the script keeps returning to is a blanket that folds itself around the body: "Not pressing. Not heavy. Just resting there, warm and steady."

The second sequence is softening. Here the script names specific places that tend to hold on to wakefulness, one at a time: the jaw, allowed to part slightly; the space behind the eyes, which the narration calls "that busy watchful place where the wide awake feeling so often sits"; the eyes themselves; the throat; the chest; then the fingers, the wrists, and the arms. Each is given a short instruction, a breath, and a pause.

This is a useful distinction for anyone who has tried progressive relaxation before. Many classic versions ask you to tense a muscle group and then release it. This script never asks for tension first. It asks you to notice a place, let it soften on the exhale, and move on. For a listener who is already wired and tired at 3am, that removes one more task. The body is not being pushed into calm; it is being offered a series of small, specific invitations to stop bracing.

Why does the script keep calling the struggle the real problem?

The most interesting idea in the material is not a technique but a diagnosis. Okereke names what he believes keeps people awake at this hour, and it is not the noise or the clock. It is the effort.

"The thing that keeps so many of us awake at this hour is the struggle against being awake. The trying, the calculating, the wishing it were different. So just for now, you can set that struggle down."
— Chibs Okereke, sleep hypnosis section

This reframes a familiar experience. Most people who wake at 3am do not simply lie there. They check the time, calculate how many hours remain, and judge themselves for being awake. Each calculation is a small act of resistance, and resistance is a form of alertness. The script's answer is not a better argument for sleep. It is a request to stop arguing.

The language underneath this is about safety rather than willpower. The body is described as already "breathing," already "slowing," already "restoring itself." Sleep returns, the narration suggests, "when it feels safe enough to stop trying." Whether or not a listener finds that framing convincing, it is consistent: the session treats the nervous system as something to reassure rather than something to command.

There is also a communal turn. "You're not the only one awake right now. All across the world in the dark, others are lying just like you, breathing slowly, softening, finding their own way back down." For someone who feels isolated in the small hours, that sentence does quiet work. It places the wakeful listener inside a large, ordinary human experience instead of a private failure.

What is the layered descent, and why does the voice disappear?

After the body is warm and the struggle has been named, the session begins what it calls layers. "Another soft layer can settle around you. The first layer a deep warmth wrapping the whole body. The next layer, the sounds of the room drifting further away. And the next layer, the last of the thinking growing too faint, too distant to follow." The structure is cumulative: each layer is warmer, heavier, and quieter than the one before. It is less a single induction than a staircase, with the listener descending one step at a time.

The most distinctive design choice comes near the end of this stretch. Okereke tells listeners that they no longer need to follow him at all. He asks the voice to "blur and soften until the words stop being words at all and become just another part of the choir. Like something heard from another room." This is the handover point. The guide's job is to become unnecessary, and the script is explicit about it. A listener who needs the voice to keep going is being asked, gently, to let it go.

Why do the affirmations repeat for most of the session?

According to the video's chapter markers, the affirmations begin at 29:09, and they run for the large majority of the two-hour runtime. The phrases are short and repetitive, designed to be heard rather than memorized. The script says so directly: "You don't have to repeat them. You don't have to remember them. They can simply be there quietly, steadily, while you sleep."

The core lines reframe the specific fears of the 3am waking. "Waking in the night is normal and I'm safe." "I don't have to make sleep happen." "There's nothing I need to fix right now." "My body knows how to find its way back to sleep." "Rest is enough. Even if sleep takes its time, I will wake when it's time, feeling more rested than before."

The transcript material shows the loop returning in a regular rhythm. The opening line, "I'm allowed to rest even in the middle of the night," surfaces at roughly 29 minutes, then again around 55 minutes, then near 83 minutes, and again near 112 minutes, with the same sequence of phrases following each time. That cyclical structure is itself the design. A listener who drifts away and surfaces twenty minutes later finds the same sentences waiting, which makes returning to the thread easier than starting over. Repetition works here as a tether rather than an instruction.

It is worth being honest about limits. The transcript available for this article covers the opening and the first affirmation cycles, not the full two hours, so claims about the later stretch rest on the timestamped structure rather than a complete read. Nothing in the material promises a particular result, and the session itself is careful about that: sleep is "allowed," not guaranteed.

What should a listener expect at 3am?

The honest answer is that this is a tool for lowering the stakes of waking, not a cure for insomnia. The video's description cites a figure that "around 1 in 3 adults struggle to get enough sleep," and frames the session as support for the nights when a busy mind, a racing heart, or plain frustration interrupts rest. It is also upfront that you do not need to concentrate, follow every word, or succeed. Drifting in and out counts as the intended experience.

That modesty is part of why the approach is credible. A script that promised to make you sleep would be asking you to try harder, which is the very thing it identifies as the problem. Instead, it asks you to stop, to stay warm, to let the words blur, and to trust that the body already knows how to return. For many listeners that is a more useful instruction than another attempt at sleep.

Where to go from here

If you wake in the night, the most practical lesson from this session is simple. Put the phone down, turn the clock away, and spend a few minutes on the breath and the warmth sequence before you do anything else. Let the first layers of the descent do their work. If the voice starts to blur, that is the session working as designed. If waking becomes a regular pattern that leaves you exhausted during the day, a conversation with a doctor or sleep clinician is a more reliable next step than any single recording. A recording can help you get back down for one night; it cannot diagnose why you keep coming up.

[0:00] Before we begin,

[0:03] please make sure you're somewhere safe

[0:05] where you can fully relax.

[0:08] Not driving,

[0:11] not operating machinery,

[0:14] just free to let your whole system rest.

[0:20] Hey, I'm Chibzo Kerake

[0:24] and welcome to this deep sleep hypnosis

[0:27] to get you back to sleep in the middle

[0:30] of the night.

[0:35] This one's made to carry you all the way

[0:38] back down

[0:40] into a deep

[0:42] and restful sleep

[0:45] that lasts the rest of the night.

[0:51] Tonight, I'll be speaking gently to the

[0:54] quieter part of you,

[0:57] the part that already knows how to

[0:59] sleep.

[1:02] And by the end of this hypnosis,

[1:06] if you haven't already drifted off,

[1:10] you'll be more than ready to fall into a

[1:12] deep,

[1:14] restorative sleep.

[1:20] And there's nothing for you to watch

[1:22] from here.

[1:25] In a moment,

[1:27] the screen will gently fade to black.

[1:31] So, you can close your eyes

[1:34] and simply listen.

[1:40] If your phone's still in your hand,

[1:43] you're welcome to set it down now.

[1:49] Whatever's still out there,

[1:52] the messages,

[1:55] the lists,

[1:57] the day,

[2:00] all of it can keep until morning.

[2:03] This is your time now.

[2:09] And there's no right way to do this.

[2:14] You don't have to relax in any

[2:16] particular way.

[2:19] You don't have to get it perfect.

[2:24] However you're feeling right now

[2:27] is completely fine.

[2:32] You don't even have to stay awake for

[2:35] me.

[2:38] If you drift off

[2:40] and the words start to blur and fade,

[2:45] that's completely okay.

[2:49] That's not you missing anything.

[2:53] That's exactly what this is meant to do.

[3:00] There's nothing to follow now

[3:04] and nothing to hold on to.

[3:09] You can simply rest

[3:12] as my voice carries you gently down from

[3:15] here.

[3:21] So take a moment now

[3:24] just to settle yourself back in.

[3:31] Pulling the covers up a little

[3:34] if you'd like

[3:36] so the warmth gathers around you again.

[3:44] turning the pillow to its cooler side

[3:49] or finding the spot that feels easiest

[3:52] for your head.

[3:58] And if there's a clock glowing somewhere

[4:00] nearby,

[4:02] you can turn that away too if you like,

[4:05] so the hours stop calling for your

[4:08] attention.

[4:14] There's nothing left to check,

[4:17] nothing left to sort out tonight.

[4:30] And now

[4:32] just noticing where your body meets the

[4:35] bed.

[4:40] The weight of you

[4:42] resting into the mattress

[4:46] already being held.

[4:52] The back,

[4:55] the hips,

[4:58] the shoulders,

[5:02] all supported.

[5:07] Nothing for them to do.

[5:15] And if it feels right,

[5:18] you can rest a hand gently over your

[5:21] heart

[5:23] or low on the belly.

[5:30] Feeling the hands light warmth,

[5:34] the soft weight of it

[5:37] rising and falling

[5:40] with each easy breath.

[5:47] A small comfort

[5:50] that's always yours

[5:53] on any night,

[5:56] at any hour.

[6:07] And as your hand rests there,

[6:11] you may begin to notice that the body is

[6:15] already breathing.

[6:22] You don't have to do anything with that.

[6:28] Just noticing the air arriving

[6:32] all on its own.

[6:37] And noticing the air leaving

[6:41] in its own time.

[6:53] And perhaps

[6:56] as you pay the breath a little

[6:58] attention,

[7:00] the breath begins to slow

[7:03] all by itself.

[7:09] Each one a touch softer than the last.

[7:24] And you may now begin to notice a soft

[7:27] warmth

[7:30] settling around you.

[7:37] Over the shoulders first

[7:40] as if something gentle is being drawn up

[7:44] and over you.

[7:51] along the arms. Now

[7:55] across the chest

[8:00] down over the hips

[8:04] and the legs.

[8:12] Not pressing.

[8:16] Not heavy.

[8:19] Just resting there,

[8:23] warm

[8:26] and steady.

[8:34] Held on every side

[8:38] as though the whole bed has folded

[8:41] itself softly around you.

[8:50] And here,

[8:53] wrapped and warm,

[8:56] you can begin to drift back down.

[9:11] As that warmth settles,

[9:15] a gentle heaviness can begin to settle

[9:18] with it.

[9:23] The kind of heaviness that comes when

[9:25] the body finally feels safe enough to

[9:29] let go.

[9:35] Your limbs growing softer

[9:40] and weightier,

[9:45] sinking just a little further into the

[9:48] warmth that's holding you.

[10:01] There's nowhere to be

[10:05] and nothing to carry

[10:10] for the rest of the night.

[10:28] And as you rest here,

[10:32] let's gently soften the few places that

[10:36] tend to stay awake.

[10:44] Starting with the jaw,

[10:51] allowing the back teeth to part.

[10:57] Just slightly.

[11:03] The jaw loosening,

[11:09] growing heavy.

[11:15] Allowing the chin to soften towards the

[11:17] chest.

[11:28] and moving our awareness to the space

[11:30] behind the eyes. Now

[11:36] that busy watchful place

[11:43] where the wide awake feeling so often

[11:46] sits

[11:53] allowing it to grow quiet. Now

[12:00] the eyes growing still beneath their

[12:03] lids,

[12:09] soft

[12:12] and heavy

[12:16] and dark.

[12:27] The throat now

[12:31] softening too.

[12:37] Nothing to say,

[12:42] nothing to swallow down.

[12:49] Just allowing the throat to open

[12:55] and ease

[13:05] and the chest. Now

[13:10] if there's any tightness here

[13:15] any flutter left over from waking,

[13:22] you can allow it to soften with each

[13:25] breath out.

[13:32] The chest rising

[13:37] and falling

[13:41] a little slower each time.

[13:48] growing calm

[13:52] and warm

[13:56] and still.

[14:08] Finally, the hands,

[14:15] allowing the fingers to uncurl,

[14:22] growing warm

[14:26] and heavy,

[14:31] resting exactly where they are.

[14:49] that same heaviness

[14:55] spreading up now

[15:01] through the wrists.

[15:07] and through the arms.

[15:21] The thing that keeps so many of us awake

[15:24] at this hour

[15:27] is the struggle against being awake.

[15:35] the trying

[15:39] the calculating,

[15:42] the wishing it were different.

[15:48] So just for now,

[15:51] you can set that struggle down.

[16:04] You don't have to make sleep happen

[16:06] tonight.

[16:10] Sleep isn't something we do.

[16:14] It's something we allow.

[16:19] It's something the body finds its own

[16:22] way back to

[16:25] when it feels safe enough to stop trying

[16:40] and simply resting here

[16:44] warm

[16:47] and Still

[16:51] in the quiet dark,

[16:55] your body is already recovering.

[17:06] It's already slowing.

[17:12] It's already restoring itself.

[17:25] Whether sleep comes in a minute

[17:29] or a little while from now,

[17:34] the night still holds you.

[17:39] Nothing has been lost.

[17:56] and you're not the only one awake right

[17:59] now.

[18:04] All across the world

[18:08] in the dark,

[18:11] others are lying just like you,

[18:16] breathing slowly,

[18:20] softening,

[18:24] finding their own way back down.

[18:33] You're in good company

[18:39] and you

[18:41] can drift back down too

[18:57] with each breath. Now

[19:00] another soft layer can settle around

[19:04] you.

[19:10] The first layer

[19:13] a deep warmth

[19:17] wrapping the whole body.

[19:26] the next layer.

[19:29] The sounds of the room

[19:33] drifting further away.

[19:43] And the next layer,

[19:47] the last of the thinking

[19:51] growing too faint,

[19:55] too distant

[19:59] to follow

[20:12] layer over layer.

[20:16] Each one warmer

[20:20] and heavier

[20:23] and quieter than the last

[20:31] until you're wrapped completely

[20:36] held on every side

[20:40] with nothing left to do.

[20:44] And nowhere left to be.

[20:59] Just here.

[21:02] Warm

[21:05] and safe.

[21:09] Drifting all the way back down.

[21:29] And now there's nothing left for you to

[21:32] do

[21:35] but rest

[21:48] while you lie here.

[21:52] softened

[21:56] and still.

[22:00] Your body is quietly doing everything it

[22:03] needs to.

[22:10] Slowing the heart,

[22:14] lowering the breath,

[22:19] settling the whole nervous system into

[22:22] its deep restful rhythm.

[22:34] This is the body's own repair

[22:39] happening all on its own

[22:43] in the dark

[22:47] in the quiet

[22:51] while you simply drift back down.

[23:13] Every cell easing,

[23:20] every muscle releasing the last of the

[23:23] day

[23:25] and the Last of the waking.

[23:35] There's nothing to mend,

[23:42] nothing to manage,

[23:48] only rest.

[23:52] deep

[23:55] and unhurried,

[23:59] carrying you the rest of the way into

[24:02] sleep.

[24:23] And from here,

[24:26] if you ever need to wake up for any

[24:29] reason at all,

[24:32] you will

[24:37] easily,

[24:41] naturally,

[24:44] just as you always do.

[24:52] But if there's nothing that needs you,

[24:57] no reason to wake,

[25:03] you can allow yourself to sink even more

[25:06] fully into this deep

[25:10] restorative sleep.

[25:31] And from here,

[25:35] you don't need to follow my voice any

[25:38] longer.

[25:46] You can allow my voice to blur

[25:52] and soften

[25:57] until the words stop being words at all

[26:04] and become just another part of the

[26:06] choir.

[26:13] Like something heard from another room.

[26:20] There,

[26:23] but no longer needing your attention.

[26:47] You can let my voice drift to the edge

[26:50] of the dark

[26:54] and let yourself drift the other way

[27:04] softly.

[27:09] Inward

[27:13] into sleep.

[27:35] There's nothing more to do now.

[27:44] Just rest

[27:49] and warmth

[27:54] and quiet.

[28:14] And now

[28:18] these simple phrases can drift softly in

[28:23] the background.

[28:33] You don't have to repeat them.

[28:38] You don't have to remember them.

[28:45] They can simply be there

[28:50] quietly,

[1:45:16] to sleep.

[1:45:29] I can drift back down gently and easily.

[1:45:46] The night continues to hold me.

[1:46:01] I am warm

[1:46:04] and heavy

[1:46:07] and hell.

[1:46:20] With every breath, I settle a little

[1:46:24] deeper.

[1:46:38] I can let go of the hours and simply

[1:46:42] rest.

[1:46:55] My mind is growing quiet

[1:46:58] and still.

[1:47:12] It's safe to close my eyes and drift

[1:47:16] back down.

[1:47:29] Rest is enough even if sleep takes its

[1:47:34] time.

[1:47:47] I will wake when it's time, feeling more

[1:47:50] rested than before.

[1:48:04] Sleep is returning to me now.

[1:48:20] I'm allowed to rest even in the middle

[1:48:24] of the night.

[1:48:37] Waking in the night is normal and I'm

[1:48:40] safe.

[1:48:53] I don't have to make sleep happen.

[1:49:08] There's nothing I need to fix right now.

[1:49:24] My body knows how to find its way back

[1:49:27] to sleep.

[1:49:40] I can drift back down gently and easily.

[1:49:57] The night continues to hold me.

[1:50:13] I am warm

[1:50:15] and heavy

[1:50:18] and held.

[1:50:32] With every breath, I settle a little

[1:50:36] deeper.

[1:50:49] I can let go of the hours and simply

[1:50:53] rest.

[1:51:06] My mind is growing quiet

[1:51:10] and still.

[1:51:23] It's safe to close my eyes and drift

[1:51:27] back down.

[1:51:45] time.

[1:51:58] I will wake when it's time, feeling more

[1:52:01] rested than before.

[1:52:16] Sleep is returning to me now.

[1:52:35] of the night.

[1:55:38] down.

[1:55:51] Rest is enough even if sleep takes its

A sleep hypnosis for the middle of the night is a spoken guided session meant to help you drift back to sleep after waking, rather than falling asleep from the start. Chibs Okereke's two-hour version combines a warmth and body-softening sequence, a layered descent, and affirmations that loop under rain sounds. It asks listeners to stop struggling against being awake.
The material does not make a clinical claim, and the session itself says sleep is something you allow, not something it guarantees. Its approach is to lower the effort of trying, reframe waking as normal, and give the mind a steady voice to follow. Results will vary, and persistent insomnia calls for a medical opinion.
Classic progressive relaxation usually asks you to tense a muscle group and then release it. In this session, the script never asks for tension first; it names places like the jaw, eyes, throat, and hands and invites each to soften on the exhale. The goal is to reduce bracing rather than to work muscles harder.
Repetition gives the mind a thread to return to after drifting away, so you do not have to start over when you surface. In this recording the opening affirmation, 'I'm allowed to rest even in the middle of the night,' comes back in a regular cycle across the two hours. The script also says you do not need to remember or repeat the phrases.
Put your phone down, turn away any glowing clock, and settle your body with your breath and a hand over the heart or belly. Let go of the mental calculation of how much sleep is left, since the struggle against being awake is the thing this approach targets. If the pattern keeps happening, a doctor or sleep clinician is the right next step.
The narration is designed to become unnecessary as you descend. The speaker asks listeners to let his voice blur until it becomes 'just another part of the choir,' so that sleep can take over from the guidance. Fading the voice is part of the intended handover from listening to drifting.
The video runs about two hours, and its chapter markers place the start of the affirmations at 29:09. The body-based hypnosis comes first, and the affirmations continue softly over rain sounds for most of the remaining time. Listeners are told they can drift in and out without following every word.
