Yoga for Collective Liberation: Why Start With Your Neighbors

When the scale of injustice becomes too much to hold, where does energy go? In a one-minute excerpt from Episode 14 of Coco's Sanctuary, yoga teacher Itzel Hayward gives a plainly stated answer: she stops asking how to fix everything and starts asking what her own home, block, and city need. The idea is that collective liberation is built at the scale a person can actually touch, and that overwhelm is easier to bear when it is turned into concrete questions about the people nearby.

Why Does Turning Toward Your Own Neighborhood Help When the Problem Feels Too Big?

Hayward is candid about the feeling she is answering. She does not offer a cure for overwhelm so much as a place to redirect it. "When I'm in that state of just like overwhelm, I come back to community," she said in Episode 14 of Coco's Sanctuary (0:00). She then moves outward in rings: "my immediate community," then "my home, my neighbor, my neighborhood, my city." Each ring arrives with a shift in the question. Instead of asking what she can take apart single-handedly, she asks how to bring support into her community and how to build more resilient communities together.

The questions she lists are specific enough to act on. What do my neighbors need? What do the people in my community need? Which communities are being targeted in my city, and what do they need? (0:35) Those are questions a person can begin answering in a week, through conversation, listening, and showing up. The answers are not abstractions. They are names, streets, and particular gaps in support.

Hayward is also clear about why this matters to her. "To me that helps me so much cuz I feel like I can make such a bigger impact," she said (0:42). The logic runs against the usual assumption that thinking small means thinking less. For her, the local frame is what makes impact feel real. She then widens the lens again, saying she "absolutely love[s] what people are doing across the country" (0:48). The local and the national are not rivals in her account; the national is made of communities like the ones she is describing.

The clip closes on her point about trust: "I think it's so important to people for people to find organizations that they trust that they can support people who they can" (0:55). The excerpt breaks off mid-sentence there, so the full thought is not on the record in this clip. What is clear is the orientation: find the people and organizations you trust, then put your effort where you can see its results.

Where to go from here

This excerpt is the opening minute of a longer conversation. The full Episode 14, "Yoga for Collective Liberation," is available on YouTube and Spotify, where Hayward's broader discussion of yoga and collective liberation is presented in full. For readers who want more context than a single minute can carry, that is the natural next step.

[0:00] When I'm in that state of just like

[0:02] overwhelm, I come back to community.

[0:06] Like my immediate community, how can I

[0:08] get support in my community? How can I

[0:11] bring support into my community? How can

[0:12] we build more resilient communities

[0:14] together? Right? Like immediate, right?

[0:17] Like my home, my neighbor, my

[0:19] neighborhood, my city, you know? That's

[0:22] where I come back to when I feel like,

[0:24] oh my gosh, what can I dismantle ice by

[0:26] myself, you know what I mean? Like

[0:30] so that is where I channel my energies.

[0:32] Like I come back to healing communities.

Questions fréquemment posées

Itzel Hayward says she comes back to her immediate community, starting with home, neighbors, neighborhood, and city. She asks concrete questions like what her neighbors need and which communities in her city are being targeted. She says this helps her feel she can make a bigger impact.
In this clip, Hayward says local questions make her impact feel larger and more real, not smaller. She still admires what people are doing across the country, and she frames national efforts as built from communities like the local ones she describes.
Hayward says it is important for people to find organizations they trust and can support. The excerpt breaks off before she finishes that thought, so the clip does not say more about how to choose between local and national groups.
