Why Liking a Musician's Facebook Page Isn't Enough

Steven Cravis
Steven Cravis
Feb 4, 2013
3 min de lecture

In an eighty-five-second clip published to YouTube in February 2013, the pianist and composer Steven Cravis makes a single, specific request of the people who have just liked his Facebook page: a like is not the same as hearing from him. The step that actually connects a fan to an artist's posts is a second one, turning on notifications for the page. It is a small piece of housekeeping, but it says something real about how independent musicians reach the people who follow them, and what a listener has to do to stay in the loop.

Lecture · 2 sections

Why does liking a page not guarantee you'll see the posts?

Cravis opens by thanking viewers for recently liking the page, then moves straight to what he calls "one important thing." In his words, turning on notifications is "the only way that you'll really see my posts." Those posts, he says, carry free music download links, new songs, new albums, and new videos. Each is a direct line from the artist to the listener, which is why he treats the setting as essential rather than optional.

The procedure is brief and he walks through it on a computer. Hover over the like button; once a page is liked, it shows a check mark, which he points out as the sign that the like has registered. Then hover over that liked button and choose "get notifications." That is the whole instruction.

The distinction is worth sitting with. A like is a passive gesture. It records approval and nothing more. A notification setting is a standing request, a decision that says this page's updates should reach me. For a musician who uses his page as a release channel, the difference between the two is the difference between a fan who stumbled onto a page and a fan who is waiting for the next record. The clip doesn't dig into how Facebook's feed decides what it shows anyone, and Cravis doesn't claim to. What he does say, plainly, is that without this step you won't really see his posts, and he asks viewers to do it now.

There is also something quietly generous in the request. He is asking for nothing but a few seconds of attention, and what he offers in return is music that costs the listener nothing: free downloads, new work, new videos. The same channel description lists where else his recordings can be heard, from Spotify and iTunes to a Pandora station for listeners in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, but the clip itself stays focused on the one action.

Where to go from here

To follow Cravis directly, find his musician page on Facebook at facebook.com/stevencravismusic and turn on notifications as he describes. His YouTube music playlist, linked in the original description, gathers hours of his piano recordings in one place. For sheet music, his store is at stevencravis.com/store. The clip is short, but it is a clear example of an artist asking for one concrete action and explaining exactly why it matters.
