Why Activists Are Told to Meditate an Hour, Not 30 Minutes

Source : Coco's Sanctuary

In a 59-second clip from Episode 14 of Coco's Sanctuary, "Yoga for Collective Liberation," the teacher Itzel Hayward takes up an objection she hears often: that in organizing and activist spaces, there isn't time for healing or wellness practices, because so much direct work needs doing on the ground. Her answer is a teaching she received secondhand and clearly loves for its bite. It turns the logic of the excuse inside out: the busier you are, the longer the practice should be.

Lecture · 2 sections

What does the "meditate an hour" teaching actually say?

Hayward says she cannot recall the name of the teacher who offered it, so the line travels without attribution. As she recounts it, the instruction runs: you should meditate for 30 minutes every day, and if you don't have time to meditate for 30 minutes, you should meditate for an hour. Hayward laughs as she tells it, and she is careful to say she doesn't mean to be flip. Her interviewer responds, "That's awesome," and Hayward closes by saying she loves the quote, twice.

What makes the line work is its structure. The excuse of no time is not argued against; it is answered by reversal. Scarcity becomes a reason to deepen the practice rather than drop it. For people doing frontline work, where exhaustion is a constant companion, that reframing treats rest and inner work as part of the capacity sustained action requires, rather than a luxury sitting outside it. That reading is ours, not something Hayward spells out in the clip, but it is the logic that makes the joke land.

Where to go from here

This clip is a fragment, and it is best understood as one moment in a longer conversation. The full episode, "Yoga for Collective Liberation" with Itzel Hayward, is available on YouTube or Spotify, according to the channel's note. Readers who want Hayward's wider thinking on yoga and collective liberation should begin with the complete episode rather than this excerpt.

[0:00] You know, something I hear a lot from

[0:02] people is like especially in the

[0:03] organizing space or activism space is

[0:05] that there's not enough time to like

[0:07] these practices of healing wellness like

[0:10] there's just so much that is needed to

[0:12] be done on the ground that this is not

[0:14] the priority.

[0:16] >> And wondering if you have anything you

[0:18] would say to those people that are

[0:21] really focusing on the direct action

[0:27] >> Yeah, I love that. I mean, it's it's I

[0:30] don't mean to be flip with this quote,

[0:32] but it's a quote that I love that um

[0:34] that makes me kind of chuckle and makes

[0:36] me think. Um, but there was a teacher, I

[0:39] wish I could remember the name of the

[0:40] teacher who said, "You should meditate

[0:42] for 30 minutes every day. And if you

[0:45] don't have time to meditate for 30

[0:55] >> That's awesome.

[0:56] >> So, I know. I love that quote. I love

[0:58] that quote.

Questions fréquemment posées

Itzel Hayward addresses this objection directly in Episode 14 of Coco's Sanctuary, noting that people in organizing spaces often say healing practices aren't a priority. She answers with a teaching that reverses the excuse: if you can't find 30 minutes, meditate for an hour.
Hayward does not know the name of the teacher who offered the line, so it is not attributed in the clip. She presents it as a teaching she heard and loves, without naming its source.
This 59-second excerpt covers one exchange on time, activism and healing. The full episode with Itzel Hayward is available on YouTube or Spotify and covers her broader ideas about yoga and collective liberation.
