When Your Heart Breaks: Teaching Emotional First Aid

Walk into a conference room of 400 people and ask a straightforward question: "Raise your hand if you know CPR." Three-quarters of the hands go up. Their owners sit a little taller. They've trained for the catastrophe—a stopped heart, the sudden collapse. Society has equipped them.

Then ask the follow-up: "Raise your hand if anyone ever taught you how to hold someone through emotional crisis. How to sit with another person's pain, or your own, when it's breaking you." The silence is absolute.

This gap—between our readiness for physical emergency and our total unpreparedness for emotional collapse—is the problem Max Strom has spent years addressing. It's the spine of his Breathe to Heal Facilitator Training, a seven-day immersion in the Austrian mountains that treats emotional resilience not as wellness bonus material, but as something society should have taught us from childhood, the way we teach CPR.

Lecture · 5 sections

The Absence of a Basic Skill

Strom's observation cuts deep because it's verifiable and universal. Most people have never been formally shown how to breathe through panic, how to release chronic anxiety lodged in the chest, or how to speak to someone whose world has caved in. We learn calculus. We memorize state capitals. We practice emergency evacuation drills. And then we collide with real loss—our own or a loved one's—and discover we're improvising, often badly.

"If someone's heart stops, we've all been trained, we know what to do, 75% of us," Strom explains in the training introduction. "But if someone's heart breaks, we have total absence of knowledge. And this is why I created this training."

The work isn't academic. Strom's curriculum flows from a specific understanding: the way we relate to others mirrors exactly how we relate to ourselves. Our capacity to hold another person's grief depends on whether we've learned to hold our own. Our ability to communicate authentically in crisis depends on whether we can access our own breath, our own grounded nervous system, when pressure arrives. Healing anxiety isn't separate from deepening relationships—they're the same process.

Beyond Breathing Techniques

The training teaches practical breathwork methods: techniques to fall asleep, protocols to intercept panic before it blooms into a full attack, exercises to de-stress. But these are tools in service of something larger. Strom emphasizes a particular category of breathing work designed to dislodge pain that people have pushed down and stored in the chest cavity—not to create cathartic release in the moment, but permanent resolution. The goal is measurable: stress and anxiety levels drop enough that panic attacks stop recurring altogether.

What distinguishes this approach is its insistence that technique alone is insufficient. The training is 98% in-person, residential, conducted in the mountains near Salzburg Airport in Central Europe. Participants live together for a week, removed from distraction. The intimacy is intentional. You can't learn how to be with someone else's heartbreak in a Zoom breakout room. You learn it by sitting in a room with other humans who are doing the work, by practicing the communication tools Strom has developed, by experiencing the principles of emotional healing not as theory but as lived practice.

Designed for the People Who Need It

The training was explicitly priced and positioned so it wouldn't remain the province of the wealthy. Therapists, doctors, psychologists, and life coaches attend to deepen their practice with clients. Teachers come to bring these tools into schools. Parents come simply to know what to do the next time someone they love is suffering.

Because there will be a next time. "In case nobody told you, you're going to have another one if you're not in one now," Strom says, referring to emotional crisis. Life presents hard times. The only variable is whether you meet them prepared or panicked.

The training addresses a world that feels increasingly fractured. Strom notes that stress isn't decreasing—it's accelerating. Anxiety disorders are epidemic. Sleep deprivation has become normalized. Medication is often the only tool offered to people struggling with panic and insomnia. But as Strom poses it: "What if there was something else besides medication?" Not instead of professional help where needed, but something complementary, something that addresses root causes rather than just symptom management.

The Heart of the Work

At its foundation, the training treats emotional capacity the way paramedics treat CPR—as basic human literacy. Just as we decided that society benefits when ordinary people can respond to cardiac arrest, Strom argues that society transforms when ordinary people can respond to heartbreak, loneliness, and anxiety. When a therapist knows not just how to diagnose depression but how to teach a client to breathe through it. When a teacher knows how to help a traumatized student find ground. When a parent knows how to sit with their child's grief without flinching or trying to fix it away.

This is the premise: emotional first aid isn't a luxury offering or a therapy accessory. It's foundational. And the evidence lives in Strom's observation—that moment when 400 people sit in silence, realizing simultaneously that they've been trained for every crisis except the ones that actually break them.

Where to Go From Here

If you recognize yourself in that silence—if you've ever felt unprepared to help someone you love, or unequipped to help yourself—the framework Strom offers begins with breath. Specific, teachable techniques that rewire your nervous system, that create space between stimulus and response, that transform stored pain into release. It continues with communication: learning what to say, how to listen, when to sit quietly. And it culminates in a realization: that your own healing and your capacity to hold others are inextricably linked. The work you do on yourself ripples outward. The emotional first aid you learn becomes something you carry into every relationship, every crisis, every moment of connection.

[0:01] The truth of the matter is most of us

[0:03] don't know how to speak with each other,

[0:05] how to be with each other during an

[0:07] emotional crisis. And in case nobody

[0:09] told you, you're you're going to have

[0:11] another one if you're not in one now.

[0:13] Unfortunately, life

[0:15] uh presents us with many hard times.

[0:19] And yet we are taught nothing.

[0:22] When I travel and I speak to a

[0:24] conference,

[0:25] let's say there are 4 or 500 people in

[0:28] the audience, and I ask them,

[0:31] "Raise your hand if you know how to do

[0:34] CPR or heart massage.

[0:36] Someone has a heart attack, their heart

[0:38] stops, they fall over."

[0:41] Well, 75% of the audience knows what to

[0:43] do. They raise their hand proudly,

[0:46] and it's a great thing that we know what

[0:48] to do when someone's heart stops. And

[0:50] then I ask, "Now, raise your hand if

[0:52] when you were a young adult or a child,

[0:56] you were taught how to deal with the

[0:58] difficult emotions of someone else

[1:00] during a crisis or or your own?"

[1:04] Silence.

[1:05] Nobody raises their hand.

[1:08] It's unbelievable, this absence of

[1:10] knowledge that we have in our society.

[1:14] And so what this means is if someone's

[1:16] heart stops, we've all been trained, we

[1:18] know what to do, 75% of us.

[1:21] But if someone's heart breaks,

[1:24] we have total absence of knowledge.

[1:27] And this is why

[1:29] I created this training.

[1:31] And we didn't train it just for an elite

[1:35] group of wealthy people. We've priced it

[1:37] so the average person

[1:40] can afford to take this. We put it in a

[1:42] place that's easy to easily accessible

[1:45] in Europe. It's 20-minutes taxi ride

[1:48] from the Salzburg Airport in Central

[1:50] Europe.

[1:52] We do this together in person. 98% of

[1:55] this training

[1:56] is in person.

[1:57] And we do it in a beautiful place in the

[1:59] mountains

[2:01] where it's just us and we're not

[2:02] distracted by anything.

[2:05] And we live together essentially

[2:08] for a week.

[2:09] And so that way we can go deep because

[2:11] we don't just do breathing exercises.

[2:14] I will teach you breathing exercises

[2:17] that can help you fall asleep

[2:19] or if you feel like maybe you're having

[2:21] a panic attack

[2:23] to do before so you don't have a panic

[2:25] attack. And of course breathing

[2:28] exercises to de-stress.

[2:30] But more importantly perhaps is

[2:32] a certain kind of breathing exercise to

[2:35] alleviate the

[2:37] pain you're feeling that you've pushed

[2:39] down in your chest.

[2:41] Not just so that it comes out for the

[2:43] moment but it's out.

[2:45] So your level of stress and anxiety goes

[2:48] down so panic attacks just don't happen

[2:51] anymore.

[2:53] And

[2:54] also

[2:56] we're going to learn how to talk to each

[2:58] other

[2:59] sit with each other and look after each

[3:01] other

[3:02] when there is a crisis.

[3:06] Maybe right now you're not in a crisis

[3:08] but you'd like to learn what to do for

[3:10] the next time.

[3:11] Or maybe someone that you love very much

[3:14] is

[3:14] >> [snorts]

[3:15] >> suffering terribly from anxiety, panic

[3:17] attacks

[3:18] they can't sleep

[3:20] and the only thing they've been told

[3:21] what to do is to take medication.

[3:24] Well what if there was something else

[3:25] besides medication?

[3:29] So if you want to help yourself

[3:32] or those you love

[3:34] or your clients

[3:36] this is the place to come.

[3:38] A lot of therapists have taken this

[3:40] training and doctors

[3:42] to use with their patients.

[3:44] But a lot of people simply wanting to

[3:47] change their life

[3:49] also attend.

[3:51] So this is created for you.

[3:55] And I hope you can find

[3:57] time in your calendar

[3:59] to join us

[4:02] in the mountains of Austria

[4:06] as soon as possible.

[4:08] Because the world seems to me it's

[4:10] getting more stressful and not less.

[4:15] I look forward to working with you.

Standard breathing exercises help you relax in the moment, which is useful. Strom's work includes techniques specifically designed to permanently release chronic pain and anxiety you've stored in your chest—so panic attacks stop recurring altogether, not just temporarily ease during the exercise.
The training is intentionally 98% in-person and residential, conducted in the Austrian mountains. The immersive, community-based structure is built into how the learning works—you practice emotional communication with real people, not screens, and live together for a week.
No. While therapists, doctors, and life coaches attend to deepen their practice, the training is open to anyone—teachers, parents, or people simply wanting to understand themselves more deeply and support others authentically. It's designed for anyone who wants to learn emotional first aid.
Yes. The training teaches specific breathing protocols both to prevent panic attacks and to help you sleep better. But more importantly, it addresses the root causes by releasing the chronic anxiety lodged in your chest, so the underlying issues resolve rather than just being temporarily managed.
You'd learn Strom's template for one-on-one sessions, the communication tools and visualization principles behind his approach, and practical techniques you can teach your clients to manage anxiety, insomnia, and panic—offering them alternatives or complements to medication alone.
Society has decided that CPR is basic emergency literacy everyone should know. Strom argues we should extend that same logic to emotional crises, since everyone will experience heartbreak, anxiety, and loss—yet we're almost never taught how to navigate them or support others through them.
The training is seven days of intensive residential work. While you learn immediate techniques during that week, the lasting change—where panic attacks stop recurring—comes from consistent practice and from the deeper process of releasing stored emotional pain, which unfolds over time.
