Wake Up to Joy: A Color-Breath Meditation, Explained

Somewhere in the first minute of this meditation, you are asked to do something most people never do on purpose: breathe a color out of the body. The voice is calm and close, and it asks you to settle in, notice any tension or preoccupations, and let them go on the exhale. Then, one hue at a time, it guides you through red, orange, yellow, emerald green, blue, and lavender, gathers them into white light and a rainbow overhead, and finally places you in a field of sunflowers where joy is not something you wait for but the ground you walk on. Posted by the teacher Agapi Stassinopoulos on her YouTube channel on April 25, 2023, "Wake Up to the Joy of You | Meditation on Awakening Your Joy" runs just under seven minutes. It is short, but it has a clear architecture, and understanding that architecture is what turns a pleasant listen into a practice you can repeat on your own.

Lecture · 7 sections

What does the order of the colors actually do?

The meditation moves in a deliberate sequence, and the sequence is the point. It begins with release. Red is breathed out, the color leaving the body. Orange is then breathed in to energize and refresh, "clearing up any cobwebs around your head." Yellow follows as a second kind of intake, bringing clarity and enthusiasm, "piercing through anything inside you that feels disturbing." Emerald green is placed around the eyes as a healing energy that restores you to what the script calls your optimal health. Blue arrives as calmness and serenity, and the speaker suggests you can picture a still lake in front of you. Lavender comes last before the unifying images, attuning you "to your wisdom to your joy" and bringing "a presence of soulfulness."

Read as a whole, the order runs from clearing to energizing, then sharpening, healing, quieting, and attuning. Each step prepares the next. You cannot easily feel serenity while cobwebs still cloud the head, and the script seems to understand that. It puts the heavy clearing first and the subtle, receptive colors later.

It is worth being honest about what the recording does not do. It does not explain why these particular colors appear in this order, and it does not tie them to a named system. The script gives instructions and descriptions of effects and leaves the meaning to your own experience. That matters for anyone who approaches meditation skeptically. You do not need to adopt a color theory to follow the practice. You only need to track the breath and the image.

Why does each color get paired with a breath?

The breathing pattern carries as much of the design as the colors do. The first instruction is specific: take a deep breath and imagine red, and "as you exhale allow the color red to leave you." The very first color is released rather than taken in. The meditation starts by emptying, which fits its opening cue to release "any tension, any preoccupations, and any worries."

From there the pattern alternates in a way that is easy to follow once you notice it. On an exhale, something goes out. On an inhale, something comes in. Orange is drawn in on the inhale. Yellow is breathed in after an exhale that gently lets go. Green is inhaled, then exhaled, and the healing energy is attached to that outgoing breath. Blue is breathed in, lavender is inhaled to attune, and then the lavender is exhaled to make room for the white light.

For a practitioner, this rhythm does something useful. Each color occupies one complete breath cycle, so the meditation has a built-in tempo. You do not have to hold a visualization steady for minutes. You hold it for a breath or two, let it go, and move to the next. That tempo is forgiving for beginners and gives the visualization enough structure to keep the mind from wandering off into a to-do list.

What happens when the colors come together?

Around the three-minute mark, the script changes scale. The speaker asks you to imagine a white light "coming from the bottom of your feet all the way up your spine to the top of your head and circling around you." The white light is the connector. It runs the length of the body, which is the spine's role in the image, and then loops around the outside of you.

Then comes the gathering. You are asked to "take this white light and all the other colors that you brought together and imagine a huge rainbow that is forming an ark around you." The word ark is not a casual choice. Earlier, the opening asks you to evoke "an inner light that protects you fills you and surround you." The rainbow returns that protective idea in larger form, an enclosure rather than a point of light. The script says this rainbow is "showering you with a wonderful feeling of happiness and Joy about your life."

This is the structural peak of the meditation. Everything that came before, the releasing, the clearing, the healing, the calm, is gathered into a single shape. The image then does its emotional work: it moves the meditation from the interior of the body to the wider world of your life.

Why does the meditation move outdoors into a sunflower field?

The turn from breath to scene is the emotional center of the recording. The speaker asks you to "see yourself in a big open field filled with sunflowers," walking freely, "with your feet touching the ground and with a breeze caressing your face." The language is physical. Feet on the ground, wind on the face, the body present in an open space.

The speaker is specific about the feeling she wants you to bring. She describes "the joy of your aliveness" as "like a bright spring day when everything is blooming and fragrant," and she asks you to be "like a child freely playing in this field." The invitation is to play. The script adds layers of permission: bring friends if you wish, bring music you love, "make this scene as happy as you like," hear the birds, smell the fragrances of joy.

This section is where the title's promise, awakening joy, becomes a rehearsal. The meditation does not ask you to argue yourself into happiness. It asks you to imagine a body and a field in which happiness is natural, and to stay there long enough that the imagined scene feels familiar. Familiar scenes are easier to return to during a busy day.

How does the closing intention shape the rest of the day?

The final stretch shifts from image to intention, and it contains the meditation's most direct statement. The speaker says, "your essence and who you are in spirit is naturally filled with joy." She then asks you to picture yourself waking in the morning and "setting an intention that your joy will be present throughout your day," kindling it, and remembering, in her words, that "Joy is who you are."

"Joy is who you are," the speaker says in the guided meditation Agapi Stassinopoulos published on YouTube on April 25, 2023.

That line frames joy as identity rather than reward. The meditation does not treat joy as something you earn after the tasks are finished. It treats joy as already present and asks you to remember it, intend it, and keep it vivid. The script says to "keep anything that awakens that joy in you vivid in your imagination," which gives you a practical instruction: whatever image or sensation stirred joy during the session is what you carry forward.

The recording ends with a return to breath. You take a deep breath, imagine the big rainbow embracing you, and exhale "with a joyful sound, ah." Then you open your arms and make the sound once more. The closing line, "you're ready to have a day filled with joy," turns the meditation toward the workday ahead.

How can you practice this meditation at home?

The recording is short enough to fit before breakfast, which suits its morning-intention framing. A workable way to practice it, based closely on the script, looks like this:

  • Sit in a comfortable position. Take a breath, and on the exhale release tension, preoccupations, and worries.
  • Settle into your heart and evoke an inner light that protects, fills, and surrounds you.
  • Work through the colors one breath at a time: red out, orange in, yellow in, green out, blue in, lavender in, then out.
  • Let the white light travel from your feet up your spine and around you, then build the rainbow arc overhead.
  • Step into the sunflower field. Feel the ground, the breeze, and the spring brightness, and let the scene be as happy as you want.
  • Set one short sentence of intention for the day, such as keeping your joy present through your work.
  • Close with a long breath, open your arms, and exhale with a joyful "ah."

Keep the practice simple. The script is not demanding, and the color cues are not a test. If one color feels vivid and another feels flat, follow what the breath actually does rather than forcing the imagery. The meditation is built to be repeated, and repetition is where a short recording like this begins to change the tone of an ordinary morning.

Where to go from here

If this meditation has caught your attention, start with the recording itself. Listen to it once without taking notes, then try it the next morning with your eyes closed and a timer nearby. After a few days, notice which color or image returned to you during the day, since the script itself asks you to keep whatever awakens joy vivid. The project page linked in the video's description offers more context on the title "Wake Up to the Joy of You," and the video is the best place to hear the speaker's own voice and pacing. Use this write-up as a map, and let the practice do the rest.

It is a guided visualization of just under seven minutes in which the breath is paired with red, orange, yellow, emerald green, blue, and lavender, then white light and a rainbow, a sunflower field, and a morning intention. Agapi Stassinopoulos posted it on YouTube on April 25, 2023.
Sit comfortably, release tension on the exhale, and settle into your heart with an inner light. Give each color one breath cycle, let white light and a rainbow surround you, step into a joyful scene, set a one-sentence intention for the day, and close with an open-armed exhale.
According to the script, red is released on the exhale, orange energizes and clears the head, and yellow brings clarity and enthusiasm. Green is described as healing energy, blue as calm and serenity, and lavender as attuning you to wisdom and joy. The recording does not tie these colors to a named system.
Yes, the meditation itself is framed around the morning. It asks you to picture yourself waking, setting an intention that joy will be present throughout the day, and keeping that joy alive as the day goes on.
The video runs 6 minutes and 38 seconds, which makes it short enough to fit into a brief morning routine. Its length is part of what makes it easy to repeat.
The script sets up protection early, asking you to evoke an inner light that protects, fills, and surrounds you. Later, the rainbow is described as forming an ark around you, which returns that protective idea in a larger image while also showering you with happiness.
