The Mind as Filter: Seeing Through the Ink Blot of Ego

Sounds True

À regarder · 8

Hold a glass of water up to the light and ask what it actually is. Water, says the eye. Hydrogen and oxygen, says the chemist. Electrons, protons, quarks, says the physicist, and then the trail thins into a field of light that is not water at all. That slide from the obvious to the unknowable is the spine of this conversation, in which the teacher argues that what you call "the world" is largely something your mind has projected onto raw perception, and that the only way out of that projection is a kind of clear-eyed seeing rather than a better argument. The episode, titled "Transcending the Multiple Layers of Mind" on Sounds True's channel, treats the ego not as a moral failing to be scolded but as a filter with its own preferences, fears, and self-image, and it asks the listener to notice that filter operating in real time.

The setting is a talk, not a lecture hall, and the teacher pushes his audience with questions, pauses, and an ear for the room. He lets the listener's confusion sit before answering it. That rhythm matters, because the teaching is less a set of claims to memorize than a demonstration you are meant to catch yourself in.

Lecture · 7 sections

What happens when you hold water in your hand and ask what it is?

The teacher's favorite demonstration is simple. He asks the listener to hold water and then offers a multiple-choice question: is it water, H2O molecules, hydrogen and oxygen atoms, electrons, neutrons and protons, quarks and leptons and bosons, or "light, quantum field, nothing, unmanifest"? His point is that each answer is valid within its own frame of looking, and that the mind wants to choose one as the real one. "It is all of those things. It is none of those things," he says, and the room laughs at the impossibility of the question.

What he is actually pointing at is the habit of treating the level of description you happen to be using as the true level. Your eyes see water. A microscope sees molecules. A more powerful instrument sees something else. The teacher's insistence is that no one gets to say which of these is "really" the world, because each depends on the lens through which it is observed. He presses the logic hard: if the molecules "have laws that join them together so that they form water molecules," and your eyes register that as water, then water is an event that happens in the meeting of the instrument and the thing.

Why do the eyes decide what is real?

This is where the argument turns from physics to perception. The teacher describes the eyes themselves as a kind of pair of glasses, built from the same molecules as the things they look at and tuned to a particular species' range of seeing. He compares them to a fly's eyes, which he says see in pieces rather than as one scene, and he compares the human mind to a camera. "If you take a picture with a camera all the time, go back to the same spot, it's going to take the same picture. That's what's happening with you," he says. The mind, in this telling, behind the eyes is a filter that stamps every image with its habits.

The sharpest line of the early section makes the point almost mechanically. "You see what you see because you want to see it. Everybody sees something different," he says. One tree becomes an obsession for one person, while another sees a forest and dismisses it. The teacher then adds, with some humor, that he meant people, not trees, because the same mechanism governs relationships. What fixates you is not a neutral fact; it is a need.

"You see what you see because you want to see it. Everybody sees something different." (Michael A. Singer, early in the episode)

This is the core claim of the piece. The world as you experience it is not a passive reception of what is out there. It is a finished product, assembled by preferences, fears, and self-concept, and then presented back to you as if it were given. The teacher calls this the discrepancy between what the scientists describe and what you interact with, and he names the discrepancy "ego." He is not saying the physical world is an illusion in the sense that it doesn't exist. He is saying that the particular world your mind hands you is not the one that is there.

Is the mind a Rorschach test?

The image that carries the second half of the talk is the ink blot. Late in the episode the teacher returns to it, describing how the same blot is read as a different shape by each viewer, and how that is exactly how the mind handles the outside world. "That's how I want you to see the outside," he says, meaning as a shape you should recognize as a projection rather than a fact to be defended. The mind reads an ambiguous field and then insists the reading is the field.

He treats the instinct to defend that reading as the root of most suffering. People build identities around their interpretations, argue for them, and feel wounded when others read the blot differently. The teacher observes, with a wry tone, how much of human conflict is two people certain they are seeing the same thing and discovering they are not. The lesson is not to adopt a relativist shrug. It is to see the reading as a reading, and then to notice who is doing the reading.

Why can't you argue your way out of the illusion?

The talk draws on a line the teacher attributes to the Third Patriarch of Zen: "Do not argue for the existence of things and do not argue for the nonexistence of things." He reads this as a warning against the debate trap. If you ask whether the glass is water or molecules, the argument has no winner, and the same goes for whether the world exists or not. The mind loves this kind of contest because it keeps the mind in charge of the question.

He is blunt that intellect cannot dissolve the ego on its own. "Don't belittle it. Don't kid yourself. Don't think you can talk your way out of it. Or just say you're above it," he says near the opening. "The ego is very, very strong. The ego is the essence of Maya." Maya, in his usage, is not a fantasy but the condition of living inside a projected world and taking it for the whole. The phrase "If you're in it, you're of it" sums up his refusal to let the listener stand outside the problem and admire it.

The description of the episode frames the same point in terms of the self: the voice in your head narrates, judges, and tells you what things mean, and most people believe they are that voice. The teacher's move is to ask who is hearing it. That question is not a clever trick. It is a shift of attention from the content of the mind to the awareness that observes the content.

How do you wake up from the projection?

The turn toward practice comes when the teacher asks his own question outright: "So how do you wake up?" His answer is a single word he keeps returning to. "It's this thing called clarity." Clarity, for him, is not an achievement of thinking but a quality of seeing that becomes possible when the mind stops insisting on its interpretation. He says that "it takes very, very clear eyes, clear consciousness to realize it is not what it appears to be," and that the clarity is what allows you to see the projection for what it is.

The practical implication is that you cannot build a spiritual life on top of the same filter that created the problem. The teacher says you cannot simply see the world the way you see it and then adjust to it. You have to notice that what you are seeing has been colored, and that the coloring is yours. He compares this to the magic glasses at a show: once you know the lenses are shaping the scene, the scene does not disappear, but you stop mistaking it for the bare fact.

The description adds the element that makes this workable for ordinary people: relaxing and letting the mind pass through. In this framing you do not wrestle the thoughts to silence. You allow them to move across the screen of awareness, and over time their grip loosens because you are no longer identifying with each one. Awareness, the seat of consciousness, becomes the place you rest, rather than another thought in the stream.

What does this mean for a life that feels real?

The teaching does not ask you to reject the world or pretend that the people and trees in front of you are unreal. It asks you to relate to them as they are, not as your mind insists they must be. The teacher's own images, from the glass of water to the trees, are meant to make that distinction visible in daily perception. If you can catch yourself reading the ink blot, you have already moved from the mind's frame to the awareness behind it. That movement is the whole practice.

Where to go from here

If this conversation landed, the best next step is to return to the moment of perception. Choose something ordinary, a cup, a face, a sound, and ask what you are adding to it: a preference, a fear, a story about what it means. Then ask who is noticing the addition. The teacher's own counsel is patience. The ego is strong, and clarity arrives as a gradual loosening rather than a sudden break. For readers who want the longer development of these ideas, the author's book The Untethered Soul is the book the video description names as his best-known work, and the broader body of his teaching is the place to keep following the thread.

[0:46] >> Mhm, chakra.

[0:48] Grand masters.

[0:52] The path

[0:54] is much more subtle

[0:56] than human beings tend to be.

[0:59] They talk about it as neither doing or

[1:01] not doing. You lost everybody in that.

[1:04] It seems how can it be neither doing or

[1:05] not doing?

[1:07] That's the essence of it.

[1:09] Eventually, you will wake up totally to

[1:12] realize how strong the ego is.

[1:16] Don't belittle it.

[1:18] Don't kid yourself.

[1:20] Don't think you can talk your way out of

[1:21] it.

[1:23] Or just say you're above it.

[1:26] The ego is very, very strong. The ego is

[1:28] the essence of Maya. What does that

[1:30] mean?

[1:31] It means that this world as you see it

[1:35] is not

[1:36] as you appear to see it.

[1:39] It's not like you get to see it the way

[1:41] you see it and then do something to

[1:43] adjust to it, do something to be

[1:45] spiritual.

[1:46] If you're in it, you're of it.

[1:50] It takes very, very clear eyes, clear

[1:53] consciousness to realize

[1:56] it is not what it appears to be.

[1:59] Period.

[2:01] The amazing part is you sent your

[2:03] scientist out

[2:05] and said, "What is out there and where

[2:07] did it come from?"

[2:09] And I swear to you, they came back and

[2:11] said, "Nothing."

[2:13] They did. They came back and said, "No,

[2:15] there are no pianos, there are no

[2:17] people, there are no trees.

[2:20] It's an illusion.

[2:21] There's just this field of energy.

[2:24] You want to call it God? They give it a

[2:26] neater name, quantum field, you know.

[2:28] Call it what you want. There's a field

[2:30] of energy, a field of light.

[2:33] Really, a field of light. So, the energy

[2:35] is light, light is energy. A field of

[2:37] light, undifferentiated,

[2:40] omnipresent light.

[2:42] That is what Einstein, the quantum

[2:44] physicist, everyone has gone down and

[2:47] looked as far as they could

[2:50] with the eyes of clarity

[2:52] and they said, "That's what's out

[2:53] there."

[2:54] That's what it is.

[2:56] The discrepancy between that and what

[2:59] you interact with

[3:01] is ego.

[3:03] You see what you see because you want to

[3:06] see it.

[3:07] Everybody sees something different. Not

[3:10] they see form,

[3:12] but one form jumps out at you and it

[3:14] means nothing to the other person.

[3:17] One tree is so important to you. It's oh

[3:19] my god, I I'm losing sleep over it.

[3:22] And the other person sees millions of

[3:24] trees and that's just one of the trees.

[3:26] And by the way, I didn't mean trees, I

[3:28] meant people.

[3:29] Because that's how it is.

[3:31] You are seeing what you're seeing

[3:33] because you need to see it. You want to

[3:36] see it. It is not what's there.

[3:39] What's there is what the scientists say

[3:41] are there. The scientists are right.

[3:44] What is there is nothing.

[3:45] And they can explain to you how it went

[3:48] from nothing

[3:50] to appear to be this.

[3:52] But nothing times nothing is nothing.

[3:54] And nothing plus nothing is nothing. And

[3:57] nothing rearranged by nothing is

[3:58] nothing. It's still nothing.

[4:01] Example I always give you,

[4:03] hold water in your hand. Just so your

[4:05] mind gives up here. Hold water in your

[4:07] hand.

[4:09] I'm going to ask you, honestly,

[4:11] multiple choice.

[4:13] A, in your hand you have water.

[4:15] B, you have H2O molecules. C, you have

[4:20] hydrogen and oxygen atoms.

[4:22] D, you have electron, neutrons, and

[4:24] protons. E, you have quarks, leptons,

[4:28] and bosons.

[4:30] F,

[4:31] light.

[4:32] Quantum field, nothing, unmanifest.

[4:36] That's what's going on.

[4:38] That you can understand.

[4:40] Your mind can understand the logic of

[4:42] that.

[4:43] It is all of those things.

[4:45] It is none of those things.

[4:48] It is How can it be everything at once?

[4:51] How can it be electron, neutrons, and

[4:52] protons plus hydrogen and oxygen atoms?

[4:56] Well, because we have this way of saying

[4:58] that if electron, neutrons, and protons

[4:59] hang out with each other a certain way,

[5:02] we call that hydrogen

[5:03] and oxygen atoms.

[5:06] Okay? And if the hydrogen and oxygen

[5:08] atoms, on their own, having nothing to

[5:10] do with you, have laws that join them

[5:13] together so that they form

[5:15] water molecules, they form molecules,

[5:18] and your eyes see that as water. This is

[5:20] an illusion. It's not water.

[5:23] But, look at it through a microscope.

[5:24] Where's the water?

[5:25] I'm begging you, wake up. It's right

[5:27] before you all the time.

[5:30] And so, you basically realize, if I look

[5:32] at it not through the microscope, it's

[5:34] water. If I look at it through the

[5:35] microscope, theoretically, it's

[5:37] molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. Which

[5:40] is it?

[5:41] You don't get to do that.

[5:43] The point is, it's not water.

[5:46] And it's not hydrogen and oxygen or

[5:48] It's not hydrogen oxygen. It's not

[5:50] electrons or protons.

[5:52] It's not quarks or leptons, bosons.

[5:54] It's just light. It stayed light.

[5:57] The rest is an illusion.

[6:00] Why is it an illusion? Well, if you go

[6:02] to a magic show

[6:04] and they have you wear a special glasses

[6:07] and you could do it without the glasses,

[6:08] but let's say you wear special glasses

[6:10] and it makes everything look different.

[6:13] Everything's going on is different.

[6:15] What's that all about? It's because the

[6:18] illusion is created by the glasses

[6:20] you're wearing.

[6:21] Well, these hydrogen and oxygen atoms

[6:24] and molecules

[6:26] are being looked at through your eyes,

[6:28] which are made of molecules.

[6:30] And therefore, the way your eyes distort

[6:33] what you're looking at, lie to you,

[6:34] illusion, what you're looking at, it

[6:37] appears to be that these molecules are

[6:38] water.

[6:40] That's the game. That's God's game. You

[6:42] got to bust the guy.

[6:44] All right? He created an illusion. Do

[6:46] you understand that? If you were not

[6:48] looking at it through the exact eyes

[6:50] that you're looking at, it would not

[6:51] look like that.

[6:52] Well, which way is it? It's not.

[6:55] >> [laughter]

[6:55] >> All right? It's not. If I've got these

[6:58] magic glasses and I put them on and they

[7:00] create this tremendous illusion, like

[7:02] our our virtual reality request. Well,

[7:05] which is it? Is it when you look through

[7:07] there or when you pick it up and look?

[7:09] Which is it? Well, it depends on the

[7:11] eyes you're looking through.

[7:13] Okay? Just depends on what you're

[7:14] looking through. So, these eyeballs that

[7:17] got created not by chance, by the way,

[7:21] perfectly created for the game, so that

[7:24] when consciousness looks through them,

[7:26] it sees this.

[7:28] Take the eyeballs out and see what you

[7:29] see.

[7:31] Okay? Nothing. Put magic glasses over

[7:33] the eyeballs, see what you see. It

[7:35] changes. Well, which is it? It depends

[7:39] on what you're looking through. If

[7:40] you're looking through the regular

[7:42] microscope, it's molecules. If you're

[7:43] looking through an electron microscope,

[7:45] it's it's atoms. If you're looking

[7:46] through whatever.

[7:48] But you don't get to ask which is it

[7:50] really.

[7:51] You don't get to say it's really the way

[7:52] I see it through my eyeballs, but it's

[7:54] not the way I see it through a

[7:55] microscope. This is what you have to do

[7:58] with your mind.

[7:59] You have to realize what you're looking

[8:01] at is an illusion. It's not there or not

[8:04] there. See that? That's what they talk

[8:05] about, right? They the third of the

[8:07] patriarchs says, "Do not argue for the

[8:08] existence of things and do not argue for

[8:10] the nonexistence of things." That's like

[8:13] saying, "I want you to argue. I want to

[8:15] debate. Is it electron neutron or

[8:17] protons? Or is it atoms?

[8:19] Is it molecules or is it water? Go on,

[8:21] debate it."

[8:23] No one wins.

[8:25] Don't get into that. Is it there or is

[8:27] it not there?

[8:28] I think already you see there's no

[8:30] answer to that. So you can't build your

[8:33] life around this illusion that you're

[8:35] seeing through your eyeballs. But that's

[8:37] what happens. Because you see it the

[8:40] specific way you see it and because our

[8:42] eyeballs are tuned

[8:44] very similar to each other, slightly

[8:45] different than a fly's eyeballs. Right?

[8:47] You look at it through a fly's eyeballs.

[8:49] You have like 86 different facets and

[8:52] and 8,000 you see little pieces.

[8:54] >> [laughter]

[8:55] >> No animal sees it the way you see it.

[8:57] Okay?

[8:58] So don't think for a moment that what

[9:01] you see is real.

[9:03] It is just what you see at this moment.

[9:06] Okay? And what proves it more, it's not

[9:09] just that you look through your

[9:10] eyeballs. You wished you were actually

[9:12] looking through your eyeballs. Then at

[9:14] least you would see what your eyeballs

[9:16] see. A camera, like a camera. Camera, if

[9:18] you take a picture with a camera all the

[9:19] time, go back to the same spot, it's

[9:20] going to take the same picture. That's

[9:22] what's happening with you. You have

[9:23] behind your eyeballs a filter.

[9:26] Literally, I slip a filter in. I have a

[9:28] many different colors.

[9:30] You put in a happy filter in, everything

[9:32] you look at looks happy. Put a sad

[9:34] filter in, look at the exact same thing

[9:36] next day, it sad.

[9:38] Okay? This is unbelievable. So, you have

[9:40] the filter of mind, which is looking

[9:43] through the filter of eyes, which is

[9:45] looking at nothing.

[9:47] Whatever level you're looking at it. So,

[9:50] you wake up and you realize this is not

[9:52] real. It's just not real, period. And

[9:56] so, what happens is because you keep

[9:58] seeing it persistently the same, despite

[10:01] your filter, although your filter

[10:02] filters it, but at least your eyes tend

[10:04] to see it the same, it comes in

[10:06] and you build a whole thing inside your

[10:09] mind. As I'm going to cry. You build a

[10:11] whole thing inside your beautiful mind.

[10:13] You have a beautiful mind. A mind that

[10:15] was able to build microscopes and

[10:17] telescopes and and split atoms and oh my

[10:19] god, you're such a brilliant mind. It

[10:21] can study the nature of things. But

[10:23] that's not what you do with it.

[10:25] This comes in exactly the way you see it

[10:28] through the filter of your emotions and

[10:30] your stuff, and then you build a whole

[10:33] thing off I mean, it's so big, this

[10:36] thing you built.

[10:37] It's called ego.

[10:39] Self-concept.

[10:41] A mental image of what's going on.

[10:45] That's what the self-concept is. It's

[10:47] not a thing. It's a mental thing.

[10:50] It doesn't exist in the world of atoms.

[10:52] In your mind, which is at a whole

[10:55] 'nother level than this world that we

[10:56] just spent all our time talking about,

[10:58] you have this mind and you have free

[11:01] will.

[11:02] And what you did with that free will is

[11:05] build this thing, this menagerie inside

[11:08] your mind that says this is the way I am

[11:11] and this is the way she is and this is

[11:12] the way that is and that's the purpose

[11:13] of this and that's the meaning of this

[11:15] and just a whole thought universe

[11:19] you built inside your mind, which is the

[11:22] self-concept, which is the ego, which is

[11:24] the ego mind and so on. And now, when

[11:26] you look out,

[11:28] you don't even look through your eyes.

[11:31] Really. I mean, yes, you're looking

[11:32] through your eyes, but you have to first

[11:33] your consciousness has to first look

[11:35] through that entire menagerie of mind

[11:38] that you built. I like this. I don't

[11:39] like this. I don't like what he's doing.

[11:40] I don't feel good. This whole thing. And

[11:43] then you look through it and you look

[11:45] out through the [clears throat] eyes and

[11:46] everything looks different. People used

[11:48] to like you all right today.

[11:50] People used to not like you. Yeah, not

[11:51] so bad.

[11:53] I watched a movie a year ago. I didn't

[11:54] like it. People write us. I read The

[11:56] Untethered Soul 3 4 5 years ago,

[11:58] whatever it is. I must not have been

[11:59] ready. Cuz I just didn't get anything

[12:01] from it. I didn't finish it right. I

[12:03] picked it up the other day. Oh my god.

[12:05] I've read it three times since.

[12:07] And what is that about? Your mind.

[12:10] It is not about your eyes. They see it

[12:13] the same. It is not about what's

[12:15] happening out there cuz nothing's

[12:17] happening out there. It is about the

[12:19] fact that you have built this thing. I

[12:21] wish you would just see its size. It's

[12:23] so big you can't see it. Just like a

[12:25] fish doesn't know it's in the water. A

[12:27] fish does not know it's in the water.

[12:29] Even I don't know if the fish knows. But

[12:30] if they know anything, they don't know

[12:32] they're in the water. Why? They've never

[12:33] been out.

[12:35] So their frame of reference doesn't see

[12:37] not water. Doesn't see water or not

[12:39] water because it's never seen anything

[12:41] else. You have never seen anything else

[12:43] but your mind.

[12:45] Do you understand that? Don't you kid

[12:46] yourself.

[12:47] You've never seen anything else but your

[12:49] mind. When you're kidding yourself, you

[12:50] say, "Oh, this part of my mind's nicer

[12:52] than the other parts." It's still this

[12:53] the same stupid game.

[12:55] It's the same stupid game.

[12:57] It's a game of self-concept. Right?

[12:59] Well, I've grown a lot. I like everybody

[13:01] and I'm fine. And if I have anything

[13:03] inside of me that What is that? What's

[13:05] all that noise? Why is it talking?

[13:08] What's that got to do with what's going

[13:09] on? Nothing. Ever. Has nothing. First of

[13:13] all, there's nothing going on. So

[13:15] therefore, it can't have anything to do

[13:16] with what's going on. We said to you,

[13:17] there's nothing down there.

[13:19] Reality. Scientists have found reality.

[13:21] Newsflash, it's not there.

[13:24] Okay? It's just a field of light. It's a

[13:25] field of energy. And everything's coming

[13:27] out of that.

[13:29] And then the consciousness tries to look

[13:31] at it through this field of energy made

[13:32] these eyes, but it can't even do that.

[13:34] Because in the mind, mind, understand

[13:37] mind.

[13:39] That my mind's bothering me. No, the one

[13:41] who's saying my mind is bothering me is

[13:43] your mind also.

[13:44] Just as I showed you there's these

[13:46] layers of the quantum field, then the

[13:48] quarks, leptons, the bosons, and then

[13:50] the electron neutrons protons, and then

[13:52] the atoms, and then the molecules, you

[13:54] know, it's like there, they're all at

[13:56] the same time.

[13:57] Your mind

[13:59] Your mind has all these layers.

[14:02] I went through this before. Freud broke

[14:04] them up in id, ego, superego, but he

[14:06] never went beyond. You have these lower

[14:08] layers of your mind, and your body

[14:09] layers, and all this noise from your

[14:11] body and stuff like that, okay? There's

[14:14] just a base layer that the mind receives

[14:16] all this stuff and builds all these

[14:17] concepts. I I don't like this. I don't

[14:19] my body like this. I like this taste. I

[14:20] like that. You know, you just build all

[14:22] this garbage in your mind about with

[14:24] your body. You have a body. Why do you

[14:26] need to have a mind body?

[14:28] You just don't understand, all right?

[14:30] You have this body, and it will talk to

[14:31] you. It will let you know things, but

[14:33] you think about it instead. You build a

[14:34] mind body, and you actually live in your

[14:36] mind body, not your body, okay? Then you

[14:38] build concepts, and you build the rights

[14:41] and wrongs and views and opinions and

[14:43] what I like and what I don't like, all

[14:44] right? And then you build a spiritually

[14:46] ego. Ooh, that one's the worst of all.

[14:48] You build on top of all that. I'm pure,

[14:51] and I'm good, and I'm clear, and I'm

[14:53] clearer than she or she is, and I'm a

[14:55] teacher and I the thing, and I can help

[14:57] people. Whoa. Whoa. If it's talking to

[15:01] you, it's not you, and I assure you that

[15:03] one's talking to you. Do you get that

[15:05] straight? That's talking to you just

[15:06] like any other one, and you just keep

[15:09] building these layers of mind is big as

[15:11] God. It's infinite. You were created in

[15:14] the image of God, and one thing he gave

[15:16] you is this phenomenal mind. He got a

[15:18] phenomenal mind. He dreamt all this up.

[15:20] Still not here, but he dreamt it all up.

[15:22] So, you have dreamt up all this in your

[15:24] mind layer upon layer upon layer upon

[15:26] layer. And then when you consciousness,

[15:28] which is God, looks down to experience

[15:32] creation, it can't see it.

[15:34] It looks at it through the veil of mind,

[15:36] and that's what it sees.

[15:38] So, spirituality is not about any

[15:41] [clears throat] of this.

[15:42] True spirituality is about realizing

[15:46] I am the consciousness

[15:48] and I can't see.

[15:50] Cuz if I look down, I see mind. That's

[15:53] what I see. Period. That's a clear

[15:55] consciousness. When I look down, I see

[15:58] mind. Not this mind, that mind, happy

[16:00] mind, sad mind, moody mind, not feeling

[16:03] good mind, not feeling good. No, no, no,

[16:05] no, no.

[16:06] When I look down,

[16:08] I see this ocean of mind.

[16:11] And when I look out through the ocean of

[16:13] mind, I think I'm looking at reality,

[16:16] but I'm not. I'm looking at the

[16:18] reflection of my mind.

[16:20] I don't see a color, I see a color I

[16:22] like.

[16:23] I don't see a person, I see a friend or

[16:25] an enemy.

[16:26] I don't see a political statement, I see

[16:28] what I believe in or I don't believe in.

[16:31] All you see is yourself.

[16:33] You're just seeing the reflection of

[16:36] yourself. And I'll sit there and say,

[16:37] "But my way is right." That's hilarious.

[16:41] If your mind is in there saying, talking

[16:43] first of all, if it's talking, it's

[16:45] already your mind.

[16:46] But if you're looking down at that mind

[16:48] and it's got all these philosophies and

[16:50] views and opinions and politics and say,

[16:52] "I'm right." That's hilarious.

[16:55] That's hilarious. But don't you want to

[16:57] hear what I'm right about? No.

[16:59] How you like that?

[17:00] If you think you're right, I'm only

[17:03] hearing about what you think. I don't

[17:04] want to hear what you think. Everybody's

[17:05] got a thought. Everybody's got a mind.

[17:07] Everybody's got an opinion. But boy,

[17:09] yours is adamant, isn't it? I'm right.

[17:11] This is right. And I'll prove it to you.

[17:13] That's mind. That's just the illusion of

[17:15] mind. And you're looking down. The

[17:17] reason the world is the way it is is cuz

[17:20] we are interacting with it at this

[17:22] particular level and everyone thinks

[17:24] they're right.

[17:26] Everyone thinks they're right.

[17:27] Okay? Hey, if I'm hungry and my family's

[17:29] hungry, it's okay to steal some bread

[17:30] and take some things. It's not wrong.

[17:32] I'm supposed to feed my family. People

[17:34] think like that. Fine. Whatever you

[17:37] think. Whatever you think. You can think

[17:39] any way you want. How can you argue with

[17:42] how somebody thinks? They think any way

[17:44] they want.

[17:45] It's like

[17:46] everybody's wrong.

[17:49] Everybody's wrong. Why? Because they

[17:51] just made this stuff up in their mind,

[17:54] put it together in a way that makes

[17:55] sense to them, and then they're looking

[17:57] out through the eyes and projecting that

[18:00] onto what they're seeing.

[18:02] It's a magic show. It's a joke. God has

[18:04] played a major joke with himself.

[18:07] He wanted to have fun with himself, so

[18:08] this is what he did. He made quite What

[18:11] is a video game? Hey, your video games

[18:12] aren't always so nice, are they? They

[18:14] got all kinds of people getting killed,

[18:15] all kinds of stuff going on. You were

[18:17] left to make video Well, God made one,

[18:18] too.

[18:20] It's what he did.

[18:21] And basically, your mind is that. You

[18:24] did that. Then you project it onto the

[18:26] world, and then you want to talk to me

[18:27] about spirituality. Now you want to talk

[18:29] to me about righteousness. Now you want

[18:30] to talk to me about who's right and

[18:32] who's wrong.

[18:34] As Lao Tzu said, "A wise man never

[18:35] argues." Why? Because they know this.

[18:38] How do you like that? That's why. What

[18:40] are you going to argue? The person's got

[18:41] their mind. That's what they made

[18:43] [laughter] up. See who made yours up.

[18:44] Right? It's ridiculous. Are you willing

[18:47] to realize you are not right or wrong?

[18:50] It's just absurd.

[18:52] The game is dumb.

[18:54] The whole thing. All right? It's not

[18:56] based on reality. It's based on

[18:58] illusion, delusion, and error. Now you

[19:00] understand Maya? Have I talked enough?

[19:02] That's what everything I talked to you

[19:04] about way back in the Upanishads is what

[19:07] they mean by Maya.

[19:09] This is God's Maya.

[19:11] And then you you make it way by building

[19:14] Maya within your own mind. That's all

[19:15] That's only thing that can be in your

[19:17] mind is Maya.

[19:18] Cuz it is interpreting what you thought

[19:20] you saw and putting it together in the

[19:22] way you think you want to think about

[19:23] it. All right, what's your alternative?

[19:26] The alternative is this thing called

[19:27] spirituality.

[19:29] Real spirituality. Not pseudo

[19:31] spirituality.

[19:33] It is realizing, you know,

[19:35] that's true.

[19:37] But we just said it's true. I have built

[19:40] all these concepts, views, and opinions

[19:42] in my mind and fight for them just like

[19:44] everybody else fights and become part of

[19:47] the problem, if you will. And I do

[19:49] project

[19:51] how I see things in my mind out onto the

[19:53] world.

[19:55] That's what they are. You know, somebody

[19:56] sees a snake, "Ew, it's disgusting. I

[19:58] don't want to get near it." Somebody

[19:59] else, "Wow, what a fascinating

[20:01] creature." Which is it?

[20:05] Whatever you say it is, man.

[20:08] Really what it is is the quantum field

[20:10] manifesting.

[20:12] It's the way you are perceiving the

[20:13] quantum field at this moment. So, you

[20:15] wake up. Who's willing to live at that

[20:18] level? It's not easy.

[20:21] Christ said you must die to be reborn.

[20:22] Now you know what he's talking about.

[20:24] You have to die of the entire

[20:27] self-concept

[20:28] and of the habit of looking out and

[20:31] projecting yourself onto the world and

[20:33] then fighting with yourself. Trying to

[20:35] get yourself or stay away from yourself.

[20:37] Just hilarious. The world is a mirror.

[20:39] That's what they say. The world is a

[20:40] mirror.

[20:42] Very few people understand that. It's a

[20:44] mirror for the same reason in the book.

[20:46] I make a thing out of the Rorschach

[20:48] test. I really got into it, okay? All

[20:51] right, fine. There's this ink blot.

[20:53] Well, an ink blot is nothing. It's just

[20:54] an ink blot.

[20:55] But why does it work? Because somebody

[20:57] projects what they're used to seeing in

[20:59] their mind onto the ink blot. Here's

[21:01] somebody fighting. Here's somebody

[21:02] having sex. Here's somebody my husband

[21:04] leaving me. Here whatever the heck it

[21:06] is. See it? There's the line. and God,

[21:08] why are you showing me that? It's

[21:09] painful for me. How did you know? It's

[21:12] like, it's an ink blot, all right? And

[21:15] the next guy that comes in, he goes see

[21:16] something else and see something else.

[21:18] I asked the question in the book, how is

[21:20] it that the same ink blot works for all

[21:22] the patients?

[21:23] Isn't that miraculous? What an ink blot,

[21:25] who painted that thing?

[21:28] It's just a stupid ink blot. You are

[21:31] projecting your mind onto the ink blot,

[21:33] that's why it works for everybody. The

[21:35] world is exactly the same. It is exactly

[21:39] the same. You're doing the same thing.

[21:42] There's nothing out there.

[21:44] Yes, your eyes make it look the average

[21:46] to look like something fine, but you

[21:48] understand underneath even but first

[21:50] that's nothing. It's just what you

[21:51] happen to see. But underneath it is not

[21:54] even that way. But when you see it, you

[21:56] can't see what's there. You can't just

[21:58] see. You project yourself onto the ink

[22:01] blot of life.

[22:02] That's how I want you to see the outside

[22:04] world. It's a giant ink blot.

[22:06] It is nothing. That which means

[22:08] something to you means nothing to her.

[22:10] Just like the ink blot. If one patient

[22:12] walked in who's freaking out over the

[22:14] husband and wife fighting, the parents

[22:16] fighting on the ink blot, somebody else

[22:18] with sex, somebody else with whatever,

[22:20] death. It's death. She sees black, it's

[22:22] death. Why are you showing me right? If

[22:24] they walked in and heard what the other

[22:26] patient was saying, they'd go, he's

[22:27] crazy.

[22:29] That's not there. How could you see

[22:30] that? Hear me?

[22:32] Wake up.

[22:35] Do not continue to live in this delusion

[22:37] and error.

[22:38] So how do you wake up?

[22:40] >> [laughter]

[22:43] >> You can't change the world to make the

[22:45] It's not It's not a question of getting

[22:47] somebody to paint an ink blot that looks

[22:48] good to you.

[22:49] Is it? That's not the solution to the

[22:52] That's not the purpose that Mr. or Mrs.

[22:54] Rorschach, whoever name was, developed

[22:56] this ink blot thing. Let the patient

[22:58] come in and tell you what you want it to

[22:59] look like and have an artist, like one

[23:01] of the sketch artists that the police

[23:02] have, to do the ink blots so it looks

[23:04] exactly the way so when a person looks

[23:05] at it they feel good. How's that for a

[23:07] solution? They're good? Good

[23:08] psychologists? Good psychiatrists? No,

[23:11] you would never do that. That's what

[23:12] you're doing with the world.

[23:14] That's exactly what you're doing.

[23:16] You are looking out there and seeing

[23:17] what you're projecting onto it and then

[23:19] you're going out there and trying to

[23:20] make it look like the way you want it to

[23:22] look when you project it. That was a

[23:24] long sentence.

[23:26] That's what everybody's doing.

[23:27] And there's only one world out there, so

[23:29] they're all fighting how to make it look

[23:31] so it to make them feel good when they

[23:32] project onto it. Wouldn't it be nice if

[23:34] everybody had fancy cars? Wouldn't it be

[23:36] nice if people shared the world and

[23:37] didn't bother buying fancy cars? Okay.

[23:40] Uh-oh. What do we do with the cars?

[23:44] Stop thinking you're right. It's beyond

[23:46] right.

[23:47] It's this thing called clarity.

[23:50] So, basically, in order to see

[23:54] you have to be willing to let go of

[23:55] yourself. But nobody else, I don't care.

[23:58] You're going to sit around and wait for

[23:59] everybody else, you're going to be here

[24:00] a long time. But they'll take advantage

[24:03] of me. How can the quantum field take

[24:05] advantage of you?

[24:07] How can atoms take advantage of you? How

[24:09] can ink blots take advantage of you?

[24:12] When I'm not looking they'll change the

[24:13] ink blot.

[24:14] Okay. You see what I'm saying? Any way

[24:17] you think about it is just the way

[24:19] you're thinking about it. It's illusion,

[24:21] it's delusion. There's nobody that can

[24:23] happen, there's nothing happening. The

[24:24] only thing that's hap- I told you, this

[24:26] is how you get from this talk. What is

[24:27] happening?

[24:28] You are projecting this world you built

[24:31] inside your head out of what you thought

[24:33] you saw out onto that world and then

[24:37] deciding it has to be a certain way for

[24:39] you to be okay. There.

[24:41] Can they take advantage of you? Sure.

[24:42] Just have it not be the way you want it

[24:44] to be.

[24:45] Just have somebody leave, have somebody

[24:46] show up, fall in love with somebody else

[24:48] when you shouldn't. Just Oh my god,

[24:49] there's so many things that can happen

[24:51] that don't match your ink blot concept,

[24:53] that when you project it out there isn't

[24:54] what you projected. Go watch the

[24:56] politics, watch all of them talk. All

[24:59] they're doing is pushing themselves.

[25:01] It's amazing. Just pushing their views,

[25:03] their opinions, to what it is that they

[25:06] need to see in order for them to be

[25:08] okay. And they get very upset when they

[25:10] don't see that. So, you wake up and you

[25:12] realize that's not a game I'm going to

[25:14] play. What game? The game of projecting

[25:18] my mind out into the world, which is

[25:21] what you're doing, and then seeing

[25:23] things that I like and seeing things

[25:25] that I don't. Like you did that. There's

[25:26] no like or dislike out there. There's

[25:28] just atoms. But you projected it out

[25:31] there. Now I'm going to go out there and

[25:33] use my will to manipulate so that it

[25:36] looks the way my illusion wants it to

[25:38] look. Just remember that. Remember that

[25:40] once in your life, that is what you are

[25:42] doing. Do you understand that? That is

[25:44] what everybody else is doing. That's

[25:46] what's happening. You want to grow

[25:48] spiritually? You got to come back to

[25:50] self. Not play around with the illusion

[25:53] of the mind and the concepts, and not

[25:55] play around with what it's projecting

[25:57] out onto the ink blot of the world, and

[25:59] not even playing around with the ink

[26:01] blot of the world because it's not even

[26:02] there anyways. How do you do that?

[26:04] You're not going to do it by changing

[26:06] the world. Because

[26:09] how would you decide how to change the

[26:10] world based on how you projected out

[26:12] onto it? Who you like, who you don't

[26:14] like, how they should be, how they

[26:15] shouldn't be, how they should dress, how

[26:16] they should talk. Just everything,

[26:18] everything. You don't do that. Well,

[26:21] then what? Now I'm stuck with myself.

[26:23] Now I'm stuck with a mind that doesn't

[26:25] like what's happening. Well, maybe you

[26:27] better work with that. Maybe you better

[26:29] cool it. Maybe you better stop

[26:31] projecting your mind out into the world.

[26:33] How? Relax. Relax, then. Don't hang out

[26:36] with it. Just realize it doesn't know

[26:37] what it's talking about. I'm going to

[26:39] tell you your mind never knows what it's

[26:40] talking about. Why? Because you made a

[26:42] false mind. That's like It's like you're

[26:43] never right. Listen to me. No one has

[26:47] ever been right about that ink blot. No

[26:50] one ever got it right. There's no

[26:52] grading, all right? No one ever got it

[26:55] right as to what that ink blot really

[26:57] looks like, right? That's the truth with

[27:00] your mind.

[27:01] It's wrong. It's wrong to have built all

[27:03] these concepts and views and opinions

[27:05] and preferences based on what you

[27:06] thought you saw, which was based on what

[27:08] you projected. I can't even talk about

[27:10] it. It's too hard. All right? It's

[27:11] really sophisticated and it's pretty

[27:12] complex stuff. You project something out

[27:14] there, therefore you like it or don't

[27:16] like it, therefore you build a concept

[27:17] inside about like and dislike.

[27:19] >> [sighs]

[27:20] >> Pretty intense, okay? So, you've got

[27:23] this mind. What do you do? Well, people

[27:25] teach all kinds of things. That's why

[27:27] there are gurus. They teach all kinds of

[27:30] things. Want to know the highest one is?

[27:32] Yuktishwar.

[27:34] Very simple sentence.

[27:36] An ignored guest quickly leaves.

[27:40] There is no faster way to transcend your

[27:43] mind than to not listen to it.

[27:46] Just as you wanted to get the world a

[27:48] certain way,

[27:49] those atoms out there, well, you're

[27:51] interested, I don't know.

[27:53] Because you projected yourself onto the

[27:55] ink blot, then you wanted to change the

[27:57] ink blot so you felt good. Just as you

[27:59] wanted to do that, you want to get your

[28:00] mind to say nice things the way you want

[28:03] it to be, so you feel comfortable with

[28:04] it and so on and so forth. You're just

[28:06] perpetrating the same game.

[28:09] The same game.

[28:11] You're not seeing things clearly. You

[28:13] made up this First, you make up a mind,

[28:15] then you decide how it needs to be for

[28:17] you to be okay with it. Let me repeat

[28:19] that. You make up a mind. Your mind can

[28:21] do anything. You know what I'm saying?

[28:23] There's nothing in there. You're the

[28:23] only one in there.

[28:25] You make up a mind, then you decide how

[28:27] it needs to be for you to be okay with

[28:29] it. And then either you go outside to

[28:32] try and make people, places, and things

[28:33] be the way so the mind's okay. Or or

[28:35] you're very evolved, you come inside and

[28:37] you screw with your own mind and

[28:39] rearrange the furniture and do all kinds

[28:41] of things. What's wrong with that?

[28:42] You're the one who built this thing to

[28:45] start with, and now you're in there

[28:46] saying how it needs to be and you're

[28:48] complaining that it's not that way.

[28:50] That's just absolutely hilarious.

[28:53] There's a mirror. It's perfect. You

[28:55] stand in front of it. You don't like

[28:56] what you look like. But it has

[28:57] adjustments. It's a really amazing

[28:59] mirror. You know, it's one of these

[29:00] digital mirrors. You adjust You adjust

[29:02] You adjust it You do it the right

[29:03] weight, right this, right that, or so

[29:04] on. You step in front of it the next

[29:06] day. Ew, I don't like what it looks

[29:08] like. Oh, who did that? You did.

[29:11] You did it. You made your mind. How dare

[29:14] you complain about your mind? The mind

[29:16] did not make itself. You made it. You

[29:19] made it out of what? You projected

[29:22] yourself out onto the atoms that are not

[29:24] there, decided to freak out over them

[29:26] because You know what? You're not

[29:27] freaking out over them. You're freaking

[29:28] out over what you projected onto them,

[29:30] the ink blot. And then that reaction was

[29:33] so uncomfortable that you built concepts

[29:35] inside your mind that I don't like that

[29:36] and I don't want to look like that. You

[29:37] built this whole preference system. And

[29:39] now you're freaking out over it cuz it

[29:41] won't let you go to sleep and it won't

[29:42] let you be happy and you don't like your

[29:43] husband anymore. And it's You don't know

[29:45] what to do. And you're complaining about

[29:47] your mind. You go to group, "My mind's

[29:49] bothering me so much." That's hilarious.

[29:52] You're doing all of it.

[29:55] An ignored guest quickly leaves. What

[29:57] does that mean? Are you willing to just

[30:00] let it go?

[30:02] It's going to talk for a while

[30:04] till you get out.

[30:06] So what?

[30:08] That's the highest state with your mind.

[30:10] And I'll feel good. And I'll try to I

[30:12] don't like this.

[30:16] People talking at me. I don't hear a

[30:19] word they're saying, only the echoes of

[30:23] my mind.

[30:24] So basically, you just don't listen to

[30:27] it.

[30:28] Now, you may need help learning how to

[30:30] not listen to it.

[30:32] But it's not about listening to it.

[30:34] It's not about picking which part you

[30:35] want to be.

[30:37] It's not literally That's what witness

[30:38] conscious is. Learning to realize

[30:42] I shouldn't be listening to this thing.

[30:44] It's just all part of this mess that

[30:46] we've been talking about. I I spent a

[30:47] lot of time building it for you. It's

[30:49] unbelievable that you're going to listen

[30:51] to that mess.

[30:53] Can you relax in the face of it?

[30:56] I don't care if it's happy. I don't care

[30:57] if it's sad. I don't care if it likes

[30:59] what's happening. I don't care if it

[31:00] doesn't like what's happening. I don't

[31:02] care if it's in a good mood. I don't

[31:03] care if it's in a bad mood. I don't

[31:04] care. I don't care. I don't care.

[31:07] That's how you have to be. I don't care.

[31:09] I understand. I made a flaming mess out

[31:12] of you.

[31:13] And as long as I'm in there and letting

[31:15] you tell me what to do about it, and

[31:17] letting you express yourself through my

[31:18] being, I ain't getting out.

[31:20] The only way to get out is to be able to

[31:23] I'm in here, you're over there.

[31:26] I kind of hear you like the crickets,

[31:28] but that's about as much attention as

[31:30] I'm paying to you.

[31:31] There is no way in the world I am

[31:34] letting that mess that I made because of

[31:37] what I projected on the world and then

[31:38] they didn't like what I I I want to do

[31:40] it anymore.

[31:41] >> [laughter]

[31:42] >> It's too complex. All right, I ain't

[31:44] doing it. I'm just not doing it.

[31:46] If I have but one life to live, I ain't

[31:47] living it that way.

[31:49] And so you learn over time, gradually.

[31:53] It's not going to happen all at once.

[31:55] To let go. That's what letting go here.

[31:57] Now at the state you understand what

[31:59] letting go means.

[32:00] The mind has something to say. I don't

[32:03] care.

[32:04] You mean I have to stop it from saying

[32:06] it? No, I do not have to stop it from

[32:08] saying it. I couldn't care less whether

[32:10] it says it or not. I couldn't care less

[32:12] whether it's happy or sad. I couldn't

[32:14] care less whether it's attracted or

[32:15] repulsed. I couldn't care less whether

[32:17] it likes something or doesn't like

[32:18] something. I couldn't care less whether

[32:20] it slept or didn't sleep. I couldn't

[32:21] care less whether it feels good or feels

[32:23] bad. I don't care.

[32:25] I don't care. I'm mean to it. I don't

[32:28] care. All right, I literally That's

[32:29] that's caring. Okay, I literally I don't

[32:31] care. I've seen enough of this.

[32:33] I've seen enough of what the mind has to

[32:35] say and how it projects itself outside

[32:38] and then likes people and doesn't like

[32:39] people and has good days and bad days.

[32:41] There are no good days. There are no bad

[32:42] days. There are no happy days. There are

[32:43] no sad days.

[32:45] There's the mind doing its mind thing

[32:47] that you made it do and you taught it

[32:50] how to do. You built that thing.

[32:52] And then there's you inside who has

[32:54] decided, "I want out."

[32:57] I want out.

[32:59] You go want to go use your life to try

[33:01] and make the ink blot of the world look

[33:03] the way you want it to look when you

[33:04] project onto it. You have fun. You go

[33:07] out there.

[33:09] I'm not a teacher, not anything. You

[33:11] just go about your business. You have a

[33:13] good old time, but I ain't going out

[33:14] there with you.

[33:15] Say that right now. All right, fine. So,

[33:18] you're just trying to divorce yourself

[33:19] from the world, but what about your

[33:21] mind? I don't care. I don't care. What

[33:24] about your feelings? I don't care.

[33:26] I don't care.

[33:28] They're just the result. The feelings

[33:29] are the same. They're just that Explain

[33:31] that in the new book. The feelings are

[33:32] just the shock they're hitting all the

[33:34] mind stuff and stuff that you built in

[33:36] there causing all these vibrations to go

[33:38] all over the place and you can't handle

[33:40] them. Well, you better handle them.

[33:42] You better just sit there and say,

[33:43] "Fine. Fine." That's the way the heart

[33:47] is. That's the way the mind is. That's

[33:49] just the human state that I built

[33:52] because I couldn't handle things and

[33:53] projected and I already told you. I just

[33:55] made this a mess.

[33:57] I am going to sit in here and relax

[34:01] through everything and anything.

[34:04] Whatever the mind wants to throw up,

[34:06] that's what it does. It throws up.

[34:07] Whatever the mind wants to throw up, I

[34:09] don't care. Spiritual, non-spiritual, I

[34:11] don't want a self-concept. I don't want

[34:13] anybody to think of me anyway.

[34:15] I have no future. I'm not waiting for

[34:17] something to happen

[34:18] so that I can express myself.

[34:21] I don't care. It's not real. If it's not

[34:24] real, why would I care?

[34:26] You understand that? This is what the

[34:27] masters have taught you. Illusion,

[34:29] delusion, and error. Maya.

[34:31] Why would I get involved in what my mind

[34:34] did about what's not there? What I

[34:36] projected onto what's not there. It's

[34:38] crazy. So, you learn to relax in the

[34:41] face of whatever your mind does,

[34:43] whatever your emotions do, whatever the

[34:45] perception of the inkblot is for the

[34:47] moment, you just relax. You fall back.

[34:51] You relax first and then you fall away

[34:53] from it. You fall away from it. Not the

[34:55] world,

[34:57] not your mind, not the emotions, all of

[34:59] it. You just fall away gradually and

[35:02] eventually, if you will keep falling

[35:04] away, it will stop pulling you into it.

[35:07] You will lose interest in it. What did

[35:09] Ramakrishna say? The world has lost its

[35:12] salt. That's not a bad thing. That means

[35:15] you understand it had no flavor to start

[35:17] with. I projected the flavor onto it.

[35:20] So, if I can relax and lean away from

[35:24] whatever the mind is saying, you

[35:26] remember you built your mind. Don't you

[35:28] ever doubt that. God did not give you a

[35:31] pre-built mind. You were given clear

[35:33] mind. You were given God's mind.

[35:35] And you did this.

[35:38] So, own it. You built it, you can let

[35:40] go. And so, you relax behind whatever

[35:43] the mind says, you relax behind whatever

[35:45] the heart does. You just keep relaxing

[35:48] until you're comfortable. You'll never

[35:49] get totally comfortable, but reasonably

[35:52] comfortable with what can get created,

[35:55] for and against. Yin and yang, as it

[35:57] gets created. I want it, I don't want

[35:59] it. They make a lot of noise. You be

[36:01] comfortable behind. If you're

[36:03] comfortable behind, they will cease to

[36:05] distract your consciousness as much. You

[36:08] won't get pulled into it. If you're not

[36:10] pulled into it, you get to remain in

[36:12] your seat of consciousness. And there

[36:14] will come a time, eventually, if you

[36:16] work on this, that you have relaxed so

[36:18] deeply and they have so little pull on

[36:21] you that you fall back. You fall in.

[36:25] You fall away. How about that? I don't

[36:27] call it back or in. You fall away from

[36:30] where you've been hanging out.

[36:32] What is there in the room other than the

[36:34] TV you're lost in?

[36:36] A lot.

[36:38] But it's outside

[36:40] of where you were lost.

[36:43] In my father's house there are many

[36:44] mansions.

[36:46] So, there's a whole universe behind

[36:49] where you're caught.

[36:50] And you just decide

[36:53] that's where I'm going. And so, you keep

[36:55] always working on letting go. There's

[36:58] never a time that that's not what you're

[37:00] doing. No matter how you feel, no matter

[37:03] what's happening, no matter what befalls

[37:05] you.

[37:05] That's what Christ's teaching was, his

[37:07] life.

[37:09] No matter what happened, he let go.

[37:12] That's the world. This world is not

[37:13] real, he taught that. And so, basically,

[37:16] I started with the physics. Then I went

[37:18] to the psychology.

[37:20] And then you're at spirituality. It's

[37:21] just that simple.

[37:22] But your mind, instead of thinking about

[37:25] these ink blots and what you want, it's

[37:27] allowed to think about the physics. It's

[37:29] allowed to think about the reality of

[37:32] what's going on. That's what Vivekananda

[37:34] taught, the Vedantic teachings, all

[37:36] right? Is you're allowed to use your

[37:38] mind for Gyana Yoga, to think of these

[37:41] high-level things. That won't bind you.

[37:43] That will help liberate you. But when

[37:45] you build this whole self-concept in

[37:47] your mind, it binds you. Who's willing

[37:49] to get out? Who's decided, I don't want

[37:52] to live my life the way these stupid

[37:53] people do? It looks crazy. Just read the

[37:56] paper every day. Turn on the news.

[37:59] So, that's yoga. That's spirituality.

[38:01] Are you willing to live at that level?

[38:05] Are you willing to continue to look at

[38:07] the world, which is an ink blot, and

[38:10] project onto it what you like and what

[38:12] you don't like and what you want and

[38:13] what you don't want,

[38:15] and then suffer?

[38:16] Go through all your little moods and

[38:18] things because you're tied into But

[38:20] real.

[38:21] You want to talk deep teachings? These

[38:24] are the deep teachings, and this is

[38:25] yoga.

[38:26] This is what the great ones taught. Do

[38:28] you understand that? Complete

[38:30] transcendence.

[38:31] Non-duality. All the Buddhist teachings,

[38:34] all the really deep teachings, are

[38:35] founded on what we just talked about.

[38:38] Are you willing to devote your life,

[38:41] every second of it, no games,

[38:44] to let go of the illusion that you have

[38:47] created when you look out there at that

[38:49] ink blot? Uh when you walk away from

[38:51] this talk,

[38:53] there's just an ink blot out there. I

[38:54] already showed you it's not real.

[38:55] Electron, neutron, proton, everything,

[38:57] right? You are projecting yourself onto

[39:00] it.

[39:01] I wouldn't devote my life to that.

[39:03] I wouldn't give it 1 second, not an eye

[39:06] blink.

[39:07] All right? You keep letting go, and let

[39:10] go of the model you built, and get

[39:12] comfortable in there behind all of this.

[39:15] Then it will all happen. That's where

[39:17] the Shakti exists. That's where it pulls

[39:19] you up. That's where you feel this

[39:20] tremendous power in the seat of self.

[39:23] You don't want the mind to be your

[39:25] power, and you don't want the world to

[39:26] be your power.

[39:28] Free yourself.

[39:29] Liberate yourself.

[39:31] Like Krishna said to Arjuna, "Be thou a

[39:33] yogi."

[39:35] Mhm. Jai Gurudev.

In this teaching, the mind layers its preferences, fears, and self-concept over raw perception, so what you experience as the world is partly a finished interpretation. The teacher uses the image of an ink blot, where each viewer reads a different shape, to show how this works. Recognizing the projection is the first step toward seeing more clearly.
The teacher does not claim the physical world doesn't exist. He argues that the particular world the mind presents is not the one that is there, and that each level of description, from water to molecules to a quantum field, depends on the lens used to look. No single level wins as the final truth.
The teacher warns that the ego is very strong and that you cannot talk your way out of it or simply declare yourself above it. Intellectual argument keeps the mind in charge of the question, which is why he cites the instruction not to argue for or against the existence of things. Clarity of seeing, not debate, is presented as the path.
The video description frames the voice in your head as the part that narrates, judges, and interprets, while the witness is the awareness that observes that voice. Spiritual growth begins when you recognize you are the one who hears the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. Over time, relaxing and letting the mind pass through loosens its hold.
The teacher uses Maya to describe the condition of living inside a projected world and taking that projection as the whole of reality. He says that if you are in it, you are of it. Seeing through Maya requires very clear eyes and clear consciousness.
Pick an ordinary object or person and notice what you are adding to it, such as a preference, a fear, or a story about its meaning. Then ask who is noticing the addition. The teaching frames this as a gradual loosening rather than a sudden break.
According to the video description, Michael A. Singer is the author of The Untethered Soul and other New York Times bestsellers. He had an inner awakening in 1971 while working on a doctorate in economics, then went into seclusion to focus on yoga and meditation, and he founded Temple of the Universe in 1975.
