Sitting for Spirit is a thirty-minute guided meditation led by evidential medium, mediumship teacher and certified grief educator Becky Hesseltine, and it rests on a single idea: the bond of love between the living and those who have died, along with one's guides and angels, is not something to be summoned or forced but something to be remembered and rested in. Rather than asking for a message or chasing a sign, the practice moves through a deliberate sequence. Listeners name the spirit loved ones they carry, release the grip of the thinking mind, let the breath settle the nervous system, and then let awareness come to rest in what Hesseltine calls the spirit side of life. It is a quiet piece of work, and its power lies in how patiently it is built.

Lecture · 9 sections

Why does a meditation begin with a list of the dead?

Most guided meditations open by asking you to get comfortable and close your eyes. This one asks you to do homework first. Hesseltine opens by introducing herself and the practice, then pauses for a moment of preparation (around 2:54 in the recording): "if you do want to journal or just write it all out, but all the loved ones you have in spirit, sometimes we have 10, 20 loved ones, plus uh friends, family members, community members, neighbors." The instruction is to become aware of all of them, whether you write names on paper or simply hold a note within.

The choice is instructive. A meditation on connection that begins with an inventory is treating connection as something concrete, a relationship with particular people who are still in your life in a different form. Hesseltine extends the roll call beyond family to "your creative muse, your guides, your angels," giving yourself permission to become aware of them as well. The list is not a test of memory. It is a way of widening what you are willing to feel when you close your eyes.

What makes Sitting for Spirit different from earlier practices?

Hesseltine is explicit that this is one of a series. Earlier meditations, she says, were built around "sitting in the power," understanding the power of the soul and of spirit and allowing yourself to get familiar with the spirit worlds and to let spiritual helpers connect with you (around 0:53 in the recording). Sitting for Spirit is "very similar, but this one is more of allowing for ourselves to acknowledge the spirit loved ones," and then to move awareness toward them and "allow for them to share an experience with us."

That shift from power to relationship is the spine of the practice. The emphasis is less on the self as a channel and more on the self as one partner in a continuing exchange. Hesseltine frames this as a return: "I believe that it's one of the most natural things we do is to connect through the bond of love." The practice, in her telling, is not learning a new skill so much as "coming back to our naturalness."

Does the time of year matter to spirit connection?

Hesseltine acknowledges the seasonal framing many traditions bring to this kind of work. She notes that "given this time of year, we feel called to connect to spirit," and that "some people say, yes, the veil is thinner at this period of time." Her own position is measured. She says, "I believe it's always that connection is always available. But this time of year, we can develop it even deeper." The seasonal moment, in other words, becomes an occasion to deepen a practice that is meant to carry forward into the rest of the year, when, as she puts it, "we can use that connection the most."

This is worth noticing for anyone who comes to the meditation hoping for a dramatic result. Hesseltine's framing keeps the ordinary relationship primary. The seasonal language gives it a timing, not a guarantee.

How do posture and the body prepare for spirit contact?

The practice is careful about the body. Hesseltine warns that if you lie down, "falling asleep may happen," and suggests you may prefer to sit up, though she also allows that "it would be really restorative to lay down." The instruction is to be guided by "whatever posture is right for you in this moment." This is a small detail with real craft behind it. Sitting upright keeps the attention alert enough to notice subtle impressions; lying down invites the release that can be healing. The meditation does not decide for you.

Once eyes are closed, the practice turns to the body in a way that many spiritual recordings skip. Hesseltine asks listeners to "acknowledge with compassion and empathy and love all that your body's been through," and then invites the body to "unravel the past" and "settle into calmness naturally." Around 9:48 in the recording she says that as you gift the body this experience, "notice the subtle shifts and changes your body wants to make. Allow for it." The instruction is not to make anything happen. It is to let the body's own intelligence do its work.

What does the breath do in this meditation?

The breath is the practice's main instrument, and Hesseltine gives it a precise job. She directs listeners to "breathe in those spaces" where tension is held, and then says plainly: "Giving your breath a job. Regulating the nervous system. Bringing it back to calmness, relaxation, peace." Whatever your view of the spiritual claims, this is a concrete piece of technique. Slow, full breathing with a deliberate lengthened exhale is a familiar way to settle the body, and Hesseltine uses it as the bridge between a stressed physical state and a receptive one.

The breath then turns toward the mind. Around 12:38 she says: "Allowing the breath to calm the mind. Allowing the mind to take this much-needed break, this much-needed vacation." The language is generous to the thinking brain. "The mind does so much for you and keeping you safe, figuring out this physical life, navigating choices and decisions." The practice does not ask you to fight the mind. It asks you to let it rest. "There's nothing to figure out. Nothing to plan for. Nothing to make sense of."

How do you handle thoughts that pull you away?

Hesseltine is realistic about distraction. She tells listeners to expect that "those thoughts might sprinkle in here and there," and to treat them the way a good meditation teacher would: acknowledge them, then come back. The same logic applies to expectation. She asks listeners to let go of "any expectation," to allow past experiences to remain in the past, and to let go of questions so that "an experience" can be shared with them. The discipline is not the absence of thought but a repeated, gentle return.

This matters most for people approaching a meditation about a deceased loved one. Hunger for a specific sign can become its own kind of noise. Hesseltine's instruction is to release that hunger and simply be present.

What is the "loving intelligence" at the center of the practice?

The most distinctive passage comes near the end of the sitting, when Hesseltine moves from the body and mind to something she describes as a loving intelligence. The phrase is hers, and she builds it carefully. Listeners are invited to notice "that loving intelligence beating your heart," which was present "before your heart started beating," present "throughout every heartbeat," and present "after your heart will stop beating." She asks, "Can you be with that loving intelligence? You can also call it your spirit. It's everlasting. The aliveness of love."

Here the meditation makes its central claim. The awareness you have been cultivating is not a temporary state produced by breathing. It is, in her framing, the same thread that runs through birth and death. That is why she can describe the spirit side of life as "the celebration of everlasting life, everlasting love," and why she can say, in one of the practice's most striking invitations, "This sense of home. This place feels so familiar, so peaceful, so natural."

"How greatly can you allow this love to love you?"

Becky Hesseltine, Sitting for Spirit guided meditation (around 19:55 in the recording)

That question is the practice in miniature. It asks not whether the spirit world will reach you, but how much of what is already present you are willing to receive. The subsequent passages build on it, moving toward "more and more available" and "surrender even deeper," the language of openness rather than effort.

How should you use a recording like this?

Hesseltine closes by inviting listeners to return to the meditation "whenever you feel called to reconnect, nurture your relationship with Spirit, or simply rest in love." That suggestion is the most practical takeaway. Sitting for Spirit is designed as a repeatable container rather than a one-time event. The list of loved ones can change. The posture can change. The breath is always available. Over repeated sittings, the practice is meant to make the sense of connection more familiar, which is exactly the word she keeps returning to: familiar, natural, at home.

The closing words are simple: "You're home always." For a meditation rooted in loss and longing, that line carries the whole design. Connection, in this framing, is not something you build or earn. It is something you come back to.

Where to go from here

If this practice speaks to you, the most useful next step is simply to sit with it. Set aside the full thirty minutes, choose your posture, and perhaps write down the loved ones and guides you want to acknowledge beforehand. Notice where the body holds tension and let the breath work on it. When thoughts arrive, which Hesseltine says they will, return to the sense of love without judging yourself for drifting.

Those who want to go deeper can explore the teacher's own work. Hesseltine describes herself as an evidential medium, a mediumship development teacher and a certified grief educator, and her published materials point to private readings, workshops and classes, and mentorship for people wishing to develop their intuitive gifts. The recording itself, she notes, is one of a series that includes earlier meditations on sitting in the power. Starting there, or returning to this one as the seasons change, is a practical way to keep the connection she describes from remaining an idea and turning it into a daily, familiar presence.

[0:01] I'm Becky Hasseltine, evidential medium.

[0:04] You can find me at beckyhasseltine.com.

[0:09] And the meditation you're about to

[0:10] experience is the sitting for spirit

[0:14] practice.

[0:16] And I'm so excited to share it with you.

[0:19] Feel free to reach out,

[0:22] beckyhasseltine.com,

[0:23] and share your comments and questions.

[0:27] I'm here to support you on your journey

[0:30] to spirit through readings, courses,

[0:33] classes, workshops, and mentorship.

[0:38] This meditation

[0:41] I call sitting for spirit.

[0:44] Other meditations that we've done in the

[0:47] past are around

[0:49] sitting in the power, which where

[0:52] that's

[0:53] when we're understanding the power of

[0:55] our soul, the power of spirit, and

[0:58] allowing for ourselves to have an

[1:00] experience with both.

[1:03] And also allowing for

[1:08] ourselves to get familiar with the

[1:11] spirit worlds, allowing for our

[1:13] spiritual helpers to

[1:16] connect with us, our loved ones in the

[1:19] spirit world to connect with us, and to

[1:21] allow

[1:23] that experience to unfold organically.

[1:27] And this practice, sitting for spirit

[1:32] this one is very similar, but this one

[1:36] is more of allowing for ourselves to

[1:41] acknowledge the spirit loved ones, our

[1:45] spirit team, our guides, our angels,

[1:47] departed loved ones

[1:50] and to allow for ourselves to

[1:53] move our awareness

[1:55] to

[1:57] them,

[1:59] to

[2:01] spirit in general, and to allow for

[2:04] ourselves

[2:05] to rest our awareness there,

[2:08] and allow for them to share an

[2:11] experience with us.

[2:14] And

[2:16] I believe that it's one of the most

[2:19] natural things we do is to connect

[2:22] through the bond of love.

[2:24] And it's just coming back to our

[2:26] naturalness, coming back to

[2:29] our natural state of everlasting love

[2:34] and connection, and to

[2:37] give yourself this moment this morning

[2:41] to

[2:42] allow for yourself to realign with that

[2:45] naturalness,

[2:47] and to allow for our awareness to rest

[2:50] with the spirit world.

[2:54] And it might help to just take a moment

[2:58] to

[3:00] you know, before we move into our

[3:02] meditation, if you do want to journal or

[3:04] just write it all out, but

[3:08] all the loved ones you have in spirit,

[3:10] sometimes we have 10, 20 loved ones,

[3:15] plus

[3:16] uh friends,

[3:19] family members,

[3:21] community members, neighbors,

[3:24] and just allow for yourself

[3:28] to become aware of all of them.

[3:31] And maybe you want to write them all

[3:34] down,

[3:35] maybe just writing a note within,

[3:38] and just allowing for yourself to

[3:40] acknowledge

[3:42] these departed

[3:45] loved ones.

[3:49] And then maybe

[3:50] you've also have had experiences with

[3:54] your spirit team.

[3:57] Your creative muse,

[4:00] your guides, your angels.

[4:04] And giving yourself permission to also

[4:07] become aware

[4:09] of them as well.

[4:12] It's just allowing for your awareness to

[4:17] sense,

[4:19] to acknowledge

[4:22] that connection as well.

[4:29] And

[4:30] given this time of year,

[4:34] we feel called to connect to spirit.

[4:39] And

[4:40] some people say, yes, the veil is

[4:43] thinner at this period of time.

[4:47] And

[4:49] sensing into that,

[4:52] there is that potential and possibility

[4:55] for that thinner veil.

[4:57] I believe it's always

[5:00] that connection is always available.

[5:03] But this time of year, we can develop it

[5:06] even deeper. So we can bring that

[5:09] practice, bring it forward in other

[5:13] moments of the year where we can use

[5:15] that connection the most.

[5:19] So,

[5:23] giving yourself this moment to

[5:27] settle into your meditation posture.

[5:32] And sitting for spirit,

[5:36] maybe this is a meditation where

[5:41] you know that falling asleep

[5:44] may happen if you're laying down.

[5:47] So maybe you allow for yourself to

[5:51] sit up for this one.

[5:54] Or maybe

[5:56] it would be really restorative to lay

[5:59] down.

[6:00] Allow for yourself to be guided

[6:04] with whatever posture is right for you

[6:05] in this moment.

[6:09] And as you land,

[6:13] go ahead and

[6:15] close your eyes.

[6:18] And then

[6:19] just as what you did with your eyes

[6:22] open,

[6:24] acknowledging all these loved ones,

[6:28] your spiritual helpers, departed loved

[6:31] ones,

[6:33] acknowledge them with your heart

[6:37] how grateful you are

[6:42] to experience

[6:44] their life

[6:48] and to also experience

[6:51] this continued life

[6:54] between worlds.

[6:55] You here in the physical world,

[6:58] them in the spirit side of life.

[7:01] All this connection continues,

[7:06] deepens, unfolds, evolves, heals.

[7:14] And then allowing for yourself to

[7:19] acknowledge the thinking brain,

[7:22] knowing all the thoughts that might

[7:25] take you away from the experience

[7:29] of spirit.

[7:33] And just know that

[7:36] those thoughts might

[7:38] sprinkle in here and there.

[7:42] We can acknowledge those thoughts,

[7:44] those distractions,

[7:47] and come back

[7:50] to the experience of love,

[7:54] experience of spirit.

[7:58] And then also giving yourself permission

[8:01] to let go

[8:04] of any expectation.

[8:09] And maybe you've had experiences in the

[8:12] past.

[8:15] And you just allow for those experiences

[8:19] to be in the past.

[8:24] Allow for what's happening right now

[8:28] to be with you.

[8:35] Letting go of expectation,

[8:38] letting go of questions.

[8:42] Just allowing for an experience

[8:45] to be shared with you.

[8:55] And then now

[8:58] with your eyes closed,

[9:02] giving yourself permission to come back

[9:05] to that natural state of peace,

[9:09] that natural state of loving surrender.

[9:14] And giving your body

[9:17] the sense

[9:19] of peace,

[9:23] the sense of harmony,

[9:26] the sense of alignment

[9:31] with its highest and greatest good.

[9:35] And as you gift it

[9:38] that experience, notice

[9:41] the subtle shifts and changes your body

[9:43] wants to make.

[9:46] Allow for it.

[9:48] Unraveling tension, unraveling stress of

[9:51] the past.

[9:54] And can you acknowledge

[9:57] with compassion and empathy and love

[10:02] all that your body's been through?

[10:06] And right now, it can be at peace.

[10:11] And knows how to unravel the past.

[10:15] And knows how to settle into calmness

[10:18] naturally.

[10:21] Nothing to hold on to here.

[10:27] Just allowing the body

[10:32] to be bathed with peace, love, healing,

[10:37] vitality,

[10:39] calmness,

[10:41] relaxation.

[10:45] And allowing your breath to support you

[10:48] in this. Breathing in fully.

[10:53] And breathing out allowing

[10:57] more peace, more relaxation to be

[11:00] experienced by the body.

[11:11] Maybe there's some areas of the body

[11:13] that's holding tension. Allow your

[11:15] breath to breathe in those spaces.

[11:21] Full permission to relax.

[11:29] Breathing in and breathing out.

[11:33] Giving your breath a job.

[11:37] Regulating the nervous system.

[11:42] Bringing it back to

[11:45] calmness, relaxation, peace.

[11:53] Guiding the breath.

[11:57] Now allowing for

[12:00] your breaths

[12:02] to calm the mind.

[12:08] Allowing the mind to

[12:11] take this much-needed break, this

[12:14] much-needed

[12:15] vacation.

[12:21] The mind does so much for you and

[12:24] keeping you safe, figuring out this

[12:26] physical life,

[12:29] navigating choices and decisions.

[12:33] Now it can just relax.

[12:38] Allowing the breath to calm the mind.

[12:42] Allowing the brain to become

[12:46] relaxed and open

[12:49] to peace and calmness.

[12:53] There's nothing to figure out.

[12:56] Nothing to plan for.

[13:01] Nothing to make sense of.

[13:04] Just

[13:06] allowing the mind

[13:09] to take this much-needed vacation.

[13:13] This much-needed

[13:16] pause for relaxation.

[13:23] And notice the mind having this exhale.

[13:32] Allowing the breath to exhale.

[13:37] Your body, your mind at peace,

[13:42] harmony.

[13:49] Coming back to its loving

[13:52] intelligent nature.

[13:58] The divine intelligence in the body,

[14:01] that divine intelligence in the mind,

[14:05] allow it to rest there.

[14:13] Noticing

[14:19] Noticing that loving intelligence

[14:23] beating your heart.

[14:27] That loving intelligence that has been

[14:29] with you

[14:32] before your heart started beating.

[14:37] Loving intelligence throughout every

[14:40] heartbeat.

[14:42] That loving intelligence

[14:45] after your heart will stop beating.

[14:51] Can you be with that loving

[14:52] intelligence?

[14:56] You can also call it

[14:59] your spirit.

[15:02] It's everlasting.

[15:07] The aliveness of love.

[15:19] And allowing for yourself,

[15:22] your spirit

[15:27] to share its experience with you.

[15:33] As it's

[15:35] presence is in the spirit side of life.

[15:47] The space of the spirit world,

[15:51] the space

[15:58] of your guides, your angels, departed

[16:01] loved ones

[16:08] welcoming you here.

[16:13] The celebration of everlasting life,

[16:16] everlasting love.

[16:25] This sense of home.

[16:37] This place feels so familiar,

[16:42] so peaceful,

[16:45] so natural.

[16:49] Allowing

[16:51] the love of the spirit to love you

[16:54] greatly,

[16:57] to share their experience with you.

[17:08] Allowing your awareness to rest

[17:12] in the spirit side of life.

[17:28] >> And giving yourself permission to

[17:31] experience

[17:33] this deeper and deeper.

[17:41] Allowing for all the facets of your

[17:43] awareness

[17:46] to expand, to melt.

[17:52] To surrender, to dissolve

[17:56] in the loving

[18:01] spirit side of life.

[18:23] How greatly can you allow this love to

[18:26] love you?

[18:31] Sharing your love so naturally.

[19:04] Taking the sacred pause

[19:11] right here.

[19:39] Allowing spirits love to share its

[19:42] experience with you.

[20:11] Allowing for spirits love and healing

[20:15] messages.

[20:18] Greater awareness.

[20:23] To enchant.

[20:25] Your experience.

[20:56] How greatly can you become more and more

[20:59] available?

[21:04] Surrender even deeper.

[22:19] Giving yourself full permission.

[22:24] To experience

[22:26] spirit in a greater way.

[22:31] Even deeper.

[22:38] More and more available.

[23:53] >> And take a moment to sense into you

[23:57] profound gratitude

[24:02] for this experience,

[24:04] for this connection.

[24:12] And notice

[24:14] how natural it is

[24:18] to connect,

[24:20] to be here.

[24:28] Gratitude for your availability

[24:34] to be loved greatly,

[24:39] to love greatly,

[24:47] to connect greatly.

[24:56] Gratitude for these relationships that

[24:59] continue to

[25:01] deepen, evolve, heal, expand.

[25:08] Always, forever.

[25:20] Gratitude for this

[25:24] place to come home to.

[25:45] Gratitude for

[25:48] all the love and support,

[25:51] guidance from your spirit team.

[26:05] And taking a moment to notice

[26:10] the pathway

[26:12] within your awareness

[26:17] that brought you here.

[26:24] So you may move your awareness

[26:27] to the sacred,

[26:29] special place

[26:35] moments you could use it the most.

[26:50] Gratitude for this natural pathway.

[26:54] Right here.

[27:03] And placing your hands upon your heart.

[27:11] Sensing into gratitude.

[27:18] For that loving intelligence.

[27:21] The spirit world.

[27:25] That loving intelligence that's beating

[27:27] your heart.

[27:33] The loving intelligence in every cell of

[27:36] your physical body.

[27:45] The loving intelligence.

[27:49] That enchants your mind.

[27:55] In this moment, can you sense

[27:58] no separation

[28:01] from the body and the spirit?

[28:06] How it's all one.

[28:10] Breathe it in.

[28:15] Breathe it out.

[28:23] Fully connected.

[28:27] Fully aligned.

[28:32] The love within and all around you. The

[28:35] love that you are. The love that's

[28:37] everlasting.

[28:42] Breathing it in.

[28:45] Breathing it out.

[28:51] It's been an honor meditating with you

[28:53] and sharing

[28:55] this practice.

[29:01] Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

[29:03] Namaste.

[29:08] And I invite you to

[29:11] either carry on your meditation

[29:15] or if it's time to open your eyes,

[29:18] please do so.

[29:20] But as you open your eyes, can you

[29:23] receive your physical environment?

[29:28] Sensing into that love.

[29:31] That connectedness.

[29:37] It's here always.

[29:39] You're home always.

[29:43] Just a breath away.

[29:46] You're already here.

Sitting for Spirit is a thirty-minute guided meditation led by evidential medium Becky Hesseltine. It invites listeners to acknowledge spirit loved ones, guides and angels, settle the body and breath, and rest awareness in the bond of love without forcing an experience.
Hesseltine describes sitting in the power as focused on understanding the power of the soul and spirit and becoming familiar with spirit worlds. Sitting for Spirit is similar but places more emphasis on acknowledging departed loved ones, spirit team members and guides, and resting awareness with them.
Hesseltine suggests sitting up if you may fall asleep when lying down, though she notes lying down can be restorative. She encourages you to choose whatever posture is right for you in the moment.
Hesseltine asks listeners to give the breath a job: breathing into areas of tension, regulating the nervous system, and bringing the body back to calm and relaxation. The breath is then used to calm the thinking mind.
In the meditation, Hesseltine invites listeners to notice a loving intelligence that beats the heart, was present before birth, and continues after death. She also calls it spirit, describing it as everlasting and the aliveness of love.
She says that around this season many people feel called to connect with spirit, and some say the veil is thinner then. Hesseltine's own view is that connection is always available, and that this time of year offers a chance to deepen it for use throughout the year.
Hesseltine says thoughts will likely arise and that you should acknowledge them without judgment, then come back to the experience of love and spirit. She also encourages letting go of expectations and questions.
