One-Minute Breath Meditation: Noticing Change in Every Breath

Don Reed Simmons
Don Reed Simmons
Aug 10, 2010
3 min de lecture

A one-minute guided pause from Don Reed Simmons asks for very little: feel the breath going in, feel it going out, and leave it alone. Set to the tones of quartz crystal bowls, the clip is built to ease stress in the space of a single minute, and in its final lines it makes a quiet argument that each breath is a small model of life itself. The video, first uploaded in 2010, has been viewed more than 312,000 times.

Lecture · 2 sections

Why does noticing one breath teach us about change?

The instruction is deliberately plain. Simmons asks the listener to connect with the breath "without trying to manipulate or change your pattern of breathing." That clause does most of the work. When people are told to watch their breathing, they often start adjusting it, deepening it or slowing it to perform relaxation. The practice here is to let the breath be what it already is.

From there the guidance moves to the body: relax the jaw, relax the shoulders. These are places where tension tends to gather without being noticed, and the clip treats simply noticing them as enough.

Then comes the turn. "Notice how different one breath is from the next," Simmons says. "It's the same with life, one day one moment different from the next. Ever changing, ever evolving." The observation is simple, but it reframes the stress that sends people looking for a break. A breath does not hold still, and neither does a day. Seeing that in the body can loosen the hold a single hard moment has on the mind.

The clip closes by inviting the listener to let go of whatever is passing through the mind, to "come back to Harmony," and then offers four lines: "you are safe, you are accepted, you are forgiven and you are loved." Those words turn a breathing exercise into a brief act of reassurance.

For context beyond the clip: breath-focused attention appears in many contemplative traditions, and this short piece follows a familiar pattern of breath, body, observation of change, and return. That is a framing of our own, not something Simmons says in the video.

Where to go from here

If this minute of breath awareness appealed to you, explore the rest of Don Reed Simmons's work on his YouTube channel, where he has published other guided meditations. Start with the same instruction that opens this one: notice the breath without trying to change it, and see what shifts across the course of a few minutes.

Questions fréquemment posées

In this clip, Don Reed Simmons asks you to feel yourself breathing in and out without trying to manipulate or change the pattern. He also invites you to relax your jaw and shoulders and to notice how each breath differs from the last.
Simmons compares the variation between one breath and the next to the way each day and moment differs. He describes life as ever changing and ever evolving, which invites the listener to see change as ordinary rather than threatening.
The closing lines are 'you are safe, you are accepted, you are forgiven and you are loved.' They follow the instruction to let go of whatever is passing through the mind and return to a sense of harmony.
