In the winter of 1970, a 19-year-old Canadian named Anasuya Weil boarded a plane to England with nothing but her backpack and a dream she'd carried since childhood. She wasn't looking for Neem Karoli Baba—in fact, she'd heard Ram Dass say on the radio that meeting Maharaj-ji was impossible, that he lived in the remote Himalayas. But something shifted when she heard that interview. In a half-dreamed state, she experienced a spontaneous bliss—the kind of transcendent moment that only comes when the guru calls you across impossible distances.

What began as a solo overland odyssey through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, and eventually India would become one of the most intimate spiritual autobiographies of the '70s spiritual movement, not because it was dramatic, but because it was honest: a teenager seeking herself, stumbling into grace through a series of unlikely meetings, missed connections, and ultimately, a face-to-face encounter with one of the era's most magnetic spiritual teachers.

The Road That Called Her Home

Anasuya had wanted to go to India since age ten, when she read a book on yoga by Indra Devi. One passage struck her: a yogi healing someone on a boat. The image lodged in her mind. By the time she reached McGill University, the pull became irresistible. She lasted one-and-a-half semesters before leaving to travel, knowing her parents would disapprove. "They'd send me back if they catch me," she recalls thinking.

She wasn't traveling alone, exactly—she'd meet people at each leg and continue onward. From England, she hitchhiked through Europe. In Greece, she joined a small group heading to India. They hired a bus from Turkey, and Anasuya rode across Iran. But in Afghanistan, she felt something and got off. She stayed for a month and a half, lingering in a land most Western travelers rushed through. When winter threatened to close the Kyber Pass, she crossed into India just before Christmas.

By then, the path had shifted. She wasn't simply traveling to see India; she was being drawn toward something—or someone—she didn't yet know. In Goa, she heard about the Kumbha Mela. She went north and was offered initiation by a yogi named Ram Charas, a disciple of Deoraja Baba, in his 70s or 80s. He asked if she wanted a mantra. She said yes, not understanding what it meant. It was the first real spiritual commitment she'd made.

Meetings That Weren't Accidents

In Bombay, a letter awaited her: her friend couldn't come after all. Stranded with no money, Anasuya enrolled in a Vipassana meditation course—partly because it was cheaper than a hotel. "I wasn't going to do it," she explains. "I was just thinking, well, this is quiet. People don't have to notice me. I'll just keep to myself."

But something shifted in the silence. She took to Vipassana deeply. She did a second course, and this time she met Mirabai. She also met Krishna, who had just returned from a yatra with Ram Dass and had been with Muktananda.

After the retreat, Anasuya traveled to Ganeshpuri to meet Muktananda at his ashram, and then north to Badrinath to meet Bo Pul, her teacher at the time. But when she arrived, he wasn't there—he was helping villagers with their harvest.

Meanwhile, Danny (another Westerner she'd met), Krishna, and others had met with Maharaj-ji in Bindavan. Danny mentioned a girl he'd met in Bombay. Maharaj-ji asked to see her picture. Danny showed him. "Where is she?" Maharaj-ji asked. "She's in Badrinath with her guru," Danny said.

Maharaj-ji looked at the photograph and said nothing, handing it back.

The next day, Maharaj-ji asked to see the picture again. This time he said: "She's in Badrinath, but she's not with her guru. She loves you very much. She loves you in the proper way—the way Sita loves Ram. And you'll marry her."

Word reached Anasuya in Delhi through Danny. "I was like, well, I want to meet this person who's saying these things about me," she says. She was staying with Ramdev in the Palace Heights Hotel when he offered to drive to see Maharaj-ji in Kanchi. She asked if she could come. He said no. She said she'd take the public bus instead. He relented. "Okay, she can come."

The Moment Before Words

When Anasuya first saw Maharaj-ji, she was overwhelmed. "I was young, I was 19. I was there on my own. I had just fallen in love—and I mean really fallen in love. I wasn't expecting to feel that way." She found herself sitting down near his feet.

But what happened next had nothing to do with romance. "I sat down and I was completely flabbergasted, and I didn't know what to think or what to do." She was in his presence—the presence of someone utterly awake to her, utterly aware, utterly himself. "It was a zen moment," she says now. "He looked at me and then he said, 'You stay. You have a baby. You'll give me a son.'"

Anasuya was shocked. She'd never spoken of wanting children. She hadn't married Danny yet (though Maharaj-ji was clearly ahead of the curve on that one). "I couldn't speak," she remembers. "He was very tender with me at that moment. And then he said, 'Are you okay? You're like a little bird.' He brought me some hot milk."

The care in that gesture—the milk, the tenderness, the complete attunement—revealed something essential about how Maharaj-ji worked. He didn't perform spirituality. He simply paid attention.

The Embodiment of Service

Anasuya stayed with Maharaj-ji for nine months in 1971, visiting nearly every day through May. What struck her most was his total presence to the small, ordinary moments of people's lives. "The little things about people's daily lives seemed as important to him as anything else," she reflects. "He really wanted to make sure everyone was taken care of. He was really the embodiment of being of service, of Hanuman."

Hanuman—the monkey god devoted entirely to Ram, asking nothing for himself, moving only to serve—was not just Maharaj-ji's ideal; it was his practice. Whether it was someone's hunger, a child's crying, or the depth of a visitor's inner struggle, Maharaj-ji responded with the same quality of attention. He didn't distinguish between the "spiritual" and the "mundane." Everything was alive to him.

There was the story of the blanket. Ram Dass had given Maharaj-ji a blanket, and Maharaj-ji kept placing it on Anasuya in different moments—sometimes during the day, sometimes in a dream. "At the moment it was like a koan," she says, "a question without an answer. It was like, 'I know nothing. You know nothing.' It was nonverbal communication."

Or the time Maharaj-ji asked her about someone she knew, and when she gave a name, he said: "Not that one. The other one." When she asked how he knew, his response was immediate: "He'd say to me, 'Do you understand?' And the answer was always yes, in a way that had nothing to do with the mind."

Non-Attachment as Love

One of Maharaj-ji's teachings that lodged deepest in Anasuya concerned attachment and the spiritual life. He spoke of becoming "like a lotus above the water"—rooted, present, blooming, yet untouched by the waters of circumstance. It wasn't detachment; it was a kind of luminous freedom within relationship.

When Maharaj-ji asked Anasuya if she was going to stay in India, she hesitated. She'd promised to return to America. "I said to Maharaji, 'You told me not to be attached.' And he acknowledged it, he said, 'Yes, you did.' And then he said, 'And it was perfectly right. But you have to go back.'" The teaching was that non-attachment didn't mean fleeing; it meant honoring your commitments while remaining free.

She did return to America. She married Danny (as foretold). She raised children—her own and others'. She continued her Buddhist practice, which Maharaj-ji had blessed. But the thread of his presence never left her.

Communion Beyond Form

One of the most intimate aspects of Anasuya's relationship with her guru was something that continued long after she left India: communion in the dreamspace. "He would come to me in dreams," she explains simply. Maharaj-ji was the kind of teacher who understood that guru means "one who removes darkness"—and the darkness extends far beyond what we know in waking life.

In these dreams, instruction continued. The teaching didn't stop when the physical form was no longer present. What Maharaj-ji had transmitted was not dependent on geography or even on whether he was in the body. It was an awakening, a transmission of presence itself.
