Is Mediumship a Cure for Grief? A Medium's Honest Answer

À regarder · 6

Ask whether mediumship can cure grief and the honest answer, according to medium Karen Frances McCarthy, is no, and the reasons she gives are more useful than a yes would have been. In a Q&A video published on her channel in November 2025, McCarthy argues that contact with a loved one who has passed does not restore the physical presence that grief responds to. She describes grief not as a problem to be finished but as a weight to be carried differently over time. And she makes a less expected claim: that people who have been most wounded often become the most compassionate, and that turning pain outward into small acts of kindness can be the very thing that keeps a person connected to the people they have lost. What follows unpacks her argument, the ideas beneath it, and what it asks of anyone who is grieving and curious about afterlife communication.

Can mediumship cure grief at all?

The answer arrives in the first breath of the video. "First, let me say this work is not a substitute for grieving," McCarthy begins (0:06). She is not dodging the question. She is setting a boundary before anything else can be said. Her point is that the thing grief responds to, the absence of a body in a room, does not disappear because a loved one's presence can be felt or heard through mediumship.

She separates what remains from what has gone. The essence of a person, "their personality, their spirit, which is everything that you've known about them other than the bag of bones," is still present, she says. But "the physical separation is not there." Something has been lost regardless, and she insists it be named and grieved rather than bypassed. Communication, in her framing, is real and can make "a huge difference to our lives," but it is not a bandage over the wound.

This is a distinction worth holding onto. A lot of people arrive at mediumship hoping it will end the ache. McCarthy is telling them, plainly and early, that it will change the ache without ending it, and that treating a reading as a cure can leave a grieving person feeling they have failed when the pain returns.

Why is grief described as a weight rather than a wound to heal?

The metaphor she chooses matters. "The grief is a weight, right? It's heavy," she says (1:14). Weight is something you can set down for a while, adjust how you carry, and recognize as something your loved ones would not want you to carry all the time. Her line that "your loved ones don't want you carrying that weight around with you all the time" is a gentle reframing of what the people who died would want for the living.

From there she takes aim at a common kind of consolation. Many people who have lost a spouse will recognize the phrase "you'll find somebody new," or the instruction to simply "get over it." McCarthy calls these responses out directly. People hear them and think they are being kind, but they miss that the heart connection and "the blending of spirit" does not dissolve with a new relationship or a new life. Someone who has lost a partner is not automatically looking to replace them, she notes, and treating grief as a timetable misunderstands what is actually happening.

Her most important reframe comes next: "We don't get over it. We just learn to live differently with our new circumstances" (2:19). This is the working idea of her whole answer. Grief is not a stage that ends with a clean exit. It is a relationship that changes shape. A person can be grieving "still" for years and still build a full life around the loss.

Why do we keep asking the what-ifs we can never answer?

Almost every bereaved person carries the same set of questions: the "ifonies and whatifs," in McCarthy's phrasing, the could-have-been and should-have-been. She does not dismiss them. Instead she makes an argument about the limits of perspective. "We don't know what the soul's path is," she says, and we do not necessarily know what we or our loved ones chose (4:40).

She describes our vantage point as a worm's-eye view, limited to what we can see from inside our skin and bones. Her suggestion is that the meaning of a death may not be visible from here at all. "Sometimes it's not until we get back to the spirit world that all of these pieces can fall into place," she says. Until then, the instruction is modest: "we've just got to muddle along."

For someone in the thick of self-blame, this is a meaningful shift. It does not argue that the loss is justified. It argues that the demand for a complete explanation is one the living are not equipped to meet, and that trying to meet it often becomes its own form of suffering.

What does service have to do with healing grief?

This is the part of the talk that turns the answer from a caveat into a path. McCarthy observes that "the people who have been most hurt in life" can, if they allow themselves to grieve, offer "the greatest amount of service and connection" to others who are suffering (3:30). She calls these "odd gifts" found in the darkest moments, and her claim is that pain, once it has been honored, can become something useful to someone else.

She goes further: "I would say that probably the most awakened and the most enlightened people are those who find a way to be of service and help to other people" (5:48). Her qualifier is important. She is not telling anyone to rush out and start volunteering to prove their recovery. "I'm not saying run out and start trying to help old ladies cross the road," she says, with a dry humor that keeps the idea grounded. The impulse toward compassion, she says, "naturally starts to arise" as a person moves through loss.

She is also clear about the limits of her own role. In the opening passage she tells listeners who are struggling to go to a grief counselor or a support group. Mediumship, she says, is not the place to be told to simply push through. The service she describes is something that grows alongside proper support, not a substitute for it.

Does kindness actually help you connect with a loved one who has died?

McCarthy's answer here has two layers, and the second is subtle. First she tells the audience not to misread her: "don't think for a minute I'm saying go out and do 10 nice things for the people in the day. That'll help my communication with my loved one." The kindness is not a technique. "We're not doing it. We're doing it for its own sake," she says (7:16).

Then she describes what happens when people do it anyway. "Everybody in some way, shape, or form is in some sort of pain," she says, and "everybody needs a little bit of kindness and a little bit of compassion." When a person takes those small openings, she says, "it will actually uplift you even in the smallest ways." Those upliftments, she adds, "help you also with your communication with your loved one."

The logic is not mystical so much as attentional. She notes that people who are always looking for signs become more aware of the world around them: "by definition, because you're out there looking for stuff." A person who moves through the day with kindness and openness is simply more receptive, more present, and less consumed by the weight they were carrying. She frames the shift as gradual, with "tiny little breadcrumbs of kindness" accumulating until a person is "actually living in a state of kindness and compassion." Her observation that someone who "half the time... doesn't want to move through the world at all" might nonetheless find themselves doing so again is one of the most humane lines in the talk.

What role do meditation and practice play?

The auto-generated transcript grows fragmentary in the second half of the video, so it is harder to reconstruct her full argument on practice. Two threads are clear enough to note. She refers to setting aside a number of minutes a day "to sit in that practice," and she describes sensitivity as something that develops with consistent attention rather than arriving all at once. Anyone who wants her precise method will need to watch the original video, where the context is intact.

Where to go from here

McCarthy's answer to whether mediumship can cure grief is a clear no. What she offers instead is a more demanding and more hopeful picture. Grief is a weight, not a defect. You do not get over it; you learn to live differently with it. The questions you cannot answer about why and how may not be answerable from where you stand. And the pain that comes with loss can, slowly and without forcing, turn outward into compassion that benefits others and, in her view, keeps you more open to the connection you are seeking.

If you are grieving, her direct advice is worth taking seriously: seek a grief counselor or a support group, and treat communication with the people you have lost as one part of a larger recovery rather than its finish line. If you are curious about mediumship, watch the full Q&A on McCarthy's channel and listen for the difference she draws between comfort and cure. The difference is the whole point.

[0:06] First, let me say

[0:08] this work is not a substitute for

[0:10] grieving. This does not you can't you

[0:13] grief is grief, right? Regardless,

[0:16] you're going to grieve. The physical

[0:18] presence of your loved one is gone. um

[0:22] their their their their their essence,

[0:25] their personality, their spirit, which

[0:27] is everything that you've known about

[0:28] them other than the bag of bones is

[0:30] still present. But the physical um the

[0:34] physical separation is um is not there.

[0:38] So regardless something has been lost as

[0:42] you like I need to tell you that you all

[0:44] know that um but that needs to be grie

[0:46] you need to grieve that regardless. So

[0:48] communicating with your loved ones is

[0:51] all very well, but there is still an

[0:53] element of loss there. So this is not

[0:55] going to eliminate the grief. I would

[0:58] encourage you to allow yourself to

[1:00] grieve because the grief is a weight,

[1:03] right? It's heavy and you know and this

[1:06] has got this has not got nothing to do

[1:08] with communication, but you really you

[1:10] just don't want to be carrying that

[1:11] weight around with you all of the time

[1:13] and your loved ones don't want you

[1:14] carrying that weight around with you all

[1:16] the time. So, just a couple of briefly

[1:18] words about grief is first of all, I see

[1:20] all the time people saying, "Oh, get

[1:22] over it." Those of you who have lost

[1:25] spouses, you've probably heard lots of

[1:27] people say, "Oh, you'll find somebody

[1:29] new." Right? Many of you have heard that

[1:32] who've lost spouses. Yeah. Oh, don't

[1:34] worry about you're young, you'll find

[1:36] someone else. Right? And you're going,

[1:37] "I don't particularly want no particular

[1:39] interest in finding somebody else." Do

[1:41] you know or you know, it's just it's

[1:44] different. But people don't understand

[1:46] that these heart connections remain

[1:49] these these these this bond and the

[1:52] blending of spirit the spirits still

[1:55] remains and that not everybody whose

[1:57] husband or wife um has passed the spirit

[2:00] world is really running out down to you

[2:03] know hal done to to buy a new wedding

[2:05] dress. Do you know what I mean? or so.

[2:08] So, we want to just first of all

[2:10] acknowledge that

[2:12] a lot of the time people just don't know

[2:14] what to say.

[2:17] So, I would encourage you if you're

[2:19] grieving still, well, you're always

[2:20] grieving. We don't the thing about grief

[2:23] is is that we don't get over it. We just

[2:26] learn to live differently with our new

[2:29] circumstances, right? That's all that we

[2:32] do, right? And and it can be very

[2:35] enriching. And I actually find that some

[2:37] of times the people who have been most

[2:39] wounded

[2:40] are those who are most compassionate and

[2:42] most empathetic. So in a way even though

[2:46] the loss of your loved one has knocked

[2:48] you out of your socks you know and in

[2:51] many many times often losing the will to

[2:54] live yourself. There can actually be

[2:58] especially when you understand that your

[3:00] loved one is still present with you. It

[3:02] still loves you. Still wants you to be

[3:04] happy.

[3:05] There can actually be a great amount of

[3:08] empathy and help and service that you

[3:11] can be to other people by virtue of your

[3:14] loss.

[3:16] You know, I find that the people who

[3:18] have been most hurt in life, sometimes

[3:22] if you allow yourself grieve that hurt

[3:25] can really offer the greatest amount of

[3:28] service and connection for other people

[3:30] who are suffering as well, you know. So

[3:32] there are these sort of odd gifts that

[3:36] we can find in those darkest moments

[3:42] that pain

[3:44] can actually become something that can

[3:47] be very very helpful to other people

[3:51] which in itself brings a whole uh new

[3:54] world of reward with it. Right? But if

[3:57] you are grieving and if you are

[3:59] struggling and by all means anybody who

[4:02] needs that help, please go and get that

[4:03] help from a grief counselor or from a

[4:05] support group or something because

[4:07] mediumship or afterlife communication

[4:10] while it does make a huge difference to

[4:12] our lives is not going to make the grief

[4:15] go away.

[4:18] Right? Because the physical presence is

[4:20] still there. All of the ifonies and

[4:22] whatifs and the could have been or

[4:24] should have been, those are there,

[4:26] right? That said, we don't know what

[4:29] could have been or should have been. And

[4:30] probably what happened is what could

[4:32] have been or should have been. Like we

[4:33] really don't know what the soul's path

[4:36] is. We don't know what our own soul's

[4:38] path is necessarily. We don't know what

[4:40] we chose. We don't know what your loved

[4:42] ones chose. We don't know. We can't see

[4:45] from our little vantage point of the

[4:47] worms. We've got the worm's eye view on

[4:49] life in our skin and bones, right? But

[4:52] sometimes it's not until we get back to

[4:54] the spirit world that all of these

[4:56] pieces can fall into place and they

[4:57] begin to make sense to us. Meanwhile,

[5:00] we've just got to muddle along, right?

[5:10] I would say that probably the most

[5:12] awakened and the most enlightened people

[5:14] are those who find a way to be of

[5:16] service and help to other people. And

[5:19] that in a way, especially when we are in

[5:21] pain,

[5:23] can bring some really profound sense of

[5:25] purpose and meaning to our lives. So,

[5:28] I'm not saying run out and start trying

[5:29] to help old ladies cross the road or

[5:31] anything like that. But I'm saying that

[5:32] as you go, you will start finding that

[5:35] impulse to that compassion naturally

[5:38] starts to arise within which is a

[5:40] beautiful thing. God knows we could deal

[5:41] with a lot more of it in the world,

[5:43] right? But certainly it can arise out of

[5:46] out of this sort of grief. So, there are

[5:48] lots of really beautiful things that you

[5:51] can do and you can contribute to the

[5:52] world while you're here which really

[5:54] will bring meaning to your life. And I

[5:56] am of a firm belief that when you get to

[5:58] the spirit world, those are the things

[6:00] you'll be very thankful for having had

[6:03] that ability to be able to make a

[6:05] difference in the lives of other people.

[6:07] So don't discount that. And if you you

[6:09] will find in the smallest ways even

[6:12] sometimes that that you you'll naturally

[6:14] your compassion naturally lends to that

[6:16] and your awareness naturally lends to

[6:18] it. You know, you become more aware of

[6:20] the world around you, you know. So you

[6:23] can when you're when you're always

[6:24] looking for signs, you're always more

[6:26] aware of the world out there, right? By

[6:28] definition, because you're out there

[6:29] looking for stuff, you know? So you'll

[6:32] see you'll see. So just be mindful of

[6:34] that as you go over through the next

[6:35] four weeks,

[6:37] as you move through the world, just

[6:40] remember that everybody in some way,

[6:41] shape, or form is in some sort of a

[6:43] pain, some sort of pain.

[6:46] And everybody needs a little bit of

[6:47] kindness and a little bit of compassion.

[6:49] And where you see an opportunity to be

[6:51] compassionate or to be kind, take the

[6:53] opportunity and notice how it makes you

[6:55] feel.

[6:58] It will actually uplift you even in the

[7:01] smallest ways. That little upliftment

[7:04] and those little upliftments help you

[7:06] also with your communication with your

[7:09] loved one. Right? So don't think for a

[7:11] minute I'm saying go out and do 10 nice

[7:13] things for the people in the day.

[7:15] That'll help my communication with my

[7:16] loved one. We're not doing it. We're

[7:19] doing it for its own sake, right? We're

[7:21] doing it for authentically. All right?

[7:24] The tiniest things. They can be tiniest

[7:26] things, but they will make you be

[7:27] surprised. When you are moving through

[7:29] the world with greater awareness, as you

[7:31] do, the more you do this work, the more

[7:33] you move through the world with this

[7:34] greater awareness, the more you will

[7:35] find those moments, moments, and

[7:37] moments. And before you know it, you're

[7:39] actually living in a state of kindness

[7:40] and compassion. And who would have

[7:42] thought from where you are or where

[7:45] you've been that you could ever move

[7:47] through the world with compassion and

[7:49] kindness again. Right? Because half the

[7:50] time you just don't want to move through

[7:51] the world at all anymore. Right?

[7:54] But do bear that in mind that actually

[7:56] you're probably saying, "Why is she

[7:57] talking about we're supposed to be

[7:58] learning to communicate?" This is

[8:00] actually will help you. This will help

[8:02] you because it will help you feel more

[8:05] uplifted, more positive, and feel like

[8:08] you've got more meaning as you move

[8:09] through the world with all of these

[8:11] little tiny little tiny breadcrumbs of

[8:13] kindness that you toss around just for

[8:16] the sake of being a good person. And

[8:17] ultimately, the vibration, I don't use

[8:20] those words, they're very, they're very

[8:21] newagy. don't tend to use them. But that

[8:23] vibration that you are on, that

[8:25] upliftment will make a difference to you

[8:28] being able to reach your loved ones.

[8:31] Right now, one caveat I want to say is

[8:34] if you're struggling to reach your loved

[8:35] ones, don't go, I must not be kind

[8:37] enough or I must not be compassionate

[8:38] enough. I can't hear them. That's that's

[8:40] not the case. Right?

[8:42] There's a gradual gradual process. This

[8:44] does not happen overnight. This is why

[8:46] for starters this course is four weeks

[8:48] long because I want you to do practices

[8:50] each week during the week.

[8:58] A key part of um of being able to move

[9:02] into an altered state to communicate

[9:03] with your loved ones is that practice

[9:05] sitting in the power that I gave you

[9:06] that we gave you the recording for. So

[9:08] that's a key key part of this. So I

[9:11] highly recommend you try to find 12 15

[9:14] minutes a day to sit in that practice.

[9:16] If you've got more time, pause it, sit

[9:19] for half an hour if you can. All right,

[9:22] that is a very But I will say it's a

[9:23] very sensitizing practice. Very

[9:26] sensitizing. When you become more

[9:28] sensitive to the spirit world, what

[9:29] happens?

[9:31] Become more sensitive to the physical

[9:33] world. Right?

[9:34] So somebody could say something to you

[9:36] and you just find yourself bursting out

[9:38] crying all of a sudden for no particular

[9:41] reason just because you're becoming more

[9:42] sensitive. So just be aware of that that

[9:44] it does sensitize you as you go.

[9:52] The the signs can often be stronger at

[9:54] the store for a couple of reasons. One

[9:55] is the the the sort of um the sort of

[9:59] very spiritist sort of version of that

[10:01] is because the um the spirit is is

[10:05] we're very dense, right? We are very

[10:07] dense in our bones and the spirit world

[10:10] is much that there's was much more

[10:12] subtle and when we die first we retain

[10:14] some of that density that over time

[10:17] becomes more and more subtle and so that

[10:20] initially it's very easy for our loved

[10:22] ones to be manipulating and moving stuff

[10:24] because their their energy is denser

[10:26] because they're just more recently out

[10:28] of their out of the bag of bones. But

[10:30] over time they will become lighter and

[10:32] more and more subtle and that energy

[10:34] becomes more subtle. So that's one

[10:36] reason. Now they've gone anywhere. It's

[10:38] just the density of the energy has

[10:40] changed a little bit. Um the other

[10:42] reason that can happen is um that

[10:45] initially

[10:46] um and this happened to me is that they

[10:49] sort of need to do all these magnificent

[10:51] displays of paranormal activity to try

[10:54] to get your attention.

[10:57] Right? Once they've got their your

[10:59] attention and you go, "Oh, that's what

[11:01] that is." then there's no need for them

[11:02] to keep doing that because it takes

[11:04] enormous amount of energy,

[11:07] you know. So, what we can do and what

[11:09] we're what I'm going to hopefully be

[11:10] able to lead you through in this class

[11:12] is how you can adjust your energetic

[11:15] state even while in your physical body

[11:18] to sort of elevate that into a more

[11:21] subtle state. So, you can kind of meet

[11:24] them halfway.

[11:26] So them having to come plunk down, start

[11:28] turning the lights on, you can meet them

[11:29] up here and you can get a sense of them,

[11:31] right?

[11:38] There will come a point you'll have to

[11:40] at some point you're going to have to

[11:42] just decide

[11:45] just decide

[11:46] to suspend disbelief.

[11:49] You're just going to have to be open to

[11:51] it because for as long as you're going

[11:54] nah nah nah they will nobody's ever

[11:57] going to convince a skeptic.

[11:59] You're really going it's going to be a

[12:01] gradual process of getting to a point

[12:03] where intuitively you understand that's

[12:06] my son or daughter partner whoever

[12:09] friend. All right. So, I'm going to ask

[12:12] you for the moment to set that intention

[12:15] for the next four weeks that you're

[12:17] whatever you ask for, you're going to be

[12:19] open to receive it. Not ask for

[12:21] something and then be sort of like, nah,

[12:23] I don't know if that's it, you know?

[12:28] Okay. So, just take that step. I'm not

[12:31] saying that you have to absolutely

[12:33] emphatically believe, but you have to be

[12:35] open to the fact that this is my loved

[12:37] one,

[12:39] right? just to be open to it and then

[12:42] after the 10th, 20th, 50th time the

[12:45] penny will gradually will actually drop.

[12:47] Do you know what I mean? But it's not

[12:49] going you there's no point in going in

[12:51] rejecting everything all the time and

[12:53] expecting someday the a bolt of

[12:55] lightning is going to come from the sky

[12:57] and spell their name out in flames on

[12:59] your path.

[13:01] That's not going to happen, right?

[13:04] It's not going to come as one bolt of

[13:07] lightning from the sky. It's going to

[13:09] come from you being open to leaving this

[13:12] and then the next and then the next and

[13:13] then oh it's almost like creating a body

[13:15] of work

[13:17] and then over time you'll be like yeah

[13:19] now I see that so I would say to you for

[13:23] those of you who mentioned doubt and and

[13:26] belief that's the best way to start

[13:29] dealing with that you just have to

[13:30] choose to start

[13:33] anyone to just be if you ask for

[13:35] something just be open to the

[13:37] possibility busy. All right. Whatever

[13:40] comes your way, just take it. That could

[13:42] be it. And say thank you.

[13:44] Whether you completely believe it or

[13:46] not, gradually over time with these that

[13:49] shift will start. You have to turn a

[13:51] corner on this, right? You're not just

[13:54] going to get a wall up in the head.

[13:56] You're going to have to take a make turn

[13:58] a corner on it. And you can only turn a

[14:00] corner by taking steps one after the

[14:02] other, right? Or being willing to be

[14:04] led, whatever way you want to look at

[14:06] it.

[14:12] loved one is still the same person they

[14:14] were when they were here. Gradually

[14:15] people change over time the same way as

[14:17] gradually people here change over time,

[14:20] right? But initially going to be the

[14:21] same person lands there that was here

[14:23] and then over time there'll be these

[14:25] small changes hopefully in them and it's

[14:28] really how fast they change and how fast

[14:30] they grow and heal and all of that

[14:31] depends on them. Some people,

[14:34] you know, my mother within a year of

[14:36] passing was Jesus. She was amazing. But

[14:39] then I've had other people's come out

[14:41] somebody come the father one time took

[14:43] 22 years to even be able to acknowledge

[14:46] what he did wrong. 22 years everyone in

[14:50] their own time. Do you know we don't get

[14:52] there get we don't get there sprout

[14:54] wings and get handed a harp in the

[14:56] cloud. Right? We continue to graft and

[14:59] we continue to grow and all the only

[15:01] differences is we don't have the bones

[15:03] bag of bones.

[15:12] Has anyone heard that somebody's lost?

[15:14] They died and they got lost on the way

[15:16] to heaven.

[15:17] I mean how can you get lost on the way

[15:19] to heaven?

[15:21] Well, we understand we are one unending

[15:24] wave of consciousness that we are all

[15:25] part of. That's how psychics can work.

[15:27] That's how healing can work. That's how

[15:29] all of this works because we are all

[15:30] fundamentally connected. Animals are

[15:32] fantastic. For those of you with animals

[15:34] in the spirit world, animals are

[15:35] fantastic at this because they don't

[15:37] have this nonsense that we have. They're

[15:39] very much in the present, right?

[15:44] No. First of all, the one thing I

[15:45] absolutely emphatically know, or at

[15:47] least in the thousands of people that

[15:49] I've communicated with and the thousand

[15:51] and the hundreds of people I've sat with

[15:52] who are dying, nobody dies alone.

[15:58] Nobody dies alone. There was always a

[16:01] gathering.

[16:03] Always a gathering. And the loved ones

[16:06] usually can see that gathering. And some

[16:10] of you have sat with people who are who

[16:12] are sick and dying. And you know, you'll

[16:14] start to see they start to look up in

[16:15] the corners and gaps in the rooms,

[16:17] right? They're seeing the gathering from

[16:20] the other side, right? Coming.

[16:24] And I often say, how can if if your

[16:28] granny, your mother, your uncle, your

[16:30] the postman, everybody showed up at the

[16:32] bedside to collect you at the moment of

[16:34] your death

[16:36] and take you off. How did they how did

[16:38] you get lost? Or do they forget about

[16:41] you? They came the whole way to get you

[16:43] and then they what went and went oh like

[16:45] they like they left the baby on the bus.

[16:47] Like seriously,

[16:51] nobody dies alone. Nobody gets lost. How

[16:53] can you get lost?

[16:56] I had somebody one time the um son died

[17:01] by suicide

[17:03] and some medium told them the mother

[17:05] that he was lost because he couldn't get

[17:08] into heaven because of the suicide.

[17:12] Why on earth

[17:15] would you say something like that? Even

[17:17] if you believed it, clearly you did. Why

[17:19] would you even say something that

[17:20] stupid? And in all honesty, this is why,

[17:23] you know, I believe all mediums should

[17:25] be really go through four years of

[17:26] training so that they're not carrying

[17:29] around these ridiculous beliefs and then

[17:31] passing them on to vulnerable people.

[17:36] But they do. It happens all the time,

[17:39] you know. So absolute nonsense. Absolute

[17:43] nonsense. All of it. I've communicated

[17:45] with lots of people who have died by

[17:47] suicide and I can assure you that they

[17:50] are always there enveloped with their

[17:52] loved ones, enveloped with healing

[17:54] guides, enveloped with the healers who

[17:56] are there to help them heal.

[18:07] Let me just put it to you this way. If

[18:09] um if you had somebody who was running

[18:10] around on their feet, right, and their

[18:13] son has just died and they're grieving,

[18:18] um what would

[18:20] your response be? How would you behave

[18:23] in that situ scenario?

[18:28] Do you know what I mean? If you're like

[18:29] a friend of yours, for example, or

[18:32] somebody else comes to you and they're

[18:34] grieving, how would you respond? You

[18:36] tried to comfort them, right? You tried

[18:39] to help them. You tried to comfort them.

[18:41] You tried to make them feel a little bit

[18:43] better for in whatever way you could,

[18:44] right?

[18:46] You don't suddenly start taking on and

[18:49] feeling the full weight of their grief

[18:50] in you. You might feel you might feel a

[18:52] little sad for them, but it's not going

[18:54] to be it's not going to be the ex you're

[18:57] not going to actually experience their

[18:59] grief. You're just going to feel sad and

[19:02] compassionate and kind and try to be

[19:04] helpful and try to be comforting. Right?

[19:07] So, what's your son doing? Do you think

[19:09] he's doing the same thing? He's loves

[19:12] his mom and he wants to help his mom and

[19:14] he wants to comfort his mother, right?

[19:19] But he's not going to be all of a

[19:21] sudden, you know, falling apart because

[19:24] you're falling apart. He's going to be

[19:25] there saying, "My mother's falling

[19:26] apart. Let me go see if I can help her.

[19:30] All this stuff makes sense once you

[19:32] challenge the other stuff that doesn't

[19:33] make sense, right? Because what would

[19:36] your son do if he was here? Wouldn't he

[19:38] come up to you and probably put his arm

[19:39] around you, tried to comfort you or

[19:40] something? Wouldn't isn't that what he

[19:41] would do? That's what he's still doing.

[19:44] You know, your grief is not going to you

[19:47] if you're coming apart to the seams,

[19:49] that's not going to make him come apart

[19:51] to the seams. that's going to make him

[19:52] just come and try to give you a hug and

[19:55] offer you some kindness and compassion

[19:56] and love and try to make you feel a

[19:58] little bit better because he wants

[19:59] because you're as a mother and he loves

[20:01] you. Yeah, you got to remember your son

[20:04] is fine.

[20:06] You know, he's fine and we experience

[20:08] the loss. We experience the distance but

[20:11] they don't really because they are

[20:12] actually closer to us than they have

[20:14] ever been because they can actually hear

[20:16] all our thoughts now. They are blended

[20:18] and mindto- mind connected with us now.

[20:21] So they're actually closer to us than

[20:23] they were when they were in their

[20:24] backbones.

[20:27] We feel the difference, but they don't

[20:30] feel that in the way we do.

[20:38] Um in many people and they are always

[20:43] first of all there's always a gathering

[20:45] with them like everybody else as they

[20:48] pass.

[20:50] Do you honestly think that all of that

[20:52] and everything that happens in the

[20:54] non-physical reality, all these

[20:56] connections that we have are bridged by

[20:59] love? The most horrible people have come

[21:01] back to me. Horrible fathers have come

[21:03] back to me contrite

[21:06] because they get there and that's the

[21:08] world and that's the experience they

[21:09] have and they're able to see life

[21:10] differently. Do you honestly think that

[21:13] we get to that space and they go, "Oh,

[21:16] no. You no, you go back. You had a

[21:18] horrible time. So we're sending you back

[21:20] for more.

[21:23] Anybody who has died by suicide in my

[21:26] experience of communicating directly

[21:28] with them is that they are received by

[21:31] those who love them

[21:34] and they were and they are healed by

[21:37] being surrounded by those who love them.

[21:41] And that was their story. Some people

[21:44] don't seem to be meant to be on the

[21:46] planet for very long. I have never met

[21:50] somebody who died by who died by suicide

[21:53] who was like, "Oh no, that was a big

[21:55] mistake. I shouldn't have been there."

[21:56] Because they get there and they have

[21:57] this additional knowledge. They have

[21:59] this additional information and they can

[22:01] see it because we think it's all very

[22:03] separate. We think we're here and

[22:05] they're over there, up there, there

[22:06] somewhere else. What we forget is that

[22:07] they can see there is only the stream

[22:10] and we are all in it all the time. There

[22:14] is no conceivable way

[22:17] that somebody dies by suicide to put an

[22:20] put an end to whatever pain they were in

[22:24] and then gets to the other side and

[22:27] there's some psychopath up there says go

[22:29] back and do it again. How does that even

[22:34] make sense for people to even come out

[22:36] with something dumb as that? People die.

[22:39] No matter who it is, they die no matter

[22:40] how they die. They're all greeted and

[22:42] all gather and they're all taken care of

[22:44] and everybody continues to heal and

[22:45] grow. And a lot of people

[22:49] go to spirit world early for whatever

[22:52] reason. That was their story. Your story

[22:55] is just your story. It's the way you

[22:57] write it.

[23:00] And if your story moves from chapter 10

[23:03] on the planet to chapter 11 in the

[23:06] afterlife, that's the way you wrote your

[23:08] story. That's your business.

[23:11] Nobody else can tell you that's not your

[23:13] story.

[23:19] If you sit with yourself, you begin to

[23:22] get very much more familiar with your

[23:25] own presence, with your own energy, with

[23:27] your own physicality, with what's yours,

[23:30] right? What's you? So that as we do

[23:33] these practices and you get more

[23:35] sensitive

[23:37] um it will be much easier to recognize

[23:41] where the energy of another has stepped

[23:43] into your space with you

[23:46] because you'll feel that subtle shift.

[23:49] Oh that feels slightly different you

[23:52] know. So even if

[23:55] um you know you could be just sort of

[23:57] wake up lying in the bed and just call

[23:58] to somebody to are you here? Can you

[24:00] hear me? Let me do, you know, and you'll

[24:02] actually start to after only eventually

[24:04] after only a few seconds, you'll start

[24:07] to feel a very subtle shift

[24:10] in how it feels to be just sort of lying

[24:13] in the bed as you're waking up, you

[24:16] know, and then you know this person has

[24:18] come in. But to to recognize that subtle

[24:20] shift, you have to know what it's like

[24:22] just to be you and your energy. And your

[24:24] energy is going to change whether you're

[24:25] in a good mood, a bad mood, wake, sleep,

[24:27] tired, full life, whatever. But the more

[24:30] you get to really sense and become aware

[24:33] there's a lot of the work they do in

[24:34] sematic therapy as well is just that

[24:36] sense of like being very much aware of

[24:38] your own body and your own energy

[24:40] becomes very easy well much easier to

[24:43] sense when somebody else has stepped in.

[24:45] So those of you who go, I keep speaking

[24:47] to my son and my daughter, my husband

[24:49] and my mother, whatever, and I'm never

[24:51] aware of your presence. Your mother is

[24:54] going to be or your loved one is going

[24:55] to be drawing close. But unless you are

[24:57] able to tell the difference in that very

[25:00] subtle shift, you won't recognize that

[25:02] they've drawns all the doing it all the

[25:04] time.

[25:06] All the time. But we need to be able to

[25:08] still the mind understand and recognize

[25:11] our own energy signature. So the thing

[25:13] is is that always constantly throughout

[25:15] the day as you turn your mind to your

[25:18] loved ones they are going to draw close

[25:22] guaranteed

[25:24] you know and um what we're trying to do

[25:27] part of what we're trying to do in this

[25:29] class is help you with practices that

[25:31] you can continue and you can take away

[25:33] to help you then you know become um to

[25:38] recognize the subtle shift you know now

[25:41] sometimes s that will happen um where

[25:45] you know um you just sort of ch do any

[25:48] of you just sort of sit there and just

[25:49] chat to your loved one. I do it all the

[25:52] time. Yeah. All the time just like my

[25:53] mother in particular you know at this

[25:55] point it's always especially when I'm

[25:57] trying to cook for people it's my mother

[25:59] and because I have all her pots and all

[26:01] her stuff here in this apartment. So um

[26:04] you know so when my mother my mother and

[26:06] it becomes more subtle you see over

[26:08] time.

[26:10] So initially when somebody passes it's

[26:12] the that energetic signature is much

[26:14] stronger and much easier to sense but

[26:16] over time it becomes more subtle and so

[26:19] to meet it we need to be able to become

[26:21] more subtle.

[26:27] You may feel just an opening of the

[26:28] heart. Or you may just feel calmer,

[26:31] you know, or you might have a physical

[26:33] sensation like like um you know like

[26:36] something touching like a little feather

[26:38] touching your forehead or something or

[26:40] something on your hair or you know a

[26:42] little crackle of electricity. Sometimes

[26:45] it's very easy because your eyes are so

[26:46] sensitive. It's very easy for the around

[26:48] the eyes to feel that crackle of

[26:50] electricity for the energy of your loved

[26:53] one. lots and lots of ways that this

[26:56] will happen. It will be different for

[26:57] you all and it's going to depend largely

[27:00] on your loved one because your loved one

[27:02] is individual their own personality,

[27:03] right? That they still have same

[27:05] personality. So what they do will make

[27:09] will make sense for them, right?

[27:18] Very clear. There's a lot of

[27:19] misunderstanding about what meditation

[27:21] is. And I know I'm just going to go back

[27:23] over this. There is a misnomer out there

[27:25] that medit meditation is emptying your

[27:27] mind of thoughts, right? Which is

[27:30] actually biologically impossible. So the

[27:32] only people I've ever come across who

[27:34] can actually empty their mind of

[27:36] thoughts are um you know uh monks, Zen

[27:41] monks, Buddhist monks that I've known

[27:43] who have been practicing for

[27:47] um um you know where after many decades

[27:51] of meditation they reach what's called a

[27:53] state of samadi which is complete um

[27:56] it's like it's like almost it sounds

[27:58] like a very very deep trans state where

[28:00] you're absolutely completely oblivious

[28:01] to anything. It's like being in a very

[28:03] deep state of sleep. That's not

[28:07] something that that's what 20 30 40

[28:10] years of meditation sitting in the

[28:13] Himalayas somewhere or whatnot or

[28:15] something similar. Well, you'll arrive

[28:16] at that point. That's not what

[28:17] meditation is for most people. And

[28:20] that's certainly not what it was even

[28:22] for those monks when they started out.

[28:24] So, it's not possible to empty your mind

[28:27] of thoughts. It is not possible to push

[28:30] a thought away.

[28:31] Because to push a thought away, you have

[28:34] to have the thought, let me push that

[28:36] thought away.

[28:38] You see? So, all you've done is replaced

[28:40] a thought with another thought. What

[28:42] we're not about is letting thoughts go

[28:45] just means

[28:47] return your focus to either the breath,

[28:50] to the light, the sensation, or whatever

[28:52] it is you've chosen as your single point

[28:56] of focus.

[28:58] So all we're doing is releasing whether

[29:01] or not the tomatoes are fresh down in

[29:03] Tesco's whichever whatever supermarket

[29:06] stop and shop or whatever and coming

[29:08] back to I'm here in this moment on this

[29:11] chair and I'm just breathing in and

[29:13] breathing out or I'm sitting within the

[29:16] light or whatever point of focus works

[29:18] for you. Right? You'll sit there. You'll

[29:20] bring your focus back to the breath.

[29:22] You'll probably hold it for about 5

[29:24] seconds and your mind will run off down

[29:26] the street again. Because that's the

[29:28] nature of the mind. And what we do, we

[29:30] recognize, we run off on a train of

[29:33] thought, and we release it. We just let

[29:36] go of the of the monkey mind or the

[29:39] little mouse on the wheel. We let it go

[29:41] and we just come back and we just bring

[29:43] our focus back to the breath.

[29:50] This is not that this is not anything

[29:52] that can be communicated in language.

[29:55] And so there's no possible way to

[29:58] convince anybody

[30:01] um that something is a sign because it's

[30:04] a very individual experience and it's

[30:06] only speaking to you in a way you will

[30:09] understand. So you know trying to you

[30:12] can't you know convince it's like you're

[30:14] trying to it's like anything in life

[30:16] you've got somebody who votes for the

[30:18] other guy you're never going to convince

[30:20] that person that guy is a shyer. You

[30:22] shouldn't be, you know, you'll never if

[30:24] they if that's who they believe in,

[30:25] that's who they're going to or girl or

[30:27] woman or man, whatever, that's who

[30:29] they're going to believe in. There's no,

[30:30] we know this. We've seen this all

[30:32] ourselves in the last few years. You

[30:34] know, we've seen it. People get

[30:36] entrenched ideas about all sorts of

[30:38] things. And when somebody has an

[30:40] entrenched idea, there's just no point

[30:43] in trying to convince them otherwise.

[30:46] Which is why I've I used to be a

[30:48] political correspondent and I never talk

[30:50] about politics anymore because it's

[30:52] time, you know. Um but um you know, so

[30:56] the thing is is that there really

[30:57] actually isn't and I would say, you

[31:00] know, these signs are precious and you

[31:03] want to protect them and you want to

[31:06] protect your relationship with your

[31:08] loved ones. So I'm inclined to So first

[31:11] of all, I never talk to anybody about

[31:13] these things, you know. Um to me coming

[31:18] to somebody who's bererieved um who has

[31:20] said I've seen a sign I've seen a heart

[31:24] on the stairs

[31:26] regardless of that other person's belief

[31:29] in whether it's your imagination or it's

[31:31] true or not tact and compassion

[31:36] dictates you let it be. You don't come

[31:40] to a grieving person who says oh I've

[31:42] seen something in the sky. I do believe

[31:44] it's my wife or son or mother or

[31:47] whatever and somebody go that's just

[31:49] ridiculous. I mean, that's a person to

[31:53] disengage from, a person at least to set

[31:55] a very firm boundary with where you

[31:57] don't share anything with them because

[31:59] that, if nothing else, that's just

[32:02] insensitive to a berieved person,

[32:05] right? Who would do that? If somebody

[32:07] came to you and said, um, you know, my

[32:10] my child has just died and I do believe

[32:12] I saw their toy on the floor and I do

[32:14] believe they put it there. I mean, in

[32:15] all honesty, would you come along and

[32:16] say, "Ah, that's nonsense." Mhm. You

[32:19] would if you don't even if you don't

[32:21] believe it, you would have the tact and

[32:23] the compassion to talk to them as a

[32:26] person who is in pain and suffering.

[32:28] I've not if nothing else. So um engaging

[32:32] with people

[32:34] don't get this. So I would say to that

[32:38] the best thing to do is just this is a

[32:41] relationship between you and your loved

[32:42] one. I mean, generally when your loved

[32:45] one was running around on their two

[32:46] feet, you didn't go up to complete

[32:47] strangers and say, "Oh, let me tell you

[32:49] about my relationship,

[32:52] right? So, why do it now?" I know you

[32:55] get excited, but the excitement is

[32:57] between you and your loved ones. So, be

[32:58] very careful about who you share with,

[33:02] very, very discerning in your sharing.

[33:04] Um, and you know, some people won't get

[33:07] it. I've got a lot of friends of mine.

[33:10] have kind of ended up over the years

[33:11] sort of becoming kind of much more

[33:13] distant from just just gravitate just

[33:15] grew apart because of this because they

[33:17] couldn't get their head around it and

[33:19] the fact that they couldn't get their

[33:20] head around it meant that they thought

[33:23] everything I was doing was delusional

[33:26] and for me it's not healthy to be in

[33:28] that and I do have some friends that I

[33:30] still are friends with um who don't

[33:32] believe we just don't talk about it ever

[33:35] but it just means it's this big gap in

[33:37] the conversation because it's I do this

[33:39] full-time time, you know. So, this

[33:43] happens. This changes. People will come

[33:45] into your life and other people will

[33:46] drift out of your life. This this

[33:48] generally happens when anybody has these

[33:51] kinds of relationships or when anybody

[33:52] has this kind of an awakening. So, I

[33:55] would just say be very careful careful

[33:57] of of oversharing or be careful of who

[34:00] you share with. People can undermine

[34:02] your confidence very easily. And a key

[34:04] part of this work that I've been trying

[34:05] to help you through practices with is to

[34:08] build that confidence, to build that

[34:10] sensitivity, to be able to move beyond

[34:13] seeing signs out there in the world

[34:15] because the relationship feels more

[34:17] strong more it feels stronger and it's

[34:20] far more intimate when you can actually

[34:23] move your attention inward

[34:27] to feeling their inward presence. That's

[34:29] why we've been doing these practices of

[34:31] the meditation and the power is to move

[34:33] the practice inward,

[34:36] you know, so that you don't have to

[34:38] always be looking around and then trying

[34:40] to interpret what you saw. And you know,

[34:42] they don't have to work so hard either,

[34:44] you know. And sometimes you just get

[34:46] this knowing which nobody can explain

[34:49] except you because you just knew it.

Karen Frances McCarthy says no. In her Q&A video she states that mediumship or afterlife communication does make a huge difference, but it does not remove the grief because the physical absence of the loved one remains. She urges people who are struggling to seek help from a grief counselor or support group.
McCarthy's view is that people don't get over grief; they learn to live differently with their new circumstances. She describes grief as a weight that can be carried in changing ways rather than a stage that ends. She also says the bond with the person who has died remains.
McCarthy notes that people who have lost a spouse often hear this and find it unhelpful, because the heart connection and the blending of spirit remain. She says not everyone who has lost a partner is looking to replace them, and that the comment misunderstands what grief involves.
McCarthy says kindness should not be done as a technique for communication. She says the acts are done for their own sake, though they can uplift the person doing them and, in her view, help with connection, since people who are kind become more aware and receptive.
McCarthy argues that people who have been most hurt can, once they allow themselves to grieve, offer the greatest service and connection to others who suffer. She describes this as finding odd gifts in dark moments, and says the most awakened people are often those who find a way to be of service.
McCarthy says we don't know the soul's path or what we and our loved ones chose, because we see from a limited worm's-eye view. She suggests the pieces may only fall into place after we return to the spirit world, so in the meantime we have to muddle along.
