Hypnotic Bedtime Story: How "The Cottage" Puts You to Sleep

À regarder · 7

You are on a sofa in a small cottage near the beach, a book open on your lap, and the narrator has just told you that your eyelids are heavy. Nothing in the room has changed. The walls are the color the narrator calls builder's beige, the television sits unused, and the windows have gone black. Then the story asks you to notice how slowly you are breathing, and by the time you think to check whether you are still reading, the words on the page have stopped making sense. That small, deliberate slide from ordinary attention into something softer is the whole engine of "The Cottage," the first chapter of an animated audiobook that Jody Whiteley uploaded to her Sleep Now channel in January 2018. Built as a bedtime mystery but working as a sleep hypnosis session, the video, which runs one hour and fifteen minutes, shows how a story can carry a listener's body toward sleep while keeping a thread of curiosity alive.

Lecture · 6 sections

What happens to the listener in the first ten minutes?

The opening does not announce that it is a hypnosis recording. It starts with a mystery. The narrator describes an advertisement for a cottage in Sarnia, Ontario that nobody else seems to find strange, a string of coincidences that lands you there, and dreams of the place you cannot quite remember. The hook is a puzzle, and a puzzle asks the mind to stay busy. That is the first craft decision worth noticing. A listener who is trying to track who is connected to whom, and why, is not spending energy on the day's worries.

Then the story moves into the body. Around the two-minute mark the narration places you on the sofa and begins describing it in physical terms: the cushions that "softly and securely" support your weight, a breath that "almost like a sigh" lets you sink deeper. Each suggestion is a small instruction disguised as description. By the time the narrator reaches the line that "every fiber of every muscle has released any and all tension," you have already been told how to breathe, where to feel heaviness, and what to do next. The story describes the relaxation it wants to produce, and the description does the work.

One detail matters a great deal here: the video never stops addressing you as "you." This second-person form is the scaffolding of the whole piece. Because the story keeps placing you inside the cottage, every sensation is yours, and every change in the scene happens to your own awareness. A listener cannot be a passive observer of someone else's sleep. They are being asked to take part in it.

How does the narration take you from the sofa into a dream?

The turn comes when the eyelids do. The narrator notes that your blinks are getting longer and then says, "you realize you are not really blinking your eyes are closed and you are just forcing them half open from time to time to convince yourself you are awake" (around 9:03 in the video). That line is a small piece of self-reference. The listener is caught in a moment of half-awareness and told, gently, that it is fine to stop checking. The narration then gives permission to let go: "allow yourself to drift off to sleep." The shift from effort to surrender happens in a sentence.

"You are floating down deeper deeper and even more deeply still in an infinite void where there is nothing but freedom." (narration, around 9:03 in the video)

Repetition does much of the work in this passage. "Deeper deeper and even more deeply still" is not elegant prose in the literary sense, but it is effective on the ear. The phrasing repeats, slows and carries the listener downward at the speed of a breath. The same device appears again and again through the hour. A reader of a page would find it a little heavy. A listener in a dark room, with the voice close and even, finds it a kind of pulse.

The narration then makes a more surprising move. It tells you that you feel "as if you have left your body behind comfortably snoozing on the couch" (around 10:14 in the video). The part of your mind that is still aware of the sofa and the body on it is kept in view, while the rest of you explores the void. This is the paradox at the center of the chapter, and the narrator states it outright: "you are in fact more fully conscious than you have ever been before" (around 12:18 in the video). The story asks the listener to feel both asleep and fully awake, and that tension is what keeps the attention anchored long enough for the body to follow.

Why does the soundscape matter so much?

Sound is the anchor that holds the descent together. The breath becomes "a soft soothing rushing sound," and the narration links it to the waves the character heard earlier at the beach. The text does this on purpose: the sound of your own breathing and the sound of the surf are presented as the same thing, so that an ordinary rhythm in the room becomes a memory of a place. When the narrator says, "this is how it must be while I am sleeping I just never remember it," the story turns the act of falling asleep into something the listener has been experiencing all along and simply did not notice.

For a listener, the practical effect is that a single repeated sound can carry the attention for minutes at a time. A story that moves only through images would keep demanding that the mind follow new scenes. A story that returns to one sound lets the mind settle. The visual layer then arrives on top of that stillness. The video description describes "live action, and animated shorts" meant to help the listener see the story, and the transcript's [Music] markers suggest the pauses where the screen carries more weight than the voice.

What does the well and the imagery do for the sleeper?

Around the thirteen-minute mark the imagery takes shape. The narrator says that when you give what you are looking at your full attention, "it all becomes more congruent and a scene forms below you" (around 13:19 in the video). The well you walked past earlier in the day now appears rebuilt, its rough stones forming a circle and a whirlpool of water that "may be glowing." This is a crucial piece of technique. The listener is not told to see anything in particular. They are told that attention will produce the image, and the image is then offered as the thing they were already looking at.

The images that follow move through a sequence that is worth tracking. A lonely street lamp, lacy frost, a road turning wet, impressive wrought iron gates, a figure standing in the dark. Each is a small, quiet scene rather than an action. Nothing demands a decision. The story keeps its pace even, so that the listener can drift from one image to the next without being pulled into a plot climax. Later, around the forty-minute mark, the narration has you "parting the trees in your backyard" and moving outward into the night, which is the most physical of the journeys in the chapter (around 40:57 in the video).

What is the lasting lesson for anyone who listens to bedtime audio?

What "The Cottage" shows is that a sleep recording can be built like a short piece of fiction. A mystery gives the mind something to hold. Second-person narration makes the listener the protagonist. Physical suggestion keeps the body in the frame. Repetition and an anchoring sound let the attention settle. Imagery that forms from attention lets the listener feel that the story is theirs. None of these tools is exotic. Their combination is what makes the hour work as a bedtime story and as a relaxation session at once.

The chapter also ends with a note of plain gratitude. Near the close the narration thanks the listener for staying, a reminder that the whole hour has been an exchange between a voice and a person trying to rest. The video's description promises that "many more chapters" will follow in the coming months, and the upload has logged 189,201 views as of this pull, which suggests that a good number of listeners have chosen to spend an hour with this particular cottage.

Where to go from here

If you want to try this kind of listening, start by watching the first ten minutes and noticing the moments when the narration tells you to breathe or to let your eyes close. Pay attention to how the mystery makes you stay awake and how the repeated phrases pull you down. The full chapter runs one hour and fifteen minutes, and it is designed to be heard in the dark, so you may find it works best if you don't watch to the end. The description suggests you can "watch till your eyes grow tired and then simply allow them to slide shut." That instruction, like the rest of the story, is meant to be followed rather than analyzed. Look for the next chapters on the Jody Whiteley Sleep Now channel, where the same technique is promised to continue.

[0:18] the amazing hypnotic bedtime story

[0:21] written by Jody Whitely chapter 1 the

[0:27] cottage ordinarily you wouldn't rent a

[0:32] cottage in an unlikely place like Sarnia

[0:35] Ontario Canada to stay here for a few

[0:38] weeks all by yourself but something

[0:41] unusual happened for several months

[0:46] before you arrived here when you engaged

[0:49] in any kind of social media you noticed

[0:53] an advertisement for this cottage it

[0:58] announced itself as outrageously

[1:02] inexpensive and just the right place for

[1:04] you you pointed this out to friends and

[1:08] family but not one of them seemed to

[1:11] think there was anything unusual about

[1:14] these ads and none of them thought going

[1:17] there was a good idea for them but every

[1:21] time one of your people did look at an

[1:23] ad they would dreamily say you should go

[1:31] often you had been waking up with vague

[1:35] recollections of dreams about yourself

[1:37] being at this cottage these were

[1:43] interesting dreams you wished you could

[1:45] remember more of

[1:47] [Music]

[1:49] a series of coincidental events led you

[1:54] to have two weeks off all to yourself

[1:57] without much to do so you clicked on the

[2:01] ad from this time forward everything

[2:07] kept falling into place automatically

[2:10] till you found yourself here where you

[2:13] are right now in this little cottage not

[2:17] far from the beach reading this book you

[2:23] are in the living room half sitting half

[2:26] lying on the sofa this is an extremely

[2:31] comfortable sofa and you enjoy how it

[2:34] feels beneath you

[2:36] as it softly and securely supports your

[2:39] weight

[2:44] you are relaxed every fiber of every

[2:50] muscle has released any and all tension

[2:54] gun loose and limp and has just let go

[3:01] you take a deep breath almost like a

[3:05] sigh and relax even more deeply sinking

[3:11] just a little bit deeper into the soft

[3:14] cushions because you feel more heavy

[3:17] when you completely relaxed you are

[3:25] joyfully thinking to yourself about how

[3:28] happy and relaxed you really are in this

[3:31] place how good that feels and what a

[3:35] good idea it is for you to be here

[3:46] the living room is the only room in the

[3:49] little house that could be considered

[3:52] large the floor is hardwood and the

[3:58] walls are painted the nondescript color

[4:01] usually referred to as builder's beige

[4:07] at the end of the sofa not too far from

[4:12] your feet is a modern flat-screen

[4:15] television with a desktop computer

[4:18] beside it left here for your use and

[4:21] enjoyment these courtesies have turned

[4:28] out to be a total waste of time because

[4:31] the internet access here is constantly

[4:35] interrupted and usually not working at

[4:39] all the same applies to the telephone in

[4:45] the house and your cell phone as well

[4:52] you met your neighbor Annabelle as you

[4:56] are bringing your things in earlier

[4:58] today she turned out to be a kindly

[5:02] silver-haired old widow who has been

[5:06] living in a house only a few yards from

[5:08] your cottage for many years she

[5:15] complained her house was much too big

[5:17] for her but letting it go would be the

[5:20] same as letting go of all the memories

[5:23] that contained and these were too

[5:26] precious for her to part with

[5:32] during your conversation that was

[5:35] briefed by Sarnia standards and

[5:38] unusually long compared to how much time

[5:41] people in other cities spent talking to

[5:44] strangers she mentioned the area was

[5:48] what was called a known problem area her

[5:52] cell phone coverage she also reported

[5:56] other tenants had complained of signal

[6:00] problems across a variety of devices

[6:03] guessing this was because the building

[6:06] was made of cement with a copper roof

[6:11] it's worse by the well she added not in

[6:15] knowingly about something you know

[6:18] little about yet the well is behind you

[6:25] behind the house and you can't see it

[6:29] right now because it is dark outside so

[6:32] dark outside you can see nothing outside

[6:36] of the windows they are all just black

[6:41] dimly reflecting the contents of each

[6:44] room

[6:50] part of your mind notices as you are

[6:53] reading this book how relaxed your

[6:55] breathing has become you are breathing

[7:01] deeply and evenly slowly and softly you

[7:12] become aware you are breathing the way

[7:14] someone would breathe if they were

[7:16] already deeply asleep

[7:20] [Music]

[7:24] you like the relaxed way the muscles in

[7:28] your abdomen feel as they gently rise

[7:31] and fall with each soft slow relaxing

[7:37] breath your entire body all at once

[7:44] feels heavy and relaxed but all the

[7:48] little muscles in your face feel even

[7:52] more so especially the ones around your

[7:55] eyes

[8:02] your eyelids feel heavy and each blink

[8:06] seems to take longer and longer till you

[8:11] realize you are not really blinking your

[8:15] eyes are closed and you are just forcing

[8:18] them half open from time to time to

[8:22] convince yourself you are awake and you

[8:25] feel so sleepy you are honestly not sure

[8:29] you are awake the words on the page are

[8:37] too difficult to focus on anymore so you

[8:40] put the book down close your eyes for

[8:43] good this time and allow yourself to

[8:47] drift off to sleep you can't tell if it

[8:58] is taking you a long time or a short

[9:00] time to fall asleep and it doesn't

[9:03] really matter because this feeling of

[9:06] falling asleep is so delicious you are

[9:10] happy to savor this time drifting gently

[9:14] down into the soft darkness

[9:21] you

[9:25] and you can feel yourself drifting down

[9:28] as a very distinct physical impression

[9:34] you're floating down deeper deeper and

[9:39] even more deeply still in an infinite

[9:43] void where there is nothing but freedom

[9:46] and this is a very pleasant feeling at

[9:53] first all is black yet you do not sense

[9:56] you are in darkness the black seems

[10:00] somehow bright and alive you cannot see

[10:07] your hands or your body but you also

[10:10] know this is not because of any darkness

[10:14] you feel as if you have left your body

[10:18] behind comfortably snoozing on the couch

[10:26] you are exploring an abyss where there

[10:30] is still a part of your mind aware of

[10:33] the body on the sofa but what you are

[10:37] experiencing is so wonderful

[10:40] you must go deeper into it and the

[10:43] deeper you go into the void the better

[10:46] it feels as you listen to your own

[10:51] breathing you are not sure if it is

[10:55] getting louder or it is just filling

[10:58] your awareness and the space around you

[11:01] more completely it is a soft soothing

[11:09] rushing sound reminiscent of the sound

[11:13] you heard earlier when you were at the

[11:15] beach having a few minutes of quiet time

[11:18] watching the gentle waves roll in and

[11:23] contemplating the pretty round pebbles

[11:25] and stones the water was pushing up to

[11:28] the shoreline to Sparkle pale blue

[11:31] taking on the same monochromatic quality

[11:36] of the scene around you

[11:41] what is memory moves into your present

[11:44] reality as this sound changes without

[11:48] changing and you are hearing the sound

[11:52] of waves breaking upon the shore and

[11:55] this is something you can hear from

[11:59] anywhere on the property outside of this

[12:02] cottage because this is how close you

[12:06] are to the beach right now you think to

[12:13] yourself this is how it must be while I

[12:16] am sleeping

[12:18] I just never remember it you are

[12:22] grateful and glad to experience what it

[12:26] is like to be asleep while you are fully

[12:28] awake you are in fact more fully

[12:33] conscious than you have ever been before

[12:36] you feel as if your consciousness is

[12:39] singing with a live energy as your body

[12:43] snoozes on a sofa that is right here and

[12:47] far away all at the same time

[12:53] soon you become aware of specks and

[12:57] swirls of color moving around you and

[13:00] these little anomalies grow and change

[13:03] to form images in the beginning you see

[13:10] very little that makes sense

[13:13] or has any meaning but as you focus and

[13:17] give what you are looking at your full

[13:19] attention without thinking about

[13:21] anything else

[13:23] it all becomes more congruent and a

[13:26] scene forms below you you recognize the

[13:34] well right away you have seen the ruins

[13:38] of it earlier today when you were

[13:41] exploring the land around your temporary

[13:44] home you even stood on the flat round

[13:49] patio stone in the center of it that had

[13:52] been placed upon the dirt used to fill

[13:55] it in for some reason you felt the need

[13:59] to raise your hands to the sky and

[14:02] proclaim to whatever deity you believe

[14:05] in or not or that is real or imagined

[14:09] that you had arrived then you may or may

[14:14] not have felt a little silly and hoped

[14:17] no one saw you do this and even if this

[14:22] did happen you would have been

[14:24] generating useless anxiety because no

[14:28] one could see you back there through so

[14:30] many trees

[14:36] the well is not a ruin now in your

[14:40] vision or dream

[14:41] it looks newly built the rough hewn

[14:46] square stones are forming a 10-foot

[14:50] circle level with the mossy ground

[14:52] around it and within this enclosure is a

[14:56] lazy whirlpool of water that may be

[14:59] glowing ever so slightly or perhaps it

[15:03] is just a trick of the dawn's early as

[15:06] delight there isn't any dirt or stones

[15:13] within the well yet from your time when

[15:16] it has been filled in but you already

[15:19] know this is about to change the Sun

[15:27] peeks over the horizon to send golden

[15:30] shards of light through the trees and

[15:32] you are able to make out what is

[15:36] happening around the well there is a man

[15:41] standing beside it dressed as a man

[15:44] would be over a hundred years ago if he

[15:48] is a farmer and not very wealthy his

[15:54] head is bowed as if he is very sad there

[15:59] is a similar man beside him with his

[16:02] hand on the sad man's shoulder backed up

[16:08] to the well are two rough horse-drawn

[16:12] carts loaded with dirt each cart has a

[16:17] man on it

[16:18] shoveling the dirt into the well

[16:25] you focus your attention on the sad man

[16:28] and his companion to hear more clearly

[16:31] what his friend is saying

[16:35] tis Satan's water Abe he says as he

[16:40] massages a sad shoulder to ease some

[16:43] obvious grief and disappointment it

[16:47] isn't right let us be done with it

[16:51] there's plenty of water in the lake but

[16:55] a few yards yonder there's no need for

[16:58] this foolish well surely she will

[17:02] understand and be still then all is

[17:07] quiet for a time safe for the sound of

[17:11] shovels digging into the dirt and

[17:13] pouring it into the well you rise up

[17:31] floating up gently to see your cottage

[17:35] is no longer there nor are the

[17:38] neighboring houses you feel a little

[17:42] butterfly sensation in your stomach as

[17:45] you float up higher above the treetops

[17:48] till you can see the lake nearby and the

[17:53] pastures bordering the woods far below

[17:55] you your view stretching out from the

[17:58] road to the lake up the shore to a

[18:01] distant point on one side and to a small

[18:05] town where the lake meets the river on

[18:08] the other you would like to move your

[18:14] awareness to the town to explore but

[18:18] when you push your mind in this

[18:20] direction

[18:21] it feels magnetically drawn back to the

[18:24] well and the sound of dirt being poured

[18:27] onto it each sound sounds more and more

[18:35] like white noise or soft

[18:38] and grows even louder taking up more

[18:42] space in your consciousness till this is

[18:45] all you can hear and this sound closes

[18:50] in around you and stays the same as it

[18:54] changes and fades growing more quiet and

[18:58] moving within you you realize this is

[19:03] again the sound of your own relaxed

[19:06] sleepy breathing the scene below you is

[19:12] melting giving way to darkness and you

[19:15] find yourself watching what you do see

[19:19] when your eyes are closed and you pay

[19:22] attention to what you see on the backs

[19:25] of your resting eyelids observing your

[19:31] breathing you notice it is making the

[19:34] smooth yet raspy sound it makes when

[19:37] your throat has become so relaxed it has

[19:41] narrowed causing the inhalations and

[19:44] exhalations to make a quiet relaxing

[19:49] sound this is the sound you usually hear

[19:58] just before you snore and as soon as you

[20:02] think about this you very gently snore

[20:06] and enjoy listening to this sound

[20:09] likening it to the sound of a deeply

[20:12] contented cat's her

[20:19] you are able to feel how your body feels

[20:23] when it is sleeping and this is a very

[20:26] pleasant feeling you deeply feel

[20:31] yourself from inside yourself and are

[20:34] observing yourself as if your

[20:37] consciousness is a separate entity from

[20:40] the sleeping person that you are

[20:45] dimly at first the objects in the room

[20:49] around you form in the darkness then

[20:51] become more defined as you easily pass

[20:55] an invisible barrier to be in the room

[20:58] you are in leaving yourself on the couch

[21:02] to rest for a time at first glance the

[21:09] living room is exactly the way you left

[21:12] it when you first nodded off but then

[21:15] you look at the book you've placed

[21:17] facedown on the white coffee table you

[21:20] find it very interesting because when

[21:24] you put the book down you had only read

[21:26] a couple of pages yet as it sits now it

[21:30] appears as if a quarter of the book has

[21:33] been read and the coffee table looks

[21:36] just a little bit more dusty than it did

[21:39] before

[21:43] you look at the big window at the back

[21:46] of the house and this window is not

[21:49] black anymore it is a little bit grey

[21:53] tinged with soft light this window is so

[22:02] big it takes up most of the wall in the

[22:05] living room and it looks out onto a Sun

[22:08] porch that has a translucent plastic

[22:11] roof and so many windows you might say

[22:15] it resembles a green house you can see

[22:21] the windows facing onto the backyard are

[22:24] glowing grey more brightly you open one

[22:29] of the two sets of French doors

[22:31] conveniently placed either side of the

[22:34] huge window to complete at the back

[22:37] livingroom wall you ease your head in to

[22:42] see Aude bits of furniture left there

[22:45] and all looks as it should be so you go

[22:49] through the room to the sliding glass

[22:52] doors to get a better view of what is

[22:55] happening outside from this window at

[23:00] the back of the Sun porch back patio

[23:03] small yard rickety fence overgrown

[23:07] bushes crumbling steps second round yard

[23:11] containing what is left of the well and

[23:14] woods beyond all seem permeated with a

[23:18] soft grey glow

[23:23] the glow is so subtle you stare out for

[23:27] a little bit of time wondering if you

[23:29] really are seeing something unusual or

[23:32] if it is just a trick of the moonlight

[23:38] you pull open one of the sliding doors

[23:42] inhale deeply through your nose and the

[23:45] air smells fresh earthy and inviting the

[23:53] air in the Sun porch

[23:54] suddenly feels overly warm and stale

[23:57] when compared to the cool fresh air you

[24:01] are breathing from outside so you step

[24:04] out onto the cement patio and look up to

[24:08] see if the light is coming from the sky

[24:11] but it is not it seems somewhat brighter

[24:17] by the well now and you take a few steps

[24:20] in that direction before you pause and

[24:24] listen to a gurgling sound coming from

[24:28] the well and as you listen the sounds

[24:31] form a pattern taking on a rhythm like

[24:35] music your feet do not move as you float

[24:42] towards and then over the source of this

[24:45] sound then you settle back down to stand

[24:49] at the edge of the well you look down

[24:54] into the water

[24:55] it is softly swirling where only dirt

[24:59] and stones once were or will be it is

[25:06] also beautiful in a hypnotic kind of way

[25:10] and you are drawn into the water in the

[25:14] well you enter without causing any kind

[25:20] of splash or disturbance and below the

[25:23] thin membrane of the surface it doesn't

[25:27] feel wet

[25:28] it doesn't feel like anything at all and

[25:32] you sink down into it gently and slowly

[25:37] sinking down below where it feels wet

[25:40] and into the airy space below above you

[25:48] you can see the water rotating and

[25:50] glowing yet around you feels just like

[25:53] empty air gently swaying the sway in

[26:00] that you reach out to feel the stones in

[26:03] front of you they are rough yet covered

[26:07] with a silky fine dust that enables your

[26:11] fingers to glide over them smoothly as

[26:14] you go deeper as you go deeper rough

[26:19] stones gives way to smooth white wall

[26:23] that sparkles just a little bit and this

[26:27] has its own soft glow

[26:34] the smooth crystalline rock feels warm

[26:37] and as you sink further down you feel

[26:41] pockets within it some vacant others

[26:45] holding round stones of various sizes

[26:52] you wonder how deeply you can go into

[26:55] the well and when you look down you see

[26:58] you can go deeper and deeper deeper and

[27:02] deeper deeper and deeper deeper and

[27:11] deeper and even more deeply still as

[27:15] this tunnel into the rock goes down much

[27:20] further into the ground

[27:24] floating down more softly slowing below

[27:34] you so far you see something that

[27:37] appears very small through a haze and

[27:40] even from so far away you can understand

[27:44] there are many round stones from the

[27:48] recesses in the walls that have fallen

[27:50] to the bottom of the well as you are

[27:59] reaching down towards them the air or

[28:02] water that feels like air around you

[28:06] grows warmer more moist then it feels as

[28:10] if it is pushing you upward like a

[28:13] breath and you rise up past the stones

[28:17] to the surface to gently Bob and float

[28:21] here in what feels like water around

[28:24] your neck and shoulders and what feels

[28:27] like a warm exhale to the bottom part of

[28:31] your body you hear something rustling in

[28:37] the undergrowth not far from where you

[28:39] are this could be a raccoon but it might

[28:44] be something bigger you continue to Bob

[28:48] and float for a moment feeling safer in

[28:52] the well as you try to decide if you

[28:55] should climb out and find out what it is

[28:58] stay in this warm semi-wet welcoming

[29:03] water or go back to the house in the

[29:09] rustling you think you hear a whisper

[29:11] that says

[29:16] you listen more closely and think you do

[29:20] hear this whisper come to you from the

[29:22] bushes saying and you trust this voice

[29:33] without really knowing why other than

[29:36] being in this well has filled you with a

[29:39] uniquely euphoric feeling you have never

[29:42] experienced before

[29:44] and you like what is happening so you do

[29:47] relax and lay back allowing your entire

[29:51] body to float up right the soft slow

[29:55] whirlpool as you look at the stars in

[29:58] the night sky you lazily muse about how

[30:08] it might be nicer if you could see more

[30:11] stars and perhaps you would but for the

[30:16] light that is always there in this area

[30:19] Tanjung the sky orange towards the

[30:22] southeast this is where the oil

[30:26] refineries and chemical plants that are

[30:29] Sarnia 'he's main industry lie and the

[30:32] giant Bunsen burners there never rest

[30:40] you are glad to be in the farthest

[30:43] northeast reaches of this small city

[30:46] inhabiting some of the most desirable

[30:49] real estate downwind of what ceaselessly

[30:53] works to reduce what we all use but

[30:56] would rather do away with you close your

[31:04] eyes and a thought manifests in your own

[31:07] mind that seems to come from somewhere

[31:10] else

[31:12] each time the thought softly speaks a

[31:16] soft light appears in the upper left

[31:20] corner of your field of vision and it

[31:23] says sky on fire dotted with stars I

[31:28] once knew as Sunnis and all as exactly

[31:33] as it should be

[31:38] you mumble to yourself all is exactly as

[31:43] it should be and for this time you

[31:46] believe this to be true

[31:50] the thought voice returns and tells you

[31:54] it is now time to go home and go to bed

[31:58] adding there is so much for you to do

[32:02] you will need your rest

[32:06] this comes with a feeling that is so

[32:09] kind and loving you trust it and feel

[32:13] perfectly safe and secure doing as it

[32:17] suggests you feel as if the water is

[32:24] assisting you as you climb out of the

[32:27] well without effort to rest for a moment

[32:30] on its mossy shore the bushes are quiet

[32:38] and still whatever was there before

[32:42] seems to be gone but you still feel as

[32:46] if someone is watching you as you walk

[32:49] back to the cottage oddly enough it

[32:53] feels more like being watched over cared

[32:57] for and protected than anything that

[33:00] might cause you concern in the living

[33:07] room you see your body is not on the

[33:10] couch anymore and you feel as if you are

[33:13] standing in it as one whole person your

[33:20] clothing is already dry and you wonder

[33:23] for a moment if you ever were really in

[33:26] the well at all or if you were dreaming

[33:29] or sleepwalking or both

[33:39] your book is on the clean and tidy table

[33:43] as it should be with only a few pages

[33:46] read you are tired and would like to go

[33:53] to sleep now

[33:54] so you go into the bedroom where you

[33:57] tried out the bed earlier and found it

[34:00] to be the most comfortable bed you have

[34:03] ever lied down on this bad felt so good

[34:10] at the time you were tempted to take a

[34:13] nap right then and there but were

[34:16] curious about your new surroundings and

[34:18] wanted to explore and a nap too late in

[34:23] the afternoon can give you insomnia so

[34:27] you put off enjoying the bed until later

[34:34] now you are grateful to climb between

[34:37] the crisp white sheets and this bed is

[34:41] so magnificently comfortable if you had

[34:45] any worry about unusual things

[34:48] it quickly slips away and you inhale

[34:54] deeply filling your nose with a barely

[34:58] perceptible yet intoxicating fragrance

[35:01] of some kind of perfume or laundry

[35:05] product you have never smelled before

[35:07] but you must admit as you keep breathing

[35:11] in deeply through your nose is somewhat

[35:15] addictive

[35:23] something about this smell is making you

[35:26] feel even better happier and more

[35:29] relaxed you breathe in so much of it you

[35:38] begin to feel light-headed

[35:39] so you slow your breathing down

[35:43] to a more steady relaxed rhythm gently

[35:47] sampling the delicious aroma with each

[35:50] soft breath the fresh cool feel of the

[36:00] sheets is in contrast to the slate

[36:03] stuffiness in the room around you all of

[36:08] the windows have been shut because

[36:11] during this time of year being late

[36:14] summer or early fall it can be quite

[36:17] cool outside sometimes as it was when

[36:21] you first arrived and it can become

[36:23] suddenly warm or even hot out in the

[36:27] space of a few minutes you consider

[36:34] opening one of the heavy old wood frame

[36:37] windows but that seems like too much

[36:40] work right now as you are resting so

[36:43] well and would like to rest more and

[36:47] more deeply so you close your eyes ready

[36:51] to rest more deeply into a long sound

[36:55] comfortable sleep you would like to

[37:01] experience again what happened moments

[37:04] before during your nap on the sofa and

[37:07] patiently wait for those kinds of

[37:10] feelings to come to you to pass the time

[37:18] you remember what it was like when you

[37:20] took a little bit of time earlier in the

[37:23] day to visit the beach you take yourself

[37:29] back to this time because it was so

[37:31] tranquil it might help you fall asleep

[37:37] you remember the sand as being soft and

[37:40] warm under your hands feet and behind

[37:44] the water is still and Placid unusually

[37:49] so for a body of water so vast this lake

[37:55] is big enough to be called an inland sea

[37:58] were it not freshwater and barely a

[38:02] ripple is disturbing the surface the Sun

[38:09] is softened behind a veil of smooth pale

[38:12] blue clouds tiny little lapping sounds

[38:19] and the occasional call of a distant

[38:22] seagull are the only things painted on

[38:25] the palpable silence and you listen to

[38:30] the silence between the sounds and

[38:34] behind the sounds till the silence

[38:37] deepens and you close your eyes to more

[38:43] acutely feel how it feels to be in the

[38:48] presence of this quality of serenity

[39:14] you

[39:23] behind your closed eyelids you imagine

[39:27] all the shades of soft muted blue

[39:31] blending together in a misty seascape

[39:35] that has no sharp edges or defined lines

[39:41] [Music]

[39:49] [Music]

[39:50] you rest into this memory

[39:54] and rest here more deeply till you

[39:59] notice the same feeling of higher

[40:02] awareness you experienced in the living

[40:05] room as visited itself upon you again

[40:08] and you feel to feel if you can feel

[40:14] your body becoming more fully relaxed as

[40:18] it drifts into a light and pleasant

[40:21] slumber so you can float away into

[40:25] nothingness to enjoy interesting dreams

[40:39] you dream of water and the lady next

[40:44] door but these images come to you with

[40:49] no real context or meaning you dream of

[40:54] bits and pieces of things like a wall

[40:57] parting the trees in your backyard and

[41:00] crawling through a tunnel dug deep into

[41:03] the earth

[41:07] then your dreams drift off into alien

[41:11] territory becoming much more abstract

[41:18] you dream of crystals that sing to you

[41:22] making the most beautiful music they

[41:25] [Music]

[41:36] form multi-dimensional shapes you

[41:40] wouldn't be able to properly perceive or

[41:44] understand while you are awake these

[41:49] bursts into being energy flowers that

[41:53] rain sparks to drift down and rest upon

[41:58] the ground glowing less and less

[42:02] brightly till they simply lie there as

[42:06] softly sparkling white gravel you drift

[42:18] in and out of consciousness often aware

[42:21] that you are dreaming as each little

[42:24] parcel of time drifts by

[42:37] your bed becomes more warm and your body

[42:42] feels more awake and alive

[42:52] you soon feel as if you have rested long

[42:56] enough and are refreshed energized and

[43:01] ready to do something fun

[43:18] you long to be outside in the fresh air

[43:24] you put on your most comfortable

[43:27] slippers and round the bend in the

[43:30] hallway opting to stop at the front door

[43:33] this time to find out what is happening

[43:36] in the front yard

[43:44] you open the heavy black wooden door and

[43:48] peer out into the semi-darkness

[43:58] you are welcomed by a knight bathed in

[44:01] pale blue moonlight the sky twinkles

[44:09] with a few bright stars and fireflies

[44:14] dance among the flowers

[44:40] there is a slight breeze smelling like

[44:43] the lake and this night is so lovely you

[44:48] must go out to spend some time in it you

[44:54] can hear the sound of waves rolling up

[44:57] on to the shore more loudly than you

[44:59] normally would

[45:10] the water here is as changeable as the

[45:13] weather it can be completely still one

[45:19] moment and then churn itself into

[45:24] rolling surf the next

[45:32] this night the sound is as if the

[45:35] largest of lumbering swells are turning

[45:39] themselves over to slam down onto the

[45:42] pebbles but line the shore each time a

[45:51] wave roars you hear a tinkling undertone

[45:55] that sounds almost like shattering glass

[45:59] but it's somewhat more musical in nature

[46:10] it is a short and pleasant two acre walk

[46:15] to the beach

[46:21] just across the narrow road as a path

[46:25] between two houses that are like all of

[46:29] the houses in this area larger than your

[46:32] own along this path you are kept company

[46:40] by a row of ancient gnarled maple trees

[46:53] there is another narrow road virtually

[46:57] devoid of traffic at any time of day and

[47:01] of course completely abandoned now

[47:05] except for yourself to cross to come to

[47:09] the gate and the white chain-link fence

[47:12] that is the same as the dilapidated

[47:14] white fence bordering your inner

[47:18] backyard and you are sure these fences

[47:22] were erected many years ago by someone

[47:27] who thought it might keep someone out

[47:31] but they do not so they are purely

[47:35] decorative but only if you are able to

[47:40] imagine things that are neglected

[47:44] abandoned shoddily built and useless

[47:49] decorative

[48:00] on the other side of the gate the trail

[48:03] widens for the last few yards to the

[48:05] beach and it goes between two houses

[48:10] that may be considered mansions by some

[48:16] these houses are majestically perched

[48:19] upon a gentle rise that slopes away down

[48:23] to the sand

[48:34] the Walker is calmer than the sound of

[48:37] the waves earlier suggested and the

[48:43] sound of surf fades away to silence as

[48:46] you approach the shore there is a warm

[48:53] wind coming off of the lake driving

[48:56] small swells and ripples towards you you

[49:03] kick off one slipper and sample the

[49:07] water with your toes it is warm almost

[49:13] bathtub warm a perfect temperature of

[49:20] warm inviting you to go in further you

[49:27] slip your foot out of your other slipper

[49:29] and wade in under an ever growing and

[49:33] more brightly glowing full moon now we

[49:43] both know you already know you are not

[49:48] supposed to swim alone at night

[49:52] but you still feel watched over cared

[49:56] for and completely safe and secure so

[49:59] you tell yourself you will not go in

[50:02] very deeply and continue

[50:16] the water swirls around your lower legs

[50:19] and delightful warm and cool Eddie's

[50:24] and this feels nice enough to lure you

[50:28] in further with your feet treading down

[50:31] onto soft sand with each step and you

[50:37] take each step slowly one step at a time

[50:43] then wait between each one to feel how

[50:48] the water feels when you step in just a

[50:52] little bit more deeply and the deeper

[50:57] you go into this water the better it

[51:01] feels as you move slowly downward with

[51:06] the water gently swelling around your

[51:09] hips and thighs

[51:24] the water has stilled to being as a vast

[51:28] sheet of glass

[51:32] and each step is making you feel lighter

[51:36] lifting you up before setting you down

[51:39] again to rest on the soft bottom all

[51:54] thoughts of caution have drifted away on

[51:58] the warm wind

[52:00] and you are calmly going in more deeply

[52:16] the water is up to your waist when you

[52:20] realize there is something different

[52:23] under one of your feet you move your

[52:29] toes over and around it to feel a round

[52:33] stone about the size of a softball

[52:44] it is perfectly smooth and very slippery

[52:56] as you move on you find another and

[53:00] another and as you continue in up to

[53:05] your chest

[53:06] these stones become more common till as

[53:10] you are going more deeply into the lake

[53:13] you are walking up through a pile of

[53:17] these round stones so slippery your feet

[53:21] become too confused to stay on task

[53:25] so you launch yourself forward using

[53:29] smooth strokes to glide across the

[53:32] surface of the glassy water feeling more

[53:35] buoyant than you normally would you swim

[53:43] out far away from the shore carried by a

[53:47] warm and gentle current that is

[53:50] gradually turning you around till the

[53:54] darkness you are swimming into becomes

[53:57] the dark outline of houses trees and the

[54:01] beach from this vantage point you can

[54:07] see the inky indigo nearly black water

[54:12] is glowing ever so slightly in a band

[54:16] just off the shore that matches where

[54:19] your feet first encountered the round

[54:22] stones

[54:30] this glowing effect is so barely

[54:33] perceptible it could just be a

[54:36] reflection of the moonlight or it could

[54:40] be something else so when you come to

[54:43] this place you slip under the water for

[54:46] a moment to retrieve a round stone to

[54:51] see if it glows you hold it in both

[54:58] hands as firmly as you can without

[55:01] causing it to slip away and use your

[55:07] legs to kick yourself past the last few

[55:11] feet to where you know you can stand

[55:14] more firmly

[55:26] holding the stone or up to the moonlight

[55:30] you carefully balance it on the palm of

[55:34] your right hand

[55:43] it feels like it likes to stay there and

[55:48] balances easily in spite of the fact it

[55:51] is so slippery and it is spinning it

[56:02] seems to be repelling your hand hovering

[56:05] micrometers above it as if riding on a

[56:09] magic field

[56:20] it's pearlescent surface shines and

[56:22] sparkles and it does glow ever so

[56:28] slightly

[56:37] your palm pleasantly tingles and you

[56:42] like how this feels so you keep this

[56:44] with you as you walk the last few feet

[56:47] out of the lake and onto the shore

[56:51] careful to keep your ball balancing on

[56:54] your right hand you become very aware of

[57:07] how weighted down you are by your wet

[57:10] clothing yet you feel refreshed and

[57:13] energized as well the sand you tiptoed

[57:25] so lightly over on the way here feels

[57:29] more heavy and harder to march through

[57:40] when you transfer the orb to your left

[57:43] hand the warm wind grows stronger as if

[57:48] helping you and pushing you along drying

[57:51] your clothes as you go

[57:59] you transition from sopping wet to just

[58:02] slightly damp quickly and you climb the

[58:07] hump on your way back to the house you

[58:12] summit the little hill and on top of it

[58:17] the air changes drastically from warm

[58:21] and windy to still and icy cold

[58:32] you can see your breath escaping you as

[58:35] clouds of steam

[58:47] you feel your clothing to feel it is now

[58:50] completely dry and your left palm is

[58:55] warm this warmth coming from the stone

[59:02] is now floating past your wrists and

[59:06] into your lower left arm

[59:18] your elbow warms up as does your upper

[59:21] left arm to your shoulder

[59:32] each joint this warm feeling flows

[59:35] through is being infused with a deeply

[59:40] pleasant warmth that radiates into every

[59:44] fiber of your connective tissues then

[59:47] flows out along your nerves filling them

[59:51] with feelings of pure pleasure and bliss

[59:59] this feeling now flows across your chest

[1:00:03] into your right arm up into your neck

[1:00:08] head and all of the little muscles bones

[1:00:13] and joints in your face

[1:00:27] you bow your head and close your eyes to

[1:00:33] focus on feeling this wonderful tingling

[1:00:37] warmth flowing down into your abdomen

[1:00:41] and down your back to pull into the bony

[1:00:47] basket of your pelvis it is flowing past

[1:01:01] your hips thighs into your knees down

[1:01:06] your calf muscles and bones to your

[1:01:08] ankles feet big toes and each and every

[1:01:15] smaller toe you are warm

[1:01:27] side and by contrast the sharp cold air

[1:01:32] feels deliciously clean and refreshing

[1:01:36] on your skin when you open your eyes you

[1:01:51] see the trees and undergrowth have taken

[1:01:55] on a heavy layer of frost and you are

[1:02:00] walking down through a sparkling frozen

[1:02:03] mist that lights up the area of your

[1:02:07] stone helping you see your way through

[1:02:10] the darkness and stay on the path to the

[1:02:14] gate the gate is frozen closed obscured

[1:02:26] by layer upon layer of icicles in a

[1:02:29] thick mass covering the entire fence

[1:02:40] in slow motion you sit down floating

[1:02:46] down onto a soft pillow of thick mist to

[1:02:50] study this phenomena

[1:02:52] more closely the light from the sphere

[1:03:01] points rays that reach out to the

[1:03:03] icicles each one finding its own home to

[1:03:08] flicker and reveal itself in the ice to

[1:03:11] be a separate scene being played out in

[1:03:14] each individual ice capsule you focus

[1:03:26] your attention closely on the larger

[1:03:29] ones in front of you you see a distorted

[1:03:40] and somewhat blurry image of yourself

[1:03:44] standing in the driveway of the cottage

[1:03:50] there are half a dozen people with you

[1:03:54] but you can't make out very many details

[1:03:58] about who they are save one you think

[1:04:01] might be Annabelle

[1:04:14] you can tell she and three of the others

[1:04:18] are female and two are male they are all

[1:04:31] silver haired and wearing a grey uniform

[1:04:35] that resembles surgical scrubs or

[1:04:39] perhaps pajamas you are hugging these

[1:04:53] people with each taking their turn and

[1:04:57] as you observe the body language of all

[1:05:01] involved you can discern you are all

[1:05:04] very happy

[1:05:14] you get into your car and pull out of

[1:05:17] the driveway and drive away as your

[1:05:22] friends wave goodbye to you through

[1:05:30] another icicle you see a long empty

[1:05:33] hallway with red carpeting white walls

[1:05:37] and black doors on either side

[1:05:51] the third one reveals a great wildfire

[1:05:54] burning over the crest of the hill in a

[1:05:58] distant city located somewhere with a

[1:06:01] more tropical climate

[1:06:13] the fire swirls high into the sky coming

[1:06:17] towards you as you go towards it till it

[1:06:20] fills the entire icicle and through the

[1:06:24] flames vague images of buildings and

[1:06:27] other cities form then dissipate and

[1:06:30] disappear into the flames all together

[1:06:44] this icicle is beginning to melt giving

[1:06:48] way to the flames your face is so close

[1:06:58] it is almost touching and starting to

[1:07:02] feel a little too warm so you pull back

[1:07:06] to watch as the fire consumes the ice

[1:07:10] spreading out from the gate along the

[1:07:13] fence line

[1:07:27] your stone catches your attention by

[1:07:30] vibrating and you look down to see it

[1:07:34] has turned into a clear bubble of ice

[1:07:37] with lacy patterns of frost waltzing

[1:07:41] across its surface your cool skin

[1:07:52] gratefully absorbs the warmth of the ice

[1:07:55] fire and you watch the frost pattern

[1:08:00] swirl and vibrate more quickly then in

[1:08:04] an instant the bubble pops and is gone

[1:08:08] leaving you with only a few specks of

[1:08:11] slightly glowing water on your left hand

[1:08:14] that very quickly evaporate the fire ice

[1:08:21] and frost are all gone now and you are

[1:08:25] sitting on ordinary ground in front of

[1:08:29] the gate with all being as it normally

[1:08:32] would be on the little paths between the

[1:08:36] two houses

[1:08:46] through the gate you cross the first

[1:08:48] little road where there is sun light

[1:08:51] from a lonely street lamp

[1:08:53] oddly looking like a flying saucer on a

[1:08:57] pole with a light bulb in it across the

[1:09:04] road on the path through the last acre

[1:09:06] where the woods are somewhat thicker you

[1:09:10] walk into total darkness and stop you

[1:09:24] are not sure if you should continue or

[1:09:28] go back to the road that winds around to

[1:09:32] be the road that goes in front of your

[1:09:35] house if you follow it long enough

[1:09:48] something rustles in the bushes and you

[1:09:51] back up to be on the road

[1:10:03] to the left is a dead end that isn't

[1:10:06] really a dead end but the beginning of

[1:10:10] someone's driveway that goes to a house

[1:10:13] that cannot be seen but judging from the

[1:10:18] impressive wrought iron gates blocking

[1:10:20] this way it must be a true mansion

[1:10:34] you would like to find a way through or

[1:10:37] around these gates to explore what is

[1:10:41] beyond the driveway that wins out of

[1:10:44] sight and into the trees but you are

[1:10:49] starting to feel tired again and a fine

[1:10:54] mist of light rain is dampening your

[1:10:58] face and tickling your nostrils each

[1:11:03] time you breathe in so you take the

[1:11:07] right way and follow the smoothly

[1:11:11] flowing road this way and that between

[1:11:15] houses that can be seen and not seen

[1:11:28] each Bend leaves behind another

[1:11:31] streetlight only to give you a new UFO

[1:11:35] to light your way for the next part of

[1:11:38] your journey the road soon becomes wet

[1:11:53] and your path is sparkling reflecting

[1:11:57] the light from each streetlight on its

[1:12:01] slick black surface

[1:12:12] on the way to your front door you see

[1:12:15] the sky is taking on a pinkish quality

[1:12:17] that is foretelling of the early dawn

[1:12:28] one last pink star winks out of sight as

[1:12:33] you take hold of the doorknob feeling

[1:12:36] ever so weary and ready to go back to

[1:12:40] bed to catch what you hope will be a few

[1:12:44] more hours sleep before exploring your

[1:12:47] new surroundings later on in the day

[1:13:03] in the bedroom closet you find a set of

[1:13:06] clean white flannel pajamas hung on an

[1:13:10] old-fashioned wooden hanger and covered

[1:13:14] in plastic as if they had come from the

[1:13:17] dry cleaners you remove the plastic and

[1:13:27] are happy to smell they smell the same

[1:13:30] as your bedding and you eagerly remove

[1:13:35] your damp clothes to slip into your

[1:13:38] pajamas to feel the heavenly soft dry

[1:13:42] flannel warming your cool skin

[1:13:51] you dive into bed with so much force you

[1:13:55] bounce on the springs a few times before

[1:13:58] the bed is still and your consciousness

[1:14:02] drains away spinning slowly down into a

[1:14:06] beautiful darkness and oblivion that

[1:14:10] lasts for several hours leaving you in

[1:14:13] perfect peace till you are woken up by

[1:14:17] the sound of birdsong early in the

[1:14:20] afternoon end of chapter 1 thank you so

[1:14:36] much for listening

[1:14:46] you

The Cottage is the first chapter of an illustrated audiobook by Jody Whiteley, set in a rented cottage near a beach in Sarnia, Ontario. The narrator, speaking directly to the listener as "you," builds a mystery about the cottage, the neighbor, and a rebuilt well, while guiding the body toward sleep. The video runs one hour and fifteen minutes.
In this video the narration combines physical suggestions, such as heavy eyelids and slow breathing, with repeated phrases that carry the listener deeper. A mystery keeps the mind lightly occupied while the body is told to let go. The description says the audio is meant to help you relax very deeply and be entertained while you drift off.
Addressing the listener as "you" places them inside the cottage, so every sensation and change in the scene happens to their own awareness. It keeps the listener an active participant rather than a passive observer. This is the structural basis for the hypnotic effect in the chapter.
The narration tells the listener they are "in fact more fully conscious than you have ever been before" while the body sleeps on the sofa. The story presents this as a way to experience sleep directly, noting that it is how it must be while sleeping but never remembered. That tension keeps attention anchored while the rest of the body relaxes.
The video is labeled Chapter 1, and its description states that "many more chapters" are coming in the following months. The chapter is part of an ongoing animated audiobook series on the Jody Whiteley Sleep Now channel. The upload was published on January 14, 2018.
The full video is one hour and fifteen minutes long. The description suggests you can watch until your eyes grow tired and then let them slide shut while you listen to the audio. The story is designed to be followed by ear as much as by sight.
