Harp, Bansuri and Fretless Guitar at Denver's Enchanted Garden

On a July evening in Denver, Colorado, the Enchanted Garden Concert became a small room of sound: a harp, a bamboo flute, a voice and a guitar with no frets, playing into the open air. The performance, by Sheela Bringi and Elden Kelly, was filmed by Douglas Bry and posted to Bringi's channel with a short description of the lineup. The clip runs just under three minutes, and it is a fragment rather than a finished document. That is worth saying plainly up front, because the most useful thing a reader can do with it is listen closely to the instruments and understand why this combination is unusual.

Lecture · 4 sections

What is actually in this performance?

The description lists the instruments with care, and each one changes what the listener hears. Bringi plays harp, bansuri, harmonium and sings. Kelly plays a fretted/fretless guitar built by Magic Fret, and a 12-string KLOS guitar. The hashtag #RagaHarp suggests the set sits within a raga-based approach, though the clip itself does not spell out its structure, so treat that as a clue rather than a confirmed frame.

The bansuri is a transverse bamboo flute from the Indian classical tradition. Its breath-driven tone bends easily between notes, which is why it is so central to melodic improvisation. The harmonium, a hand-pumped reed instrument, is traditionally the sustaining layer beneath voice and melody, offering a steady drone that holds a room together. A harp adds a different kind of sustain: plucked strings that ring and fade, leaving space between attacks. Put these together with a voice and you get a palette that moves from breath to plucked resonance without a drum in sight.

Why does a fretless guitar matter in this setting?

A fretted guitar sits pitch in fixed places. A fretless instrument does not. The player's finger decides exactly where the note lands, and a slide or bend can pass through the spaces between the notes that a fretted neck would skip. That freedom is the reason fretless playing sits so comfortably beside the bansuri and voice, both of which shape pitch continuously rather than in steps. The guitar here is not carrying a chord pattern alone; it is working in the same pitch-space the flute and voice inhabit.

The 12-string KLOS guitar adds a second color. Twelve strings, paired in courses, produce a shimmer and a doubled resonance. The clip does not let the listener isolate each instrument, so the exact role of each guitar in each passage remains a question the video leaves open.

What does the short clip reveal, and what doesn't it?

The timestamped transcript is mostly tagged as music, with a few sung fragments breaking through. At the start, instrumental texture carries the first 15 seconds before a sung phrase enters around the 19-second mark. Around 56 seconds, a single spoken word surfaces through the music. Near the 107-second mark a sung line begins, and the closing stretch returns to instruments alone. None of these fragments is complete enough to quote, and the video offers no spoken introduction, no program notes and no interview. What it offers is a performance under a summer sky, filmed simply, with credits.

That restraint is itself informative. Live garden sets often depend on atmosphere, and this clip lets the instruments speak for themselves. A listener who wants more context should follow the artists directly rather than build a story from a few seconds of partial lyric.

Where to go from here

If this clip caught your ear, the most reliable next step is the artists' own channels. Sheela Bringi's site is sheelabringi.com, with Instagram at @shebrings. Elden Kelly's site is eldenkelly.com, with Instagram at @eldenkellymusic. Listen for the harp and bansuri against the fretless guitar, notice where the voice enters, and pay attention to how the drone-like harmonium and sustained strings hold the space between phrases. That is where the real craft of this combination lives.

Questions fréquemment posées

Sheela Bringi plays harp, bansuri, harmonium and sings, while Elden Kelly plays a fretted/fretless guitar by Magic Fret and a 12-string KLOS guitar. The performance was part of the Enchanted Garden Concert in Denver, Colorado, in July 2026.
The bansuri is a transverse bamboo flute from the Indian classical tradition. Its breath-driven tone bends easily between notes, which makes it well suited to the melodic movement that raga-based playing depends on.
A fretless guitar has no fixed frets, so the player determines the exact pitch with the finger and can slide or bend through the spaces between notes. That makes it a natural partner for voice and bansuri, which also shape pitch continuously.
The harmonium is a hand-pumped reed instrument that is traditionally used to sustain a steady drone beneath voice and melody. In this performance it is one of the instruments Sheela Bringi plays alongside harp and bansuri.
Sheela Bringi's website is sheelabringi.com with Instagram @shebrings, and Elden Kelly's website is eldenkelly.com with Instagram @eldenkellymusic. The short Enchanted Garden clip was filmed by Douglas Bry and is the only detail the source video provides beyond the credits.
