Gnawa Percussion in Motion: Dohola, Guembri and Shekere

K
Kabeção
Oct 7, 2026
3 min de lecture

A 70-second clip with almost no spoken words, just a player working hand percussion and string instruments under a steady pulse, and a description that names the people who made the instruments before it names anything else. That is the whole of this Short from Kabeção, and it makes one clear argument: the sound of the music starts in the object. The description thanks the makers by handle, crediting the Gnawa Brothers, Shekere Otomo, Emin Percussion and Leiva Percussion, and tags the instruments involved: dohola, guembri, cajón, shekere and gnawa.

Lecture · 2 sections

What does the credit to instrument makers tell us about the music?

The clip's only words are two cues: "Down." at the opening, and "Heat. Heat." around the 29-second mark. Everything else is music. Those cues are never explained, and nothing in the frame or the audio spells out what they direct, so any reading of them would be guesswork. What the video does establish is its priorities. The first line of the description is about the builders, not the performer.

That choice has real grounding. In gnawa practice, the guembri is a three-string lute with a wooden body, played as a bass-register anchor for the group, and the shekere is a gourd rattle netted with beads. Their tone depends heavily on materials and construction: the thickness of the gourd, the density of the bead net, the tension of the strings. A player's technique can only draw out what the maker built in. The cajón, a box drum traditionally associated with Peru and played seated, follows the same logic, since the wood and the snare and tone of its construction shape every stroke. (This background is general context about these instruments, not something the clip itself states.)

Listen to the Short with that in mind. The low, round pulse of the bass-register instrument, the dry rattle of the shekere, and the sharper knock of the box drum each carry a different job in the groove, and the shifts in texture across the 70 seconds are where the playing lives. Crediting the makers is a reminder that those textures were engineered long before the first note was played.

Where to go from here

For the fuller picture, start with the makers named in the description; their own accounts show the instruments in the workshop, which is the context this clip leaves out. Then look for longer teaching from Kabeção on the channel to hear how the player builds a set. The Short is a brief, wordless introduction to an instrument family, and the credit line is the most useful thing it says.

Questions fréquemment posées

The description tags dohola, guembri, cajón and shekere, and credits gnawa as the tradition. The clip itself contains almost no spoken explanation, so the instrument identities come from the description tags rather than from anything said on screen.
The guembri is a three-string lute with a wooden body, used in gnawa music and typically played as a low, bass-register anchor for the group. Its sound depends heavily on how it is built, which is why its makers matter to the performance.
No. The only spoken words in the 70-second clip are 'Down.' at the opening and 'Heat. Heat.' around the 29-second mark, with no explanation given. Any interpretation of those cues would be speculation.
