The full moon has long held a place in spiritual practice as a night of amplified energy and heightened consciousness. According to the wisdom shared at Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville, it is said that a full moon amplifies one's mental state, making it an ideal time for mantra practice. Chanting mantras on such nights becomes not merely a personal discipline but a vehicle for channeling that lunar energy toward inner calm and global healing. This Full Moon Chanting Session, led through the recorded voice of Shri Guru Swami Satchidananda, demonstrates how two of the oldest Sanskrit mantras—the Gayatri and the Mahamarityon Jaya—work together to guide practitioners from the surface turbulence of daily thought toward the still center where wisdom dwells.

What Is the Gayatri Mantra?

The Gayatri Mantra is described as a universal prayer known as the mother of all hymns in the ancient Vedic scriptures. Its meaning carries profound cosmological weight: "I meditate on that great bright light that illuminates the three worlds. May He enlighten me too." This is not merely poetic language—it is a direct invocation of illumination across all dimensions of existence.

Repeating the Gayatri mantra brings harmony to all levels of our existence: physical, mental, and spiritual. The practice purifies thoughts, words, and actions, working not on the intellect alone but on the very fabric of one's being. Over time, the mantra is said to lead one toward the experience of the light of wisdom and ultimate liberation—a journey that begins with the discipline of repetition and unfolds into direct insight.

The Mahamarityon Jaya: Heart of the Vedas

Alongside the Gayatri stands the Mahamarityon Jaya mantra, which translates as: "We worship You, the All-Knowing. O possessor of fragrance, you nourish us with generosity, free us from the fear of death so that we may realize eternity." The wise men praise this mantra as the heart of the Vedas, and its position in the meditation tradition is considered second only to the Gayatri itself.

The Mahamarityon Jaya mantra helps one connect with the healing power within. Repeating this mantra supports spiritual growth and protects us in times of hardship by directly addressing one of the deepest human fears—the fear of death. By freeing us from that primal fear, the mantra opens space for us to remember our highest goals in life and the eternal nature of consciousness itself.

The Formula of 108: A Blessed Number

At the heart of this practice lies a carefully calibrated structure: Shri Guru Swami Satchidananda gave the formula to repeat three-quarters of a mala from the Gayatri (81 repetitions) and one-quarter mala from the Mahamarityon Jaya (27 repetitions), which amounts to the blessed number 108. This number carries significance across many spiritual traditions—it represents wholeness, cosmic unity, and the bridge between the finite and infinite. By combining the two mantras in this ratio, the practice creates a complete arc of spiritual work: first establishing harmony across all levels of existence through the Gayatri, then deepening into the fearless wisdom of liberation through the Mahamarityon Jaya.

How Mantra Chanting Transforms Consciousness

By repeating both mantras with a pure heart and a focused mind, practitioners experience more than inner peace—they become vehicles for radiating that peace to the whole world. This is not a metaphorical claim in the Vedic understanding but a direct statement of how vibration and consciousness interact. The mantra is not separate from its meaning; the sound itself carries the frequency of what it invokes.

The session begins with chanting the sacred mantra Om three times together, establishing a unified field of intention. This is followed by the Lotus Prayer, given by Shri Guru at the dedication of the Lotus Temple, which explicitly invokes the unity underlying all forms of worship: "Help us to understand you alone through these diverse images and names, and through all these different ways and methods of worship. Help us to recognize the essential unity." Only then do practitioners join in repeating the mantras 108 times, their voices joining the chorus of countless seekers across centuries who have turned to these same words for guidance, healing, and awakening.

The Lotus Prayer: Invocation of Universal Light

The prayer that frames the mantra session carries its own teaching. It addresses the Lord as the "Light of Lights," the inhabitant of the entire universe, and asks explicitly for the removal of "the darkness of ignorance." The prayer's genius lies in its recognition that the same light that makes the sun rise, the moon shine, and the stars twinkle is also the light of awareness within each conscious being. To see that light is to recognize it "everywhere and in everything, or to be more precise, is everything."

The prayer then pivots toward the social and ethical dimensions of this recognition. It asks for strength not merely to experience inner peace but to share it with everyone. It names the roots of conflict directly—"selfish temptations with which we create all the disagreements, all the conflicts, and all the wars"—and frames spiritual practice not as escape from the world but as preparation to serve it with wisdom and compassion.

Full Moon Practice as a Gateway

Why gather on the full moon specifically? The tradition holds that the full moon's energy amplifies the mind's natural tendencies. For those seeking calm, clarity, and connection, the full moon becomes a powerful ally. The ashram invites practitioners to join monthly on this blessed night—whether by participating in recorded sessions or by visiting Yogaville in person to chant in the presence of the community. In either case, the individual practice becomes part of a larger rhythm, aligned with the celestial cycles that have guided human spiritual life since before the Vedas were written.

Where to go from here

If this teaching resonates, consider establishing your own full moon practice. You need not wait for the ashram's schedule; the mantras themselves are universal tools. Begin with even a few repetitions of the Gayatri Mantra, spoken slowly with attention to the meaning. Let the Sanskrit syllables carry your intention toward that "great bright light." If you are drawn to deeper study, Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville welcomes visitors and offers ongoing classes, retreats, and community gatherings throughout the year. The ashram exists to support exactly this work—the transformation of individual consciousness in service to world peace. Learn more at yogaville.org.

[0:01] Om, welcome to the

[0:03] Full Moon Night Chanting Session at

[0:05] Sachidananda Ujavel Ashram.

[0:08] It is said that a full moon

[0:10] amplifies one's mental state.

[0:14] Chanting mantras is an

[0:16] excellent way to calm

[0:18] the mind, guide it towards

[0:19] inner peace, and spread

[0:21] that peace throughout the world.

[0:24] We will recite two

[0:26] Sanskrit mantras

[0:28] . Gayatri Mantra

[0:30] and Mahamrity

[0:32] Jaya Mantra. The Gayatri mantra translates

[0:35] into Arabic

[0:37] as: I meditate on that

[0:41] great bright light

[0:43] that illuminates the

[0:44] three worlds. May He enlighten me

[0:47] too. Gayatri mantra is a

[0:51] universal prayer

[0:53] known as the mother of all hymns

[0:55] in the

[0:56] ancient Vedic scriptures.

[1:00] Repeating the Gayatri mantra

[1:02] brings harmony to all

[1:04] levels of our existence:

[1:05] physical, mental,

[1:07] and spiritual. It purifies

[1:10] our thoughts, words, and

[1:11] actions. Gayatri mantra leads

[1:16] one towards

[1:17] the experience of the light of wisdom and

[1:19] ultimate liberation. The

[1:24] mantra

[1:25] Mahamarityon Jaya translates into

[1:27] Arabic as: We

[1:28] worship You, the All-Knowing

[1:30] . O possessor of fragrance,

[1:34] you nourish us with generosity,

[1:36] free us from the fear of

[1:38] death so that we may realize eternity.

[1:44] Besides the

[1:46] Gayatri mantra, the Mahamarityon Jaya mantra occupies a

[1:49] high position among the

[1:50] mantras used

[1:52] for meditation.

[1:56] The wise men praise it as the heart of the Vedas. The

[1:59] mantra

[2:00] Mahamarityon Jaya helps

[2:01] one connect with the

[2:03] healing power

[2:05] within. Repeating

[2:08] this mantra supports

[2:10] spiritual growth and protects us in

[2:11] times of hardship. This

[2:15] powerful mantra works to

[2:17] free us from the fear of

[2:18] death and remind us of

[2:20] our highest goals in life.

[2:25] By repeating both

[2:27] mantras with a pure heart

[2:29] and a focused mind, we not

[2:30] only experience inner peace,

[2:32] but radiate this peace

[2:34] to the whole world.

[2:39] Both mantras will be displayed on

[2:41] the screen so you can

[2:43] follow along, or you can

[2:44] close your eyes and repeat

[2:46] if you already know them by heart

[2:48] . The

[2:52] recorded voice of Shri Guru

[2:53] Swami Sachidananda will be

[2:55] leading the mantra. He

[2:59] gave us the formula

[3:01] to repeat three-quarters of a

[3:03] mala from Gayatri (81

[3:06] repetitions) and one-quarter mala

[3:08] from Mahamrityon Jaya (

[3:10] 27 repetitions), which amounts

[3:13] to the blessed number 108.

[3:22] We will begin by chanting the

[3:23] sacred mantra Om

[3:25] three times together,

[3:26] followed by reading the

[3:28] Lotus Prayer given by Shri

[3:30] Guru at the dedication of

[3:32] this Lotus Temple. Then please

[3:38] join us in

[3:40] repeating the mantra 108

[3:41] times, and conclude the session with

[3:43] prayers for

[3:45] world peace. Please assume a

[3:49] comfortable sitting position. Let's

[3:51] begin. Oh. Oh. Oh.

[4:36] O Lord, Light of

[4:38] Lights. You are the inhabitant

[4:40] of the entire universe. You are the

[4:43] light of awareness. You are the light of

[4:46] our understanding. You are the one who

[4:48] illuminates everything and everyone.

[4:52] You are the one who makes the sun

[4:54] rise, the moon shine,

[4:56] the stars twinkle, and the fire

[4:57] blaze. Guide us

[5:00] gently to that light of wisdom

[5:02] , and remove the darkness of ignorance

[5:04] . Enlighten our hearts. Help us

[5:08] to experience that light, both

[5:09] inside and out.

[5:11] Help us to see the

[5:13] same light, the same spirit

[5:15] that dwells everywhere and

[5:16] in everything, or to be

[5:18] more precise, is everything.

[5:20] Help us to understand you

[5:22] alone through these

[5:25] diverse images and names, and through all

[5:26] these different ways and methods of

[5:28] worship.

[5:30] Help us to recognize the

[5:32] essential unity. Help us

[5:34] realize that we are your image and your children

[5:35] , regardless of

[5:37] the differences. Let us

[5:39] contemplate your spirit as it flows through

[5:41] everyone. Give us the

[5:44] strength, courage, and

[5:45] ability to experience

[5:47] that peace and joy

[5:48] within, and to share it with

[5:50] everyone. Help us to

[5:52] stay away from these

[5:54] selfish temptations with which we create

[5:56] all the disagreements, all the

[5:58] conflicts, and all the wars. We have

[6:01] suffered enough

[6:02] because of our ignorance. Please

[6:04] guide us to get to know our brothers and

[6:06] sisters, and to know that we are

[6:08] all parts of

[6:09] your family. Light our way.

[6:12] O Light of Lights, O Lord of

[6:14] Lords. Help us.

[6:16] Guide us. Om Shant,
