Five Hidden Factors That Shape Your Mind, From Food to Place

Picture a morning when nothing is wrong on paper. You ate well, your digestion is settled, your routine is intact, and yet your thoughts start running in tight circles and you cannot say why. In a two-minute clip posted to his YouTube channel, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar starts from exactly that puzzle. He names five things he says affect the mind: food, time, company, wisdom, and place. Food and the body come first, then the rhythm of days and the larger movement of the cosmos, then the people you spend time with, then the depth of your understanding. The clip is brief and ends mid-sentence, so it works less as a finished doctrine than as a compact map of where a restless mind may be getting its weather from.

Why does a balanced diet still leave the mind unsettled?

The first factor is the easiest to dismiss and the hardest to ignore. "Number one, food," he says at the top of the clip. "Food has effect on your mind." He is specific about what he means. Eating at the wrong time counts. So does food that is not well digested, food that is the wrong kind for you, and food that is stale. Each of these, in his telling, reaches the mind, not just the stomach.

What makes this more than a diet tip is the way he frames it. He sets up the scenario carefully: you are "taking care of your diet," you are eating good food, and "your digestion system is okay." Food is not the only variable he identifies, and that is the point. Even when the first factor is handled well, something else can still act on you. The sequence he lays out suggests that food is the foundation a person can most directly control, and that a clear mind starts with a body that is not being quietly strained.

Can the movement of stars and the rhythm of days change how you feel?

The second factor is where the talk turns from the kitchen to the sky. "The next thing is time," he says, and then he describes a moment that will be familiar to anyone who has lived through a sudden low. "Suddenly some time gets you. It makes your mind go in circles." He attributes this to something larger than personal habit: "This is the impact of the cosmos, the impact of movement of stars, whatever that is."

Notice the phrasing. He does not claim a precise mechanism, and he does not ask the listener to accept one. He offers an observation about lived experience: moods can shift in ways that do not map neatly onto what you did that day. He also describes the shape of the shift. "Different times you feel happy or unhappy suddenly," he says, and then, after "two and half day, three days, four days," you "start feeling better." The lesson he draws is practical. If a bad stretch is passing on its own rhythm, the person inside it does not have to treat every dip as proof that something is broken in their life.

Read this way, time is a reminder of patience. The mind has tides, and recognizing a tide is different from being drowned by it.

How does the company you keep change your mood?

The third factor is the simplest to observe in daily life. "What type of company you keep? That impacts our mind," he says. He describes the mechanism in ordinary terms: "If you sit with someone who is all negative and you move away from them and you carry all that negativity in you, suddenly you find yourself not in a good space." The reverse works too. "If you sit with some good company, you feel there is a change again in your mind. Good company flips the situation."

The image of carrying something away from a room is useful. A conversation can end while its tone keeps going. Gurudev is pointing at the way a mood travels: it leaves the room with you unless something interrupts it. That makes company less a matter of social preference and more a question of what you are letting into your state. Choosing who you sit with becomes a form of attention, not only a form of affection.

What does wisdom do that food and company cannot?

The fourth factor is the one he seems to weigh most heavily, though the clip never says so directly. "Wisdom has an impact on the mind," he says. He then defines the kind of wisdom he has in mind as more than knowledge. It is "if you have had a glimpse of the vastness of life, of the universe, of what's all going around." When that glimpse is present, he says, "you know you are able to manage, you're able to just snap out of any unpleasant situation."

This is a striking claim, and it changes the logic of the list. The first three factors describe pressures that act on you. Wisdom, as he describes it, is the one that answers back. A person who has seen the scale of life is not free of the other four. Their food can still be wrong, their timing can still be off, their company can still be draining. But the unpleasant state has less grip, because the mind has a wider frame in which to place it. The word "snap" matters here. He is describing a quick return, the sense of stepping out of a fog rather than sitting in it for a week.

Does the place you are in shape your mind?

Near the end of the clip he adds a fifth item almost in passing. "The impact of place, of course there is." He then gathers the list back together: "The impact of food is there definitely. Impact of company is also there. Impact of time is also there." The phrase "of course" signals that he considers place obvious. Rooms, cities, noise, light, and air all register on a sensitive mind, and most people feel this without naming it.

Place is also where his list begins to convert into a practice. You can change the room you sit in more easily than you can change the stars, and more easily than you can change a long-standing habit of wisdom. Place is one of the few factors that can be adjusted in the next hour.

What is the clip leaving unsaid?

The most important sentence in the video may be the one that is never finished. After weighing food, time, company, and place, Gurudev says: "But more than all these four aspects, what really can help you what..." The transcript breaks off there. The clip is only about two minutes long, and the rest of the thought is not available in the material provided, so any claim about what he considers the single most powerful support would be guesswork.

That gap is worth respecting. The structure of the talk makes the reader expect a climax, and the sentence implies that the four factors are not the final word. If he is building toward an answer, it is likely the one the video was meant to lead to. Anyone who wants that answer should watch his longer teachings rather than fill the gap themselves.

How can you use this five-factor check in an ordinary day?

Gurudev's talk does not provide a formal checklist, but his five categories lend themselves to a quiet, honest review when your mood drops without an obvious cause. Ask whether you ate at a bad hour, whether the food was fresh and well digested, and whether something in the calendar, the season, or the days ahead could account for the change. Look at who you have been sitting with. Notice the room you are in. Then ask whether you have had any sense of the larger picture lately, because by his account that is the factor most able to help you step out of a low.

The aim is not to blame yourself for every bad afternoon. It is to stop treating a shifting mind as a verdict on your life. Gurudev's point, as far as this clip goes, is that the mind is shaped by forces that are partly visible and partly not, and that a few of them are within reach.

Where to go from here

Start with the factors you can change today: what you eat and when, who you spend time with, and the room you are in. Watch the full talks on Gurudev's channel to hear how he develops the idea of wisdom and what he believes "really can help" when the other four are not enough. And keep a simple note for a few weeks, marking the days you feel low and what came before them. You may find, as he suggests, that some of these tides pass on their own, and that the clearest way through them is a wider view of your own life.

[0:00] Five things affect our mind. Number one,

[0:04] food. Food has affect on your mind. If

[0:08] you eat at wrong time or if the food is

[0:10] not well digested or it's a wrong food,

[0:13] if it's a stale food, it has an impact

[0:17] on your mind. [music] The next thing is

[0:20] time. Suppose you're taking [music] care

[0:22] of your diet, you're taking good food,

[0:24] everything is okay, your digestion

[0:26] system is okay, but suddenly some time

[0:29] gets [music] you. It makes your mind go

[0:32] in circles. This is the impact [music]

[0:35] of the cosmos, the impact of movement of

[0:39] stars, whatever that is. That has

[0:42] [music] an impact on your mind. So,

[0:44] different times you feel happy or

[0:46] unhappy suddenly. And then those after

[0:49] those two two and half day, three days,

[0:50] four days,

[0:51] >> [music]

[0:51] >> suddenly you start feeling better. Food,

[0:54] time. And then the third thing is

[0:56] company.

[0:58] What [music] type of company you keep?

[1:00] That impacts our mind. If you sit with

[1:03] someone who is all negative and you you

[1:05] move away from them and you carry all

[1:08] that negativity in you

[1:10] and suddenly you find yourself not in a

[1:12] good space. And if you sit with some

[1:15] good company, you feel there is a change

[1:19] again in your mind. Good company flips

[1:23] the

[1:23] >> [music]

[1:23] >> situation. And then wisdom.

[1:26] Wisdom has an impact on the mind. But if

[1:30] you have had a glimpse of the vastness

[1:33] of life, of the universe, of

[1:36] what's all going around,

[1:37] then you know you are able to manage,

[1:40] you're able to just snap out of any

[1:44] unpleasant [music]

[1:45] situation. The impact of place, of

[1:48] course there is.

[1:49] The impact of food is there definitely.

[1:52] Impact of company is also there. Impact

[1:55] of time is also there. But more than all

[1:59] these four aspects, what really can help

Questions fréquemment posées

In his short YouTube talk, Gurudev names food, time, company, wisdom, and place as the forces that affect the mind. He says wrong, stale, or poorly digested food affects it, that the rhythm of time and the movement of stars does too, and that the company you keep changes your state. He describes wisdom as a glimpse of the vastness of life, and he mentions place as a factor of course.
Gurudev addresses this directly, saying that even when your diet and digestion are in order, time can suddenly affect your mind and make it go in circles. He describes such dips as passing after a few days, roughly two and a half to four days in his description. He does not claim a precise mechanism in the clip.
He says that sitting with negative people can leave you carrying their negativity even after you move away, while sitting with good company brings a change in your mind. The phrase 'good company flips the situation' sums up his point that the people around you can reverse a bad state.
In the talk, Gurudev says that if you have had a glimpse of the vastness of life and the universe, you can manage and snap out of unpleasant situations. He frames wisdom as a wider perspective rather than only accumulated knowledge. The clip does not spell out the method beyond that.
In this clip, Gurudev says time has an impact on the mind, calling it the impact of the cosmos and the movement of stars, 'whatever that is.' He presents it as an observed effect on how people feel, not as a scientifically proven mechanism, and the video does not offer further evidence.
The clip ends mid-sentence while he is saying 'what really can help you,' so the answer is not in this short video. Viewers can look for his longer talks on his official YouTube channel or his Talks podcast on Spotify, where the full idea is likely developed.
