Devotion as Strength: Miranda Macpherson on Surrender and Grace

Miranda Macpherson
Miranda Macpherson

À regarder · 7

The session begins with a flame. Miranda Macpherson asks her listeners to behold a candle together, to light "the inner flame of our hearts," and to open themselves to whatever grace and insight might come. It is an unhurried start for a talk that runs close to ninety minutes, and it sets the tone for everything that follows: devotion is not a mood to be cultivated for its own sake. In this 2023 teaching, Macpherson argues that devotion is the most direct route to felt grace, and that the energy it releases is not only sweet but strong, capable of moving a person beyond self-centeredness. Her central claim is that the love we already feel for a spouse, a child, or a pet is the same force that, turned toward the source of being, becomes the engine of the spiritual path.

What does devotion actually do in a spiritual life?

Macpherson's definition is deliberately practical. Devotion is "a deep and profound commitment," a "passionate dedication to something or someone that we love," and she insists it is never only a feeling. In her words from the talk, devotion "drives us to actions that take us above and beyond our self-centeredness" (around 7:52 in the recording). That phrase carries the whole argument. A devotion that changes nothing about how you behave is, in her framing, incomplete.

She widens the definition to include a sense of calling, a mission, or a cause "dear to our heart," and she applies it to the spiritual path itself and to what she calls "the divine." Whatever the object, she says, devotion "activates our deep heart," "activates our love," and "brings alive our beautiful qualities." Most people hear the word heart and think of kindness and joy. Macpherson wants her audience to add courage and strength, which she describes as a "potency that moves us."

This matters because many contemplative traditions treat devotion as a soft, emotional doorway, something to be outgrown once the mind is quiet. Macpherson's position runs the other way. For her, devotion is a source of energy, the thing that gives a practitioner the ignition to keep going.

Why does surrender feel impossible to the ego?

Surrender sits at the center of the talk, and Macpherson is careful about what it means. It is not, she says, only a matter of giving up bad habits, fears, or doubts, though those obviously cause trouble in our lives and relationships. The deeper surrender involves letting go of "our very perception of what we are." She draws on two figures to name this. Ramana Maharshi, as she recounts him, called it the surrender of "that construct that I am the Doer," and she links that construct to the sense of "separate somebodiness" that she believes drives contraction and the need to control life.

She is frank that the concept is easy to state and hard to live. Letting go of a single familiar way of navigating life, she notes, "can feel terrifying." Then comes the line that reorients the whole idea: "our ego can't do surrender." The ego cannot manufacture its own release. What it can do is learn to allow. That is why Macpherson describes surrender as "an ongoing process of ego relaxation" rather than a single act of willpower.

If surrender cannot be forced, something else must do the loosening. In Macpherson's account, that something is Grace, along with love and support "from all directions and dimensions." Devotion is the bridge: it is, she says, "nothing opens up our felt experience of Grace more directly than devotion."

How can you feel the devotion you already have?

The most practical stretch of the talk comes around the nine-minute mark, when Macpherson stops explaining and starts guiding. She asks listeners to close their eyes and call to mind someone they really love, "even if your loving of them is imperfect." Her examples are ordinary: a husband or wife, a dear friend, a child, a pet. She asks them to see the person's face, to feel how dear they are, and then to notice what that love draws forth.

The exercise has three steps, and each one builds on the last. First, notice the willingness the love produces: the wish to prioritize someone's well-being, to do things that help them thrive or bring them pleasure. Second, notice the "muscularity within it," the "dynamic force" inside the caring. Third, and this is the step Macpherson emphasizes most, trace the love back to its source. "Where is this love coming from?" she asks. "Who or what put it there?" She admits that listeners may not be able to answer, but she invites them to feel the direction the love is pulling.

Her interpretation is that the personal heart may feel itself "drawing back into something much deeper and wider," and that the love we know is "ultimately an arising of the divine's love of Love itself." It is a claim many teachers make, but Macpherson grounds it in an experience the listener has already had. You do not need a new emotion to begin. You need to notice the one you have, and to follow it.

She uses that noticing as the bridge to what she calls "the presence that which has known you and loved you all the days of your life." She quotes the fourteenth-century Sufi poet Hafez to frame the stakes: "no one can resist a Divine invitation that narrows all our choices down to just two." In her retelling, we can come to God "dressed for dancing or be carried on a stretcher." The line is funny and a little grim, and it is the kind of image that makes the stakes of surrender feel concrete.

Can devotion give strength, not just sweetness?

Macpherson returns repeatedly to the idea that devotion provides "a strength, an ignition" (around 15:36) for turning more fully inward. The strength she describes is not aggression. It is the capacity to keep opening, to see "what's true and what isn't true," and to let the next layer of surrender take place. This is what she means when she says the heart is potent: it supplies the courage that the inner journey demands.

Throughout the session she also treats the spiritual path as something that involves difficulty, and she is candid about her own experience. Around thirty-three minutes she says she had to deal with depression too, and she talks about the need to ask for help. For a teacher who speaks so confidently about grace, this admission grounds the abstract argument. Strength, in her telling, is not the absence of struggle. It is the willingness to reach for support when the work becomes heavy.

This is also where her practical emphasis on spiritual conditioning appears. She speaks of how deeply inherited patterns can shape what people believe about devotion, and she urges listeners to hold their experience with honesty rather than judgment. "Don't judge yourself for that," she says in one of the more pointed passages of the talk, "but do" stay with what you are noticing. The strength she is describing includes that refusal to turn against oneself.

Where does mantra fit into the picture?

The talk is framed around mantra, and it is worth knowing that. The session's description points viewers to the replay of Macpherson's Mantra Medicine course and to her album Streams of Grace: Mantra Medicine for Yoga & Inner Peace. In the closing stretch, the focus shifts toward the practical role of mantra as a way to pray, to rejuvenate, and to keep devotion alive in daily life. Mantra, in this context, is devotion made repeatable. It gives the heart a form it can return to when the feeling fades, which, as Macpherson's whole talk implies, it always eventually does.

What makes this teaching worth returning to is its refusal to separate devotion from action, love from strength, or grace from effort. Macpherson does not ask listeners to wait for the feeling to arrive. She asks them to find the love they already have, to follow it inward, and to let it move them. The candle at the start was a small image of the same idea: a flame lit once, then carried.

Where to go from here

If this talk resonates, the most useful next step is the exercise itself. Choose one person you love, imperfectly or otherwise, and spend a few minutes tracing that love: what it moves you to do, and where it seems to originate. Then consider the broader questions Macpherson raises. Where does your own sense of "separate somebodiness" show up in daily life? Where does surrender feel terrifying, and what would it mean to relax into it rather than force it? Watch the full recording for her guidance on mantra practice, and explore the Mantra Medicine course and Streams of Grace album she points to. Devotion, in her framing, is not something you finish. It is something you keep lighting.

[0:01] welcome everyone

[0:04] I'm so delighted that you're here and

[0:06] that you decided to join us for the next

[0:09] 90 minutes as we open up

[0:11] what is such an important and beautiful

[0:14] subject

[0:15] no matter what kind of spiritual path

[0:17] we're walking

[0:19] so given that for most traditions and

[0:23] peoples all around the world

[0:25] there's a natural ritual that usually

[0:28] comes with any kind of devotional

[0:30] practice

[0:32] and that is really of lighting a candle

[0:34] I want to light a candle for us

[0:37] so I'm going to just light that

[0:42] as together we just take a moment

[0:53] so just beholding the flame

[0:58] together we light the inner flame of our

[1:01] hearts

[1:05] and we open ourselves to all the grace

[1:10] and the Insight that we can receive to

[1:13] ignite our understanding and our

[1:16] experience

[1:19] and for what we experience together

[1:21] today

[1:24] somehow be shared as Beauty and truth

[1:28] and benefit widely

[1:31] throughout the one family of humanity

[1:37] so let us just

[1:41] take a moment to breathe and be

[1:48] sensing the way that your chair

[1:51] is cradling your body and welcoming you

[1:54] into the present

[2:00] sensing the welcome of the Earth under

[2:03] your feet

[2:09] sensing the life-giving oxygen that

[2:12] arrives With Every Breath You Take

[2:19] as you welcome yourself

[2:26] as you welcome yourself Wherever You Are

[2:31] and you welcome that part of you

[2:36] that loves and wants intimate contact

[2:39] with reality

[2:43] with the divine

[2:48] with what you really are

[2:55] so

[2:57] feel see sense as if your heart

[3:02] is opening

[3:04] as you breathe

[3:07] like an old-fashioned camera opens that

[3:10] shutter

[3:12] to let the light through

[3:18] so I'm going to sing

[3:21] a line of a prayer from a great

[3:24] devotional Master Yogananda

[3:28] whose book

[3:29] autobiography of a yogi maybe you've

[3:31] read

[3:35] and as I sing we'll sing this three

[3:38] times

[3:41] door of my heart open wide I keep for

[3:49] thee

[3:51] the door of my heart open wide I keep

[3:59] for thee

[4:03] the door of my heart

[4:08] open wide I keep for thee

[4:36] me

[4:37] if you have been walking a spiritual

[4:40] path for some time as I know many of you

[4:43] have

[4:44] then surely you know

[4:48] that it's really all about surrender

[4:51] and not just surrender of our fears and

[4:54] our habits and doubts and tendencies

[4:56] that obviously create trouble in our in

[5:00] our lives and in our relationships and

[5:02] in our world

[5:05] but the surrender that's really called

[5:08] forth for every one of us even if we're

[5:11] not even consciously walking a spiritual

[5:14] path

[5:15] takes us

[5:17] to complete sender surrender and that

[5:20] involves Letting Go not only of the

[5:23] things that get in the way but surrender

[5:25] of our very

[5:26] perception of what we are

[5:29] as ramadas used to call it surrender of

[5:32] our separate somebodiness

[5:35] or as Ramana mahashi called it surrender

[5:38] of that construct that I am the Doer

[5:43] and of course that separates

[5:45] somebodiness where we feel that we're a

[5:47] separate entity is really what drives

[5:50] our contraction and our need to control

[5:53] life and all those habits and ways of

[5:56] being

[5:57] that block Grace pouring through us

[6:01] but it's easy to talk about surrender

[6:03] and it sounds easy conceptually

[6:06] but I'm sure you know that letting go of

[6:09] just one habit one way of being in the

[6:12] world one way of navigating life

[6:16] letting low getting go of your familiar

[6:18] identity perception of reality can feel

[6:20] terrifying it's huge

[6:23] furthermore our ego can't do surrender

[6:27] it's rather something we can learn to

[6:30] allow though and that's why I speak of

[6:32] surrender as an ongoing process of ego

[6:36] relaxation

[6:37] and in this process we need all the help

[6:40] we can get

[6:42] we need Grace

[6:44] we need love and support from all

[6:47] directions and dimensions

[6:50] to help Usher us into a Grace that's

[6:52] deeper than our minds

[6:55] and nothing opens up our felt experience

[6:57] of Grace more directly than devotion

[7:02] so what is devotion

[7:05] really it's a deep and profound

[7:07] commitment

[7:09] it's a passionate dedication to

[7:11] something or someone that we love

[7:15] and that births feelings of loyalty and

[7:17] reverence

[7:19] but not just feelings it drives us to

[7:22] actions it drives us to actions that

[7:25] take us above and beyond our

[7:27] self-centeredness

[7:29] that take us to serve that which we love

[7:32] that which is dear to our heart

[7:35] whether that which we love is our family

[7:38] or loved one

[7:40] or that which we feel devoted to can be

[7:42] our a sense of a calling or a mission in

[7:46] our life

[7:47] or it can be a cause that's deep in our

[7:50] heart dear to our heart

[7:52] and of course we can be devoted to our

[7:55] spiritual path and that which we relate

[7:58] to as the divine

[8:01] whatever the focus of our devotion what

[8:03] it really does that's so important is

[8:05] that it activates our deep heart it

[8:08] activates our love it activates and

[8:11] motivates us and it brings alive our

[8:15] beautiful qualities

[8:17] so we hear the word heart and we think

[8:19] obviously of sweetness and kindness and

[8:22] Beauty in fulfillment and joy which of

[8:26] course is wonderful and we all want more

[8:28] of

[8:29] but while we often aren't necessarily

[8:32] thinking of when we say heart is courage

[8:35] and strength as well

[8:37] potency that moves us and takes us

[8:41] Beyond self-centeredness

[8:44] and we all know it in our own way I'm

[8:47] sure you already experience devotion in

[8:51] your life right now

[8:53] so I'm going to invite us to mine our

[8:56] ordinary level experience of devotion

[9:00] So Close Your Eyes For a Moment

[9:05] and call to mind someone or something

[9:08] that you really love even if your loving

[9:11] of them is imperfect

[9:17] so maybe that's someone that you love is

[9:20] your husband or your wife

[9:23] or your dear friend

[9:26] or your child

[9:29] or your pet

[9:34] take a deeper breath and let yourself

[9:38] see their face

[9:40] okay

[9:42] feel how dear they are to you how much

[9:45] you appreciate

[9:47] and care for them

[9:53] and let yourself feel that deep caring

[9:58] let yourself really contact

[10:03] how it is when you let yourself be all

[10:06] your love for them

[10:18] and notice in this love and caring you

[10:21] have for this person

[10:24] notice what it draws forth within you

[10:31] perhaps this love you feel for them

[10:35] moves you into a willingness to

[10:37] prioritize their well-being

[10:42] to actually do things

[10:44] for them that help them thrive

[10:48] or bring them pleasure or Delight

[10:51] foreign

[10:57] let yourself feel not only the fact of

[11:01] your love and your caring

[11:04] but the muscularity within it

[11:09] the dynamic force that is within your

[11:12] love for them

[11:21] and notice how that feels

[11:31] now

[11:33] turn into the very source of the love

[11:36] and the devotion you feel to your loved

[11:39] one

[11:43] where is this love coming from

[11:52] you feel it in your heart

[11:56] and maybe you feel that warmth and

[12:00] devotion spreading throughout and beyond

[12:03] your body too

[12:09] maybe you feel that spreading to other

[12:12] centers in different ways

[12:22] but where is the love itself coming from

[12:34] who or what put it there

[12:43] you may not be able to answer that

[12:45] question but just

[12:49] let yourself feel into where it's

[12:52] drawing you to

[13:00] you might feel as if your personal heart

[13:05] is drawing back into something

[13:08] much deeper and wider

[13:17] that you naturally know

[13:22] is divine

[13:24] inherently

[13:29] that your love

[13:31] is ultimately an arising of the divine's

[13:35] love of Love itself

[13:45] that it is your heart

[14:12] let your eyes open when you're ready

[14:18] let's explore what you perhaps tasted

[14:22] there

[14:25] perhaps in this simple contemplation on

[14:29] the ordinary devotion that I'm sure you

[14:32] feel for people for loved ones

[14:36] you could feel

[14:38] what a powerful motivating force this

[14:41] devotion that you feel actually is

[14:46] how it's more than just a feeling

[14:49] it's muscular it makes you not just want

[14:52] to say I love you

[14:55] but it moves you to act I love you

[15:02] so when you turn that devotional power

[15:06] to something or someone and you turn

[15:08] that

[15:09] ordinary level Devotion to the source of

[15:13] your being the source of Your Love

[15:15] itself

[15:17] something very important comes online

[15:21] you start to feel your natural

[15:24] connection your

[15:26] your heart as an extension of divine

[15:29] love itself

[15:32] and you feel that it's powerful it's not

[15:34] just beautiful

[15:36] it provides a strength an ignition

[15:40] to turn more substantially within

[15:42] wherever you find yourself on the inner

[15:45] journey home

[15:46] and to keep opening to see what's true

[15:49] and what isn't true

[15:51] to let the next level of surrender take

[15:54] place

[15:57] perhaps just in this simple

[15:59] contemplation we just did

[16:02] you felt a touch of

[16:05] what we could call the presence

[16:09] that which has known you and loved you

[16:12] all the days of your life

[16:15] that which we all exist Within

[16:19] and that we are all part of

[16:22] even if we don't yet feel that as our

[16:25] everyday emotional reality

[16:29] the great Sufi Master of the 14th

[16:32] century hafez

[16:34] said

[16:35] you've been invited to meet the friend

[16:41] no one can resist a Divine invitation

[16:45] that narrows all our choices down to

[16:47] just two

[16:50] we can come to God dressed for dancing

[16:53] or be carried on a stretcher to God's

[16:56] word

[16:58] foreign

[17:00] subject of devotion inevitably brings up

[17:04] whatever feelings and messy stuff we

[17:08] might have

[17:10] about this very provocative word god

[17:15] every single one of us even if we call

[17:18] ourselves an atheist have a relationship

[17:20] with the source of our being

[17:22] even if we think we don't

[17:25] many years ago I lived in Oxford England

[17:28] and I had the privilege of sitting at a

[17:31] dinner party next to a great

[17:34] philosophy professor and his specialty

[17:36] was ancient Greek Theology and cosmology

[17:40] and he explained to me that in ancient

[17:43] Greek

[17:44] the most accurate translation of the

[17:47] word logos

[17:48] which is spoken of in the the chapter

[17:52] the biblical chapter of John in the

[17:55] beginning was the word

[17:56] is a crude translation of logos he said

[18:00] a purer translation of logos means

[18:03] sacred Bond

[18:05] and he was inviting us to open up to

[18:08] look at that passage as a way to say in

[18:11] the beginning was the sacred Bond

[18:16] a sacred bond that we all have with the

[18:20] source of our being whatever we want to

[18:21] call it

[18:23] when we really look at our own existence

[18:26] and we look at life itself it's pretty

[18:28] obvious we didn't create ourselves

[18:31] we were birthed into being by something

[18:36] that no one religion or cosmology or

[18:39] even science can fully explain

[18:42] Rumi said it beautifully when he said

[18:44] something opens our wings

[18:48] something makes hurt and boredom

[18:51] disappear

[18:53] someone fills the cup in front of us

[18:57] so inevitably the whole subject of

[19:00] devotion brings that up who or what are

[19:04] we coming in Devotion to either

[19:06] willingly or in resistance

[19:09] and so this is the reason why so many

[19:12] people sidestep devotion because it

[19:15] brings up all our associations with

[19:18] devotion and God

[19:20] and of course understandably we can

[19:22] associate a kind of a passionate

[19:25] wide open-hearted spirituality with a

[19:29] lot of stuff that we might have felt

[19:31] either injured by or have found

[19:33] downright distasteful

[19:36] we might have understandable aversions

[19:40] towards TV evangelists

[19:43] religious fanatics

[19:45] whoever it was that told you as a child

[19:48] what you should believe

[19:50] and what was in store for you if you

[19:51] didn't toe the line

[19:54] there have been countless Abominations

[19:56] in the name of God it's a really

[19:59] heartbreaking part of the human history

[20:01] what a mess we've made

[20:03] in our misunderstandings about the

[20:06] nature of reality and our need to lock

[20:09] it down and say this is the only way

[20:13] so just as it's really important to not

[20:15] bypass the ways you've been impacted by

[20:18] your family of origin your mum and dad's

[20:20] stuff you can't just meditate that away

[20:23] so it's really important and sacred work

[20:26] to be willing to see how you've been

[20:29] impacted by your spiritual conditioning

[20:32] and by all those things that create a

[20:34] version in you as you open up to

[20:36] devotion

[20:38] whatever else you receive from today I

[20:40] really hope

[20:41] that you experience the encouragement to

[20:44] let yourself be in a deep and honest

[20:47] inquiry about how you might have been

[20:50] impacted by your spiritual conditioning

[20:52] what aversions you have and why

[20:56] and let yourself feel that see it meet

[20:59] it contact that messy awkward material

[21:04] with love and compassion and a Devotion

[21:06] to what's true whatever whatever that

[21:10] takes you

[21:11] because that's how the forgiveness

[21:13] that cleanses us from the dust and the

[21:16] Distortion can come

[21:18] and that's how we can heal and re-emerge

[21:21] into the possibility of an authentic

[21:24] spiritual life

[21:26] that's not some kind of reaction against

[21:28] something we didn't like

[21:32] so that's how we can come freshly to the

[21:35] friend

[21:36] I love that term sufis used the friend

[21:40] and befriend an authentic way to pray to

[21:44] commune with the source of our being

[21:46] even if we're not quite sure what that

[21:48] is yet

[21:50] and in that communion in that coming to

[21:53] the Divine we can come with where we are

[21:56] we can come

[21:58] and find the grace we need or be found

[22:01] by it rather

[22:03] we can empty out our fears we can find

[22:06] the strength and the courage to navigate

[22:08] a big life change

[22:11] we can

[22:13] open to that which helps us to become

[22:15] deeper and wiser and clearer a more

[22:18] beautiful Noble human being

[22:20] and to live as meaningfully as possible

[22:23] and most of all to let our love

[22:26] not be held back

[22:29] to let our love Express itself in ways

[22:32] that are both fulfilling for you and a

[22:34] blessing for others

[22:37] so where to begin

[22:39] I think the most important thing about

[22:41] devotion is that it's not really about

[22:44] the words

[22:45] we can say beautiful prayers we can in

[22:49] tone mantras we can create our own

[22:51] prayers but really it's about coming

[22:53] with holy empty hands under the source

[22:56] of your being with a pure heart

[22:58] and coming with sincerity

[23:02] we can come in distress

[23:04] we can come

[23:07] crying out help

[23:09] and help me be receptive to the help

[23:12] rather than double down in my resistance

[23:14] and positions

[23:16] takes a lot of Grace sometimes to

[23:18] actually admit you were wrong or that

[23:21] you don't know half of it

[23:24] we can come in anger

[23:26] sometimes we turn on the news and we can

[23:29] feel so heartbroken and frustrated as we

[23:31] look out at the world

[23:33] and see so much needless suffering and

[23:36] and how crazy it is

[23:39] we can feel a kind of a frustration and

[23:42] we can doubt that there even is a divine

[23:45] presence that cares

[23:49] right it's hard sometimes to reconcile

[23:53] if there is some loving force in the

[23:56] universe then how much why so much

[23:58] suffering goes down

[24:00] that doesn't feel Fair

[24:04] we can come

[24:06] to the Divine in gratitude

[24:08] right even if we're not sure who or what

[24:10] we're saying thanks to

[24:12] however this is really important in

[24:16] those

[24:16] moments where our hearts really awake to

[24:19] the grace

[24:20] that is here all the time that is living

[24:22] and breathing us it's very natural to

[24:25] give thanks and we know deep down that

[24:28] it's the truth to do so

[24:31] we can come in awe and I love how any

[24:34] lamott summarized some of the three

[24:37] different types of prayers as prayers of

[24:40] help

[24:41] prayers of thanks

[24:43] and prayers of wow of awe these are all

[24:47] valid ways of coming with holy empty

[24:51] hands unto your Source unto the heart of

[24:53] your being

[24:56] the devotion evolves as we do and it can

[24:59] express very differently from where we

[25:01] find ourselves on the path

[25:03] Rumi famously said come come whoever you

[25:07] are even though you've broken your vows

[25:10] a thousand times

[25:12] devotion invites you to Come As You Are

[25:17] come from where you are

[25:20] whether you experience being on a

[25:24] spiritual journey that's fundamentally a

[25:26] journey to the divine

[25:29] or whether we experience ourselves as a

[25:33] journey with divine presence

[25:36] or whether we're experiencing being on a

[25:39] journey as the Divine extending itself

[25:44] all of these are valid all of these are

[25:46] beautiful and their own way and they

[25:49] look very different there's no right or

[25:51] wrong and there's no hierarchy

[25:55] so sometimes we're on the journey to the

[25:58] divine

[25:59] Martin buber the Hasidic scholar

[26:02] summarized that Journey to the Divine as

[26:05] an eye thou relationship and so devotion

[26:09] in that phase of our journey is I thou

[26:14] we experience ourselves as an individual

[26:16] Seeker seeking meaningful contact with

[26:19] something greater than ourselves

[26:22] and it's important not to be spiritual

[26:24] snobs about this I mean anyone who's

[26:27] walked a 12-step program has experienced

[26:30] how transformative this can be

[26:34] so even the non-dual sage Ramana mahashi

[26:38] one of the greatest sages that India has

[26:41] produced whose primary focus was about

[26:45] inviting us to enter into that question

[26:47] who am I

[26:49] he also said admit your inability

[26:52] that your ego cannot do higher surrender

[26:55] higher sorry I'm saying that again he

[26:58] said admit your inability

[27:00] that your ego cannot do surrender and

[27:03] you need a higher power to help you

[27:07] so every spiritual tradition has given

[27:10] us a way to commune when we experience

[27:13] being on a journey to the Divine we're

[27:16] experiencing ourselves as a separate

[27:19] someone

[27:21] so even Traditions like Buddhism that

[27:23] don't believe either in a Supreme Being

[27:26] or that ultimately there even is a

[27:28] separate self

[27:30] offer us countless practices to do that

[27:33] in Tibetan Buddhism

[27:35] that many of the practices are deity

[27:38] practices

[27:39] where we're in turning a mantra a

[27:42] specific Mantra to a deity like Tara

[27:46] or like manjushri and we're visualizing

[27:50] and praying the Mantra sensing and

[27:54] visualizing

[27:55] light pouring from an enlightened being

[27:58] or a bodhisattva into us and ultimately

[28:01] taking residence up in our vessel

[28:07] so even though we might experience

[28:08] ourselves being on our knees in a

[28:11] stubborn juncture in our soul

[28:14] you know it's okay to know that we can

[28:16] ask for help from something greater that

[28:18] this is beautiful it's true it's real

[28:21] and it has value in fact most mystical

[28:25] Traditions that I've explored all speak

[28:27] to the importance of actually asking for

[28:30] help that it's a requirement

[28:32] and that we can ask for help both with

[28:35] the challenges that we experience on the

[28:37] ordinary level

[28:38] and also to go deeper and further on our

[28:42] spiritual path

[28:44] for complete and full realization

[28:46] and part of why I think

[28:48] they invite us to ask for help because

[28:51] until you ask sincerely

[28:55] you know you still believe that you're

[28:57] the doer you still think that you're the

[28:59] one in control which is the fundamental

[29:02] delusion that keeps us

[29:04] from really progressing as far as we

[29:07] could and this is why I say that if you

[29:09] want to come all the way home on the

[29:11] spiritual path you're going to need

[29:12] devotion

[29:14] it's a devotion that isn't about giving

[29:17] Divine orders

[29:19] or demands are not necessarily

[29:22] recommending the kind of Janice Joplin

[29:24] devotion oh Lord won't you buy me a

[29:27] Mercedes-Benz

[29:29] I'm really inviting you to come to a

[29:31] deeper place a more sincere place the

[29:34] place where you what you really want is

[29:37] help to open help to deepen help to be

[29:39] real

[29:41] help to be true help to

[29:44] be a noble and beautiful human being

[29:47] where it really matters

[29:51] so

[29:53] in this journey to the Divine if you

[29:56] have a relationship already that is

[29:59] Meaningful to you with a particular name

[30:01] or face of the Divine

[30:03] maybe you already have an inner intimate

[30:07] love and connection with Christ or with

[30:11] Tara or with Ramana or with Adonai or

[30:15] with the Holy Spirit or with great

[30:17] spirit and that's the name that opens

[30:21] your heart and lets you go there then

[30:23] don't mess with it

[30:25] but it's it also doesn't require to have

[30:28] a name

[30:30] it doesn't really require you to have

[30:32] faith in anything particular

[30:35] devotion ultimately isn't necessarily

[30:38] what you believe in

[30:40] it's more about

[30:41] leaning from your sincere heart to the

[30:45] source of the light

[30:47] and as we can all see when we've had a

[30:50] plant in our room that leans toward the

[30:52] light

[30:53] does that plant actually need to

[30:55] conceptually understand the mechanics of

[30:58] photosynthesis

[30:59] in order to lean towards that light that

[31:02] activates it

[31:04] no

[31:06] so your devotion doesn't have to be

[31:08] towards anything specific with a name or

[31:11] form

[31:13] given that you're here listening to this

[31:17] then clearly you feel some tiny yearning

[31:21] to return

[31:23] to something that you intuitively know

[31:26] is your spiritual home

[31:29] to a unity in a truth and a wholeness

[31:33] that is not conditioned by anything of

[31:36] this world

[31:38] this that is your heart's yearning for

[31:41] its home

[31:42] is sacred

[31:45] as you lean into that part of you it

[31:48] takes you on a pilgrimage

[31:50] and as you enter your own yearning

[31:54] you find that your own yearning is

[31:57] magnetic it magnetically draws you

[32:00] towards the Fulfillment of that yearning

[32:04] without you needing to do anything other

[32:07] than give yourself to it

[32:10] your deep heart knows God

[32:14] because God is the origin of your heart

[32:18] and though I'm sure you've wandered off

[32:21] into the spiritual Wilderness so many

[32:23] times

[32:24] thinking you were abandoned and alone

[32:26] and didn't matter much

[32:29] if you even feel a tiny bit of

[32:31] willingness

[32:32] and you lean into that love and that

[32:36] yearning

[32:37] Divine love divine presence starts

[32:40] calling you back

[32:42] and that's the grace of devotion

[32:46] so in the early days of my spiritual

[32:48] path when I was really starting to dig

[32:51] in to some real inner work on my journey

[32:55] and I was very much in that Paradigm of

[32:57] a journey to God

[32:59] I inevitably hit a lot of tough Boulders

[33:02] that we all have to face

[33:05] I had to

[33:06] tackle my own self-judgments

[33:10] I had to face fears I had to face my

[33:13] felt experience and perception and

[33:16] identity of being inadequate

[33:18] I had to deal with self-hatred and hurts

[33:22] from my family of origin conditioning

[33:24] I had to deal with depression too

[33:27] and I had to face the fact that there

[33:29] were behaviors that Spilled Out of me

[33:31] that I wish didn't

[33:33] behaviors that were very counter to my

[33:36] highest spiritual intentions

[33:39] it was humbling as I'm sure your inner

[33:42] work so far has been humbling to you too

[33:47] but I found that when I would get caught

[33:50] in something and I'd get reactive

[33:53] I'd learned to take myself on a walk and

[33:56] just pray commune

[33:59] and I would pray a very sort of

[34:02] open-hearted spontaneous kind of prayer

[34:05] I wouldn't reach for any kind of set

[34:06] prayer I would just pour it out

[34:09] giving up my egoic desires and

[34:11] motivations my anger my desires to be

[34:14] right or in control or put someone in

[34:16] their place

[34:18] you know to continue with my projections

[34:20] and delusions and lockdown into my

[34:23] defenses I'm sure you know all about

[34:25] what I'm talking about all that stuff

[34:28] I would just speak to God and I would

[34:31] give it up I'd give it up to Grace and

[34:33] I'd give myself back to Grace and all

[34:35] the Tangled mess

[34:37] and I ask for help in being more willing

[34:40] and more sincere

[34:42] being more open

[34:45] and I noticed that as I would pray like

[34:47] this it was a very naked gritty kind of

[34:50] real very messy human kind of prayer as

[34:53] I was walking

[34:55] right I noticed something started to

[34:57] happen that was really beautiful I

[34:59] started to feel my own purity

[35:03] through that Honesty through that

[35:05] emptying out process

[35:08] and I realized that I couldn't BS when I

[35:11] was coming to prayer it wasn't possible

[35:13] somehow

[35:14] and I realized that because somehow I

[35:17] instinctively could feel that in coming

[35:20] to prayer

[35:21] it was

[35:23] one and the same as coming to truth that

[35:26] love and truth and God were all one and

[35:28] the same

[35:29] so although I wasn't raised Catholic and

[35:32] so I had no history of confession I

[35:34] found the the relevance of that but

[35:37] without the intermediary or the need for

[35:40] religion

[35:42] and as I learned to work my material

[35:45] that way a lot of clarification and

[35:48] purification happened it was really

[35:50] helpful powerful

[35:53] and ignited an even deeper devotion

[35:55] Within Me

[35:57] I began to feel that despite my own many

[36:01] faults and bad habits I was loved

[36:04] I was beloved there was a game changer

[36:09] I want that for you passionately that's

[36:11] why I'm offering this webinar

[36:13] every single one of us no matter how

[36:16] much we've messed up no matter how much

[36:19] we stumble in ignorance

[36:21] we're all beloved Souls of God of the

[36:24] Divine we can never not be

[36:28] most of our suffering our neurotic

[36:31] suffering in life

[36:32] is really centered around the fact that

[36:35] we get disconnected from this in our

[36:37] experience

[36:38] inevitably to the young child that we

[36:41] were looking to the god and goddess

[36:43] called Mom and Dad

[36:46] that were the source figures to that

[36:49] little one the ones that seemed like

[36:51] they were omniscient the ones that we

[36:53] were completely helpless towards

[36:55] the ones that we were looking to every

[36:58] to for everything

[37:01] inevitably we received our parents love

[37:03] mixed together with their ego

[37:06] mixed together with their wounds and

[37:08] limitations

[37:09] and the love that they hadn't been able

[37:11] to receive so they couldn't transmit

[37:14] completely

[37:15] and so in

[37:17] the limitations of the love that we

[37:20] received we start inevitably concluding

[37:23] that we're not fully loved that some

[37:26] parts of us aren't lovable

[37:28] or aren't right in some way

[37:31] and so this all gets Blended together we

[37:35] presume that however we experienced our

[37:38] parents love for us is the same as how

[37:41] the Divine feels for us

[37:44] you know our

[37:46] deep unconscious feelings about whether

[37:49] or not we're beloved

[37:51] in our interpersonal experience with our

[37:54] source figures our parents become

[37:57] intertwined with our perception of the

[38:01] love of God

[38:03] so it was really revolutionary for me to

[38:05] experience in the earlier stages as I

[38:08] was really digging in on the journey to

[38:10] God how all of this material started to

[38:13] untangle itself

[38:14] begin to clarify and dissolve

[38:17] and then the devotion became deeper and

[38:21] wider and clearer and purer

[38:24] so it became this inner altar that I

[38:26] could bring confusions and resistance

[38:29] and difficulties too

[38:31] it could give me a place I could bring

[38:35] things I didn't know how to deal with

[38:37] otherwise and I experienced a kind of a

[38:40] Divine mothering

[38:42] that didn't have the limitations that my

[38:45] ordin my Earthly mother had and allowed

[38:47] me to forgive her

[38:49] I could receive the Divine fathering for

[38:52] the parts of myself that had been

[38:54] injured by my human father and then the

[38:58] capacity to forgive and love him for who

[39:01] he is is really pretty amazing

[39:04] so it brought immense clarification and

[39:07] also maturity and with it strength

[39:10] courage and greater capacity to face

[39:13] important things that really did need to

[39:16] be faced

[39:17] and find forgiveness for myself and for

[39:20] everyone

[39:22] and that's what devotion can give to you

[39:24] too

[39:25] there really is the help

[39:28] the grace to help us with absolutely

[39:30] everything including the really Mucky

[39:33] messy tricky things

[39:35] I don't think there's real complete

[39:38] recovery from trauma without Grace

[39:41] is a very powerful Ally in our process

[39:44] of healing

[39:45] even though we don't necessarily know

[39:47] how the grace comes

[39:50] Grace helps us open to the miraculous

[39:55] I love what Annie Lamont has to say she

[39:57] said

[39:58] we don't understand the mystery of Grace

[40:02] only that it meets us where we are

[40:05] and it never leaves us where it found us

[40:10] so as our devotion deepens and we learn

[40:13] to let divine presence penetrate our

[40:16] heart and heal our minds and soothe our

[40:19] nervous system

[40:20] there's a further refinement that

[40:22] happens and this is where

[40:25] we see how important devotion really is

[40:28] because

[40:29] as our troubles and dense ego sufferings

[40:33] start to get Unwound

[40:36] we need the the motivation that the

[40:40] devotion provides because usually in

[40:43] that stage of the journey to the Divine

[40:45] our primary motivation is our need to

[40:48] get past our suffering

[40:50] I mean let's face it for most of us

[40:52] that's what brings us to the spiritual

[40:55] path we want to get past our suffering

[40:58] and there's nothing wrong with that

[40:59] motivation at first because

[41:01] spiritual teaching and practice actually

[41:04] will help us

[41:06] to navigate and deal with our suffering

[41:10] but unless our devotion ignites to

[41:13] another level

[41:14] we often lose motivation and get you

[41:17] know a little lazy on our path

[41:19] and so we can't go further and deeper

[41:24] so when we start letting ourselves

[41:27] feel not only the relief from our

[41:31] suffering but the fact

[41:33] that we really do love what it is that

[41:36] loves us

[41:37] it brings us alive it brings us into

[41:42] the truth and Beauty itself

[41:45] we find

[41:47] ourselves coming to a new stage of the

[41:50] spiritual path

[41:52] and that is a journey where we

[41:54] experience our self journeying with

[41:57] divine presence

[41:59] it's a kind of spiritual partnership

[42:02] our prayers become not necessarily so

[42:05] much help

[42:06] or you know working through difficult

[42:09] things

[42:10] but we find that it's less interesting

[42:13] to keep wandering off

[42:16] ow

[42:17] picking up the same old stories become a

[42:19] little boring after a while

[42:21] because we start to see that they're not

[42:24] really the truth

[42:26] they're really based on our

[42:27] misunderstandings of reality of others

[42:31] of Who We Are

[42:34] and so

[42:35] our motivation on the journey with is

[42:38] because

[42:39] it starts to become purer we love what

[42:41] starts to happen to us

[42:44] we love how it feels when we relax our

[42:47] need for control

[42:49] when we discover how blessed we are and

[42:52] that

[42:53] there is this goodness and truth and

[42:56] Beauty that's always at accompanying us

[42:58] along the way

[43:01] so our devotion

[43:03] becomes purer it feels like we're

[43:06] keeping visual

[43:07] we're nurturing that inner flame of love

[43:10] and Remembrance

[43:12] it makes us want to cultivate presence

[43:16] to remember oh I've come off I've left

[43:19] myself I want to come back

[43:22] we cultivate more presence and we learn

[43:25] not to leave ourselves quite so much

[43:28] we discover that the grace that we hoped

[43:32] was there is actually the hair

[43:34] is alive it's real

[43:37] and we can lean into it not just to

[43:40] navigate things but

[43:42] we can lean into a depth of wisdom that

[43:45] really blows our minds

[43:48] we can ask all sorts of questions and we

[43:52] can

[43:53] let the Rippling of that presence find

[43:56] us in the silence without having to

[43:59] grasp to fill the space or get an answer

[44:03] we might begin to love how pure and

[44:06] clean we feel when we drop into presence

[44:10] and we experience that as its own reward

[44:14] and it often makes us want to serve some

[44:17] way

[44:19] we feel

[44:20] in this leg of the journey that we are

[44:23] now in

[44:24] a beautiful love affair a relationship

[44:27] of devotion

[44:30] all the Sufi poetry speaks of that in

[44:33] terms of lover and beloved

[44:36] and the stronger our experience our love

[44:40] for the Beloved and our receiving of the

[44:44] beloved's love for us

[44:47] starts coming alive and we feel the both

[44:50] parts of it

[44:51] even though

[44:53] we're still a lover loving the Beloved

[44:57] at a certain point as that gets Fuller

[45:00] and deeper

[45:01] even that tooness starts to break down

[45:05] the sufis have a saying it is the

[45:08] beloved's OWN love that loves the

[45:11] Beloved in me

[45:13] and so it starts knocking into

[45:15] non-duality

[45:17] and our journey opens as a journey as

[45:21] the Divine being as divine presence

[45:24] extending itself through this vessel

[45:29] that you call you right

[45:32] so when we start authentically bumping

[45:35] into non-dual experience which is not

[45:38] just tasting that we're at one with

[45:41] everything

[45:42] but it's where we experience ourselves

[45:45] as the one that's tasting

[45:47] I love how Saint Francis of Assisi said

[45:49] that the one you are looking for is the

[45:52] one who is looking

[45:54] so we experience ourselves as being

[45:58] within and as part of divine being

[46:02] so just in the same way that a Sunbeam

[46:05] cannot exist independently it is an

[46:08] extension of the Sun a radiation of the

[46:11] Sun

[46:12] and just as an individual wave is a

[46:14] rising uniquely out of the one ocean and

[46:18] each wave actually is the ocean and

[46:20] powered by the ocean

[46:22] so we start not just experiencing the

[46:26] unity in the Oneness

[46:28] but we start feeling how that affects

[46:31] the heart

[46:32] and there's an immense sense of love and

[46:36] beauty and we feel a love for all beings

[46:40] and that's the significance really of

[46:42] non-dual experience it's not just that

[46:44] you get to have these wonderful

[46:46] expansive experiences that are really

[46:48] cool

[46:49] it's that it produces

[46:51] more reverence and love for all of

[46:55] existence that you are not separate for

[47:00] and so of course

[47:02] here you are

[47:04] you know the journey as the Divine being

[47:08] extending itself the Divine love that is

[47:12] moving your heart is beautiful

[47:15] and it's also an experience of humility

[47:17] because it's not to your personal credit

[47:19] that this is so it just is actually how

[47:23] it is

[47:25] so you may or may not have had tastes of

[47:27] this and if you haven't then

[47:30] I hope this inspires you as a little

[47:34] preview of coming attractions

[47:36] that it's inevitable you're going to

[47:38] bump into

[47:40] but for me some flavors of non-dual

[47:43] experience have made the flame of my

[47:46] devotional heart brighter

[47:49] bringing more love and more fullness and

[47:51] then some other depths of non-dual

[47:55] experience

[47:56] have just taken me Beyond any

[48:00] possibility of a prayer

[48:03] you know after 20 years of prayer and

[48:06] meditation being the primary thrust of

[48:09] my spiritual path

[48:11] after an Awakening that happened in

[48:14] Ramana mahashi's cave in India that

[48:17] silenced every concept I ever had

[48:20] it felt like

[48:22] not only could I not pray but it felt

[48:24] like there were no more lips to speak

[48:27] any kind of words to anything that was

[48:30] other than itself

[48:32] so that was awkward for me being such a

[48:36] bacter such a devotional person

[48:40] soul

[48:42] and perhaps you understand a little of

[48:44] this from your experience maybe you've

[48:46] had moments

[48:47] where everything just disappears into a

[48:50] great silence

[48:52] so

[48:53] for so many years

[48:55] were not for so many years I had been

[48:57] praying and then there was this period

[48:59] of about nine months where all of that

[49:01] dropped away it was strange but I went

[49:05] with it

[49:06] and then one day nine months afterwards

[49:09] I was out running in the woods I

[49:11] happened to be on a retreat

[49:13] and without any effort or thought I

[49:16] began to feel this extraordinary

[49:18] upwelling of ecstatic Joy emerging out

[49:21] of my heart it was really really

[49:23] blissful

[49:24] and it wasn't related to anything

[49:26] nothing had happened

[49:28] there was no obvious cause for it it was

[49:31] just this atwelling of Ananda right love

[49:35] joy Bliss coming from within my heart

[49:37] and I began to laugh as I was running

[49:40] and it exploded into a bliss and I

[49:43] started to spontaneously singram

[49:55] and here it was

[49:57] devotion

[49:58] re-emerging but in a new way from where

[50:02] I was on the path then from anore

[50:05] non-dual place

[50:08] so I understood what I had read many

[50:10] years ago of one of my favorite feminine

[50:13] Mystics

[50:15] kashmiri saint called Lala of the 14th

[50:18] century and she wrote a fabulous poem

[50:20] that said playfully you hid from me

[50:25] all day I looked

[50:28] and then I discovered I was you

[50:31] and the celebration of that began

[50:35] so it felt like such a celebration when

[50:38] devotion came back

[50:40] but without subject and object and with

[50:43] no agenda for anything particular to

[50:45] happen

[50:46] it was the heart in its freedom in its

[50:50] deep Ananda and joy

[50:54] Ramana mahashi said that when the self

[50:57] is realized

[50:59] the name of God repeats itself

[51:02] effortlessly and continuously in the

[51:05] heart

[51:07] and that was my experience I found that

[51:09] in toning mantras in particular would

[51:13] happen spontaneously just for the

[51:15] pleasure of it as a way to recirculate

[51:18] as a way to just marinate in remembrance

[51:22] in the feeling and the enjoyment and the

[51:25] beauty and the truth of the Holy Name

[51:28] that I experienced was the held also in

[51:33] its resonance the truth of what I really

[51:36] am the truth of what you really are the

[51:39] truth of what everything and everyone

[51:41] really is what always has been and

[51:45] forever shall be it's such a celebration

[51:47] when we feel that deeply

[51:51] so this also leads me to another point

[51:54] which is how devotional practice is

[51:57] really helpful in offsetting the common

[52:00] pitfalls of non-duality

[52:02] that mostly

[52:04] center around hiding in our spiritual

[52:07] Concepts

[52:09] getting a little dry as we hang out in

[52:11] the vastness

[52:12] it's really easy to forget that love

[52:16] is also what we are as well as pure

[52:19] awareness as well as emptiness right

[52:23] besides we humans are relational beings

[52:27] and even though subject object might

[52:29] give way to Unity right nevertheless we

[52:33] humans are relational beings we love to

[52:37] love it's natural we need it it's part

[52:40] of Who We Are

[52:42] the Great non-dual Sage Ramana mahashi

[52:45] who was famous as I said earlier for

[52:47] bringing everything back to that central

[52:49] question who am I he was a great nyani

[52:52] nyani which is the yoga of wisdom of

[52:55] soft inquiry

[52:56] yet he himself didn't write much of all

[53:01] of these you know very nyani-esque kind

[53:04] of sayings that we read in the books

[53:07] mostly those sayings were things that

[53:10] people around him who were Vedic

[53:12] Scholars wrote down

[53:14] that were his responding to questions

[53:17] that were given to him in satsang

[53:20] however one of the few things he

[53:22] actually did write down interestingly

[53:24] enough

[53:25] were all these poems and prayers these

[53:28] bhajans that were full of devotion

[53:32] and they were full of Devotion to

[53:34] arunachula which is the sacred Mountain

[53:36] that he lived on

[53:38] which for Hindus in that part of the

[53:40] world

[53:41] is thought to be Shiva the absolute

[53:46] it's a manifestation of the absolute

[53:50] so even though he knew he wasn't a

[53:53] separate someone

[53:54] nevertheless he would pray his object of

[53:58] devotion was to arunachula

[54:01] he wrote prayers like this one he said

[54:04] Reign thy mercy on me and let thy

[54:08] knowledge burn me to ashes o arunachala

[54:12] he prayed for the grace of such an even

[54:15] deeper surrender even though he was

[54:18] profoundly surrendered in that

[54:21] he was the unchanging self and he knew

[54:24] it

[54:25] similar with another non-dual diet Nisa

[54:28] gaddata Maharaja who's famous for his

[54:31] luminous Clarity expressed in that

[54:34] spiritual classic I am that

[54:37] when you actually look at his life how

[54:39] he lived

[54:40] Nisa godato did traditional Hindu Puja

[54:44] which is ritual prayers and mantras to

[54:46] specific deities in the classical Hindu

[54:49] way and he did that five times a day

[54:52] even though he clearly realized

[54:54] he was not a separate someone there was

[54:56] nothing other to pray to

[54:59] Nisa gaddai to himself said

[55:02] the mind creates the abyss

[55:05] but the heart crosses it

[55:09] so we see in many of these non-dual

[55:12] Giants of the path of wisdom on Yani

[55:16] where the primary practice is

[55:18] self-inquiry that all these nyani

[55:21] Masters were simultaneously buckters as

[55:24] well

[55:24] were coming from Deep devotion in fact

[55:28] if you really look into the culture out

[55:31] of which many of these nyani Giants

[55:33] emerge you see that they emerge out of a

[55:36] very devotional culture if you've ever

[55:38] been to India it's everywhere

[55:40] right there's Alters everywhere

[55:43] on rickshaws and you see it in the eyes

[55:46] of everyone that look at you with so

[55:48] much heart it's so beautiful

[55:51] so devotional con devotional practice

[55:53] really is a Cornerstone in all the

[55:55] world's great traditions for wherever we

[55:58] are on the spiritual path for very good

[56:00] reason because it works

[56:02] because it keeps Us Alive it helps us as

[56:06] Christians did Christian Mystics would

[56:08] marinade in a holy name as a form of

[56:11] meditation that we know is centering

[56:13] prayer

[56:15] there's zika saying holy names of the

[56:19] Divine of Allah for Hindus it's called

[56:22] japa for Buddhists it's mantra

[56:26] so whenever we utter a holy name with

[56:29] devotion with sincerity wherever we are

[56:31] on the journey

[56:33] it has a powerful effect

[56:35] As A Course in Miracles says

[56:38] say God's name and you invite the angels

[56:41] to surround the ground on which you

[56:43] stand

[56:45] and sing to you as they spread their

[56:48] wings to keep you safe

[56:50] and shelter you from every worldly

[56:52] thought that would intrude upon your

[56:55] holiness

[56:57] so as my own Journey continues

[57:00] I keep learning more and experiencing

[57:03] more about the subtleties I discover

[57:06] in devotion and particularly with mantra

[57:09] I have been singing mantras for decades

[57:12] Sanskrit mantras in particular as well

[57:15] as chance in English as a way to feel

[57:19] and feed the devotional flame of my

[57:22] heart that I know is the PowerHouse of

[57:25] my path

[57:28] the pulsation of light the energy

[57:30] there's medicine in each Mantra in each

[57:33] prayer and it's so much more than the

[57:35] sum of its particular parts

[57:37] it offers us a way to concentrate and

[57:41] calm the Mind Mantra the word means

[57:44] mantra means a tool for the Mind quite

[57:47] literally

[57:49] so each Sanskrit Mantra not only helps

[57:52] calm and concentrate our worrying mind

[57:56] so that we can find peace

[57:58] it's a particular medicine these are

[58:01] syllables that have been

[58:03] precisely constructed that have a very

[58:06] particular effect on our subtle body

[58:09] tuning the spokes of our chakras in a

[58:12] particular way

[58:13] that brings about a change a

[58:16] transformation

[58:18] each Mantra is a particular signature

[58:22] but not only that just in the same way

[58:24] the river picks up speed and momentum

[58:28] through the force of gravity and

[58:30] especially when other little tributaries

[58:32] start to flow into that River

[58:34] it becomes this Unstoppable Force that's

[58:37] just going to end up in the vast ocean

[58:39] no matter what

[58:41] same thing when you turn into a mantra

[58:43] and you open yourself

[58:45] to it you're really opening not just to

[58:48] the medicine of the Mantra you're

[58:50] opening to the transmission

[58:52] all the love and the devotion and the

[58:54] spiritual power of all the people who've

[58:58] immersed themselves in that Mantra and

[59:00] come home in it

[59:02] and so it amplifies and exponentiates

[59:04] your own efforts

[59:06] literally Mantra is a living stream of

[59:10] Grace

[59:11] to help purify refine and expand your

[59:14] consciousness

[59:16] it'll soothe you it can heal you it can

[59:19] bring online essential qualities

[59:23] that are often latent and buried within

[59:25] us

[59:28] and it can help us in those moments when

[59:31] we most need to let go of everything

[59:34] and we will all be asked to let go of

[59:37] everything surrender my friends isn't

[59:40] optional

[59:42] recently a very dear friend of mine and

[59:45] someone who was one of the most

[59:47] dedicated students

[59:49] in our Sangha passed from this world

[59:53] he had a stroke he was 80.

[59:56] and in those five days between having a

[59:58] stroke and then going into surgery

[1:00:02] to see what this was really all about

[1:00:04] that he knew he might not come out of

[1:00:07] he was turning into the mantras that I

[1:00:10] had taught him

[1:00:11] although the stroke had rendered him

[1:00:14] unincapable barely capable of getting a

[1:00:17] single word out his didn't have the

[1:00:20] motor skills to speak in a normal way

[1:00:22] I have precious video clips of my dear

[1:00:25] one lying in his bed preparing himself

[1:00:28] spiritually

[1:00:30] singing the Gayatri Mantra which is a

[1:00:33] complex Sanskrit mantra

[1:00:35] and singing and enunciating every

[1:00:38] syllable perfectly and singing with his

[1:00:41] whole being praying with this whole

[1:00:43] being

[1:00:44] it was one of the most beautiful things

[1:00:46] I've ever seen

[1:00:48] to see how his devotion overrode

[1:00:52] stroke and supported him to just keep

[1:00:56] softening and opening and letting the

[1:00:59] mystery of the grace take us where it's

[1:01:02] going to next

[1:01:05] so I invite us to take a moment

[1:01:09] I want to share a moment of devotion

[1:01:12] through a mantra with you

[1:01:16] it's a prayer really that was given by

[1:01:20] great Sufi master hazrat in ayat Khan

[1:01:24] and it's a prayer that part is in

[1:01:27] English

[1:01:28] and it's a prayer that also includes a

[1:01:31] chorus of Arabic

[1:01:32] right

[1:01:34] that has its own sacredness as every

[1:01:38] sacred language

[1:01:39] that speaks certain prayer

[1:01:43] has its potency

[1:01:45] and he prayed let my heart reflect thy

[1:01:49] light Lord

[1:01:50] as the moon reflects the light of the

[1:01:53] Sun in love

[1:01:55] Always In Love

[1:01:58] so in the Sufi understanding

[1:02:01] a human soul whatever our gender whether

[1:02:04] we're male or female

[1:02:06] or gender-neutral how we identify a

[1:02:09] human soul is a she

[1:02:11] so the understanding is that our right

[1:02:14] relationship with the source of our

[1:02:16] being

[1:02:17] is to be receptive is to be in

[1:02:20] to the source the mystery

[1:02:23] whatever we call that however we

[1:02:25] understand that

[1:02:27] we can never fully understand it but we

[1:02:29] can open we can yield

[1:02:33] and so when we allow that yielding when

[1:02:36] we come with holy empty hands

[1:02:39] with that sincerity asking

[1:02:43] help us to open let us be the reflection

[1:02:49] of what we are let the light

[1:02:52] be lived here let the truth and the

[1:02:55] beauty

[1:02:56] come all the way through this vessel I

[1:03:00] call my heart and mind and soul and life

[1:03:04] then we are transported into

[1:03:08] this beauty that is who who hates you

[1:03:13] is hard to translate because like Alm is

[1:03:17] in Sanskrit it conveys something that is

[1:03:20] really Beyond conceptual understanding

[1:03:23] and his son Pi overlayat Khan was once

[1:03:26] asked if you had to really Define what

[1:03:30] is who

[1:03:34] his response was this

[1:03:37] Heavenly Beauty

[1:03:40] and so of course who Allah

[1:03:43] is the full yield into the Heavenly

[1:03:45] beauty of the Divine

[1:03:48] that our life be lived

[1:03:51] as an expression

[1:03:53] an embodiment of the Divine

[1:03:56] that brings truth and benefit deeper

[1:03:59] into this world

[1:04:03] so take a moment and close your eyes

[1:04:10] and let yourself breathe

[1:04:13] and feel

[1:04:15] and sense

[1:04:20] how you've been impacted by all that has

[1:04:23] been shared today

[1:04:35] let yourself feel your way

[1:04:38] into the deepest prayer of your heart

[1:04:44] as you let this chant carry your prayer

[1:04:48] further

[1:04:50] and amplify it

[1:11:19] so uh we have a few minutes now to

[1:11:22] receive any Reflections or any questions

[1:11:24] that you have for Miranda if you would

[1:11:26] like to ask her anything or share

[1:11:29] anything please pop it in the chat box

[1:11:31] for me privately and I will feed the

[1:11:34] questions or Reflections to Miranda

[1:11:35] please just try to keep them very short

[1:11:37] and to the point

[1:11:39] um that would help us

[1:12:01] um

[1:12:13] so a question from Doug can you

[1:12:16] recommend any English chance or mantras

[1:12:19] specifically asking for Grace Miranda

[1:12:23] sure the one that I was beginning to

[1:12:26] sing at the beginning

[1:12:29] which is

[1:12:31] [Music]

[1:12:31] um

[1:12:32] prayer of Yogananda is in English

[1:12:35] door of my heart open wide I keep for

[1:12:39] thee World Thou come wilt thou come in

[1:12:42] this moment come to me night and day

[1:12:45] night and day I look for the night and

[1:12:48] day

[1:12:49] so that's an example of a prayer in

[1:12:53] English that would work

[1:12:55] I also believe that you there's many

[1:12:59] ways that you can chant the Psalms on my

[1:13:02] first album The Heart of being

[1:13:04] there's a prayer in English be still and

[1:13:08] know that I am God

[1:13:10] so while that's not necessarily asking

[1:13:13] for the grace

[1:13:15] the chanting of it will bring you into

[1:13:18] the felt experience of the grace

[1:13:20] so I hope that gives you a place to

[1:13:22] start

[1:13:24] thanks Miranda and I will ensure that

[1:13:28] um the link for for both Mantra albums

[1:13:31] is available in the follow-up mailing

[1:13:32] tomorrow so if you want to have a look

[1:13:35] for them

[1:13:36] a question from Elizabeth I tend to over

[1:13:39] complicate things and what do you

[1:13:41] recommend as a simple devotional

[1:13:43] practice

[1:13:46] walking in nature

[1:13:48] just on the in-breath yes

[1:13:52] taking in the loving goodness that is

[1:13:55] nature that is life

[1:13:57] on the exhale thank you

[1:14:00] that works a treat

[1:14:02] and the great Christian Master Meister

[1:14:05] Eckhart said if the only prayer you ever

[1:14:07] said in your whole life is thank you

[1:14:10] that would suffice

[1:14:15] thank you

[1:14:17] they have a few more general questions

[1:14:19] about Grace and your own Awakening

[1:14:23] um

[1:14:24] one from Lane here this is all beautiful

[1:14:27] but how do you stop your thoughts and

[1:14:29] the constant forgetting during life's

[1:14:31] activities

[1:14:32] this is where Mantra helps a great deal

[1:14:35] so Mantra is powerful it changes your

[1:14:39] Consciousness it changes the channel and

[1:14:42] it gives you something to focus on so

[1:14:45] that you shift from giving automatic

[1:14:47] allegiance to the following of thoughts

[1:14:50] that are often nagging at you to giving

[1:14:53] your allegiance to the guiding reality

[1:14:56] of the heart so

[1:14:58] if you turn into any Mantra you can help

[1:15:01] change the channel very quickly very

[1:15:03] efficiently very powerfully

[1:15:06] so pick any Mantra that moves you that

[1:15:09] touches you that you like and work with

[1:15:11] it and work with it constantly come back

[1:15:14] to it

[1:15:18] thank you

[1:15:20] and from Leah or Lee and Leah probably

[1:15:24] how might one receive mentorship as they

[1:15:27] grow in their spiritual practice of

[1:15:28] devotion that's a great question

[1:15:32] well I mean that's there are many places

[1:15:35] you can go

[1:15:36] there are many teachers and teachings

[1:15:38] but obviously you know you want to be

[1:15:42] thorough in choosing who you want to be

[1:15:46] mentored by and taking your time to

[1:15:49] check out and trust yourself as to

[1:15:51] whether that person feels

[1:15:53] like they have what you need and that

[1:15:55] they're trustworthy right

[1:15:57] so I encourage you to ask what questions

[1:16:00] that you need to ask of any spiritual

[1:16:03] guide or Mentor or teacher that you

[1:16:05] might feel a desire to work with

[1:16:08] and

[1:16:10] um you know to remember that it's a

[1:16:11] relationship and most importantly to

[1:16:14] trust yourself if you feel something

[1:16:16] isn't right ask a question

[1:16:19] always are on the side of trusting

[1:16:21] yourself than trusting what someone else

[1:16:23] says because a real teacher a real

[1:16:26] Mentor will always invite you to listen

[1:16:29] to what's true in your own experience

[1:16:36] thank you

[1:16:39] and from Julie why do I fall asleep when

[1:16:42] I hear words of deep truth from teachers

[1:16:44] and Saints I stay connected but I'm in

[1:16:47] and out of listening I have a deep

[1:16:48] longing for God but I am overcome

[1:16:50] chanting does not have this effect on me

[1:16:53] uh-huh well then that tells you that

[1:16:56] chanting is a good a good thing for you

[1:16:59] a useful practice

[1:17:01] but sometimes when you're receiving a

[1:17:03] transmission we when a teacher is

[1:17:07] teaching from their own realization

[1:17:10] there's a transmission in energetic

[1:17:13] communication that's happening that is

[1:17:15] we're receiving we're being affected by

[1:17:18] and sometimes that's bringing up

[1:17:20] resistance so sometimes when we're

[1:17:22] getting sleepy or unconscious it's

[1:17:25] hitting on us in a way and it's causing

[1:17:27] resistance

[1:17:28] so don't judge yourself for that but do

[1:17:31] be curious oh what is what what is this

[1:17:35] how do I feel about this transmission

[1:17:37] that is coming forth and what is it

[1:17:40] pressing on in me and just bring your

[1:17:42] curiosity and your love to see more

[1:17:44] about that and know also that fogging

[1:17:48] over as it's classically called is a

[1:17:50] really common tendency it's the equally

[1:17:54] as common as monkey mind you know

[1:17:56] jumping around in your mind from thing

[1:17:57] to thing

[1:17:58] and it will pass especially as you bring

[1:18:02] your curiosity to understand it and one

[1:18:06] thing you can do in the moment when you

[1:18:08] notice it's happening is sense into your

[1:18:10] body a little bit more and take deeper

[1:18:12] breaths will help

[1:18:17] thank you

[1:18:19] and a question from Barbara which I know

[1:18:22] is answered in your book The Way of

[1:18:23] Grace but maybe you'd speak to it

[1:18:24] briefly here how do you define grace

[1:18:29] yeah well big question I have a lot to

[1:18:32] say about the matter Grace is direct

[1:18:34] experience of divine presence coming

[1:18:37] alive within you and so Grace has four

[1:18:41] primary ways that it manifests it's both

[1:18:43] the ground of our being it's both the

[1:18:46] love and the nourishment that sustains

[1:18:48] and soothes us and heals us it's the

[1:18:51] power that transforms us from one

[1:18:54] dimension of Consciousness to another

[1:18:56] and it's also a verb it's what we become

[1:18:59] we become more graceful as we surrender

[1:19:02] and deepen on the path

[1:19:04] so I encourage you to read the book and

[1:19:06] get into it because

[1:19:08] there's a lot of articulated about what

[1:19:11] Grace is and how we ride its currents in

[1:19:15] all four of those ways that I've just

[1:19:17] named

[1:19:18] and also

[1:19:19] um there's I put these teachings into a

[1:19:23] very user-friendly card deck so you can

[1:19:26] kind of take bite-sized ways and work

[1:19:29] with the practices in your life too to

[1:19:31] help let your experience of Grace come

[1:19:34] alive that's what's important

[1:19:39] and again I'll include links to to the

[1:19:42] grace deck and to the way of Grace in

[1:19:45] the follow-up email tomorrow but you'll

[1:19:47] find everything on the website as well

[1:19:50] and uh one from Anne when is the best

[1:19:54] time to chant mantras

[1:19:56] anytime

[1:19:58] anytime I don't think there's any

[1:20:01] optimal time really

[1:20:03] it's you know whenever it arises or

[1:20:06] whenever you need it

[1:20:08] and I would also encourage you to

[1:20:12] recognize that you know because chanting

[1:20:15] mantras usually feels really good right

[1:20:18] because it brings your devotion forward

[1:20:21] and what is your devotion but love

[1:20:23] really right so it brings the felt

[1:20:26] experience of love and spiritual power

[1:20:29] forward it's very inspirational it's

[1:20:32] very juicy it's very enlivening and it

[1:20:35] can Empower and and give more energy to

[1:20:39] any other practices you do for example

[1:20:42] I joke with my students If you

[1:20:44] experience resistance to getting to a

[1:20:47] daily meditation or yoga practice for

[1:20:49] example

[1:20:50] then you know consider what might seduce

[1:20:52] you into spiritual practice to make you

[1:20:55] want to come to the cushion I mean if

[1:20:58] you were to

[1:20:59] listen and chant to a mantra as you know

[1:21:03] you were getting ready to meditate

[1:21:04] that's likely gonna inspire you to want

[1:21:08] to come and sit rather than come from

[1:21:10] the Paradigm if I should do it

[1:21:13] and ultimately

[1:21:15] we we need our practice to be motivated

[1:21:18] by I want to because I love it rather

[1:21:21] than I should do it it's going to be a

[1:21:24] lot more potent as well as a lot more

[1:21:26] enjoyable

[1:21:27] and so of course you know Mantra is

[1:21:29] really helpful when you're in a knot of

[1:21:31] suffering you know some of my students

[1:21:34] have shared with me that they experience

[1:21:36] particular mantras it's like having a

[1:21:39] chimney sweep or other students have

[1:21:41] shared with me moments where they were

[1:21:43] just about to get into that same old

[1:21:45] argument with their spouse and they

[1:21:47] turned into their Mantra and it was gone

[1:21:49] the desire to go into that place with

[1:21:51] their spouse was gone

[1:21:53] so you know if you work with it it

[1:21:57] starts to work with you and the Shakti

[1:22:00] of your devotion and the Mantra merge

[1:22:03] and Mingle

[1:22:05] and it starts to take on its own life

[1:22:08] and that shows you you know how it wants

[1:22:11] to be lived and practiced

[1:22:13] so there's no wrong or right way there's

[1:22:16] just an invitation

[1:22:20] thank you

[1:22:21] and the final question and which leads

[1:22:24] us very nicely into the closing part of

[1:22:27] our session today from Suzanne do you

[1:22:30] have any classes that we can take with

[1:22:32] you yes invite you to talk a little bit

[1:22:36] tell us a little bit about the Mantra

[1:22:37] medicine course which is

[1:22:39] yeah well I'm so excited to be doing

[1:22:43] something that I want to be doing for a

[1:22:45] long time

[1:22:47] this fall I'm offering a three-part

[1:22:49] webinar on Mantra medicine as part of

[1:22:52] the album launch under the streaming

[1:22:54] platforms

[1:22:55] and really the bottom line is this

[1:22:57] wherever you find yourself on the

[1:23:00] spiritual path Mantra can take you

[1:23:02] further

[1:23:03] it can calm your wearing mind it can

[1:23:06] help change the channel from unwholesome

[1:23:09] Habits to loving awareness

[1:23:11] you can lift your spirits reconnecting

[1:23:14] you to boundless love peace Joy of your

[1:23:18] own spiritual heart

[1:23:20] it can Infuse all your existing

[1:23:22] practices maybe of yoga meditation or

[1:23:25] inquiry with a Grace beyond your

[1:23:27] conceptual efforts

[1:23:29] and ultimately Mantra offers immense

[1:23:32] spiritual and energetic support to carry

[1:23:35] you all the way to your true nature

[1:23:38] so in this three-part webinar I'm

[1:23:41] offering you a very inspirational and

[1:23:43] juicy dive together we're going to

[1:23:45] listen we're going to sing we're going

[1:23:47] to open to ancient sounds and syllables

[1:23:49] that have been hounded down through the

[1:23:51] wisdom Traditions to help purify expand

[1:23:54] and refine your inner life

[1:23:57] so in each of the session I'm going to

[1:24:00] be opening up two of the mantras within

[1:24:03] my streams of Grace album and will be

[1:24:06] Illuminating the mantra's real meaning

[1:24:08] also talking about the particular

[1:24:10] challenges that it can help you overcome

[1:24:13] the essential qualities that that Mantra

[1:24:16] helps to awaken and vivify in your

[1:24:18] experience

[1:24:20] and the subtle nuances of each Mantra

[1:24:23] that can include things like

[1:24:24] visualizations as well as how to

[1:24:27] integrate them into your daily life

[1:24:31] so if you're interested to find a deeper

[1:24:33] connection with the divine presence

[1:24:35] within or Beyond a faith tradition if

[1:24:38] you want to get more support in finding

[1:24:41] your way to pray or to rejuvenate an

[1:24:45] existing prayer life

[1:24:46] if you want to explore Mantra to cut

[1:24:49] through judgment and fear and negative

[1:24:52] habits of mind

[1:24:54] if you want to learn about Mantra to

[1:24:57] infuse your existing practices with

[1:25:00] greater power

[1:25:02] or access your D part with its innate

[1:25:05] love and joy and beauty and courage

[1:25:08] and most of all if you really want to

[1:25:10] marinate in the truth and the unity that

[1:25:13] is our depth with Mighty companions

[1:25:16] alongside you in community then I really

[1:25:19] hope you'll come join me

[1:25:21] so there's also some bonus materials

[1:25:23] that come with this like written

[1:25:25] handouts there's you also get the Mantra

[1:25:29] album both the special version with the

[1:25:32] spoken word inductions into the essence

[1:25:34] of each Mantra as well as just the music

[1:25:36] and just this week I recorded a special

[1:25:41] recording of the mahalakshmi extended

[1:25:44] practice which has the guided

[1:25:46] visualization the full practice that's

[1:25:48] about 25 minutes long it's really quite

[1:25:51] magnificent so you get that as a gift

[1:25:53] for coming along to this too as well as

[1:25:56] a private Facebook page where you can

[1:25:58] interact with other members of the

[1:26:00] community and ask me questions that I'll

[1:26:02] respond to

[1:26:04] so I have been wanting to offer this for

[1:26:06] years and I'm really excited to bring it

[1:26:08] to you it's an expression and embodiment

[1:26:10] of my devotion

[1:26:11] so I hope you'll come and join me

[1:26:14] for a juicy dive into Mantra medicine

[1:26:18] so

[1:26:23] there's

[1:26:25] just been a joy to share this with you

[1:26:27] and I'm really grateful that you came

[1:26:29] and I hope that you've received

[1:26:30] something from all that I've shared

[1:26:32] that's been meaningful that's been

[1:26:34] helpful to you and most of all I hope

[1:26:37] that this inspires you on your spiritual

[1:26:40] path

[1:26:41] so thank you and I just wish you every

[1:26:44] blessing on your continued Journey

[1:26:47] be well

In this 2023 talk, Macpherson defines devotion as a deep commitment and passionate dedication to someone or something we love, one that drives action beyond self-centeredness. She says it is never only a feeling; it moves us to serve what we hold dear, whether that is a family member, a calling, or the divine.
Macpherson describes surrender as letting go of our very perception of what we are, including the sense of separate somebodiness and the belief that 'I am the Doer.' She says the ego cannot do surrender itself, so it is better understood as an ongoing process of ego relaxation supported by Grace.
Close your eyes and call to mind someone you love, even imperfectly. Notice the willingness and force that love creates, then trace where the love is coming from, sensing whether it draws you toward something deeper and wider than the personal heart.
She says the heart includes courage and potency as well as kindness, and that devotion provides 'a strength, an ignition' for turning inward. In her view, the strength lies in continuing to open to what is true, which requires courage and asking for help.
Macpherson quotes the fourteenth-century Sufi master Hafez: no one can resist a Divine invitation, which narrows our choices to two. We can come to God dressed for dancing, or be carried on a stretcher to God.
The session's description links to Macpherson's Mantra Medicine course and her album Streams of Grace: Mantra Medicine for Yoga & Inner Peace. Near the close she turns to mantra as a way to pray and renew devotion in daily life.
