The Night Sanctuary (Pt. 6: Dreamless) by Nirodha: A Listening Guide

Dreamless arrived on 14 August 2026 as a single with one track. It is the sixth installment of The Night Sanctuary, which Nirodha, the project of Madrid-based composer and kirtan facilitator Daniel Espada, releases one piece at a time rather than as a finished album. Because this is a single, this guide treats the one piece as the whole record.

Where It Sits in Nirodha's Arc

Nirodha's work runs along two threads. One is wordless, for sleep and stillness, built on native flute and classical guitar. The other is voice and mantra, with chant, kirtan and voice over tanpura. The three albums so far are Chants from the Heart, Surya and the still-unfolding Night Sanctuary. Dreamless belongs to the first thread, the sleep-oriented one.

The slow, installment-by-installment release suits the project's temperament. Nothing is announced and dropped. Pieces simply appear, and the sixth part arrives as part of a continuing practice rather than a finale.

Sonic Character

The name Nirodha is Sanskrit for cessation, the stilling of mental noise, and the music is built around that idea. Espada chooses instruments for one quality: each can hold a single tone without demanding attention. In the Night Sanctuary series that centers on native flute, sustained and unornamented.

Expect subtraction rather than texture. Espada records alone, mostly at night, with whatever instrument gets out of the way fastest, and he asks what can be removed rather than added. Pacing is slow, with long tones and real silence between phrases. There is no beat, no lush reverb and no orchestration. The mood is closer to a quiet room than to a soundscape.

I have no verified details on this piece's exact instrumentation or length beyond its place in the flute-led Night Sanctuary series, so I won't pretend to map its internal moments. What can be said is what the series, and the title, promise: music meant to accompany the descent into sleep, not to hold your attention on the way down.

The One Track Worth Naming

With a single-track release, the signature piece is the release itself. Its title does much of the work. "Dreamless" suggests the aim is not a journey or a narrative but an absence of one. This fits Espada's guiding idea that stillness is something you remember rather than something you achieve. The piece is not trying to take you somewhere. It sits in the room until the thinking mind has less to hold onto.

What makes it land is restraint. Because the music asks so little, it works whether you are falling asleep or simply sitting. The Night Sanctuary pieces come with no philosophical prerequisites, which is why they are a sensible way into his catalog.

Place in Its Tradition

Nirodha's wider work sits within the Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, though Espada approaches it as a composer rather than a traditionalist scholar. Dreamless is not kirtan. There is no call-and-response, no harmonium-led chant and no devotional text. It belongs to Nirodha's instrumental side, closer to contemplative and ambient sleep music than to bhakti practice.

Still, the same ethic runs through both threads: sound as a means of quieting the mind through sustained tone and repetition rather than spectacle. He is not tied to a named lineage or teacher, and it would be inaccurate to assign him one. What connects this piece to kirtan is the discipline, not the form.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This is for the restless sleeper, someone whose mind keeps working after the lights go out and who finds busy sleep playlists more irritating than soothing. It also suits people who already keep a meditation or yoga practice and want something that won't compete with their attention.

It is not for everyone. Listeners who want rhythmic propulsion, emotional catharsis or a sense of forward motion may find it static. Those used to polished pop or electronic production may find the acoustic intimacy underproduced. And it is not designed as passive background listening, even though it can function that way for sleep.

How to Listen

Play it at night, as the last thing you do. Dim the lights, put the phone out of reach and let the piece run without a plan to "use" it. Headphones help if your room is noisy, since the music depends on quiet and on small details of tone, but a speaker at low volume works as well.

On a first listen, try staying awake with it. Notice how a single held tone changes your attention, how little you are being asked to follow, and how the silence between phrases feels. Then listen again as you go to sleep. Because the series is built to be returned to, you might pair it with earlier Night Sanctuary pieces and let the set become an evening ritual.

If Dreamless works for you, the natural next steps are the nylon-string guitar and tanpura warmth of Surya, or Chants from the Heart if you are curious about his voice. Both offer a different kind of stillness from the same patient musician.

AboutNirodha

Daniel Espada, as Nirodha, shapes native flute, classical guitar, harmonium and voice into quiet, single-tone music that helps restless minds settle into stillness.
