Where This Release Sits in Nirodha's Arc

The Night Sanctuary (Pt. 1: Threshold) is a single, one track released on 27 March 2026, and it is the opening gesture of a larger project. Nirodha is the meditative music project of Daniel Espada, a Madrid-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator. According to the artist's own sources, Night Sanctuary is an album in progress, released one piece at a time rather than dropped whole. "Pt. 1: Threshold" is the first step across that line.

That matters for how you hear it. Nirodha's catalogue runs along two threads: wordless music for sleep and stillness, and voice-and-mantra work. Night Sanctuary belongs to the first thread, the one built around native flute. Elsewhere in his work, Surya pairs nylon-string classical guitar with tanpura, and Chants from the Heart sets Sanskrit mantra to harmonium and voice. This release is the quietest doorway into the project, and a title like "Threshold" suggests exactly that: the moment before sleep, before stillness, before the day lets go.

Sonic Character

Nirodha's instruments are chosen because each can hold a single tone without demanding attention, and Espada records alone, mostly at night, with whatever instrument gets out of the way fastest. For the sleep-oriented Night Sanctuary material, the instrument at the center is native flute. Expect sustained notes rather than melodic development, silence treated as a compositional choice, and very little harmonic movement.

The pacing is the point. Espada works by asking what can be removed rather than what can be added, so the music is austere, closer to skeletal than lush. There is no heavy reverb, no orchestration and no sonic drama. The mood is less "soothing wash" than patient attention: a room in which a few tones are allowed to last.

Because this is a single, the listening experience is compact. You are not following an album's sequence of moods; you are entering one state and staying there.

What to Listen For

Since this release is one piece, the useful thing to name is the piece itself.

"The Night Sanctuary (Pt. 1: Threshold)." What makes it land is the idea built into its title. A threshold is a place you pass through, not a destination, and the music is shaped accordingly. Listen for how a held flute tone behaves over time: how it begins, how it sits, and how the silence around it starts to feel like part of the instrument. Espada describes stillness as something you remember rather than something you achieve, and this is a good piece to test that on. It does not ask you to reach anything. It leaves room for you to notice that quiet is already there.

I won't name further tracks, because none exist on this release. The single is the whole statement.

Its Place in the Tradition

Nirodha's wider work sits within the Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, though Espada approaches it as a composer rather than a traditional scholar. The name itself is Sanskrit, meaning cessation, the stilling of mental noise. The bio names no teacher or lineage, and his work is not tied to a guru-disciple structure.

Threshold is wordless, so it is not kirtan in the call-and-response sense. Its connection to that tradition is indirect: the same discipline of tone-holding and repetition that makes a drone useful in mantra practice shapes how the flute is used here. Think of it as sitting closer to ambient and sleep music than to devotional chant, but with an austerity that sets it apart from most of that field. Where much sleep music relies on textural layers, this leans on subtraction.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This is for the listener who finds most sleep music too busy, too glossy or too eager to be "transformational." If you are someone who lies awake with a restless mind and wants sound that gets out of the way, this fits. It also suits people with an existing meditation or yoga practice who value restraint and are comfortable with silence.

It is not for everyone. Nirodha's music is anti-stimulation by design. If you need rhythm, forward motion, emotional release or production polish, it will feel static. It is also not designed as passive background music; it rewards patient attention.

The life moment it suits best is the end of a day that has been too loud: a late evening, a transition period, a stretch when sleep is hard to come by.

How to Listen

Choose a night listening session and keep the conditions simple. Dim the lights, put the phone out of reach and play the piece once through without doing anything else. Headphones will bring out the room-like closeness of the flute and the spaces between tones, but speakers at low volume in a quiet room work too.

Try it two ways on different evenings. First, sit upright and listen with full attention, following a single tone as it fades. Then, on another night, lie down and let it accompany you toward sleep. The music is built for both, and the contrast between them is the best way to understand what Espada is doing.

Since Night Sanctuary is unfolding one piece at a time, return to this track as later parts arrive. It was named a threshold for a reason, and it will sound different once you know what lies beyond it.
