Om gam ganapataye namaha by Nirodha: A Listening Guide

Nirodha is the meditative music project of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid. Om gam ganapataye namaha is a single, released on 16 October 2023, and it contains one track. That makes it a different kind of object from the three albums that sit within his catalogue. It is a single mantra given room to unfold, with nothing around it to compete.

Where It Sits in Nirodha's Arc

Espada's work runs along two threads. One is wordless, built for sleep and stillness with native flute and classical guitar. The other is voice and mantra: chant, kirtan, and voice with tanpura. This single belongs to the second thread. It sits alongside Chants from the Heart, the album that sets Sanskrit mantra to voice, harmonium and silence, but it works at a smaller scale. Where an album lets you move between moods, a single asks you to stay with one phrase.

The name Nirodha comes from the Sanskrit word for cessation, the stilling of mental noise. A single repeated mantra is arguably the most direct expression of that idea in his catalogue.

Sonic Character

I can only speak to the palette Espada describes for his voice-led work: harmonium, tanpura and voice, instruments chosen because each can hold a single tone without demanding attention. Expect that logic here. The music is acoustic and unadorned, without orchestration or lush reverb. His singing across the mantra work is clear and unhurried rather than ornamental or ecstatic.

The pacing follows from this. Espada works by asking what can be removed rather than added, so you should expect space, sustained tones and silence treated as a compositional choice. The mood is inward and steady rather than celebratory. If you come to kirtan for percussion and communal heat, this is the quieter, more introspective end of the form.

The Track Worth Naming

There is only one, and it carries the title: "Om gam ganapataye namaha." What makes it land is repetition used as a tool rather than a display. The mantra is short, so the ear learns it within moments and stops tracking it as language. After that, attention can settle on the grain of the voice, the drone beneath it and the gaps between phrases. Espada describes stillness as something you remember rather than something you achieve, and a piece like this is built to support that: it doesn't push you toward a destination, it gives you a steady place to rest.

Place in the Tradition

This sits within the Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, the chanting of mantra, though Espada approaches it as a composer rather than a traditionalist scholar. He records alone and in intimate settings rather than within a structured guru-disciple lineage, and the music reflects that. It honors the form while staying independent of any single school. The mantra is presented less as spectacle than as a way of quieting the thinking mind through repetition and resonance.

Compared with call-and-response kirtan recorded in a group, this is a solo, contemplative reading of the form. It is closer to a private practice session than a gathering.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This single suits listeners who already value slowness: people with a meditation or yoga practice who want a mantra recording that doesn't crowd them, and newcomers to kirtan who would find a single short chant an easy way in. It also suits anyone going through a restless stretch, when a mind that won't settle benefits from something simple to hold onto.

It is less suited to anyone looking for rhythmic drive, emotional catharsis or energizing devotional intensity. Espada's music is fundamentally anti-stimulation, and it isn't designed as passive background listening. It rewards patient attention.

How to Listen

Listen alone, and ideally in the evening, when Espada himself does much of his recording. Use headphones or a quiet room so the drone and the silences between phrases stay audible. Sit rather than lie down if you want to engage with the mantra, and consider chanting quietly along, since repetition is the point.

Play it once through without doing anything else. Notice the moment when you stop hearing words and start hearing tone. That shift is what the piece is for. If you want more after that, Chants from the Heart is the natural next step, offering more mantra in the same unhurried voice.
