NeuroMeditation Institute is a meditation school and training organization based in Oregon. It teaches NeuroMeditation, a brain-based approach built on the understanding that each style of meditation has a different effect on the structure and function of the brain. That knowledge helps people choose the practices most likely to support their goals.
The Institute teaches five styles: Focus, Mindfulness, Open Heart, Quiet Mind and Deep States. Each is described by what it helps with, how it feels and how it works in the brain. Focus, for example, is linked to concentration and attention. Mindfulness is linked to stress and feeling overwhelmed. Open Heart is linked to empathy, relationships and mood. Quiet Mind is linked to negative self-talk and mental calm. Deep States is linked to creativity, self-exploration and releasing trauma. A styles inventory helps people find the one that fits them.
The Institute's mission is to help people reach the benefits of meditation in the most effective and efficient ways possible. It holds that anyone can develop or deepen a practice with the right information, tools and support. Its work includes classes, professional training and certification, EEG NeuroMeditation coaching, and technology-assisted practice. Its stated values include curiosity, kindness, individual differences, experimentation, humor, integrity and collaboration.
The roots of the approach go back to the 1960s, when neurofeedback pioneers began combining EEG biofeedback with meditation. In 2014, founder Dr. Jeff Tarrant identified four meditation styles that could be examined and trained with neurofeedback, and published the work in a book chapter. He opened the Institute in Eugene, Oregon in 2016. In 2017 he published the book Meditation Interventions to Rewire the Brain, and the Institute added a research program, weekly classes and a professional certification training. Dr. Tarrant is a licensed psychologist and board certified neurofeedback specialist.
Today the Institute has a team of providers across the United States and in 13 other countries. Its classes welcome all experience levels. They mix the science of how meditation affects the brain with seated and movement-based practices, technology-based approaches and lifestyle strategies. The Institute also shares educational videos and guided practices on its YouTube channel.
