La Senda by Curawaka: A Listening Guide

Some releases are best understood as a doorway rather than a destination. La Senda, released on March 21, 2023, is a single with one track, and it asks to be heard on those terms: not as a sweeping statement of an album cycle, but as a concentrated look at what Curawaka does when the frame is narrowed to a single piece of music. The title is Spanish for "the path," and the name suits a band whose work is about travel between worlds.

Where It Sits in Curawaka's Arc

Curawaka is an international group, formed by artists from Norway, Mexico and Argentina and founded by vocalist and songwriter Anna Bariyani. It describes its sound as "sacred world music," a way of joining the new with the ancient. By 2023 the band had a debut, Call of the Wild, behind it, and Dreamtime, also from 2023, was part of the same period. La Senda arrived in that window, which makes it a useful side door for listeners who want a single sustained encounter before committing to a ten-track album.

It also has a second life. The song was later reworked in a Namirí remix, which means the original is the version to know first: the band in its own voice, before producers pulled it toward other rooms.

The Sonic Character

The band's defining texture is a powerful, projected lead voice set against Andean and ceremonial instrumentation. Expect charango, quena and sikuri flutes alongside guitars, bass and a range of percussion, with ceremonial rhythm supplying the pulse. I can't tell you from the available information exactly which instruments appear on this particular track or how the arrangement unfolds, so treat the following as the band's general signature rather than a track-by-track map.

The voice is the center of gravity. Anna Bariyani sings in seven languages, among them Hatcha Kuin, Yawanawa, Sami, Spanish, Portuguese, English and Norwegian, and the force of her delivery is full rather than hushed. The Andean winds and strings are not decorative color here; they carry melodic and rhythmic weight. Textures lean on melodic line and rhythm more than on dense harmony, and the mood tends toward the ceremonial: grounded, attentive, and unhurried in its demands on the listener.

The Track Worth Naming

There is only one: "La Senda." What makes a single-track release land is that nothing competes with it. There is no sequencing, no interlude, no gentle ramp into the material. The song has to establish its own world, and it does so with the band's usual ingredients: a lead voice that commands the foreground, traditional instruments that hold their own, and a rhythmic undercurrent that gives the piece its ritual footing.

Listen for how the voice and the percussion negotiate space, and for where the flutes and charango step forward. Those are the places where the band's cross-cultural intent is easiest to hear. If the song draws you in, the Namirí remix offers a useful comparison, showing how the same material behaves when pulled toward club-adjacent listening.

Its Place in the Tradition

Curawaka does not belong to a single spiritual lineage, and it is more accurate to describe the work as a cross-cultural practice built on study, collaboration and respect for indigenous traditions. The most clearly documented thread is the band's many years of study with the Wixarika people, whose ceremonial world informs how the group approaches sacred music. The repertoire and workshops also engage with shamanism, ceremonies and shamanic drumming, which puts the band closer to medicine music and sacred chant than to conventional concert folk.

That places La Senda in a different lane from kirtan or ambient music. It is not call-and-response devotional singing, and it is not designed to disappear into the background. It sits nearer the territory of ceremonial song, with a lead voice that asks for attention.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This single is for listeners who already feel drawn to ritual sound, sacred chant or world music with real instrumental character, and who want a short, focused introduction to Curawaka. It suits someone at a threshold: starting a practice, closing a chapter, or simply looking for music that treats listening as an act rather than a backdrop.

It is less suited to anyone wanting high-BPM dance music or quiet ambient wallpaper. Listeners who prefer English-only lyrics may also find the multilingual approach demanding, since translations are not part of the available information. And those uneasy with sacred or ceremonial vocabulary will likely feel distanced, because the spiritual framing is central rather than ornamental.

How to Listen

Give it a clear stretch of time and no distractions. Headphones will help the separation between voice, winds and percussion, and an evening setting suits the music's ceremonial pull. Listen once straight through without doing anything else, then again with attention on a single thread: the voice first, then the rhythm, then the winds and strings.

Because the band's vocal intensity is projected rather than whispered, set the volume where the voice feels present rather than overwhelming. If you plan to use the track in a practice or ritual, audition it beforehand. And once it has settled, follow it with the Namirí remix, then step back to Call of the Wild and Dreamtime to hear the path it belongs to.
