Anthony De Mello

Meditation Teacher · Bombay, India

Anthony de Mello was a Jesuit priest, spiritual teacher, and psychotherapist who built one of the most enduring bodies of work in twentieth-century contemplative practice. Born in Bombay in 1931, he spent four decades integrating Christian mysticism with Zen Buddhism, Hindu Vedanta, and Sufi storytelling into a radical method of self-observation aimed at waking people from what he called "the sleep of illusion." His work reaches far beyond Catholic circles; contemporary teachers including Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti, and Thomas Moore have cited him as a formative influence.

De Mello's approach is distinctive for its directness and its refusal to comfort. Where many spiritual writers offer reassurance, he insisted that most human suffering stems from attachment to mental constructs—about God, the self, success, love—and that freedom requires dismantling those constructs through relentless self-awareness. He drew heavily on the parables and koans of Eastern wisdom traditions, retelling stories from the Desert Fathers, Nasrudin tales, and Zen masters in a voice that was colloquial, funny, and unapologetically challenging. His method was not devotional but diagnostic: he taught participants at his retreats to observe their reactions, emotions, and beliefs without identification, a practice rooted in Vipassana and Ignatian discernment alike.

His most widely read books include Sadhana: A Way to God, a 1978 collection of Christian prayer exercises influenced by yoga and Zen; Awareness: The Perils and Opportunities of Reality, a posthumous 1990 compilation of retreat talks that became an international bestseller; and The Song of the Bird, a 1982 anthology of teaching stories. Also significant are One Minute Wisdom and The Way to Love, both of which distill his core teaching: that love and happiness are not achievements but the natural result of seeing clearly. His recorded lectures and retreat talks circulated widely on cassette tape in the 1980s and continue to be shared in digital formats today.

De Mello entered the Society of Jesus in 1947 and was ordained in 1961. He earned a master's degree in spirituality from Fordham University and trained in psychotherapy at the Institute of Pastoral Counseling in Chicago. In 1972 he founded Sadhana, a pastoral counseling center in Lonavla, India, where he led retreats for clergy, laypeople, and seekers from around the world until his sudden death in 1987. His retreats were rigorous, often lasting a week or more, and combined silence, guided meditation, group dialogue, and storytelling. Participants recall sessions that were at turns hilarious, uncomfortable, and revelatory.

His books and tapes have sold more than two million copies and have been translated into dozens of languages. The Catholic Church issued a notification in 1998 cautioning that certain of his later works contained ideas "incompatible with the Catholic faith," particularly his treatment of divine revelation and Christ's uniqueness, yet his writings remain in print through Image Books, Doubleday, and independent publishers. His work is taught in retreat centers across traditions, recommended by therapists and mindfulness instructors, and quoted widely in self-help and contemplative literature. He is a fixture in reading lists for those interested in Christian mysticism, non-dual awareness, and the intersection of psychology and spirituality.

De Mello died of a heart attack in New York City in 1987 while leading a retreat. His work has experienced renewed attention in recent years as audiences search for spiritual teaching that is psychologically sophisticated and free of sectarian boundaries. The Sadhana Institute in Lonavla continues to operate, and recordings of his talks remain widely available through YouTube, Audible, and the Center for Spiritual Exchange.

For someone encountering de Mello today, his work offers a path to freedom through awareness—not through belief, ritual, or effort, but through the willingness to see oneself and the world without the filter of fear and desire.
