Alison Réaume is a yoga teacher, teacher trainer and somatic educator based in the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver, where she teaches in Maple Ridge. She has spent more than 17 years teaching yoga and training teachers. Her work rests on the belief that yoga should make room for the person practicing it, and that the pose is only part of the practice.
Her own approach changed over time. She describes a long period of pushing, working hard, travelling constantly and expecting her body to keep up. At 28 she had surgery to remove a large tumour from her abdomen, which became life-threatening, and recovery gave her a deep respect for the body's vulnerability and resilience. Changing her relationship with her body took years longer. Her questions about yoga gradually moved from what she could make a body do to what we can learn by paying attention to it.
Today she offers somatic, nervous-system-aware yoga classes and private yoga therapy, along with workshops, retreats, 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, and continuing education for yoga teachers, including online learning. Her work brings together movement, somatic awareness, philosophy, breath and self-study. She cares about curiosity, choice and discovering what works for the person practicing, and with teachers she focuses on seeing and supporting the people in front of them.
Alison is a Certified Yoga Therapist, E-RYT 500, Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher and Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider. She runs her own registered school, Vidya Yoga Academy. She has taught since 2012 and has mentored and trained more than 200 yoga teachers internationally. Her Insight Timer page also mentions Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and accessible, trauma-aware practices. She has written about building a sustainable wellness career, including in a feature for Authority Magazine.
