Heather Schenck is a mindfulness meditation teacher and the founder of A Heart Awakened, LLC, based in Fort Collins, Colorado. She describes her path into teaching as beginning with her own need for healing: her practice evolved, and she felt a strong desire to bring these teachings to others in a way that is accessible to anyone.
She received her Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification through UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. She holds bachelor's degrees in Nursing from Georgetown University and in Psychology from Colorado State University. Her teaching draws on the practices and teachings of Buddhism from a secular perspective, and her style is compassionate and accepting, shaped by her experiences as a nurse and a mother.
Heather also works as a registered nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit. Years ago she was accepted to graduate school for a Nurse Practitioner degree and declined, because she felt strongly called to bring these healing teachings to the world. Her offerings include live and online classes and meditations, including a class for healthcare professionals, parents and other caregivers, and mindfulness courses and workshops for organizations. Students describe her classes as warm, welcoming and nourishing.
She is the author of Unbecoming Ourselves, an honest account of her struggle with self-image and depression, made harder by her work as a nurse and mother during the COVID-19 pandemic, and of finding liberation from attachment to labels through secular Buddhist teachings.
Away from meditation and the hospital, she enjoys writing, yoga, rock climbing and hiking. She lives with her partner, two young children and a rescue dog named Charlie.
Worth Knowing
Heather Schenck is a mindfulness meditation teacher based in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the founder of A Heart Awakened, LLC. She is also a registered nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit, and that background shapes most of what distinguishes her teaching. Her path into teaching began with her own need for healing, and as her practice deepened she wanted to offer these teachings in a form anyone could use. Students tend to seek her out for secular Buddhist mindfulness that is grounded in clinical work rather than abstract spiritual language. Her offerings include live and online classes, guided meditations, and mindfulness workshops for organizations, and her writing is candid about her own struggles with self-image and depression. Her work is best suited to people who want practical, humane meditation without a religious framework, though it is less of a fit for seekers looking for ritual, devotional practice, or a single defined lineage.
