Kundalini Yoga Breath Flow for Stress: A 41-Minute Practice

Picture a living room in the spring of 2020, mats unrolled between the couch and the window, a teacher on a screen asking you to bring your palms together in front of your heart. That is the setting for this practice, a 41-minute Kundalini session led by Noa Lakshmi and published on the SoTeria Foundation channel on April 10, 2020. It is a flow built to do one specific job: move stagnant, stressed energy through the body with warm-up movement and breath, then settle the mind with an 11-minute meditation she calls a Kriya. The structure is simple to follow and easy to underestimate, and it rewards close attention to what each stage is doing.

Why does a Kundalini practice start with the hands and the spine?

The opening is not decoration. Lakshmi begins with a mantra, "I bow to the teacher that resides within me, out to the divine intelligence that lives in me and all around me," then rubs the palms together until heat builds between them. Pressing the palms at the sternum and focusing on the third eye center turns the hands from a greeting into a point of concentration. (Around the 199-second mark, in the transcript, she moves into this palm-rubbing and centering.)

From there the body warms in a deliberate order. Neck rolls come first, head moving side to side and then in full circles, with a throat-opening lean back on the inhale and a chin-to-chest drop on the exhale. Then come hip circles, forward and back, with the knees as anchors. The sequence matters because Kundalini work asks the spine to do most of the talking. By the time she moves into spinal flexes, arching on the inhale and rounding on the exhale with the head kept level, the tailbone-to-neck column is already loose and awake.

Look closely at one detail she repeats: the cue to pull the navel in and engage mula bandha, the root lock at the perineum and lower abdomen. She asks you to draw the energy up the spine as you inhale and hold it, then release. Mula bandha is not something to grip for effect. It is a steady, lifting contraction that supports the breath work that follows, and she returns to it so often that it becomes the thread holding the whole flow together.

How does four-count breathing change the nervous system?

The first real breath section is deceptively plain. Eyes closed, hands resting on the knees, you inhale through the nose for a count of four and exhale for four, then move into a set of rounds where the exhale stretches out and you hold at the bottom. Lakshmi calls it "very simple to begin with," and that is the point. A slow, even count gives the mind a rhythm to lean on, which is exactly what someone reaching for calm needs when stress has been running hot.

The rounds then shift. She introduces a longer breath held at the top of the inhale, with the energy lifted and the root lock engaged, and a full exhale followed by a hold at the bottom. Breath holds like these are a classic Kundalini tool. They ask the practitioner to notice the pause between breaths, where the urge to grab for air is itself information about how activated the system has become.

What do Lion's breath and breath of fire actually do?

Lion's breath arrives partway through the session. You stick the tongue out, open the mouth wide, and exhale with force, making a sound. It is loud, a little ridiculous, and very effective at releasing tension in the face, jaw, and throat, the places most people hold stress without noticing. She follows it with stillness, and the contrast is the lesson: you discharge hard, then you let the body settle.

Breath of fire is the most demanding part. It is a rapid, rhythmic pumping through the nose with the navel drawing in sharply on each exhale. Lakshmi asks for it in a crisp, quick rhythm, with the hands in a specific posture: fingers curled, thumbs pointing toward each other, arms raised as though a funnel sits on top of the head. The breath is short and fast, the pulse rises, and the energy is directed upward. Done with attention, it leaves you warm and alert. Done carelessly, it can overwhelm, so the advice to keep the navel gently engaged and the movement precise is worth taking seriously. After the fire breath she slows everything down: a deep inhale, a soft exhale through the mouth, eyes opening, and a return to the mat.

Lakshmi frames the whole flow as a route out of emotional charge. In the video, she explains that the neutrality of the mind "is helpful to bring about peace, to bring about calmness into the system," and that staying in it matters especially at a time when so much is going on.

How does the cat-cow and downward dog bridge into stillness?

Before the Kriya, she returns to the floor. Hands and knees, shoulders over the wrists, hips over the knees, big toes touching. Cat-cow comes first: arch on the inhale, round on the exhale, with the pace quickening toward the end of the set. Then comes a held inhale with the chest lifted and the chin up, a breath hold, and a slow, fully emptied exhale that rounds the spine all the way in. The posture change feels like a reset on its own. The body has been moving, the breath has been pushed and held, and the floor work gently returns it to a grounded base.

From there the flow moves into downward facing dog, with feet hip-width apart and hands shoulder-width, tailbone lifting toward the sky. She then works through a sequence of heel-to-heel movement and a transition into upward facing dog, flowing between the two shapes on the breath. This is the vinyasa thread she mentions at the start: a short, linked movement that keeps the breath and the body in conversation before the practice turns inward.

What is the 11-minute neutral mind Kriya for?

The emotional payoff of the session is the Kriya. Lakshmi sets up a timer for 11 minutes and asks you to settle into a seated position with the eyes closed or lightly focused, the gaze drawn toward the third eye and the tip of the nose. The aim, as she describes it at the start, is to activate what she calls the neutral mind, the place where you are not pulled into the positive or the negative. Her specific examples are fear and despair, the kind of intense mental spaces that can feel stuck.

She is also explicit about how she wants the practice used. Her invitation is to do this Kriya for 40 days straight, and she frames the lockdown moment as an opportunity: "there's nothing else to do right if you are at home." Whatever you think of the framing, the logic is consistent. A short daily meditation is easier to repeat than a long one, and repetition is how the neutral state becomes a place you can return to rather than a rare visit.

How should a beginner approach this video?

Do not try to match everything at once. The flow is long, and some breath work is intense. Start with the warm-up and the four-count breathing, which are gentle and build a foundation. Add Lion's breath when you feel ready to release, and treat breath of fire as a skill to approach slowly, watching for dizziness or strain. Keep the navel engaged and the shoulders loose. The Kriya at the end is the core of the practice, so give it the most consistent attention. If you can only do one piece daily, make it the 11 minutes.

The deeper lesson in this video is about structure. Warm the body, work the breath, release what is stuck, then sit still. That arc is older than any single teacher and it is what makes the practice work. Lakshmi's version is clear, a little breathless in places, and honest about its purpose: to help you come back to calm.

Where to go from here

Try the practice in the order it is taught, and keep a simple log for a week: note how you feel before and after the 11-minute Kriya. If you want more structure, look for longer Kundalini sequences that build on the same principles of breath, spinal movement, and the neutral mind. And if you are new to breath work entirely, start with four-count breathing alone for several days before adding the fire. The video is the map; your own body is the territory, and it will tell you where to slow down.

In this video, Noa Lakshmi describes the neutral mind as a state that is not pulled into positive or negative emotion. She says it helps bring peace and calmness into the system, and that her 11-minute Kriya is designed to activate it and help release intense fear, despair, or other strong emotional charge.
The video runs about 41 minutes. It moves from an opening mantra and palm-rubbing into neck rolls, hip circles, spinal flexes, four-count breathing, Lion's breath, breath of fire, cat-cow, downward dog, and finishes with an 11-minute seated Kriya.
Breath of fire is the most demanding breath in this flow, a rapid pumping through the nose with the navel drawn in on each exhale. Lakshmi keeps the instructions precise and the navel gently engaged, but beginners should approach it slowly and stop if they feel dizzy or strained. Starting with the four-count breathing and warm-up is a gentler way in.
Mula bandha is the root lock at the perineum and lower abdomen. In this video, Lakshmi asks you to engage it on the inhale to draw energy up the spine, and she returns to it repeatedly so it supports the breath work throughout the session.
Yes, the 11-minute Kriya is short enough for daily repetition. Lakshmi invites viewers to practice it for 40 days straight, framing consistency as the way the neutral mind becomes a reliable state rather than a rare experience.
Lion's breath is an exhale with the tongue stuck out, the mouth open, and a forceful sound. In the video it is used to release tension in the face, jaw, and throat, and it is followed by a still moment so the body can settle.
