Eliud Kipchoge: The GreatestMarathoner of All Time

No Human Is Limited

In the history of marathon running, no name commands more respect than Eliud Kipchoge. With a world record of 2:01:09, two Olympic gold medals, and the only sub-2-hour marathon in human history, the Kenyan runner has transcended sport to become a global symbol of human potential.

Early Life and Rise

Born on November 5, 1984, in Kaptabi, Nandi County, Kenya, Kipchoge grew up on a small farm. He was discovered by coach Patrick Sang while still a teenager, and quickly showed exceptional talent on the track. At just 18, he won the 5000m at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, beating Hicham El Guerrouj and Kenenisa Bekele — two of the greatest middle-distance runners ever.

After a distinguished track career including a 2008 Olympic silver medal in the 5000m, Kipchoge made the pivotal decision to shift to the marathon in 2013. His marathon debut in Hamburg (2:05:30) signaled what was to come.

Marathon Dominance

What followed was the most dominant stretch in marathon history. Between 2013 and 2022, Kipchoge won 15 of his 17 marathons, including:

  • Berlin 2015: 2:04:00 — announcing his arrival as the world's best
  • London 2016: 2:03:05 — winning by over 2 minutes
  • Berlin 2018: 2:01:39 — shattering the world record by 78 seconds
  • Tokyo 2020 Olympics (2021): 2:08:38 — Olympic gold in Sapporo's heat
  • Berlin 2022: 2:01:09 — lowering his own world record

His only marathon "losses" were a second-place finish in Berlin 2013 (his debut) and an eighth-place finish in Boston 2023 — his first time running the course.

Breaking 2: The INEOS 1:59 Challenge

On October 12, 2019, in Vienna's Prater Park, Kipchoge did what many believed impossible: he ran a marathon in under two hours. Surrounded by 41 rotating pacemakers in a carefully orchestrated formation, with a pace car projecting a laser beam on the road, Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 1:59:40.

The time doesn't count as an official world record due to the controlled conditions and rotating pacers. But that misses the point. Kipchoge proved that the 2-hour barrier — long considered a physiological wall — could be broken. "No human is limited" became his defining phrase.

The Philosophy

What makes Kipchoge remarkable extends beyond his physical gifts. He lives at a training camp in Kaptagat, Kenya, where he shares a room, does his own chores (including cleaning toilets), and runs with his training partners daily. He reads voraciously — philosophy, biographies, self-help — and fills notebooks with reflections.

His famous quotes reveal a mindset as disciplined as his training:

  • "Only the disciplined ones in life are free. If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods."
  • "I don't know where the limits are, but I would like to go there."
  • "The best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago. The second-best time is now."

Legacy

Kipchoge's influence on running is immeasurable. He popularized the Nike Vaporfly shoes that revolutionized marathon footwear. He inspired a generation of Kenyan and global runners. And he proved that with discipline, preparation, and belief, humans can achieve what was previously deemed impossible.
